They’ll have had that straight from the club as well. It’ll be nailed on if the club have slipped it to the tel.

For those that dont like the telegraph website.

GrimsbyLive understands there has been a huge development with regards to a proposed takeover at Grimsby Town FC.

One interested party, thought to be an individual with close links to the area, is reported to have passed the owners’ and directors’ test.

In essence, that is a Football Association and Football League (EFL) process that determines whether an individual, or company, has the capacity or necessary funds to own and operate a football club.

Largest shareholder John Fenty, who stood as chairman between 2004 and 2010, has held the top position at Blundell Park for the past 15 years.

Speculation linking potential investors with the club has gathered pace in recent weeks.

And now, GrimsbyLive understands that the process is substantially further along that it has been at any point during the current board’s tenure.

Follow our LIVE updates below as we bring you the latest news from Blundell Park.

Is there a chance that we’ll remain in debt after this?  Could the new owner(s) simply give Fenty what he wants in the form of THEIR own benign loan? Genuine question. I’d imagine that a daft fan (most of us) would take glee in telling the fan base that the club is debt free, but would a canny business man really do that?

We have never been in this situation before so I really don’t know how it will pan out.

Who's the interested individual with close links to the area then? Mike Parker?

Excellent. It must be happening as we signed 2 strikes who we wouldn't normally be able to pay salaries for. It shows contingencies are already in place for transfer and salarie fees.

"We understand that the interested party - a London-based business person with strong links to the area - has passed the owners’ and directors’ test that is necessary for an individual, or company, to assume control of a football club."

From the Telegraph live feed. So it is not just joining the board if that is true. This has to be too good to be true surely.

True I guess we have to wait and see. But lets face it its not like we have a long term strategy in place at the moment (admittedly somewhat difficult in  some respects in the current climate).

When I clicked on the GT link a few minutes ago I got a ‘can’t find that page’ message. Hmmmm! Article withdrawn?

Think I’ll keep my powder dry until the facts come out as to who and what.  Lots of people have been deemed fit and proper people to run football clubs by the FA/FL and half of them have turned out to be be no marks, chancers or crooks.

Try this one.

Excellent. It must be happening as we signed 2 strikes who we wouldn't normally be able to pay salaries for. It shows contingencies are already in place for transfer and salarie fees.

What a load of horse excrement. There's no way JF would blow the budget for next season on players based on somebody potentially taking over, then get left to make up the loss.

I'm expecting a minimum of 4000 season ticket holders next season, since everybody on here "knows loads of people who will buy a season ticket when he's gone". I doubt it's true, but hope it is.

If you look here https://mobile.twitter.com/thstas this is his Twitter account. Please see my post on rumour mill which gives full list of his directorships. I can't find any picture or personal details on him so don't know how old he is but his main business is a property development company turning over £30 million pa. Which doesn't put him into the multi millionaire bracket.I was told about 2 Gy exiles being involved whether that's his sister or a super rich backer like ross, I don't know. He is obviously a very altruistic individual who cares greatly about art architecture and grimsby.wastold months ago that he wasn't a fan per se but wAnted to put summat back into gy. Have a look at the museum of everything has some interesting/ challenging art Works!

I have seen a quote in there from Fenty saying the usual "my door is always open for somebody to "join the board" who has the clout to do so.

If it turns out it is just somebody joining the board, whilst that is a positive, it would be a huge let down as opposed to a full takeover.

If you have seen that quote you should also have seen the below as well.

"EFL checks and due diligence
Again, just to reiterate, this proposed takeover is much further down the line than rumour.

As we understand it, relevant checks with the EFL have been undertaken - and passed - although there is more red tape to go through. Once again, we really welcome hearing what YOU have got to say on the development."

If it was just someone joining the board I doubt the telegraph would be getting so excited.

Heard it is Shutes and others. Despite being owners they will not play a role in running the club and Fenty will continue to remain on the board.

That would make sense if neither are footy fans.shame tho because we really do need some fresh thinking new ideas and a different direction.mind you ,you don't run a £30 million company by just spending money and not having some input as to how it is spent!

Why on earth would they do that?? They will want their own men running the show. It is not as if Fenty is doing a good job is it?

Regardless if you like the bloke or not he has always stood up to be counted and is a town man through and through..

I've just made a rather interesting discovery. Don't know it's a weird coincidence but it's safe to say that Shutes and David ross are at least acquaintances from Gy regeneration project. You may remember that Ross's 'partner in crime ' at Carphone wArehouse was Charles Dunstone.Mr Dunstone in 2009 married Celia Gordon Shute .is this just a misspelling? It's a very unusual name, or have tom shutes and David ross had a long term friendship? Could ross be the second man and the man with the real spending power?

