Some reserve side that. A few full internationals including an £80m English, European and World club champion in the starting XI. It was like looking at a pre-2017 Sincil Bank.

Since when did it become a problem to take the urine out of Lincoln when they get hammered just because "we wouldn't have done any better"?
I doubt they would be so generous so why not enjoy these moments while we can!

We've spent the last 15 years watching first Scunthorpe and now Lincoln leave us in the dust and the only joy we get is watching their demise. Not that losing to Liverpool is the demise of Lincoln, merely a reality check in the gulf between the leagues nowadays. They have pushed on in a way that once again leaves us in the dust after they got back into the league.

That FA Cup run was the making of them financially. A good cup run has been some years gone by for us.

George Formby had a well known song called "When I'm cleaning windows" and as we all know Lincoln fans are toe eyed window lickers. There's at least 6 of them on here.

Well said Ginny, keeping clean sheets to good 3rd tier sides in Oxford & Charlton (who The Imps haven't played for 60 years) is no mean feet considering Appleton has only had 2 transfer windows. He has got rid of all but 2 of the players Danny Cowley brought in and had success with .... all with 40% of the budget too I might add.

Probably quite fortunate since the last 2 sets of accounts saw over £3m in losses with selling out your ground every week. I imagine the last season was even bigger losses since it was cut short.

The £1m compensation from Huddersfield definitely helped as their spending was unsustainable, hence the new model under Appleton lowering the age of the squad and thus wages as a result. Sales for the likes of Toffolo also helped, plus vitally 4.5k of early ST sales for this 2020/21 season. The CEO also mentioned a upper end 6 figure £'s investment from the Board last week, following the announcement of no fans before March, to help tide things over.

I would say much as it pains me that Lincolns recebt success is fully deserved, recruted well on and off the pitch, kept the feel good factor among the fans when it mattered after a promotion and wembley victory and have reaped the rewards with increased support, in fact they have done everything we should have but have failed to do on so many occasions down the years.

Lincoln deserve it????
How?
Never rated the Cowley's and Appleton is clueless. They will be back down in league two next season.
Never liked Lincoln and their fans since they got into the Donny road end and kicked off back in the playoffs years ago. Bloody carnage.

They did what we didn't by spending so much money that they lost about £3.5 million in their first two years after getting promoted. I'm sure last years was even bigger. You can complain about them doing more than us all you want, but we don't have somebody willing to throw money at us and never have had. So lets cut the pretense that Lincoln have done it all by being well run, they've done it by throwing money at the problem.

After taking advice from Squeaky on how to avoid relegation they probably thought doing the opposite would actually reap rewards.

They also had/have a chairman that wants to work with others and others want to work with him this alongside getting back into the EFL some good cup draws and runs they’ve had the income to do the next bit. The “next bit” being a strategy and plan to grow their club on and off the pitch. Rather than p1ssing away time and money on pipe dreams and potential sales. This isn’t a dig at JF by the way as much as a statement of fact the alarming thing is other than Holloway coming in and sprinkling some magic dust I still don’t believe we have a credible plan to move us forward. When I use the term moving forward I don’t expect us to destroy everyone in the league and join the Gimps at their self proclaimed elite level all I’d like to see is us competitive on the pitch and glass half full off it.

Money has been spent, but it has also been coming in that has been deserved/earned. Some of this has been spent on the new training ground, some on the academy, and on things like backroom staff for assessing players further afield for recruitment. We as a club don’t simply just throw money at things like Salford, Fleetwood or Mansfield. The chairman and the board work tirelessly hard to a plan within the clubs means and the link between them and the fans and community in general have never been stronger. The chairman and CEO answer questions on our forums and the transparency keeps everyone on board with all that is happening. The cup runs, ST sales, player recruitment in and out along with sensible budgeting allow us to try and establish the goal first and foremost of being a league one club. So to answer the above post, yes plenty of money has been spent, but it is because we are a very well run club.

