Please put your name here if you will ride to Lincoln for the away fixture on August the 30th and/or you will sponsor us to do it.

Its more than a few years since I got on a bike and I smoke too much so I'll not volunteer to ride a bike. But as it was my small joke which sparked this madness I will donate a small chunk of my childrens inheritance to the cause should you pull it off.

I dont think its a case of if, there seems to be enough interest so were going to try and sort the small details so it can go ahead.
Obviously anyone who has ever helped organise something like this please try and help out as ive never done anything like this and cant speak for leon but dont think he has either.
so Volunteers for the ride, donations and also someone with a brain would be very helpful lol

I have tried to organize a sponsored leg waxing at NAFC, but it never took off. Maybe lukeo will ride with us, unless he's playing for the internet mariners.

try getting in touch with cleethorpes rugby club. think its them thats doing a sponsored bike ride? sure it was in the paper last night. they might be able to give you abit more info on how to set it up and if there are any insurance requirments etc

I'm far to top heavy to be riding a bike that far. I'll be in the car all the way there and all the way back I prefer my method of transport to have 3 pedals rather than 2, and a roof

Sod it, I'm up for it, as long as I can find a way of getting my bike back to cleethorpes due to no trains (I'd go home via sheffield not with the hoardes of town fans who would travel on the train home)

As I stated before, I live in Lincoln so I'd be cheating if I did it, but I'll chuck in a silver farthing to sponsor you. What's the Charidee? I suggest getting in touch with both clubs to get some exposure too. You'll probably get invited onto the pitch before the game (and get in for nowt!)
I did a sponsored walk from Louth to BP for a friendly game against Barnsley years ago and got onto the pitch and a hearty round of applause! I was offerd a seat in the Main stand but wandered round to the Pontoon. Ungrateful barsteward that I am!

It is a long way to cycle without training.
I'm far too unfit and old to complentate participation however I'd be pleased to sponsor the guys (& gals?) for a very worthy cause

Sounds like  a great idea, well done!  Hope you dont mind, but I have posted your thread and the one from your OS on our busiest board which currently is      http://www.lincoln.vitalfootball.co.uk/

If you go to club forum I have pasted it in there, it may help raise some sponsorship, or give ideas/help etc

£5 penalty for the side which finishes the lowest out of Lincoln or Grimsby in the BSP this season
£5 penalty paid by the other for the side that has the highest league scorer out of Lincoln and Grimsby
£5 penalty for which side gets the most points over the other covering both league games.

Bet between Impish and Mariner91, loser has to pay cheque to kids wards at Diana POW or Lincoln County Hospital.

Seems we have a fair bit of support. I have email town already asking for some support from them and Jon is speaking to Lincoln today. The biggest stumbling block is whether the Police will let us do it on a big police game like this one, but I'm pretty hopeful that we won't be told we can't do it. I'll start training today.

Yeah I see what you mean, but we'd aim to get into Lincoln two hours before kick off. The most we'd need would be one copper on a pushbike or even motorbike just to follow us in. That's just a drop in the ocean compared to the police we've seen at SB or BP over the last few years.

got to hand it to you guys - i used to do a lot of mountain biking on my kona but riding potentially 6-7 hours in the saddle there are back (76.3 miles) was normally classed as a days ride for me and that when i was doing that kind of thing every week! your unlikely to average much over 12mph.

i'll certainly donate!!

Yeah, we'd be setting off early and taking a steady speed. Hopefully take 4 to 5 hours each way (if we were to do it each way) and make a shed load of cash for a good cause.

Well if you are offering to help one way then that is welcomed. We would also need backroom staff such as safety car drivers, first aiders and water boys so any help is welcome.

I think this will take you guys over 6 hours each way. I've done this trip before and it is a real killer; there are some big hills in the first 2 hours and if you're not in any sort of shape you'll have a struggle.

I think you're better off hiring a transit as a support vehicle. You can keep bottled water in it for the way there and you can chuck your bikes in the back for the trip home. You'll also need a contingency in case someone has a mechanical failure at Holton-le-Moor or somewhere else remote like that.

Good luck fellas.

and i think some one should contact every pub we pass on the way just in case they decide to donate a pint  to each rider.......or is that just my dread of biking past an open pub

I definitely agree with that idea. Bacon and Egg sandwiches all round as well. The ideal contingency plan would be a few spare bikes in the back of a van I suppose this might mean a bike lend appeal to anyone who could lend. How much would a tranny van cost to rent?