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Do we know if it is just Tom Shutes or are there others involved, I wouldn't mind David Ross as a silent partner.

He looks to be a good guy with good ethics, who cares about things that could affect local people's lives for the better and hopefully be good for our beloved Mariners.

From the telegraph:

"Sources with knowledge of the talks say that Shutes is passionate about Grimsby, and is keen to further extend the club’s influence into the community. That could also accelerate plans for a new community stadium to replace Town's ageing Blundell Park."

If he really wants to properly connect club and community, what more could we ask for? Passion off the pitch for the club and the fans will only lead to a better period on it.

This is amazing news we all know football success is driven by funds and this guy seems richer than Fenty. Modernise the board with football minded individuals that want success.

This may be a controversial view but I’d hate to see us start losing that amount of money.  If it all goes wrong the club could end up in a worse place.  A bit of investment to modernise the club, get get the stadium project going and attract a handful of quality players and then aim to live within our means would do for me.

EDIT - Sorry LondonMariner meant to respond to another post! Needless to say I agree with your view.

Please correct me if I am wrong but based on his previous business ventures (what Forza and others have dug up on here and whats in the telegraph) he does not seem to be the flash in the pan sort and will be throwing money at it.

I think the focus will be on reconnecting the club and the town. If we double season ticket sales as a consequence (probably unlikely) then this would be a significant windfall in any case for the playing budget.

Also if the takeover does get over the line it will be very interesting to see what the Mariners Trust role will now be. Really hoping the new guy wants them to be an integral part of the club going forward.

Jesus fuccking Christ, this place knocks me ill.

Is it beyond people to look at the bigger picture for 30 seconds and not reduce everything down to the size of any owner’s wallet? We don’t know a great deal about this bloke but given his write up in the Telegraph, he looks forward thinking, well connected and like someone who could finally get a proper stadium project over the line. If we’re looking at restoring some pride and potential back in this dead club, THAT is the one thing that will make or break us. Not whether or not he’ll fund a league two left back on £5k a week who’ll be with us for 18 months.

Pissing cash up the wall on players doesn’t mean a great deal - look at Notts County last year. And having a rich owner doesn’t mean it’s an automatically good deal for the club - ask any Newcastle fan what they think of billionaire Mike Ashley.

We need someone to drag this club into the 21st Century, hopefully this is someone who can do it. Players come & go, it’s the club that needs the most work this summer.

Not controversial for me. The thought of watching Town play Championship or even PL football in a decade is a dream for me but is achievable with big money investment. I would get more joy watching us get there in 20 years if it comes with proper investment in the club’s infrastructure, winning the Town over and getting 10k crowds in to BP regularly to build finances and the added bonus of the Town becoming a nicer place to live.

I’ve got my conoco hat at the ready!  It’s faded a bit since I received it in what felt like 1628.

In all seriousness, this is a great bit of news for all connected with the club, we’ve waited and waited for something positive after years of abject performances, free fall through the leagues and the cycle of manger after manager, player after player just picking up their retirement bonus.

All I ask for as a town fan is someone who ensures we’re financially secure, cares about the club and the surrounding area and how to engage fans now but also the future generation. We don’t like Lincoln, but look at their Match day experience with the fan zone... so easy to replicate and helps bring a sense of togetherness about the place.

If we get a new stadium out of this then he’ll have the backing of 99.9% of the fans and will have done more than Fenty during his stewardship.

Onwards and upwards! It’s potentially a very good time to be a town fan!!

What a crock of shite this is. Firstly, he’s going to have more money than any old Tom, male private or Harry.

Secondly and more to the point, the main gripe people had with the current regime is that nothing changed in 17 years. The club had been left behind, BP allowed to fall in to a state of disrepair and the relationship between board and fans was at an all time low. If somebody comes in and modernises the club, improves the match day experience as well as getting the fans back on side then I don’t care if they don’t come in and throw a ton of money at it. Down the road at Lincoln they haven’t chucked money at it, just reinvested money they got from their cup run and about £250K per season from their new chairman which isn’t that much.

If the old board is removed and the new one is progressive and starts to create something the fans can get behind then the amount of money available will increase anyway. At that point it is up to us, if we really want a team worth investing time and money in then we’ll have to show a new regime that there is the capacity for greater support when there is something worth supporting.

I think ‘patience’ is the key word here.
Hopefully the news will boost ST sales and give the transfer kitty a much needed boost.
However, these things take time to evolve.
Like most on here, I’m more than happy to welcome a much needed new regime.
But let’s not expect miracles overnight.
And as Ska says. It’s not about coming in a throwing money at the club. There’s a hell of a lot of restructuring throughout to be done. And I must say, first impressions look good.

I’ve slated JF for not making it easier to sell the club. But if he’s held out for someone like this then maybe an apology is due.  Someone with local connections is far more likely to look after the club.

