“I think it’s been well documented now that I’ve turned down a few jobs in League Two, I turned down one last week, and I turned down Assistant Coach at Standard Liege in Belgium before that.

That presumably was the Morecambe job which explains the announcement getting delayed last Friday (apparently). Good luck to him, hope he turns out to be a great appointment.

Good appointment.  Time to build on the steadying of the ship that Pearson and Davies have done.

Bit surprised it's Pearson who's assistant, not that it's a grumble. I just thought it would be Davies who, on paper, seems to be further down that path (although it might be he doesn't want to go down that route, just happy enough coaching).

Welcome David.

Well, a bit of a change in style from Hursty Welcome aboard David. Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the club.

Happy with that.

He says he turned down a job in L2 last week, so imagine that would’ve been Morecambe and where the delay came from.

Fresh start, clean slate, glad to have him here.

I’ll give him til February.

Really pleased with it, ticks most of the boxes we initially set out.

If he really can give us some attacking football then we’ve a lot to look forward to.

No rolling contract this time.

Hope he can get off to a flier tomorrow night, and first home game is against his old club Crewe.

Just hoping for a positive impact for the coming weeks and getting away from the bottom.

Glad to see Shaun rewarded too.

Welcome.

Excellent choice. No panic in appointing someone too , we got who we wanted.

Best we could have got and we got him. We'll done the board and special mention to shaun and Ben for looking after the clubs affairs in the short term

I think it's more a case of Ben already does a lot within the club around working with the youth etc, trying to bridge that pathway between the youth and first team.. also not so sure he actually wants to be a manager. Think he's very settled in the area and loves his job. Shaun has aspirations to be a manager and has shown all the qualities of a good number 2 since being in caretaker charge.

First time I have heard him speak, and came across well and saying all the right things. Can’t blame him for talking to Morecambe as well, but good to see it was the owners who have made the difference.

Proofs in the results on the pitch of course, but for now it is up to us as fans to get behind the team and the new manager and give them time to put things right.

I know we are not in a great place at the moment but if everyone wants the same thing and is pushing in the same direction, then not a lot more can be asked at the moment.

Not sure if I’ve missed this anywhere, but has there been any indication as to whether he’ll be in the dugout at BFS? I’d have assumed a watching brief, but if he’s been keeping tabs on things for the past few weeks he may already have some ideas he wants to enact.

At the bottom of the club statement, it says his first match will be tomorrow night, so assume he will be in charge.

Just listened to Matt Dean on RH, he's going to be on the touchline for the 2nd half tomorrow.

Righto! The statement wasn't clear and just said his first game is tomorrow night.

Seems an odd way to do it though. Don't think I've ever heard of a new manager taking over a team at half time.

I think Tom Casey for 12 caps for NI, according to Wiki anyway.

When Artell was first mentioned I wasn't keen but the more I got to see what he was about and understand I think this is a good appointment.

Well that's a relief! With all the rumours flying around over the last few days and being reminded on Saturday of what will be required over the coming weeks and months, this is probably the best appointment we could have expected. So well done to all and well done to Shaun for being made assistant. I feel the positivity returning. UTM

Far from being 'the best we could expect', David was the owners first choice, and they eventually succeeded in signing him.  I really hope that ALL GTFC supporters will get behind David and be patient.  It's not going to be easy from the start and he will need time to sort out his best squad, and time to get the players playing his way.

I wish him good luck and would like to welcome him to GTFC.  UTM.

I've just heard a segment of the interview he gave to radio Humberside.

It rather reminded me of when Alan Buckley first came - he was very excited with a cast iron plan on how the club should progress, and most importantly can see the potential of the club and what it means to the supporters and the town. Inspiring stuff and it is great to have a manager who seems to have a real plan on how to get the best out of players.

Didn't know a great deal about Artell before the last few days but I feel quite pleased about this appointment.

I listened to that podcast/interview with Gab Sutton and the interview posted today and, in addition to the views and posts about his time as Crewe gaffer, he seems a good fit.