I agree with Maccabilk, it will take some doing for you guys to complete this,Lincolnshire luckily has few hills (you should try walking back from Chesterfield town centre to where I lived after a night out, now that makes the hill at Lincoln look flat!

If you are going to do it you will need to get stregnth in your calf muscles as they will go tight very quickly.

Remember the average person can do around 10mph, after many miles this speed will slow down!

if you can do it then fair play but for many of you it will cause much pain

i am definatley thinking about it ......and if it is a yes .....i will have to get into training .....but besides turn up with my bike i will be unable to offer little more in support.......should some one either approach cancer reaserch for sponser form or knock out some offical looking sponserforms on their comp

has anyone had any replies from Footie clubs ...police .....and we need at least 5 to 6 weeks to organise and get sponsership  so should we set a date for a cut off  for when we decide if we do it or not ....in my opinion we want at least 6 to do it other wise it becomes tthe  domain of the keep fit freaks who could do it in their sleep

Having just spoken to LCFC they are more than happy to back it as much as possible. ie via there website match day programs and also will allow charity buckets inside the ground. Waiting for the police liason officer to get back to me, but spoke to a copper at work today and he said they wouldnt block it and would more than likely provide a bike escort.

St Johns ambulance are also prepared to offer a volunteer to drive along to provide all first aid which is fantastic.

Going to get on the phone to telewag and echo to see if they are willing to back it.

I think from this board we have 5 or 6 people willing to do it. Just emailed Dave Smith with the details. I shall knock up some provisional sponsor forms now.

Not been on here for a day or so so only just caught up with the thread. I would deffinately give it a go, if enough interest is raised and enough people to go I am up for it. Will do anything for a good cause, and to watch the mariners aswell cant go wrong.

I suggest that you get you bike lubed up on Saturday morning and have a trial ride to Market Rasen; that's the half-way point.

That will give you a good indication if it is physically possible for you before taking things too far. The last thing you want is an egg-on-face moment on the day and end up missing the match.

Riding round Grimsby at a steady speed won't prove anything. You need to see if you can deal with some of those mighty hills on the A46 (Caistor, Swallow, Cabourne etc). That's a true benchmark as to whether you can make it all the way to Lincoln...and back.

Yeah but you don't jump straight into a sprint, you have to jog a bit first. A few weeks of riding round town and then a few trial runs up to MR.

It is one way only. GY to Lincoln.
At the moment gtfc, lcfc the telewag, the echo, viking fm, and lincs fm have all said they will help promote the event.

People are worried about fitness so trying to lobby the higher institue into offering some fitness classes, going well at the moment, got a provisional yes but they will get back to me once all details have been sorted.

I think the bike you will be riding will have the biggest effect, a standard mountain bike we all have wont be very good for the job, I am not saying go buy tour de france style bikes but you will need a bike capable of going 40 miles lol sounds simple but alot of bikes wont be able to get there without any problem whatsoever, I am no expert but other places are? Velo sport in Clee High St might be able to give us some tips or even sort us out with some safety gear, who knows maybe some free. They seem to specialise in more long distance riding, I am basing this on the bikes in the window, never been in to be honest. just an idea.

If it is to be done every detail needs to be perfect, as you know it wont be easy but count me in

Thanks Wembley08, much appreciated! We're looking at doing donations through the Cancer Research UK website, if we do it for them.

Maybe you guys should actually be doing it to raise funds for the Grimsby Town Supporters Trust?

The fact that this thread has got far more coverage than the one about the Trust on a GTFC Message Board is another thing...

I see what you mean, if i were to ride round Grimsby for 2 hours at a steady speed, maybe up to Ravendale and places like that that would be ample training.

If you want some good hills to train on, can I recommend one near Ashby cum Fenby - go through and out of the main village, ignoring all the side lanes until you reach a T-junction.  Turn right here.  You will come to a hill near Thoroughfare Farm that is pretty testing - it will take you onto the Barton Street.  Turn left at the top of the hill, then you will eventually come to a crossroads.  Turning left will take you to Grainsby and right to Wold Newton.  The Wold Newton hill is ace ... a right killer.

(And all this without reference to a sat nav!)

excellent post.
We need suggestions on things needed so me or leon can ring relevant companys to ask for some kind of donations in exchange for free publicity.

This has the potential of being national news so companys will want to get involved, so please put what we need and suggestions of places that could/would donate.

Jon is 20 (?) and I am 18. I am not what you would call fit, but one of the rules of the ride would be to not leave anyone behind. In other words the slowest leads the pack.