And yours reeks of completely ignoring what people have been saying for years (and also of you being a bit slow...).

We currently have a majority shareholder who’s put nothing into the club for years but is taking £200k out and people still fall at his feet. We’re being drunk on & told it’s raining.

Investment comes in many forms - sponsorship, TV money, merchandise, tickets and most of it comes out of the pockets of fans, not chairmen. At the minute, we see nothing to increase ANY of that money coming in. People would be happy with “investment” coming from anywhere, and the only reason people want to see Fenty stick his hand in his pocket is because of his relaxed attitude to losing money in all other areas. Think most people would be happier to sell another million quid’s worth of season tickets than get a £1m handout from a chairman (that he might want back in 16 years...).

Do try & keep up at the back.

fans wont increase unless we start winning, and winning on a regular basis, no white knight in shining armour is going to change that.

Show me the money, and now. Player investment has to be the priority, not a lick of paint in the toilets.

And you need to understand that success starts on the pitch, in player investment, and being able to increase the amount of money we can spend on wages. This board has winged on and on about player budget, not keeping up with the Jones'....unless Mr Shute addresses that then the club will remain stagnant in League 2....you think this is some sort of game Shute is playing, whereby he wont want a return on investment?   If he doesnt address the Player Budget as a first priority...then its pointless.

The man’s greatest asset is that he isn’t John Fenty.

I hope he doesn’t squander that.

He seems like the right sort (Shute).  Hopefully there’ll still be a place at the top table for the Trust. For the club to move forward in a sustainable way there’s got to be a partnership with the fans.

And as Lm43, Ska and others have said, I hope it brings a fresh start to build up the club through growing the revenue, not through splashing the cash.

As for the BoysaPillock, let’s not be too harsh on the hard of thinking. He seems to have a genuine inability to distinguish between different views and statements. One day people will understand this sad affliction and sufferers won’t be stigmatised and marginalised.

Looking at his track record I am happy someone of that calibre is coming to the club - if it does eventually all go well. If he's well connected then there is always the potential to do what JF has been unable to do, and that is to attract further external investment.

Like others though I'd hate to see money thrown at the club , especially without a well thought out plan in place, such as "I'd like to see Championship Football at GTFC again by 2025" which gives them time, space, and opportunity to rebuild the club from top to bottom. Get folk into the place who know how top clubs operate and mirror what they do.

If we achieve something special this year that would be an added bonus, but let's not hamper the club with expectations that can not be met. Patience really is a virtue.

30k a week isnt a massive wage budget nowadays. Take your average squad of 22 and it works out at an average wage of £1364 per week. Obviously some players on more, some less but I believe I read somewhere that last season our top earners were John Welsh and Ben Pringle on around £1500 a week.

It's not about pumping money in for me it's more about having fresh ideas moving forward and getting this club in to the 21st century.. I'm  not expecting championship football or for us to be mega rich, I just want a well run sustainable club who plays football to please the fans. Id settle for constant attacks on the league 2 table or more ambitiously mid table division 1. But more importantly ii want us to unite fans and club as one.

Not sure why people are falling out over this. He's not some dodgy Asian/Russian businessman, he's not some scally with a string of debt and business closures behind him, he's not even a shady hedge-funder from S Africa with no connections to the club (but this hasn't done Lincoln any harm yet).

His background shows he likes to invest and improve things. He's part of the regeneration of Gy to make things better, more investable, to give people a chance to flourish. He's not planning a glitzy Las Vegas bunch of casinos, nor planning on a giant gold statue of himelf nor any typical British white elephant vanity projects, he's looking to bring Grimsby into the modern era and bring success and prosperity with it.
With that approach and mindset I welcome him to the task of doing said things to my beloved football club.

Costing me a fortune in data this thread... I'm over in Corfu (just to make you jealous it's 34 Deg and wall to wall blue sky) and constantly refreshing my phone waiting for "that's it, GTFC welcome Tom Shute as the new owner of the football club"..
The one sentiment I'd like to echo is that of " thanks for doing your best in keeping the club afloat" to Me Fenty...
Yes, through his tenure he's devided opinions, caused contraversy, said the wrong things at the wrong times but he tried his best and unfortunately his best just wasn't good enough for the long term future of the club...
So, if this deal is struck, here's to a bright future with the club becoming the centre of a reunited community with fresh ideas, new infrastructure and a will to succeed...