The comments are all largely positive and I like that. We have a mix of players are are playing well/underachievers or simply not of the standard required. Artell has to be given time to sort this. I think with this appointment we will be comfortably off the relegation places, however given our record over the last 20 years the change we want won't be overnight. Please be patient

Lots of people asking for patience. I think we've been about as patient as you could be supporting this team. Myself for  most of 52 years with a few memorable seasons thrown in.

We aren't in it for the glamour and the trophies.

Keeping us away from the bottom 2 will do for now.

I quite like the cut of his gib now I've heard his interview.  I hope he can install an "identity" because if I am honest I have got really bored of our football and the one step forward and two back approach. I have got to the point where I really don't know if we're a good team playing poorly or just a poor team playing poor. Whilst points are paramount I just want to be entertained and although an exile I have found myself unmotivated to make the journey to watch them on a number of occasions.
I have learnt the hard way not to go mad with appointments for both managers and players but I have a good feeling that Artell could be a really good fit for the club and team. UTM

Fingers crossed. Hope he does well.

He talked about being impressed by the owners and their plans. He really sounds like he's bought into being part of the left-wing vanity project. I think some on here will be mortified...

Edit: Not sure if I'm getting downvoted by right wingers offended by the owners writing in the guardian, or sensible folk who didn't realise the comment was tongue in cheek...

I'd be intrigued to know what target he has been set for this season and then beyond that (absolutely no way 1878 won't have had those conversations).

I still think we've got a squad that's better than our current position but the soft belly of it is really the concern. I don't think it's a secret that the target this season was to improve on the previous, which in real terms meant having a proper shot at the top 7.  The league is so tight (could probably say poor on quality too) that a good month of results and you're flying up the table.  Question will be initially how much of a tune can Artell get out of this squad, including tightening up the leaky defence but also how much can he wheel and deal in the window to boost the areas that need attention.

I agree that at this moment in time, especially having failed to beat from two of the three sides below us (also failing to beat the third side 7 weeks ago), that staying out the top two is immediate success.  But I'm not sure that the internal target will be that low.

Guess we'll see.

I think that he is the right fit for this club.

After 2,000 posts about who might be the next manager.  There may now be 2,000 posts about the new manager and the future.

(In other news, we sadly lost a great manager in Terry Venables and even Man United scored a great goal).

Looks a very good appointment but I thought the same when Newell and Holloway were appointed but having read a couple of his articles and watched his participation in the Wrexham podcast, page 5 of this thread, he comes over as a man who knows what style of football he wants his team to play but this style is achievable playing different systems and formations.

Having read his article, someone published on the Fishy last week, it was pretty evident that his and our board’s philosophy aligned and thus he appears to be the most suitable and sensible appointment the club could have made.

Always interesting when a new Manager comes in how he views certain players and whether that aligns with our particular preferences but the big hope is that whichever eleven turn out we continue with the recent attacking intent and individual players perform at an improved level consistently rather than spasmodically.

As always when a new broom is introduced exciting times and be interesting to see what effect this may have on the attendance for the mid December fixture v Crewe in a couple of weeks time.

Let's hope they all put in a performance tomorrow. He's straight up and says we've been too easy to play against for too long especially at home and I don't think he'll be one to have any passengers so those found not wanting will quickly find themselves out the side.

Yeah, intriguing. He knows we’ve conceded too many goals. Plenty of time to go and window to come. Plenty to play for. 4 points off Harrogate in 15th - relative comfort. 8 off Morecambe in 12th and 10 off the play offs. Can’t see us getting anything at MK, so sets up a juicy home game with Crewe who score and concede plenty. Priority is our defending though. We won’t make any inroads if we don’t address that. We’ve got goals in us but we’re cr*p on the turnover, when our midfield and defence have looked way too flimsy and off the pace.

I really like the bit about it being an easy place to come. He said when you come all the people are nice - maybe from that we can learn to stop clapping the away fans attendance figure being read out and can boo and whistle it as it should be.

Welcome on board Dave.
Dave, Shaun & Ben it will need a lot of luck and hard work to turn the ship around but I'm sure you will do it UTM

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I think that was very astute of him, I think it could be a very interesting journey for a few of our players.