I don't call losing £3.5M in 2 seasons a well run club. It's not money deserved or earnt, it's money that a backer is putting into the club. Fair play that you've found backers that are willing to help, but a bit of bad luck and it would be much bigger losses, backers might get bored and you end up in real trouble. Fortunately for you, it's gone well so far, but there are far more examples of clubs gambling and getting it wrong than success stories.

Ha! Ha! If we won the Champions League and signed a front 3 of Messi, Haaland and Aguero the general populace of Grimsby and Cleethorpes wouldn't be 'glass half full'!!! It's in our genetic makeup to be pessimistic. "Messi's too old, Haaland's too young (and his dad played for Leeds) and Aguero's not good in the air...we need new strikers"

Their recent losses don't really mean anything. They made a killing off their 2016/17 success and have used it, in combination with an uptick in investment, to build a new training ground and a successful team.
It's how you're supposed to run a football club, isn't it?

I've got no idea abut the comings and goings of Lincoln, other than whats being said on this thread really, but...
"They've made a loss of xyz" - Speculate to accumulate? Sure they won't give a excrement about the loss in a few years if they're playing in the Championship and/or making millions by selling on players enabled by their investment in the youth/training ground etc.

"It could have gone horribly wrong" Sure they've taken a risk, but it hasn't gone wrong...in fact it seems to be going very right for them.
Lewis Montsma, Sean Roughan (17) and George Grant are 3 such players that are worth £1m+ already in my opinion, that’s taking into account the current financial climate.

People can say Lincoln have overspent, they can say they’ve had luck, they can say they’ve a ground made up of 50% of fans who couldn’t have cared less about them 5 years ago but the simple fact is, they’re operating on levels we can only dream of.
We didn’t speculate or capitalise when we were promoted, I’m not sure we’ve ever had a strategy and the investment just isn’t there. That isn’t a dig at Fenty either because simply increasing our debt to him doesn’t actually bode well for the future.
As a club Lincoln were in a mess, arguably worse than us. Until the season after we went up Lincoln were a bottom half non league club with atrocious crowds. They gambled on young, fresh managers and it worked. They did what Inter did with Jose, Man Utd did with Fergie, albeit on a smaller level, but they trusted them, they gave them control and influence and it paid off.
Will it last? Probably not but they’ve invested in their training ground, their academy, their fan base and the squad. Many expected them to fail miserably without Cowley, I know a couple of Lincoln fans who feared the worse and are still sceptical but naturally, as a fan they’re enjoying every minute of it and I don’t blame them.
As town fans we have a harping back to the days of yesteryear in the championship, punching above our weight but right now we are at a level we deserve to be at and are there through many different reasons.
What Lincoln in this instance did was hardly groundbreaking, I mean they clearly learned from their mistakes; they haven’t asked Fenty for anymore advice since he told them how to swerve relegation.
I’m not so sure being debt free necessarily means well run, and I wouldn’t say Lincoln have thrown money at it like Salford/Fleetwood and so on but they have invested. Some of that has been from a single contributor, some from on pitch success and player sales. There is some irony from a smattering of Lincoln fans who used to jealously say Town threw money at it in the conference...if only they knew haha.
But I wish them no ill feeling, I don’t regard them as a rival and whilst I enjoyed watching us beat them, I think we could do no worse than ask them for some support and ideas.
Fair play to them.

I was gobsmacked that Cowley went to Lincoln before our play-off final. I honestly think that if we hadn't gone up in 2016, the pressure on Hurst would have been massive and I think that would have been the end of his reign at Town. I wasn't in the Hurst Out camp but I felt he would move on if we lost and the one man I wanted to replace him was Cowley. You only have to look at Braintree since he left to see what a good job he did. Lincoln have paid some good money these last couple of years but at least they have something to show for it in the form of upgraded facilities. They made £2m from that cup run in the Conference then followed it up with another decent run the next year. Rumour is that we got £750k for Bogle and what do we have to show for it?