Firstly it's SHUTES with that famous grimsby S emoji
I don't think he's loaded ,I suspect he may not even be as cash rich as fent y but there are consistent stories that there is at least one other person involved.I wondered if that might his wife but others with better sources than me say that the other person or persons are the ones with the serious money. The most likely suspect is ross who Shutes has a close relationship with and have known each other for years. However it's been suggested that there may be other people, presumably influential, who will also be getting involved.
There is also a very interesting little story going around that the land at freemo will be used for other purposes and there are moves to get our new stadium on the docks.fish dock no.3 has been mentioned. This comes on the back of stories a couple of months ago that ABP had suddenly had a volte face in their previous attitude and were keen to come on board with the regeneration plan.
As shutes and Ross don't seem to be footie people and are more interested in the regeneration side ,personally I'd be surprised if they were going to throw stupid money at the playing budget. It may well be, given the 2 players already signed, plus the 3 good names that we are after, that Holley is given a decent budget.I suspect their main focus will be on the new ground and dragging the club into the 21st century. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find that one of their first moves is to appoint a chief executive.
I have to say I'm enormously excited and at last ,after so many years, fent y has finally come good with his hairs on the back of our necks promise!

Apologies for my laziness. Can someone summarise, in a couple of sentences, the current status. Are we being taken over? By whom? Is Fenty disappearing?

As Bing Crosby used to sing:

I'm dreaming of a Black and White Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the New Pontoon glistens
And children listen
To the chanting here we go we go
I'm dreaming of a Welly Christmas
And a quick pint before the game
May your Pea Bung fish be alright
And may all your chips be a delight

Oops, a bit carried away there.

Ironic that some of us (me included) are now dropping Ss where there is one. A lesser known feature of our dialect.

If Fenty remains a minority shareholder can't the fans potentially club together and buy all the shares off him? Or buy some of the shares atleast to make him even less influential?

Cheers. Just read the Telegraph article. Spoken with a family member who actually met him on a separate matter a few weeks ago. For what it is worth, he said he was a genuine guy who seemed to have the regeneration of Grimsby in his heart.

A quick search for 'Philanthropist'...
"A philanthropist is a person who donates time, money, experience, skills or talent to help create a better world. "
There's nothing 'in it' for true Philanthropists(other than satisfaction of helping out), not to be confused with the durrent dirge of celebrity-types who do stuff for 'charidee' while promoting themselves and their music/books.
This guy looks to tick all the boxes though.

Fwiw i think it might be a 'hobby project' for them, a bit like he's done with his art n architecture interests. He's comfortably off, doesn't seem the sort like Phillip green or Ashley who need to be doing deals and making money even though they're rich enough already, so devoted his time energy and intellect to ino interesting worthwhile projects. Perhaps best to look at him like one of those rich Victorian philanthropist s , but for the 21st century. He certainly seems v.different to most other football chairmen

Players come & go, it’s the club that needs the most work this summer.

aye...the books show that the club has been breaking even more or less on average over the last few years and thats while the club has stood still / gone backwards under the current stewardship....someone with a bit of understanding and community buy in could increase support....city knowledge could help increase the commercial income ......so without throwing loads of personal cash in, income could be vastly increased.
A flashy razzle dazzle money bags type owner could be more dangerous in the long run.
With him having a part in the Grimsby deal then he obviously has a wider interest which is a little bit of reassurance that he isnt looking for a quick buck.
Fingers crossed.

I wonder if jolley is as excited as we are.suspect that they will find a kindred spirit in him and he must be running his hands on glee at not having to deal with j.f. Control freakery and actually having a decent budget and boss to work with.

Clubs can only spend a certain percentage of their turnover on wages. I don't know how we fare on that but if we are spending the maximum, pumping money in couldn't be spent on wages anyway.

We need a commercially driven CEO who will actively chase sponsorships and 7 day income streams as an owner throwing money at it doesn't count as revenue.

I would be much happier if we drove forward with the stadium, improved our training facilities and brought in a couple of sponsors. A feel good factor would improve fan and staff morale, which in turn should improve results.

Improved results equal improved gates, which obviously increases turnover.

The opportunity could be here now to clear out the dead wood and press forward with some of the excellent marketing professionals we have involved (Sam Strandt and Liam Emmerson).

That wasn't the total wage budget, that was the loss he was covering.

Scunthorpe’s last 2 published accounts show a combined loss of around £14.5m. And the next accounts will include paying off 2 managers and their huge (ultimately futile) spending spree last January.

Personally I hope they do throw some cash at the playing budget (which we have moaned about every season for years) Progressing the new stadium is one thing and it sounds like Shutes may have that as a priority but I don't want GTFC to have the best ground in the Conference

The 2 signings so far show that there is money to improve the budget.neither of those 2 come cheap and neither do the 3 other names that are being touted around. From what I've been told we were seriously close to landing devitt ,another player who'd have been well out of our league last season.
But thanks for injecting your usual dose of negativity.

