A tournament for the underdogs.

Looks like the rest of the world have quickly caught up to the tournament favourites.

I won’t pretend to have watched the tournament with the same interest I would have for the men’s alternative, but from the odd game I have seen the standard looks to be immeasurably better than it was even 5 or 6 years ago.

As you suggest, the gap between the top nations and the so-called lesser ones has closed. Nigeria are 40+ in the world and look technically decent, very well organised and incredibly athletic. It’s not a terrible watch by any means.

One thing you can say is that we've got a few of our best players missing due to injury. Possibly the same for some of the other contenders, but Nigeria certainly look to be a pretty decent team. I expect a lot of their players will play in the professional leagues in Europe, so not a surprise that they are at a high standard as well.

Got to be England going out on penalties hasn't it?

It's what we do.

Women’s ‘keepers get their fair share of stick, some of it understandably so, but Mary Earps in the England goal is a very capable shot stopper for someone 5ft 8” in stature.

Calling it now; we’ll win this.

Our keeper might as well go for a cup of tea.