You need to look into obtaining Public Liability Insurance. If someone has an incident during the ride (heart attack, falls off, hits someone else etc) then you, as organiser may well be liable if it is found that you did not take adequate measures beforehand to mitigate all health and safety risks to a level that is considered reasonable.

Yes, it's bollox, but it is worth covering your behind beforehand rather than trying to do the same whilst on remand...

Also, do we have to go via the A46? I've spotted a way via Scartho to Market Rasen where we meet the A46 there, but what are the hills like going out that way via Binbrook and Tealby, anyone know?

I have already invested in various GTST schemes, surely people can decide who they donate money too without being made to feel bad about it.

Also i feel Cancer Reseach UK is more worthy of my cash than GTST

I dont want to raise money for the club, hate to sound like a screwge, but I think we all give them enough of our hard earned.
Also, mention to a company were doing it for grimsby town fc they are hardly going to bite your hands off are they, Cancer research is more than a worthy cause, I'm with you on this LH, everyone can relate to it.
And best wishes to your mother

Things needed, feel free to add to.
Bikes fairly obviously
Safety gear, Inc. helmets, hi vis vests..
A tranny van and mini bus

you need some high vis jackets/ vests and helmets

i would also suggest a good pair of cycling shorts - covering 40 miles in footy shorts on a rubbish saddle is going to cause some considerable pain.
i wear a hydration pack when i go riding mines a camelback but there are cheaper versions out there.

your bike is going to have to well maintained. i would also suggest not using mountain bike tyres with a deep tread - the rolling resistance these cause is like adding miles onto your journey especially on tarmac. if your not wanting to payout on semi slicks fits some old worn out treads (ask at a bike shop for some for free) just make sure the side walls are strong. deraileurs will need a tweak up and possibly new cables as there will be a lot of gear changes in the 40miles.

god help you if you are on steel frames

puncture repair kits and pumps
chain tool (only any good if you have a chain that can be split ie not cheap ones)
multi tools are helpful with 4,5,6,8mm allen keys, pliers for cables and flat screwdriver for tweaking deraileurs
good saddle (i use a grooved one for long rides to stop my balls going numb - not nice)

from asda for a few quid you can buy this in a set for like £8 -

i would wear gloves
make sure you set up the bike to keep your back straight and that your saddle is at a height so that your legs are at 95% stretch.

i'd wear my SPD pedals for optimum power output from the legs. my riding shoes have a stiff sole for power transfer, wear light well ventilated trainers.
if it is raining for the entire journey you are going to want to have shoes that are not going to weigh as much as your bike!

it is easily doable if you take your time, i've taken my dad who is unfit on a trip round the ladybower which was nearly 40 miles on rough paths and it took 7 hours with plenty of stops.

stay hydrated and i suggest glucose drinks - you'll sweat and need to keep your nutrients up.

for the tees - get the iron on transfer packs from tesco and make up what you need unless you can get it done cheaply or buy some fishy tshirts and modify the back for the bike ride.

goto B&Q, focus and get some free 3 gallon buckets for collections.

i might be up for it but i'm waiting currently need a new rear hub and wheel rebuild (not cheap) i would be up for the photography/ check pointing with the car with first aid kit/ water/ TOOLS! i ahve all the tools of the trade and a tool box full of spares etc.

hire a white van for £60 (discount for the cause) then just the diesel from GY to lincoln and back again. the only problem with this is whether you will make more than the £60.

on a positive i have done this before for lincs cricket/ scouts before and we have made 100's for the cause. your cause is much bigger and related to more people so more people are likely to give to the cause. it wold be cool if a percentage could go towards the club though or summats.

hope that helps

hydration pack is what i use (its like a small rucksack with a resevoir and tube running from it for drink) if you ain't got one fill a water bottle

my suggestions will just make things easier - they are not essential by any means!!

although i stick by the paded cycle shorts and good saddle - i'm yet to sow my seeds yet to create mini citymariners and i want my swimmers to be at least with their 25cm proficency badge

It's a good idea the Lincoln directors and fans walked over hot coals to raise money for a cancer charity and with Jacko fighting cancer it would be a good choice.
LCFC are keen on the charity side of things.

I am sure plenty of imps fans would support this.