Just got back from holiday and waded through 15 pages of joyous news. Few things that stand out:
- he sounds like a good guy with the town at heart
- someone asked what's in it for him, well he's a property developer and there's a lot of waste land going spare
- most important thing I've read is that the club will be at the heart of the community, and that's what has been missing for years. Players in schools and factories, using the passion of the fans to attract investment into the town and create jobs etc. etc.

Hope it happens very soon

The last sentence is unfair Forza, it is not negativity. Quite the opposite, we all know that results on the field today are more important than a new stadium tomorrow and that lift of spirits is what will make the takeover a success. Therefore the playing budget is the number one priority.

Interesting thought about your first remark though - if those two signings have not come cheap and we almost got Devitt, who paid for it if the takeover hasn't yet gone through?

The Club and Hullberside are not exactly on great terms are they...not a coincidence to me that none of their reporters seemed to have any idea something might be happening.

Whoever fed the telegraph the story did not feed it to them, which makes it sound like it was from the club to me.

What's the betting this proposed takeover falls through last minute because Fenty and Marley etc demand to stay influential in the decision making at the club and Fenty and Marley then claim they pulled out because of the fans.

If this all goes through and Fenty ends up no longer being a major shareholder in the club, one would assume this means he won't have to opt out of key decisions regarding Grimsby Town's new stadium as Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Skills and Housing.

That would be suicide surely. No one would believe that this proposal doesn’t give a sh1t about the fans. I’m used to being let down, but surely this has too much credit to it. !!

I suspect more likely the reality of relinquishing control is beginning to hit JF and he’s reversing engines so they feed this vague story.

No problem sunshine Your post that the new man was here to rebuild Grimsby into the European city of culture rather than taking GTFC into the Premiership gave me the idea. It certainly sounds like he's more interested in the regeneration of Grimsby the town rather than Grimsby Town the football club and anyway I'm not convinced he's got a pot to urine in

Quoted from Davec
Radio Humberside reporting the club has told them offers have been received but no proof of funds or fit and proper persons tests have been passed yet.

That's the opposite of what the Grim Tel said. 'The new owner-in-waiting has passed the owners' and directors test which, in essence, is a Football Association and Football League (EFL) led process that determines whether or not an individual, or company, has the capacity or necessary funds to own and operate a football club.'

A guide to the test is given here.

https://www.lawinsport.com/top.....-in-english-football

It gives timescales which shows that if the GT is correct, the application must have been made a few weeks ago (10 days +) by the club.

'The application is made by the club itself rather than the individual director. This can impact on the timing of an acquisition of a club. On an acquisition, usually a club does not want to make an application for a new owner/director to be approved until such time as it is certain that the acquisition is to proceed. Sometimes the acquisition documentation is signed before the club makes the application, and completion of the deal is conditional on the application being approved by the relevant league, which can cause a slight delay in the deal completing.

'In terms of timing on the appointment of a director or new owner, advanced notification is required, and the club needs to make the application at least 10 working days prior to the date on which the person is to become a director, and the league is required to respond within five working days of receipt of the application to confirm in the case of the EPL whether or not the person can become a director or is disqualified, and in the case of the EFL to advise on the expected timing to consider an application.'

There’s a big difference between ‘it’s all tosh’ and ‘it’s all tosh apparently’.

I’ve been a little critical of the Grimsby Telegraph in the past but journalists don’t usually run stories like this unless they’ve got facts corroborated by at least two sources.

Can you give Mr Fenty a call Pete and check with him if the takeover is still on?

The last sentence is unfair Forza, it is not negativity. Quite the opposite, we all know that results on the field today are more important than a new stadium tomorrow and that lift of spirits is what will make the takeover a success. Therefore the playing budget is the number one priority.

Interesting thought about your first remark though - if those two signings have not come cheap and we almost got Devitt, who paid for it if the takeover hasn't yet gone through?

With the players released and JF admitting that he set the budget too low last season then the signing of two quality players does not really surprise me. Even if there were two or three more quality signings it doesn't necessarily mean that those wages are being " bankrolled ". Considering MJ's background in the financial world then I'm sure he will be able to get the best out of what playing budget is available. We also have several players who have come through the Youth ranks who could figure a lot in the coming season and I'm sure they won't be on colossal wages. I'm sure things about who we have will certainly become a lot clearer by the time the players report back for training.

If this all goes through and Fenty ends up no longer being a major shareholder in the club, one would assume this means he won't have to opt out of key decisions regarding Grimsby Town's new stadium as Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Skills and Housing.

If he still remains a shareholder, regardless of how many shares he holds, then he will have to declare that as an interest and would be prevented from making council decisions on anything to do with the new ground.

Although if it is Shutes plus Ross in the background they cannot just spend willy nilly due to financial fair play rules, unless we ask the Man City accountants how to fund considerable transfers. Also if Shutes makes her s money through property he may be able to get Freeman sorted due to his experience.