If Artell can’t get a tune out of Hunt then I’ll FINALLY admit defeat on that one

That's my stance.  I'm hoping that the likes of Hunt, Eisa, possibly Ainley, Vernam when he comes back plus a couple of others are the type who really flourish under a manager who will encourage and indulge those attack minded players.

Of course the priority is defence but hopefully he's of the mindset that you can address more than one issue at once.

Ainley has played more for Artell than any other manager so you would hope so. I'm sure he's going to shake things up pretty quickly.

I really like the bit about it being an easy place to come. He said when you come all the people are nice - maybe from that we can learn to stop clapping the away fans attendance figure being read out and can boo and whistle it as it should be.

I thought the general rule was under 100 you clap, between 100 and 500ish you ignore it and over 500 you boo?

He called our football meh . I love him already

Yep, I was delighted that that was his opening gambit as that's exactly what it's been for most of the season. It's like we started the season with these grand plans for possession based football but then as we realised that our midfield were not techncially adept enough so we tried to back peddle to the safety and security of keeping us shape but we somehow got stuck between the two doing neither particularly effecitvely.

I think he gave 2 fantastic interviews, the future looks rosy in the fact that he wants us to be a league 1 club and not just another L2 club; along with everything else he said. Not playing to the fans but a lot of truthful comments.

Just watched the interview again and sat thinking two things.

1. The second viewing was even more impressive than the first and
2. He looks a bit like Harry Wainman

We now have 2 no nonsense ex defenders in charge, so hopefully more clean sheets in the offing.

Also, will he go more attacking to get out of trouble, with the likes of Hunt and Ainley, or try to tighten us up and grind our way out of the bottom before trying the more expansive stuff?

Going to be interesting to watch over the coming weeks.

Great appointment credit to Andrew and Jason for getting the man they really wanted.. really like the fact he has had opportunities to take other jobs which are closer to home but this one has sparked his interest, really think he's gonna be up for the challenge.. we are a big club at this level let's start proving it and make BP a hard place to visit again..

Well, if they are they’ll be rightfully called daft. They’ve got the right jobs for them.

I wouldn't get too excited about Tuesday.
It will take time for him to get the team playing the way he wants to play, and tomorrow will be pretty much a Shaun & Ben team IMO.

Indeed. Biggest comment i took from it. Because lets face it, it is excrement

Can’t argue with that, but it’s odd in as much as, until this season, Hurst’s Town teams have always had an “identity”. That identify was more attitudinal and ethos-based than playing style; be fitter than the opposition, work harder than the opposition, defend from the front, track back, be defensively organised, be together as a group, be mentally resilient, and so on.

The playing style would generally be vanilla if anything, but the more successful Hurst sides would usually be brought to life not through system but by a single “joker” in a forward position, who was a genuine standout in the division at their specific attacking quality. Think Amond the goalscorer in 15/16, Bogle the unstoppable number 9 in the first half of 16/17, McAtee the talismanic wildcard in 21/22. Liam Hearn is the sort of player you could add to that list, but he was never properly fit at the same time we had a team capable of having a proper tilt at promotion.

On reflection, it seems to me that Hurst was never particularly adept at implementing a particular way of playing, instead setting up to nail the basics and relying upon the talent of a few key individuals to provide threat and unpredictability. This season it appears he took his eye of the basics that had served him so well, and focused on getting us to play in a particular way, ultimately falling sadly short on both fronts.

Artell seems to have strong ideas on playing style and a reasonable record of translating those ideas into practice, and so my hope is that he can indeed coach a workable system and playing identity into a squad that I hope transpires was simply mismanaged earlier in the season (as opposed to being just another set of talentless wage thieves to have adorned the black and white in recent years). I don’t think this squad is anywhere near as bad as our results and league position suggests, but now it’s on Artell to prove that.

Really pleased with this appointment.
As mentioned the honesty/directness of his answers in the interviews is quite refreshing.

Nice to see almost total positivity on here to for a change.

Ben could have a job for life doing what he enjoys, whereas 8 out of 10 managers will eventually get sacked along with the assistant manager.