It seems like one hell of a task, but one famous saying is, "put your heart and mind to it, and anything is possible" Everyone is doing this for a certain reason.
Ill struggle to do it, but im confident of completiting it, im very unfit and will be giving up drink and cigs for this, drink from now till sept
Im not gonna over do the training, just a couple of miles of walking each day to gear up then do couple of miles riding, including going up hill lincoln. :S

Definitely in. I probably won't train as much as I should but I will start biking to work and footy training in the next few weeks. Can't say I'd go as far as giving up drinking til September though! Maybe we should ask Lincoln to put us a 3 course meal on for when we get there and a few pints.

I have a serious underlying cardiac health problem which puts participation out of the question. I would love to help though so if anyone can think of a job for me I'd be delighted. Perhaps helping in the support vehicle.

Four friends of mine are biking from the Eiffel Tower to the Dock tower in a week later this month. I could ask them for tips and also whether they have any of their equipment/drinks etc. left.

Anxious to help....

The people who post on here are amazing...A throw away comment a couple of days ago and it's grown to this. Fantastic....

If it is organised properly, I would be prepared to help, contact media organisations etc to get this the coverage it deserves.

But AND I STRESS BUT: it has to be organised in a proper manner, get GTFC  and LCFC involved...maybe a few players to promote it from each team, official forms will have to be made, look into insurance for an event and contact local charities to raise money for, businesses to sponsor and donate gear etc.

There is a lot to do, but least the match is over two months away!

Maybe get both captians and both youngsters (Bennett & Hone) who were nominated for league two player of the year to help back it, by doing that would add a lot of credibility! I'm sure Jackson would want to show his support as would players and fans who have had relatives suffer with cancer.

What would the campaign be called...Bike for life? or something like that. Lets get serious ideas rolling as it needs to be started now!

I will contact Humbeside and Lincolnshire police by email, then maybe organise a meeting, look how much is needed to be raised rtc.

I may be up for it, i'm going to see if i can bike up some of the hills on the wolds this weekends, if it goes well then i'm in. Oh and it would be useful to loan a bike if that company's up for it.

Agree Ian. The benefits are enormous if it's done properly but it is a hell of a long way. Our CAR doesn't like Cabourne hill much!! We need to have the route carefully planned. I wouldn't discount the route out the back through Binbrook because I think there are marginally less severe hills. It should also be safer as in less traffic. One of the issues for the A46 I'd guess will be the need for marshalls etc. to keep cars advised of the event. I'd guess the riders will be well spread out. Probably need refreshment stations along route and first aid unless you have the first aid in the van. Surely some firm will lend us a transit for the day?  The firm in Grimsby near the station (Ready Rent a Car?) have a branch in Lincoln as well.

Barralad the best sponsored bike rides go at the pace of the slowest and stick together.... less dangerous , easier to police/escort and control...
Sod the traffic on the A46... they are used to being stuck behind tractors and caravans so a few cyclists won't hurt anything.... probably overtake
a tractor anyway.... c'mon Bosty... bring yours along as escort ?

I bow to your superior knowledge (meant genuinely). Perhaps the Police will have (any) guidelines necessary. Where is Bosty by the way??

If I was fit enough and had a decent bike I'd be up for this. It's a big ask for those who are not fit enough. I must've done the route hundreds of times in my car and yes, some of the hills are bad. Good luck to those taking part. The acid test will be riding past The Salutation Inn without going in for a pint. Maybe that's just me!

Right, I think all who want to take part should PM me and say whether they want to ride or they want to help organize. I think a special role should be given to lincolnsmariner as he has done a lot of ringing round today to get things kicked off. I would also like to say that if you physically, mentally, medically whateverly can to get your bottom on your bike and get pedaling with us because the more people we have involved the more money we can make. The route may be 8/10 but it'd so worth it if we made £8/10,000 from it.

Being a film and tv student I have some vital contacts that could and would make this a success, notably a sky sports news reporter. We have also told the local papers (GET and Echo), local radio (lincs fm, viking) and I will see if I can get some contacts from Look North and calendar.

One job someone can do is ring round some bike shops in the local area to see if anyone can lend anything such as bikes and helmets. Then we need to see if Banaman will help us print some shirts with sponsors on them.

Big thank you to everyone who has said they will help so far, hopefully we will do it and raise loads of cash for this great cause.

I have a transit van that I'd be happy to lend anyone. Trouble is it''s for sale and not insured at the mo. It's taxed & tested, just sat at the side of the road in Lincoln with a For Sale sign on it! It's a bit of a heap in that it's N reg'd and 190000 miles on it, but she's a diesel and would pull your house up Caistor hill, if only at 10 mph! Is there a dispensation for insuring a vehicel on a day to day basis? I'm not sure.

i am old but up for it ...was thinkin is it possible...plausable for maybe a couple of the oldies like mysef who doubt their own fitness to say share a bike and do 10 mile sections....obviously he younger lot who do it all would et more plaudits but if i could do 10 then rest for 10  do another 10  it would make it more achievable...and maybe 1 spare bike so we all ride into lincold at end

only a thought

You can insure your van for the day (or I think the minimum is for a week).