Unfortunately this isn't strictly true. FFP or SCMP, whatever it's called now says clubs can only spend 56/60% of their turnover depending on their league bu Accrington's chairman confirmed on Twitter a few weeks ago that this is a load of shite. Why? Well because it turns out these 'rules' (unbelievably) are actually optional. At the bottom of the forms that need to be sent to the EFL/FA there's a box that can be ticked that essentially says clubs can spend what they like if the owner is happy to underwrite it. So essentially the likes of Salford can still spend what they like even at this level.

Tweet 1127514668363407367 will appear here...

That being said I wouldn't want out playing budget to be bankrolled, I want it to be within our means. As others have said I'd prefer investment to be infrastructure and facilities to drag our club into the 21st century and towards investing in the community to enable us to tap into the potential for or fan base to grow, therefore helping to give us a bigger playing budget in the future.

I really hope this takeover happens, it's exactly what the club needs and in my opinion the only way we can move forwards as a club. Exciting times could be ahead it happens.

It is a long time since the GT was a proper newspaper with proper journalists so not much to choose between RH and the Daily Mirror in the truth stakes. But I cannot think this bloke would have let his name and photo be touted as a Liam Wood “exclusive” if there wasn’t some reality about the business.

As long as the new owner (if there actually is one) doesn’t large it on the front page of the GET spouting “We’re taking Town to the Premier” they’ll do for me!

I’m not that bothered if they don’t throw big money at us as long as they have ambition, energy, enthusiasm and drive it will be a start.

So I think I read that they have passed the fit and proper person test all they’ll need to do now is pass the FISHY and proper person test ✅ and they’ll be a rip roaring success.

Well to be honest, Shutes did indeed approach the club to make a takeover bid, and stated he wanted to build new group as part of the regeneration. That was over a year ago, and I'm sure talks will have continued - but as I understand it he has still not 'shown the money' - I expect that he is exactly who Fenty was calling a 'tyre kicker' - ofc there is every chance that some board members are kept in the dark but I seriously doubt it... I REALLY want this all to be true as much as the next person so don't think I'm quashing hopes for nothing... - this isn't 'grapevine' word, I rang my source directly.

Well Mr Shutes seems happy enough to take the story to the Telegraph so it can't be total balderdash.  Is this part of the negotiation game?  I just feel that if it was untrue we'd have had a furiously written statement storming out of GTFC's press office by now.

Sorry Buttty but if has already passed the 'fiit and proper,'  test by the EFL, which this information came to Liam Wood directly from the EFL then Mr Shutes is no 'tyre kicker'as Fenty may have called him..
The test has to prove he has the financial backing to run the club for a minimum of 2 years..
I think you're source has probably been on the "sauce"..

Is the director you know aware and happy for you to make public the information he gives you? Seems like a bit of an abuse of trust to me and more than a little bit indiscreet by him and you.

I've had two family members as ex employees of GTFC and I never betrayed their trust once. If I posted anything they told me I never revealed my source or said too much.
Mind you, I never had a stand named after a friend's relative!

I get most of my info from my cousin who happens to have the oldest stand in the EFL named after him. I'm sure Martin Main won't mind the name drop.

Maybe I am clutching at straws but I did not read that tweet from Radio Humberside as a flat out denial...Seems odd none of their sports reporters seem to be in the loop though. But then why would the telegraph have gone to the lengths of stating who is the potential person behind the takeover if it is nonsense?

I am not sure if it is wanting this to happen which is preventing me from accepting it might not happen. Not sure what the reaction would be if this did not now happen.

EDIT: Did I miss the sarcasm in your post?

Liam Wood from the telegraph has made a big deal about this so he wouldn't have done that if he wasn't almost certain? Because if it doesn't happen that makes him look an idiot and why would he put himself in that position? Radio Humberside haven't had a good working relationship with the club for years so I don't think it's strange that the club are playing a straight bat to Radio Humberside, if Liam Wood reckons this is very close to happening then I hope he's right

From all I've read it could be in the next day or 2. I think fent y got back from his hols Friday .whether he's playing silly bugggers and holding out for  a bit more i don't know but that might explain the denials.
FAO Malta wasn't really being sarcastic, just factual on this occasion.how much store you put on Butty as a source is another matter.
One last thing which keeps me positive is the thought of the repercussions of the bid was knocked back. There would be absolute hell to pay. It seems like the thing has gone too far for it to fail.that's what I'm clinging to anyway.
What I'm dying to hear is rumours of stories of a press conference being arranged

Held back from saying anything about this so far because nothing is official yet.. but there will be hell to pay if it doesn't happen. Proven by the poll in the Telegraph. Only 4% of voters want the owners of the club to stay the same. That blows the myths of silent majorities and vocal minorities right out of the water. The club, the town and its fans are ready for a change and have been for a long time. At the minute I would guess that nothing is signed and sealed yet, but a deal is extremely close, and I'm not too concerned about Radio Humberside putting out a clumsy and contrary statement especially if it came from the board, we all know how they can operate at times. Get ready for when it is officially announced Pen Penfras because there will be a massive surge for season tickets and a huge upswell of support for a new regime, and finally, it will be proven that those posters who have been consistently negative about this current regime knew what they were talking about when it comes to the huge potential of a brave new dawn.