If I was going to be pedantic (I usually am), the same could be said for our previous management team! The fact that our defence has been all over the place this season especially is the biggest surprise for me. I can only imagine that the players they got weren't what they thought or we failed to sign two or three players who they thought would be able to combine to change the style of play entirely.

A tough run of games coming up so I hope Artell can impose something more effective on the team pretty quickly.

Not enough being scored, too many conceded - younger players will get a game if good enough, and will want to work closely with Neil Woods over the next 12 months.

Quick honest assessment added to a Meh to avoid slating recent poor performances.

If you can't trap a ball, can't make an accurate pass and run to accept passes faster than we have been, don't worry if your tracksuit zip snags, as you won't need to take it off !

I can see Ainley and Khouri getting game time once fully fit and Hunt getting a run (more minutes) for better free kicks and corners.

If he can also help Holohan and Clifton back into better form, things could improve quickly.

Also think about both Amos and Glennon being shown how not to jump early into tackles, and Efete how to accurately cross at the first chance instead of slowing and cutting back, then perhaps we have a start for better flank play on both sides.

When will Vernam be back training again after his injury? Another needed option !

Artell speaks incredibly well, yet the most impressive part of his interview was describing us as "meh."

I think this is a really good appointment, and I think he will bring some innovative approaches from his time spent seeing how they approach things in other sports.

There appears to have been a press conference, but it doesn’t seem to be available on club or BBC channels currently.

Just seen his interview on Look North, said that he’d been in contact with Hurst, who told him that the club is run by good people. So Hursty told him to go for it!!

Have to be honest he wasn't my first choice from what little I knew of the candidates but he has spoken well so far and has a league 2 promotion on his CV which proves he's capable of doing it at EFL level. Pleased with the talk of needing a playing identity. Seems like JS, AP and DC have helped swing it in our favour against Morecambe which when you consider the league positions is genuinely no mean feat.

Overall satisfying appointment, well done the board and let's all get behind him straight away, as I'm sure everybody will. Let's hope the honeymoon period lasts a good while.

Not sure you're the first to be honest and I'm not sure why everyone is hanging their coat on this.  It seems to be a theory somebody came up with and now many people believe there's something in it.

I'd love to see analysis done on other clubs management & coaching staff to see if there's any substance in it.

Given we have many ex defenders as coaches yet are leaking goals I'm not sure there's any credence in it.

Maybe we need the "striker"coach to educate the defenders on the tricks of the trade they will face to help them tighten up 😉

All joking aside, you need a partnership...sometimes the sum total is greater than the individual parts if you get the right one, vice versa if you dont. Maher and Rogers have good individual abilities, maybe the best two...but are they the best partnership ?

Welcome to Blundell Park, Mr Artell. I hope you will be remembered as one of the greats. Big job ahead before then.
Looking for the new manager bounce, so I put 20 quid on Grimsby against MK Dons.

Up the Mariners!

Interesting to see that he is Head Coach and not Manager.

That normally means the he will take on all the coaching, but may mean that others may take on the other jobs that would normally covered by a Manager.

Who knows, 1878 may still be looking to do the Director of Football route at some point, who can do all the transfer dealings

I thought it was more to do with Paul Hurst being a manager

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Lawrie McMenemy never played in the football league, he only played for Gateshead.

He won promotion with Donny, then won the 4th. div title with Town. He left us for Southampton where he won their only major trophy, the FA cup, before managing England.

By contrast, the worst manager I have seen at Bludell Park was Mike Lyons, who played all his career in the top flight with Everton, then promoted to the 1st. Div with Sheff. Wed.

Last time I saw David Artel was at a pre - season friendly playing for Morecambe against Carlisle.
He came on as a sub. and was quite a robust stopper and dangerous at the other end in set pieces.
Has done very well to get to manager level.
Pleased that Towns deputy management team have been recognised for their efforts.
Just slightly concerned that the bias for coaching the team appears to be with central defenders and I think a ‘bright spark’ attacking coach needs to be appointed to get the right blend.