They've had a lot of luck with cup draws that's swelled their coffers considerably.
We seem to be the opposite with cup draws, we don't seem to get the really big ones, and when we do they only charge a tenner a head.

Cup draws along with winning the Conference were the initial catalyst but they now sell 6000 season tickets and are increasing the capacity of Sinny Bank. I have lived here for over 40 years and I still can’t comprehend how they have galvanised the level of interest in fans that historically went once a year if the sun shone.
Clearly they have a very savvy Chief Executive and a board that is innovative and actively pursuing at all times other investors.
Painful living here on the footie front, especially after their start to the season, but we live in hope that something similar might happen at town!!!!

Obviously the Cowley's were the catalyst in a way not seen since Graham Taylor did back in the mid-70's, and 3 trophies in 4 years is unprecedented at lower league level. When they left for Huddersfield 12 months ago, most of us thought attendances would drop, and at present we have no way of knowing what they'll be once this Covid situation eases and fans are allowed back inside Sincil Bank. One thing I do know is that despite a 40% drop in budget, the recruitment by Appleton this summer has been staggering and the football technically is possibly the best I've ever seen in 45 years of watching The Imps.

Yeah, if only we had such luck in getting the cup draws they had....round after round after round instead of being so unlucky to go out virtually first round every time

They will probably go up again this season if it runs its full term , and will throw money at it to stay there .. meanwhile back here the club will be happy not to go down and will be happy to shop in poundland for anyone that cannot get a club . And will be happy just to tread water and stay in the league

Financially League 1 is a big step up from League 2 but it's an even bigger step up to the Championship. Do you think their owners will fund it or try yo-yo for a few years?

They have funded plan and it’s worked and no doubt will continue to move them forward. Their board talked about a ambition at the time our board just moaned that everything was against them.
We haven’t had the necessary funding to have a robust plan in fact up until recently the plan from the board has been to sell the club. Don’t even get me started on all the breath wasted over a new stadium.
Now that Holloway has turned up I’m still not sure what our plan is to be honest.
Like I said on a previous post Nates wants to work with other investors and other investors want to work with him.
Other than Holloway sticking some money in we have had no serious “B share“ investors what does that tell you about the top table or the people sat at it?

Not that difficult to achieve is that really? Have Lincoln had any success in the last 45 years with anything other than a robust, muscular, area-bombing based playing style?

Bournemouth are no bigger a club than either Town or Lincoln, and with funding they made it to the Premier League. We’ll never do it, but if Lincoln go up, they might as well give it a damned good go.

I’m certainly no Lincoln fan but the team they had in the early eighties, and youngsters they had in the reserves should have seen them join town in the then named division 2, however, unlike today their Chairman of the time, Gilbert Blades, had a now infamous meeting at the Grand Hotel were, with a couple of months of the season left and them on or near the top of the league, that they couldn’t afford promotion and they subsequently fell away. I know this to be true as one of their players, the late Dave Carr, was one of my best mates. This meeting was also discussed at Dave’s funeral by two other players from that team Wayne Turner and Derek Bell. Can’t remember all their players but the following all went on to play in our top division, David Felgate, Steve Thompson, Trevor Peake, Glen Cockerill, Gordon Shipley, Mick Harford, Tony Cunningham, Gordon Hobson. In the reserves at that time were Stuart Naylor, Gary Strodder, Phil Turner, Wayne Biggins and Dave Gilbert many of whom went on to have excellent professional careers. I used to delight at the way they cocked things up and never had any ambition as a club but times have now changed and god do I get reminded of that fact every trip to the pub or round of golf. Come on Gimps member it up again and cheer me up!!!