You'll only want 3rd Party insurance so I'll cost you around 20 quid I expect.

In that case, I'd be happy to help with the van.(Providing I still have it in August, which thinking about it, I may not ) I'll look into the insurance thing. (I'd appreciate a bit of contribution to the diesel though as it's not the most economical thing I've ever owned!)
Would people to want me to just transport the bikes back to GY or be a support vehicle too? I think a "normal" car would be better as a support vehicle with a bike rack for spare bike/bikes. Incidentally I have a bike rack too which I'm happy to let someone use.

Just a thought, there will a shed load of traffic on the A46 that day,
Apparently there is a football match on and loads of Town fans will be going by bus and car, as there are no trains..............
you could cause jams all the way back to Morrisons

I'd think that the majority of Town fans that go from GY will be leaving 1-2 hours before Kick off. We're likely to be nearly there by then!

Ok guys,
Spoken to DI Andy Pearsons which is lincolns liason police officer for the club, he has informed me the police are more than happy for us to do it.
Ive got to email him with further details and he will try and provide some support for us (i.e escort/sponsership)
Nice fella untill he said we better be setting off now if we are to get here for the 30th

This was the one thing that was going to stop the whole thing so there isn't any going back now! I was thinking an easy way to do the route would be to have a car with a spare bike on top follow us and then every 10 or so miles have a checkpoint where somebody could have drinks ready and help us shake the cramp out and stuff. I was also thinking, its quite flat from caenby corner isn't it? Is there a way of getting to there through the binbrook way to Caenby corner?

we need to find out which is the best route so i can give details on to the police, as they are looking to provide an escort for us, Local media also would like to know as they are going to be running the story, radio will also be giving out traffic warnings on the day which is fantastic.

So which would be best route.

If you sort out a rough route that you think would be best, just as a trial I will drive it tomorrow, come back and give my verdict on it. Taking into account fatigue, safety, checkpoints, will set the milecounter thing in my car see the actual distance etc etc.
I have tomorrow off work (I have been working saturdays in preseason) so I would like to fill my day time somehow.

Great help thank you. I think there is a route on page 5 ish that I would like to adapt to go in through a main road, just so people see it happening. Most would be town fans heading in so we could get some honks of support!

Just been suggested a route, Blundell Park to Great Coates through to Aylesby. Aylesby to Caistor by the back road and then thorugh to Caenby Corner that way. Anyone recommend this?

It's fooking hilly through Caistor way, having done it many, many times over the past 8 years! Can I suggest looking at http://www.multimap.com as they do an option for "Walking" and it's 36.73 miles from BP to SB... There's probably scope to "adjust" this route but I can't do it from work!
THe route I always use now, albeit to the North part of Lincoln is to Louth and through Wragby. Again, hellish hills that way, both up and downhill though. Couple of nice pubs on the way though....!

I think we should get Lincoln to get us some meals ready for when we get there, accompanied by beer. Lots of beer. Anybody who can recommend a route please do. We need to give the routes to our media sources and stuff.

I went the A157 way to lincoln this morning, there are a few bad hills but is mainly downhill from Hainton (9 miles from Louth). There is 1 very bad hill at Grimblethorpe (what a name) though.

Now based in reading, do I class as an exile yet?

I am only doing it on autoroute but I put we will be biking 10mph on all roads but streets, which I put as 6, and it says the route is 40.8 miles, and should take 4 hours 32 minutes with them figures I put in. I suspect a 15 minute stop every hour? So add another hour, which makes 5 and a half hours! which is still very optimistic   thats if everything runs smootly of course.

The main route taken to lincoln via the a46 is 39 miles, if we go via caistor its 45, and bigger badder hills too.

Im gonna sort the idea for food and drink this end, either through LCFC or ill get use of our restuarant at work if we have time.
Im sorting out the donations of drink and energy bars from local supermarkets, asda are willing to do a raffle for us and donate a prize so theres so money that will go towards the cause.
If we get enough people i can organise the friday for us to go into morrisons helping packing bags that will raise alot of money.