Which might be relevant if we'd brought him in to play centre back.

In his one job as a manager, he got Crewe promoted with a small budget, so I think he's ahead on points at the moment.

I’m not sure it quite works like that. A manager’s philosophy isn’t necessarily linked to the position they played. Nonetheless, what’s clear from our goals against and failure to keep a clean sheet recently is that defensively we need a sort out.

David looks and sounds like the real deal to me, and has enough in his CV to let me think this isn't the usual explosion
of doomed hopes that a new manager encourages.

As a matter of fact, shortly after reading about his appointment, 5 hours of explosions started here in Chiang Mai.
Well they love their fireworks in South-East Asia and it was the Loy Krathong festival on the 27th.
Suited my mood perfectly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loy_Krathong

So I'm chuffed we've got David (we're on first-name terms already!), delighted Shaun has been made Assistant, pleased for
the club and especially the owners who got the deal done, and apologies to forza ivano for doubting his gambling wisdom.

Of course it would be silly to get carried away already, but I intend to refer to David as the 'ExtraSpecialOne' in future posts.
Just letting y'all know.

David  turned down several clubs before saying yes to us.

He said he had being looking for a Jason, Andrew and Debbie for a while.

Well we had been looking for them for nigh on 20 years before they took over.

I feel we are going on for a few decent years and things are only going to get better.

We are.going to need more seats at the park when another few thousand see we are playing good attacking football.,with a manager that does not big the opposition up.

Let them worry what we can do

Seems from his interview, and his article in coaches voice about looking for a job where he won't be expected to do everything like he was at Crewe, that he will be a bit more of a head coach and less of an old fashioned manager perhaps?

Perhaps the recruitment guy will have more influence than was allowed by Hurst, at least half hursts signings seemed to be of players he was already chasing or ones he'd had before.

Artell did mention the importance of an assistant manager and the particular skill set he was looking for in one in his article and I do wonder if the imposition of Pearson was a hiccup. His interview wasn't full of enthusiasm for his assistants in my opinion, although I'm pleased they've been kept on and I think they did well to steady the ship after Hurst left. It was very noticeable how instantly they improved in game management with substitutions even as rookie managers, showing how very poor Hurst is in that arena.

One thing I found interesting, however I could have just misinterpreted it, was that he said something to the effect of having been looking for a Jason and an Andrew "and a Debbie in particular".

I did think the same to begin with as it was said a bit awkwardly but I think he meant the three as a collective rather than Debbie specifically. Almost as awkward as the Conteh handshake in the video.

It might have been deliberate.  Debbie does all the day to day running at the club and takes away a lot of workload that otherwise would potentially fall on the manager to sort.

We've heard he was doing nearly everything at Crewe so just being able to concentrate on on field matters might be what he really craves.

IMO David Artell is a great appointment - he's managed at this level and had a promotion to the league above. It's up to the squad now to impress him and show their worth. DA has no allegiance to any of the players and he will judge them purely on merit, ability and effort.
As for the reference to his title " Head Coach" , too many posters are misreading this. The old fashioned "Manager" is a dieing breed and increasingly more so. A Head Coach ( an expression that is used in  football all around the world) concentrates purely on the squad, the team , tactics ,  player acquisitions and training/coaching regimes. He shouldn't be bogged down with tedious admin and all the other clerical stuff - there are other people employed to do that. David actually referred to all these other duties when he was at Crewe and stated that it wore him down ( or words to that effect). This employment of a Head Coach is another example of how Jason, Andrew and Debbie are getting the club into the 21st Century .

I like the fit and I'm quite excited he seemed to do a great job in the first few years there and then had a terrible season in league 1 by the sounds of it with a club who were maybe out of their depth , not that it fully excuses him from 1 win in 16 .

Sounds a fiery character who wants to play exciting attacking football - I just hope we have the players / can attract one's that can implement this style of play ; are they technically good enough ?

I really hope we can get Conteh,Hunt and Khouri into the midfield as they are 3 that have the undoubted ability if used correctly/have the confidence .

There are quite a few who may well be cut loose as I can't see their games matching up (it sounds like he wants total football , and at Crewe it was Man City style by the sound of it ) so January could get interesting .

