Butty’s source clearly seems to be Old Shut Up. Maybe he (Marley) is not wrong but simply out of touch (imagine!) ie not in the loop. Yes, got the letter but not been kept up to speed on progress by the Boss, who maybe realised what a liability he has turned out to be to him.

I can imagine the scenario. JSF picks up phone to Ian Fleming.

‘Ian, I have a mission for you while I’m away in the Maldives. Get on your cellphone and give the heads up to the EFL (he’s up with biz lingo you know). Tell them we want them to run a flit and proper person’s check on Tom Shutes for the takeover.’
‘OK John. Do you want me to let anyone else know while I’m at it. I’ve got that young Liam from the Evening Telegraph with me.’
‘Don’t worry I’ll tell the others myself after I get back. Oh, if them buggers from Humberside call about it put them on to Stephen.’

You have my word that Marley is not my source, though I've been hoping exactly what you've said applies to my source too. He's not one of the Fenty brigade so him being kept in the dark for fear of him questioning the authority of the 'supreme leader jsf' is quite possible! Fingers crossed, hopefully we will hear something one way or the other in the next few days.