The company i was told about bike hire is no longer doing hiring so im gonna lobby some companys that might help, i was told about one near somerfield in town (gy) if anyone knows what its called or a number so i can call them?

Is that that elsfal? I'll be on the checkout at morrions on the friday night anyway. I'll just have a word and get the buckets on all the checkouts.

http://www.multimap.com/direct.....ap=53.38791,-0.26809|11|4

Just found this route. I reckon we'll have to look at setting off at 5am to give us a chance of getting there for 11ish.

Hells bells. I reckon you lot are gonna pull this off! I'm thinking about taking part myself. I don't have a bike though. Maybe, I can borrow one from my chum, Trevadinhio. Seems a bit ambitious for a fat, ageing Vicar like me. I'm off on my hols the day after so I would have 2 weeks to recover in the Carribean. I think I'd need it! I'll give it some thought.

Go on, you know you want to. Just think of it as a free way of getting to the match. We'll making an absolute trawler load of money. I'll be honest, I don't even have a bike. It got robbed. I'll be looking on the board at work tonight.

Here's your route if you go via the A46. This website also gives you the elevation, so you can see how bad the hills are. The site takes a minute to load as there's a lot of Javascript to initialise, but stick with it. To show the elevation, click the 'settings' box and then turn on 'show elevation' in the left hand menu that appears.

http://www.mapmyride.com/route/gb/cleethorpes/517637783

This will give you the chance to play around with it and work out the best route. Setting this up took around 5 minutes, it's not complicated.

I do need someone to do one thing. The tesco is willing to provide this but they need a letter it is in grimsby, so if anyone wants to volunteer in writting a letter and taking it in would be fantastic.

Right, I will attempt to pull together a website for this event this weekend. Already spoken to LH and Lincolnsmariner about this. I was going to see how things went before revealing it but fck it, i'll commit to doing my part in this way. I am anything but a professional website builder so it's going to be relatively basic but hopefully acceptable. i have a decent plan of what i'll include. This thread is getting a little long to be the sole information centre so hopefully this will help out.

Given this ambitious (from my point of view) idea, have we decided on a name for the event? I've heard 'Ride for Life' suggested and not heard a better one.

Will hopefully have something in time for very early next week.

My offer of my crappy van has been overtaken by events (thankfully!) but I'm happy to throw my hat into the ring to help out in any way I can. Lincolnsmariner, drop me a pm if you need me to do anything Lincoln end. Again, brilliant work  Oh and LOVING the "BIKE TO THE BANK" name for the event! Another Poll I feel?

Maybe you 3 could split it 3 ways then. If we could do 4 you could do a stage each. Anyone who wants to be involved will be involved. Big thanks again to everyone.

Can we get a poll asap on the name of this monster of a project.

'Bike to the Bank' is good but does it lack a bit of a link to charity? It seems people already like it though so perhaps it's fine.

'Ride for Life' is similar to the annual 'Race for Life' charity event which may be a good or bad thing.

Im not really an ideas man so i wont attempt to come up with my own suggestions!

Well as we have decided on 50% CRUK 25% to each hospice it'll have to be bike to the bank. Ride for Life is a bit of a downer for a hospice isn't it? Although having said that it would be quite positive.

Bike to the Bank, Ride for Cancer. Blundell Park, Cleethorpes - Sincil Bank, Lincoln 30/8/08

or my suggestion was
"the fishy expadition (spelling?)
charity bike ride bp-the bank"
or something like that

Im hoping to get some fishy t-shirts as the main sponsor as seen as the idea came from this site.

regarding helmets, doubt i'll wear one but maybe if we got them in a colour which we could write on the players could sign them and we could sell em off to help towards the cause.

What about if we did 20+ miles each. We are both not in great shape, but gives us a reason to start training, and will show fattys can do their bit to mate...only a suggestion. I need a bike too arrrggghhh better find a job me thinks..does anyone have one of them going?

Blakey, I've decided to do it but it's gonna be the full and daunting tab if I do.

It looks like I've managed to borrow a bike for a few weeks so I intend to start training 3 times a week. I'm unfit as you know (we play in the same footy team) but I've lost a bit of bulk recently and I reckon this would help me lose a bit more weight too (can't hurt unless I keel over!) Would be good if we could train together? Will discuss tonight at Winterton m8.

Need to ask Lincoln if we could have a pint waiting for us. I'm sure people would agree with me, that is exactly what we'd want at the other end. Oh and maybe if they could put their reserve team out. I'll ask at Mozzers tonight if we could have buckets on the tills.