Think he was the best we would get (on paper at least) so well done to the board for getting it done , and hopefully it takes this bizarre pressure off of them somewhat .

I will go to MK tonight with more hope than after Saturday , even if it may well be too early for any noticeable difference .

Hopefully the park will be packed for the Crewe game to give Artell a warm welcome.

According to some Crewe fans, a lot of the players left for something better.  Robbed of the spine of his team, he didn't have the resources to keep them up.  Still, it's always good strategy to berate somebody before anything happens so that you can smugly say, "I told you so".

Absolutely.

I didn't/daren't venture out. The air pollution numbers were similar to our "smoky season" which nearly killed me this year (copd).

I'll be going for a 3-month 'holiday' somewhere else in Thailand before the next crop-burning bonanza starts in January.

If you listen to the emergency DN35 pod from last night, the lad from Crewe gives a very balanced answer as to what happened in that season.

Nobody was hiding it though were they? He's got a blot on his copybook but that's hardly surprising given the position we're in. No manager who has had only success in the FL would come to a side sat where we are. I don't know the circumstances for that season but it sounds like some of it was his own doing with poor recruitment and some of it was losing most of his good players without proper funds to replace them sufficiently. He'll have hopefully learned from it.

But just as much as you shouldn't ignore negatives, you can't ignore positives either just because the new regime have made what seems on paper to be a good appointment and you don't like it because you're still depressingly attached to JF. He's had a promotion from this division with a team that isn't particularly well funded or a particularly big club for this level either. They were also fairly easy on the eye and generally played on the front foot whenever I saw them. Both of those things are big plusses and we'll see if he can replicate that here. His first job will be to get us safe.

Apologies if this has been posted earlier, but below is a link to last night’s hour-long Town special on Humberside Sportstalk. It includes snippets of interviews with Artell, Stockwood, Kristine Green (who comes across brilliantly), and Crewe’s local BBC reporter / commentator. A good listen (if you haven’t already).

It's moot now because we've appointed him but I'm not so sure about your assertion. Whenever you see a manager's job being discussed at our level there always seems to be a lot of applicants, there are several managers working below the standard you would reasonably expect them to be and there isn't a manager alive outside the top of the EPL that hasn't had the sack or a relegation.

You then have the clubs who everyone knows are basket cases (hello Bradford) but they still find candidates. So a club like ours being carefully run by people who are not Poundland psychopaths must be an attraction.

Not much has been made of Artell turning down the assistant role at Standard Liege to join us but I personally think he is insane to do that! Standard Liege are currently 3rd in the Belgian league. He obviously has his reasons and their loss is our gain.

Following the information Jason gave us that they had been considering the position of Hurst for 6 weeks, I expected them to have identified some realistic alternatives. Yesterday, it was confirmed that Artell was one of those that they identified before deciding to make a change.

The club, quite rightly in my opinion, wanted to test the market and see who out there was interested. We don't know who applied, but Artell did. Confirmation there that Artell was someone the board wanted, and this job was one that Artell was interested in.

Then the board went about numerous interviews and it seems the 2 parties had been sizing each other up and doing their due diligence on one another for a couple of weeks. No complaints with that from me. I also really like that a lot of this was done out of town to keep things under wraps.

And finally, the legal side took a week.

I admit to getting a bit impatient but I'm really happy with the process that the club followed.

Interesting to know that he is one of those managers who likes to sit in the stand for the first half, I guess to get a clear view of how the opposition are lined up and how both teams are playing.

Is that something he usually does, or is it just with being brand new at the club to get a better view of all the players in his first game?

I sit in the Upper Young's , close to the half-way line, and you get a totally different perspective of the game as opposed to pitch level. I've thought for a long time that if you had a senior member of the coaching staff ie the assistant manager, on the camera gantry with direct communication to the bench then adjustments to playing style/weaknesses could be corrected immediately.

It's what he usually does as he said to Matt Dean in this interview around the 46:38 minute mark.

If you are stating facts, surely you cannot just cherry pick the ones that suit your argument?

