Like this post if you are happy with Jolley’s appointment, cross if you aren’t. Whilst there seems to have been a positive reaction it would be interesting to see if that’s representative of the board as a whole. Personally, I think it’s a sensible appointment.

Why not do a POLL ?

Management is a results business, for the sake of the club I want him to succeed as I would any manager, what I have seen of him so far seems he will take us in the right direction so I am a solid 5/7 pleased with his appointment.

Yes.

But what do I Know? I thought Newell was a good appointment, and I though Slade would do well second time around.

And all the time we have been blaming John Fenty.

I'm optimistic but pretty cautious. He's got great coaching credentials but virtually no management experience. It's exciting as it's a very different type of appointment but it is a real step into the unknown.

If we manage to stay up then I think we could be in for interesting times led by someone with no previous connection with the club and no baggage. A fresh start and a clean slate. MJ is clearly an astute person and has ambition. He is smarter than most people we have had associated with the club for a long time. For everyone's sake I really hope the fans and the board supprt him and that he brings success.

Can't say I am dancing a jig like some, I had never heard of the guy before a few days ago.

Seems a refreshing choice as opposed to those on the managerial merry go round and we can all hope that he is the one that will turn this club around but considering the crap that Slade left us with I still worry for our EFL status.

Virtually no one had heard of Arsene Wenger when he came to Arsenal

Just saying....

Delighted at this appt - it's a gamble but isn't every appt?

Cowleys at Lincoln - turned out brilliantly for them but could easily have gone belly up

I'm just pleased it's not Sol Campbell - never was going to be IMO - and/or one off the merry go round

This guy is 40, ambitious, has great coaching skills, and is obviously keen to put his mark on the game in England

Reading about his philosophy he favours a 4 3 3 high pressing game, high tempo and an 'exciting' brand of footy

On that basis we will have a few surprises next Saturday in the starting XI

Although he will have is work cut out with this squad

Happy to not be included in post of the week! Thought it was easier to do it like this than set up a poll on my phone. Interesting so far that nearly one in four are unhappy with the appointment.

Of course there are no guarantees in football. I seem to recall Bignot's appointment was generally liked. Slade's wasn't met with universal disdain.

Jolley is an interesting character. Not your 'normal' manager. No playing career of note (Barnsley Youth was as good as it got). Then was out of the game altogether for a decade. Has been coaching for a while now. Has a reputation I guess as a 'thinker' and tactician. I think it's a bold move by Town. A departure from the tired old merry go round of failed managers we (and most clubs) usually do. And maybe that is no bad thing.

Time will tell. My only concern is that he doesnt have a lot of managerial experience. A couple of years coaching Burnley U23's and a short (but relatively successful spell) in Sweden's top division. My point being he has no track record of sustained success in the professional game.

He is clearly intelligent and has ideas. If he can get his ideas across to our players it could be an inspired choice. His first job will be to pick up a group of players clearly lacking confidence. He has initially has 11 games to pick up the required 10-14 points to survive. Thats the priority so he will have to act quickly.

Its a time for us all to rally behind him.

I'm happy with his appointment but still I've red crossed your post because you've ignored the integrated poll function in a blatantly transparent attempt to hoover up approval points.

They finished bottom and were relegated! If that's 'relatively successful' I hope to intercourse he isn't unsuccessful at Town.

Yes they got relegated but they were dead and buried before Jolley got there. i used the phrase 'relatively' as they did improve under him. His points per game over a full season would have  kept them up and he gained a couple of notable wins including the eventual champions.

Look I am not saying he is the messiah and as I said in my previous post he lacks experience and the CV isnt extensive to say the least. A couple of good results In Sweden does not prove much.  It's a gamble. But our immediate future lies with him.

Thats worrying then, he had more games to play with than he has at Town, 15 points from 16 games I believe , will that rate keep us up? Worrying

I just wanted it to be decided as I was heartily sick of all the shite and guessing games going on here. The decision has been made now so that irritation has gone but sadly I think the wrong choice has been made yet again.
Jolley has been appointed to manage GTFC in the National League, after all the talk of someone with relegation battle experience coming in to save our season, Fenty given up and has gone for someone to start over. Not a bad idea, we have been banging on for a plan for the future for ages but a bit defeatist IMO.

He has been appointed by a bloke who doesn't have the best of records appointing managers. He been down the young hungry crazy bloke and had the sack more times than Santa route. Now he's going with the intelligent graduate so it I'll be a wait and see.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

What bullshit would that be? As far as I know ( and nothing to the contrary has been announced ) the new stadium is still on the cards. Although nothing has been announced of late it doesn't mean things aren't progressing in the background.

Despite everything that has gone on this season Mike Jolley as taken on a club totally in the shat both on and off the field.

Without a doubt, the board did not want to get rid of Slade so bringing Jolley in was never planned for.

The very least we can do is give the man a loud warm Grimsby welcome.

Never understand the appeal of a 'young hungry' manager or whatever it is you want to call it.

Yes, everyone has to start somewhere, but he has NO experience of English professional football.

Another cheap appointment from Fenty. It's a risk, one that could pay off of course, but not one worth taking in my view.

He's done well then to acquire a UEFA Pro Licence and coach at 4 league clubs with 'no experience of English football'. Good research though.

Who would you have appointed?

He's done well then to acquire a UEFA Pro Licence and coach at 4 league clubs with 'no experience of English football'. Good research though.

Who would you have appointed?