This is the multimap route by selecting "walking" but is all roads so probably the SHORTEST route. As for hills.... hmmmm... Suppose one of the riders could scope it out beforehand!

Can't make any firm promises at present, will have to check with my doctor, having had 4 minor strokes in a week some years ago.  Nevertheless, I would love to take part in my own small way. I think that you are all to be commended for putting in the effort to raise cash for such an admirable cause. We all know someone who has sadly died suffering from cancer of some sort or another.

As I will be the tender age of 62 when the bike ride takes place, I better get checked out first.

As I live in Scotland, I will probably need a couple of hours start on you guys/gals. But seriously, what I would like to do is cycle from up here to Sincil Bank, and raise as much money as I can on the way through. If I am allowed to make the cycle ride from here, I,ll have words with the local press, and ask them to spread the word to all the local newspapers on my route, in order to raise as much money as possible on the way down. I will also talk to the local police and ask for them to appraise the local forces on my route to be aware of what is happening.

Question for lincolnsmariner. What time do you think you will all arrive? Would like to be there to meet you.

Maybe you guys should actually be doing it to raise funds for the Grimsby Town Supporters Trust?

The fact that this thread has got far more coverage than the one about the Trust on a GTFC Message Board is another thing...

No, it's a very worthy cause.  I'll happily sponsor someone and, if you need any assistance from GTST in some way, please let us know.

Good luck!!

Will any Lincoln fans be joining us make it a true charity event of good sportsmanship

You would like to think so, wouldn't you? The rivalry with Lincoln has always been a generally friendly one.

Maybe the Imps fans would consider a similar event for the return fixture - with the proceeds split in the same way, of course.

You would like to think so, wouldn't you? The rivalry with Lincoln has always been a generally friendly one.

Maybe the Imps fans would consider a similar event for the return fixture - with the proceeds split in the same way, of course.

Im lobbying lincoln fans to join us at the half way stage, this to bring both fans together and to get more coverage regarding the event.

No idea, gonna ring the clubs on monday to confirm time. If it is 3pm this is one reason the police could knock it back still.
Hopefully now its progressed so far and have numerous companies involved they wont.

The A15 (the road from Caenby Corner to Lincoln) is flat, straight but also one of the most dangerous roads in Britain. The amount of HGV traffic on there is unbelievable. I'd seriously look at the route Brigsley/Ashby Cum Fenby/ Ravendale/Binbrook/Tealby/Market Rasen and then joining the A46. . The climbs are fairly gradual (apart from the one leading up to bully head crossroads) and you go DOWN the two biggest hills (into Binbrook and into Kirmond le Mire) Part of the route is a National Cycle Route so is considered very safe.

I have contacts with the local St Andrews Hospice so could contact them if needed. I've already had over £200.00 pledged from people I know/work with/family in memory of my wife even though I can't do the ride.

I have an inferiority complex-It's not a very good one though.

Being a film and tv student I have some vital contacts that could and would make this a success, notably a sky sports news reporter.

Hmmmm. Maybe your mate at Sky could have a word with the Soccer a.m. production team? Imagine the publicity if you could get one of the crew to get on their bike.

Oh, and bags I ride behind Hells Bells!

The least I can do. I'm gutted I can't do the ride but when I asked my G.P. it was 10 minutes before he could stop laughing. When he did it was to ask what hymns I wanted at my funeral service! Every penny that is collected towards dealing with the abomination that is cancer in all it's forms is money well spent! Hopefully buckets won't be big enough. You young lads are a credit to your generation and GTFC.

i was intending wearing a fishy t-shirt with the rides intentions printed underneath or similar cos i could then wear one of my berghaus tops underneath to soak that sweat away!

Don't necessarily have to be skin tight do they? Unless we do just have white tees with the main sponsors on the back and shirt sponsors on the sleeves.

cycle shirts are the skin tight ones.

into the pot for the fund... could do well , the design is very good....

was just thinking the same, either way, what ever we are wearing must be able to get sponsor printing on the back, this is one clause been added by most companys ive spoken to so far.

That's a good idea actually. We'd have to do pre orders though I should think so we don't over order. We'd like a welcoming party so if we were to do shirts, anyone with one would HAVE to be there.

right photoshopping my anniversary away but....

along the lines of:

?? - sponsor could be added to the rear when finalised witht eh charities moved to the front - these can be created into 2 images that brings down the price of printing - unless we can get a sponsir in which case they use the arms as a place to advertise

them training tops aren't so easy to print onto - although they would be perfect material for the ride!!

just been on the hospices sites and they are advertising 6k runs 10k bike rides ours is about 60k!!