Keeping everything crossed here until an official announcement. Far too much at stake for the deal to go wrong..

These things do take time and the EFL and company rules will dictate that too.  There are waiting periods between fit and proper person tests and people assuming control.  There will be final approvals on funding and financials.  Other shareholders will need to be informed.  This story broke on Friday so there's pretty much only been five or six "business hours" between that and the weekend.  It's unlikely anything will happen over a weekend and we also know some key people have been away.

This means that you're only ever going to get either denials or straight-bat answers to the media until it's all worked out.  Even Butty's source, who I don't doubt, has probably given Butty the correct information, but that's not to say things wouldn't change.

I really hope this is true and we get the new ownership we desperately need for both the club and the town, but in business and football nothing's certain.  If it does happen, I also think that whatever we've said in the past about GYFR (and I've said some things that have maybe gone too far), we should enter the spirit of the fresh start, by wishing him the best as he steps down and returns to the terraces as a supporter.  No good can come of grudge-bearing and vindictiveness.

You can only marvel at the Fishy and how to really pi1ss on someone's parade with what to me seems the biggest load of b0ll0cks from "somebody in the know" Don't know about an upsurge in season ticket sales, but I reckon Boots may well sell out of Mogadon by the end of play.

Playing Devils Advocate, this doesn't prove anything at all. If only the vocal minority voted and the quiet majority didn't, then this is a strawman argument.

They're not exactly going to shout it from the rooftops before the ink is dry.

Liam Wood hasn't made it up and is not exactly going to shred his career by making spurious claims. Something is happening clearly, let's just have a little patience and let things take their course.

Having read this thread from the beginning were everybody or almost everybody are over the moon about the news of a take over.

To morbid depression thinking nothing will happen because Uncle shut up told Butty nothing is happening.

I would like to say relax guys these things takes a lot of time,

All will be revealed as soon as the contracts have been signed or talks have broken down.

We all hope well 96% of us want it to happen and I think as Tom ( if I may call him Tom ) is a property developer and is wanting to help his own Town to come into the 21st century there must be a bit of truth in reports of what is happening,

I do not care what radio Ull say because they know nothing because the club do not talk to them and as far as the telewag goes most of the time they just make it up.

So lets be patience and wait for the official announcement  that the club is in new hands or not.

Leaks do come out when anything like this is happening and I think too many leaks have come out for it to be untrue that's why the telewag have come out with the story.

Lets hope the matter is resolved sooner rather than later.

We will see, it's like a drug, have tried my best to give up and the current set up is the main reason but it's not that easy, when you live away from the town everybody you know who's interested in football knows you as the Grimsby fan.
Decided I wasn't bothering this season, read this thread and suddenly found myself looking at hotels in Morecombe and strategies for breaking it to the Mrs.

In all seriousness, who is 'shut up' ? Marley? Can i just get straight that i want this to happen as much as anyone, As a few have said its entirely plausible that what i've been told is just a 'smoke grenade' - it is even possible that my source may be in the dark on this for one reason or another...

Looking back at your post history, you range being absolutely ITK to not having a clue about anything, so forgive us if some of us are somewhat sceptical.

Haha, yep that's fair enough to be sure, sometimes I just offer opinion - but I've known my source on an info basis for under a year . Everything I've said about wages etc is true - or at least a regurgitation of what I'm told by him.

You would think the BBC would also, especially as we are now having a women's team.

I presume it is something to do with infamous fan forum, and I think perhaps Marley shouted that but can't remember as saw the video a long while back

In all honesty - all the ‘I know this/that/itk’ Stuff is incredibly dull and something a 10 year old would partake in. Whether it’s owner rumours, signings or how many had a fry up for breakfast.

Butty’s source clearly seems to be Old Shut Up. Maybe he (Marley) is not wrong but simply out of touch (imagine!) ie not in the loop. Yes, got the letter but not been kept up to speed on progress by the Boss, who maybe realised what a liability he has turned out to be to him.

I can imagine the scenario. JSF picks up phone to Ian Fleming.