He also presided over taking them back down in what was one of their worst ever seasons.

He certainly talks the talk , lets hope he can back it up

Fair enough.

Got Crewe promoted on a small budget, then top half of league 1 with the same restrictions. Think he said he had a budget of 1.4 million and for reference Ipswich had one of 8 million. He outperformed some teams with a much bigger budget, but inevitably, bigger clubs came along and took his best players.

Now he may have been extremely lucky and inherited a particularly talented bunch of players originally that made his job easier, but a good number of them came through the academy that he had been in charge of before becoming manager

No manager is guaranteed to bring success, and he may well fail, which would perhaps please you and a few others, but only time will tell.

The club's analyst films from the gantry and is in contact with the bench during the game as well as going down to the dressing room at halftime.

This is common practice in the NFL - they have a team of analysts watching the game from above and pumping information to the coaching team on the field. A lot of top level football clubs are doing it as well, you often see someone on the bench with headphones and a lot of managers now have iPads in front of them during the game.

I have often thought that watching a game at pitchside was virtually the worst view you could get, as a spectator I'd rather be higher up to see the game as a whole.

I knew that they did it in the NFL but didn't want to bring " grid iron" into the discussion for the possible backlash from those that don't watch or like it.😉

I'll be ready to watch tonight to see what immediate changes, if sny, he makes after watching 1 day of training.

In a training clip seen yesterday, it was interesting to see his promotion of trapping with one foot, then quickly offloading straight away with the other foot. It sounded like he wasn't happy with a couple of the attempts.

Other teams have appeared to control the ball faster than us, with nuch mire accurate passing. A simple task that should be natural to any professional player.

Passes, running, ball control, better set pieces - all things that can be improved in training sessions.

It would be good to see every player selected tonight at least showing that they want to seal their place, giving 100% and displaying desire for a win to the wonderful travelling fans !

You're right. My ST is usually Upper Smiths, and I had to one year go to Lower Smiths first row. You couldn't see the feet of the players on the far side, and passing was only ok front to  back, angle or side passing you just lost all perspective.
I notice that Man U "dug out" must be at mid-Main stand height. It has to be better.

If you listen to the emergency DN35 pod from last night, the lad from Crewe gives a very balanced answer as to what happened in that season.

Unfortunately no fan gives a ' balanced ' view of what happens as none of them have a real clue as to what actually happened. Only David Artell and the staff at the club will know what happened, the other bits is just guess work. The chairman of Crewe gave David a very good reference and the journalist from BBC Radio Stoke on Sportstalk said we're very lucky to have him so I think that gives you an slight insight into what sort of job he's done.

Its nice everyone wants to think something new has been invented here.

It is a standard appointment after wallowing around for weeks trying to make other things work. First Hursty to get us back on track, then the lads.

If this was the first choose as Stockwood stated!!! No revolution there then. Is Shaun going to be replaced?? Great reward for him and believe he will one day get another chance.

Pleased with the appointment but i for one, am not getting carried away…. Onwards and upwards

You needn't worry, I won't be bringing it again. Watching you and that squirrel in full flow from a grandstand, helicopter viewpoint was enough to put anyone off their crunchy nut cornflakes for life. It's ruined my usual walk through Weelsby Woods.

He will have access to all the match recordings from BP and quite likely the away games as well. If he watches those then that should give him a good idea of where our and the players strengths and weaknesses are.

Absolutely.

I didn't/daren't venture out. The air pollution numbers were similar to our "smoky season" which nearly killed me this year (copd).

I'll be going for a 3-month 'holiday' somewhere else in Thailand before the next crop-burning bonanza starts in January.

It's a shame.  Could be so nice. I went last Chrimbo and it was awful

I had a mate in the Ponny against Sutton.  He thought my appraisal of Town being shocking against Sutton was harsh.   I watch Mariner's TV and probably get a bigger picture perspective.

I sit in the middle of the Upper Findus and I can confirm it looked pretty shocking at times from up there as well!

I've only been in the Ponny a few times over the decades and never had a great idea what was going on during much of the game.