City, they are good. Maybe we could make the logos smaller and in a horizontal line underneath the main headline. Then move it down a bit for our main unofficial sponsor. then donate sleeves and stuff to  smaller sponsors. Maybe approach Banaman for free printing for some shirt space.

if we were to individulise for the riders i suggest we buy some t-shirt transfers from tesco and do those bits ourselves - they iron on quite simply i did a citymariner bit for the back of my fishy t-shirt for when i wear it.

An idea my dad suggested was to get Youngs and whoever sponsors Lincoln to see if they'd do it. Also can any riders please PM me with a full name and a comment on why they are doing the ride for the website please.

To let you into a little secret , my folks used to baby sit Marinerian... when he got older ( about 7 or 8 )
he used to come and admire my car ( just up the road from where he lives ) as it was decorated with
union jack flags, scarves , stickers and stuff.... bless him....  but promise you wont tell anyone... ok ?

Gary is right, Ron and Brenda used to look after me if mum and dad went out. I used to lve Gary's car draped in Town flags etc. as he will tell you at 8 I was very passionate about Town and this was despite only living in Immingham for 5 years and my dad not liking football.

I used/still do wear my Town shirts around Chesterfield and other places, all ways been proud to be Town

This is a superb initiative - congratulations to all. Wonderful positive publicity for the Club, and for a very worthy cause.

I'll do it provided I can sort out my bike or hire one.

Thinking ahead to the game (so I'm assuming we make it!), I wonder what the ticket sale arrangements will be at Lincoln - I'd be gutted to bike all the way there knowing I'd failed to get a ticket (or 5 - including the 'support crew') because of some tricky ticket sale conditions.

I wonder if there's any arrangement we can get with either Club so we can make sure we can buy tickets?

just got back from work, had to read 5 pages to catch up! progress is being made. I even turned down a pizza on the way home.

I was thinking the same as DavidB, I cant see it being too hard to get tickets anyway, but just to be sure, am not keen on biking there and then not getting in!

Oh aswell good news about elsphal and the borrowing of the bikes, how many do they have? did they say? by the sounds of things, only citymariner has a bike capable of the journey.

Hey guys, fantastic idea, thought this was a joke when I read it the other day but fair play. I'm hoping to do my bit and join in the ride, could do with shedding a few pounds and got plenty of family who have been affected by Cancer so would love to help out!

It's brilliant the way this has taken off - I'm surprised how quickly things are being organised.  Well done for going ahead with it and not allowing any obstacles to get in the way.  Also impressed that the Vicar resisted the offer to just do half the distance and is hell bent on doing the full thing!

I can't commit myself to anything big like this, but I'll certainly make a donation to your cause.  Good luck!

i think we now have 15 or 16 riders, leon can list all whos doing it has hes taking care of that side of things, ive organised everything with companies and the charities as well as clubs and media, to date, with help from others along the way.

Dont worry about will he wont he, i think most people are having the same feelings, but because everything has progressed so quickly we know its serious so they are willing to do it.

Anyone who takes part whether it being behind the scenes or actually riding a bike is doing such an amazing thing for the club and the chosen charities and i dont think anyone could say otherwise.

It is the fear of failure I am dreading, 60 KM is a bloody long way, but there again if we start early and allow 8 hours we will all get there in the end

I realise it isn't a race and it is about earning as much money as possible

Yeah, I suppose about half way we'll all want a sit down so we will need to set off horribly early. I don't think many expect all of us to do the whole track so having some sub riders for some of the stages will be good so would anybody else want to join in?

it is quite easily dooable over the time frame of 6-8 hours

over 6 hours:

60/6 = 10km = 6.21 miles

so a steady pace of 6mph will do it - i have done oreinteering on foot pushing the 5/6mph barrier.

when you break it down like that it looks more managable.

i'm off to gym later to test my theory on a hard gradient if i can average 6mph on a more extreme circuit it will show how this run will do.

what is the exact route as i can take my GPS tracker and get an exact altiutde profile graph to show the fluctuations in height and gradient.

The bikes will be going in a transit van, which im hoping lincoln fire brigade will allow us to park in there training yard at sincil bank.
the mini bus is for taking people back.
Obviously for us josh we got to then ride home from sincil bank, easy for me though not so much you still have to ride up hill

Do you have a driver for the mini bus?

If not I'll do it. There is now way I could think about cycling more than a few hundred yards