Absolutely spot on reply, and your facts are correct ... I remember that 82/83 season and still don’t understand how we didn’t join Town in the 2nd Tier although attendances weren’t great under Colin Murphy. I was only a teenager but couldn’t understand it (as Thatcher had hardly decimated our local Industry) especially as I believed Lincoln to be a ‘footballing City’ with a Sunday League of 10 Divisions strong. Thankfully things have finally changed although it’s taken almost 4 decades to get there, it’s typical that Covid has chosen this bleedin’ year to strike, so we’re not in SB to cheer them on 😩

Remember some of those players - 3 of whom went on to play for Town. Hobson was quality - others quite "robust".

Sorry my bad...it’s not just any old portakabin.
In all seriousness, as folk have said, Lincoln seemingly have a plan, a vision and some idea of where they want the club to go. That’s what is lacking at our own club. We’ve brought a named manager in, someone people think will revolutionise is but yet we’re still really waiting for some idea of a plan or how we move forward.
As discussed, we’ve heard nothing positive for the last 6 months, even now our owners puppet has been talking about curtailing the season. That naturally has an effect on the morale at the club and the fans.
Whilst some of us will never see Lincoln as a rival, it is annoying and frustrating to see a club not far away, who were arguably in a worse position than us literally fly past us. Good luck to them, and for the 2500 that were there during the terrible times, I hope they’re loving every minute of it.
Those folk are pragmatic enough to know it can’t/won’t last forever but they’ll flipping enjoy it and rightly so.
They’ve invested on and off the pitch, invested in the fan base, marketed the club well and found ways to draw people in, and keep them coming back.
GTFC aren’t the only club that have failed to do those things, but if we look at our own club, we’ve seen shoots of some innovative ideas and dipped a toe in the progressive pool but then we’ve quickly reverted to type. Really sad actually because with those ideas and forethought GTFC could have all those things.
Good luck to them and enjoy it while it lasts.

We do have a plan. Bringing in a manager who has had success at a higher level. A manger who has put in a dollop of cash and has taken a seat on the board, who wants to be a part of all aspects of the club, has moved to the area and is clearly enthusiastic about bringing in young talent and developing them for the benefit of the club on the pitch, and hopefully future sales, which will give us more financial clout.
We were starting to look a lot better when the pandemic hit, playing good attacking football. It does seem that we have regressed more than others during the lockdown and it remains to be seen how long it takes us to get back up to speed, but I think there is a plan there.
I think we as fans are sceptical because of what has happened in the past, and looking at the poor start we have made to the season just reinforces that scepticism. If we are still struggling badly come January, then that will be the time to start questioning our direction. I'm still hopeful that Ollie has what it takes to drag us up the leagues.

Personally Lincoln have never been a bigger club than us (Scunthorpe) and you cant count your 10,000 crowds as 6000 are plastics that don't count. I understand you got 5-6000 regularly when Alexander was in charge but nothing like the 10,000 you have been getting last few years. Admittedly, Lincoln look like a club going places and I don't think it'll be long before we are hit in pursuit and we will be getting crowds like you have been getting.
I do feel for Grimsby as they have got Holloway in but can only see it all ending in tears. Cods simply don't look as though they have any plan whatsoever. A long hard struggle for you is in store this season I'm afraid

Do you want to put your money where your mouth is? A £50 charity bet that we finish higher in the table than you this season? If Scunny finish higher then I will donate £50 to a charity of your choice, if we finish higher then you donate £50 to The Brain Tumour Charity. If the season doesn't run it's full course then a void bet.

Yeah for sure.
I'll have a bet with you lad
Without doubt we will be in playoff spot
Can only see you trying to play catch up
Okay, your on and no disappearing off the site early next year when we're top half and you're languishing in the bottom 2.