Someone with loads of experience obviously, someone like Russel Slade? 🤔

They have already said it's an undisclosed rolling contract, so yeah, 6 months then.

He's over a decade working his way up through the ranks on merit alone. How many of today's managers would have got their jobs had they not been good at kicking a ball? There's a traditional of choosing former players as managers, but there's no great reason to do so if my opinion.

In common with most (if not all) GTFC fans, I don't know anything about him or his background but he must have the necessary coaching qualifications or he wouldn't have been offered the job.

I, for one, welcome him to the club and wish him every success, let's give the man our support and full backing.

The simple truth is we need a coach who can turn quite a few sow's ears into silk purses or else we're doomed to relegation. He can only work with the mess left by Slade and I wait to see if he can improve these players individually and collectively to get the necessary points to keep us up. If he can do that, then he'll have proved himself to be quite a coach and well worthy of the manager's job.

Let's get behind him and give him a chance before writing him off.

Not taken in by this appointment
MJ seems all too polished
Seen those who “talk a good un” before
This is not the time for an experimental manager
I fear this is such a bad decision at the wrong time
We will be in bottom two if all teams win their games in hand
And we are experimenting?

We supposedly asked McCann and Brown only to get turned down by both. Who else was realistically available who is actually proven to be any good? It's all well and good saying we need an experienced manager but I'd rather take a chance on someone than go with someone who's proved themselves to be crap.

You make a fair point, but every manager is a gamble.

We will just have to trust that his hunger and apparent tactical awareness can rejuvenate the squad. Only time will tell if it was the correct appointment, but an important consideration at this difficult time is that the majority of fans seem happy which at least ensures the crowd will get behind him. He certainly needs all the help he can get because he has had some balls to take it on.

Having thought about it for a few days and watched the Matt Dean interview, the answer is yes. I don't necessarily think it will be instant success (i.e. we might still get relegated) but I feel I've got the energy back to give it a go and be patient again.

Still need an overhaul in the boardroom mind.

I can`t say I am over the moon but from the list chucked about nobody stood out for me other than possibly Askey who I really wanted so he is no better or worse than the other candidates. The guys a new broom hopefully he can do something different and get enough points to survive then he can rebuild and shape his own team. This is a massive job but providing we retain league status he can have a free reign to build us back up in his image. The fans will back him.

I like the fact that he seems like something of a left-field appointment, I like that he seems to be genuinely enthusiastic and apprehensive of the challenge ahead, and I like that he's clearly got other smarts beyond purely football. I'm sure being good with numbers can't hurt in terms of helping to keep the books balanced in terms of managing a squad.

I don't know that he will have the experience or know-how to save us from relegation this season (though it goes without saying that I want us to stay up, desperately!) but I think given time he could do good things with the club. We just need to stay behind him even if early results aren't going our way.

He said in the press conference yesterday that he wants to play "fast, attacking football" - I think those who have been rightly critical of Slades tactics over his term will welcome those kinds of comments.

To be honest I would rather have had a raggy arsed Shankly Ferguson type,  rather than a Winterbottom.
But as long as he gets the respect of the senior players, (they have been known to have history in this,) hopefully he will stamp his authority  early and have some success, and luck hopefully

And Sean Dyche who I saw on TV last night extolling his virtues? The club say they spoke to a lot of people about him, and got the same answer from them all which is fair enough. Even our board would not make the same mistake they did with Newell and Bignot... would they?

Well they made the same mistake with Bignot that they made with Newell, they were keen to point out that they had carried out "due diligence" as they obviously didn't with Bignot.

I have no doubt Dyche thought highly of Jolley and would have said how good he was at managing U23s. He probably also told Fenty, if asked, that he would make a good manager one day.

But did Fenty ask if he would be any good at managing a motley crowd of disinterested no hopers who can't hit a cows bottom with a banjo striker-wise in a desperate limited games relegation battle at a run down dump of a stadium with a wooden main stand and a board who know nowt about football whose financial man tells folk to shut up when the questions get difficult and a non-chairman who is owed £2M and doesn't want to spend any more on players.

If Dyche said Jolley would urine, it then great!

Good one. 'The plastics'? So you're having a shot at Jolley and the supporters too? Does that make you a 'plastic' then as it sounds like you've already written him off and he hasn't managed a game yet!

You would have preferred someone 'experienced' - plenty of fans felt that was important - but you can't name anyone. We did obviously consider and approach some experienced people but it didn't work out for whatever reason.
You're gonna have to do better than this mate, or the plastics will turn on you

I had the advantage of being at the Carlisle away game and having no interruption in my viewing, whereas Michael probably would not be able to have this luxury in the company of the directors.

I fear he may not get team selection right on his first game (as he probably only saw snippets of the game), but I can identify with him - particularly as I never played professional football as well.

From the evidence of last Saturday (with ex professionals in charge), I'm pleased with Michael Jolley's appointment. Just hope he can scatter his 'sparkle dust' over the squad and get it to win a few of the next 10 games.

By the look of things Jolley will be one for doing his homework. He will be thorough in his preparation and will clearly articulate his game plan with each player.
Key to success over the coming weeks will be his ability to win over the players. It seems Bignot failed miserably at this and ultimately cost him his job. The players must buy into his vision. I recently heard an interview with a premiership player who said how difficult it can be for managers with no professional playing experience to earn the respect of his players. I honestly believe with his intelligence, humility and modesty, combined with a fair but firm management style, Jolley can do this.