‘Ian, I have a mission for you while I’m away in the Maldives. Get on your cellphone and give the heads up to the EFL (he’s up with biz lingo you know). Tell them we want them to run a flit and proper person’s check on Tom Shutes for the takeover.’
‘OK John. Do you want me to let anyone else know while I’m at it. I’ve got that young Liam from the Evening Telegraph with me.’
‘Don’t worry I’ll tell the others myself after I get back. Oh, if them buggers from Humberside call about it put them on to Stephen.’

You have my word that Marley is not my source, though I've been hoping exactly what you've said applies to my source too. He's not one of the Fenty brigade so him being kept in the dark for fear of him questioning the authority of the 'supreme leader jsf' is quite possible! Fingers crossed, hopefully we will hear something one way or the other in the next few days.

Shares owned by current board members...

£975,000 - Fenty
£3,200 - Marley
£2,500 - Day
£500 - Chapman
£500 - Wood

With the greatest respect to the other 4 board members, they are completely irrelevant to anyone wishing to buy GTFC. A new owner would have to buy out Fenty & Fenty alone. As long as the person passes the EFL fit and proper person tests Fenty can sell his shares to that person. He doesn't need board approval to sell his own personal shareholding.

Until a deal is ready to be signed, what Fenty tells the other 4 is up to him. I can't imagine Fenty would tell anything to the board representative (Jon Wood?) especially.

Good grief, if one single reason exists to get new and substantial investment into this club, there it is..

£3,200 - Marley
£2,500 - Day
£500 - Chapman
£500 - Wood

£3,200 is apparently the going rate to let you lord it over the minions and tell them to shut up.

Marley increased his shareholding from £2,000 to £3,200 during the 2017/18 accounting period. Presumably the extra £1,200 is the difference between being civil with Town fans and telling them to "shut up".

I think we can gather that something is going to happen, more from what Fenty wouldn’t say rather than what he did. Seems he’s remaining tight lipped as a mutual respect to Mr. Shutes who has done the same for about a year now it would seem.

I think the line "my times up" said it for me...would expect they are going to sit down and hopefully finalise the deal sooner rather than later..
I for one, for once in my life, am staying optimistic.
Only concern is Liam Wood said Shutes had passed the EFL "Fit and proper persons" test and I'm not sure if JSF just denied this had happened yet??

I would disagree.  I think something is going on, but to say something is actually going to happen is jumping the gun.  I fully expect this to all fall flat in the coming weeks.

A little sideswipe at Liam Wood from John there. Just listened to Liam's piece on GT website. He is clear that Shutes has passed the EFL scrutiny. John says that process can only go forward with directors involvement and so far there has not been anything concrete to start that submission to the EFL. Who to believe?

Seems to be on, been in talks 12 months but basically until deal done can't say much. Says not passed fit and proper person test as no formal offer submitted yet... but that could be a smokecreen?

Basically saying he's wanted out for years, so hopefully if it does come off there's a clean sweep of the boardroom bringing in fresh ideas and Fenty doesn't hang about.

Thanks to Mr. Fenty for supporting us through dark times, despite the f**k ups, but if it does come off I'd like to see a fresh start with a forward thinking Chief Executive after things turning a bit sour in recent times.

Just checked the rules re: fit and proper persons test and...

Because the club can only submit the director's test upon a new owner buying a club the general practice now in place is for contracts to be exchanged with the proviso that the deal is null and void if the new owner(s) doesn't/don't pass the EFL directors test.

i.e. A deal could be completed and contracts signed off, but it would be totally honest for a club to deny the deal is agreed because it would only be formally completed and finalised upon the directors test being passed.

Also, each club has to resubmit each of their owners/directors/shadow directors for the test 14 days before the start of a new EFL season.

They’re all in the JF brigade. This poster is full of crap.

No idea who John wood is, I can assure you that there are members of the board Fenty has actively stated to me that he would love to be bought out.

Fenty has said the same publicly numerous times. And he's just said it again very, very clearly on Radio Humberside in a speech almost as deluded as Theresa May's resignation speech..

We'll know for sure it's going ahead when JF starts talking about "his legacy"

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

Fenty's legacy is secure. In his first season as Town chairman we finished 18th in League Two. In his (hopefully) last season as Town non-Chairman we finished 17th in League Two. It's a shame he's leaving because at that rate of progress we would be promoted in the 2128/2129 season.

He can say and think what he likes for me so long as allows fresh blood to come in and mosies off into the Sunset.

Personally I'd have a more humble approach 'I know I've made mistakes and not got everything right but I tried my best and bankrolled the club with significant amounts of my own hard earned money, I hope people can appreciate that' or suchlike

6 minutes that absolutely underlined why so many will be uncorking the champers when the book firmly closes on the Fenty chapter. 6 minutes of bullsh1t and bluster, clichés and unnecessary digs at the local press that the club relies on. Then a reference to his own legacy that’d make Kim Jong Il blush.

Just get the paperwork signed and disappear off into the sunset.
