The Mauritanian.

True story of a detainee at Guantanamo Bay who was interrogated and tortured for 14 years without ever being charged with a crime

I got angry at the injustice watching this film. The ending was a bit more uplifting however.

Good film.

The story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.

Really enjoyed this film-a real gem!

If you've got Netflix, then I'd recommend this one which I saw earlier in the week

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Really impressed with it.... a true story ( although how close the film sticks to the facts I'm not sure )

Nonetheless a really good portrayal of anti-establishment protesters fighting the system (probably why it appealed to me)

Good film. US treatment of black people was always an Achilles  Heel in the Cold War propaganda game.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Watched this on the weekend. Won't be for everyone but I was fully engaged with it, the wife less so. I'm a big fan of Riz Ahmed, think he's a great actor.

Totally agree with this. Ahmed is a great actor and it seems the film world is catching on at long last.

Muscle Shoals

Good documentary for music lovers - I watched it on Amazon Prime (but I think it may be coming off there shortly)

Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America's most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the 'Singing River' as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals changed the world and sold millions upon millions of copies. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white together in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations while giving birth to the 'Muscle Shoals Sound' and 'The Swampers'. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, Gregg Allman, Clarence Carter, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Bono, and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism, mystery, and why it remains influential today.

The Swampers are the session musicians mentioned in the lyrics of Sweet Home Alabama:
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
Lord they give me oh so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
Now how about you?

The Courier (2020)
8.5/10

In the shadow of the Cold War a letter from Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) an agency of the Soviet Union received by M16 stating the concern of Penkovsky about world safety and his anxiety about a nuclear war, So Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan) a CIA Agent reached out to MI6 Agent Dickie Franks (Angus Wright) , who recruited British salesman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) to be their spy.

A gem of a movie this one with a typically committed turn from Benedict Cumberbatch and also from Merab Ninidze too.
Surprised this didn’t get more coverage and fanfare-
A ‘proper’ film in my book!