I won't be disappearing as very very confident this season now we have Cox in place and someone who knows the club. Like I say it won't be king til we overtake Lincoln
I'm very surprised you want a bet tbh looking at your current plight

I don’t disagree with any of this and to a degree I’m feeling as Ginny describes. Clearly pre COVID IH knew how he wanted to play and a fair amount of that revolves around Clarke and Chas with some additions. What I would say in all of the above nothing provides a guaranteed income stream which we can build infrastructure on especially in an era when anyone with any money will look abroad for talent as it tends to cost less. Like I say until this board can attract and work with other investors which BTW was I believe another reason for brining in Holloway we’re always going to be “possibles” rather than “probables” when it comes to moving up the league. A lot of people paid and unpaid at GTFC work just as hard as anyone at Lincoln or Scunthorpe and we shouldn’t lose sight of that, I personally think we’ll improve on the field but any growth will be organic rather than radical. Let’s not get too hung up on what other clubs do as unless you’re one of about 10 or so elite clubs football is cyclical and we’ll come good again.

Is the smoke from the steelworks finally getting to you Iron man? Unless you get the Cowley's in as Manager you are going nowhere fast, as you are at back at your natural level i.e. bottom half of the 4th Tier. A paltry average of 6,464 a decade ago when in the 2nd Tier that's despite a packed away end every fortnight, is as good as it is ever going to be, with an equally dismal 8-10k max at Wembley for your recent visits, Imps took 29k btw.

Think Bigdog produced a list a few months back showing average league attendances over the period each club has been a member of football league, seem to recall that town were currently in “league1” with an average over 7000, whilst both Lincoln and Scunny were in “league 2” with Lincoln above Scunny with average crowds quite a few hundred more than Scunny.
Honestly, as a town fan who grew up in Rasen and have lived in Lincoln since 1977, I have never took an interest in Scunthorpe and never regarded them as major competitors and appreciate for most town fans they are the big rival but Not for me. Most Lincoln fans I believe see Town as their big local rivals and in reality never hear them discuss Scunny either.
Suppose their bigger than Gainsborough but that’s about it.

Our current plight!! Okay, we're currently bottom of the league but we do have 2 games in hand of everyone else, or put it another way, 4 points behind Scunny with 2 games in hand. I'm confident Ollie will turn it around and we'll be climbing up that table very soon.

Six fingers? Funny enough that's what we call you lot.
Scunthorpe have always been your biggest rival and why would you want to go and live in Lincoln? It's a complete dump. Scunthorpe is the Garden Town of the North

Scunny have the advantage of entering the FL in the early 50's when virtually everyone had their record average attendances post WW2, whereas Town & Imps have the 1890's as part of their rich history, when the game was very much in its infancy. Gainsborough is perhaps a tad harsh there LM56', but perhaps Boston is a more realistic comparison?

An off day for The Imps, although Montsma netted his 6th goal of the season (not bad for a defender)
Small margins went against us, a stonewall pen not given, then Bris Rovers get one when the initial contact was outside of the box. The Gas were well organised defensively and probably edged it overall, so no complaints.

In fairness Norfolk Imp I can't really have a go, second in league one and to be fair looks like you are light years above our level at the minute. I work with three imps and they seem to be more than happy with your start. Can see you having a good season.Appleton looks like he may take you places. Hopefully we can join you next season.
We were poor today but still above the cods and will only improve. Grimsby haven't scored a single goal in three games.
Looking bleak

Light years indeed, after a frustrating set back v Bristol Rovers, the Imps have look back on track v Fleetwood & Plymouth (last night) and have a mouth watering match v Ipswich to look forward to on Saturday .... just doubly gutting no fans are allowed inside as even Imps aged 50-60+ are saying this side is as good if not better than Colin Murphy's team of 1982.

No point quoting Lincs Iron Man on here now. You've got more chance of collecting urine in a paper bag then him seeing it. He's gone into hiding since Scunny lost a few games and we won a couple, and now they're languishing in the relegation zone.

To be fair Les, a spell in Division 5 playing derbies against Kings Lynn and Boston (if he's lucky) will do him good .... although 6 seasons like our good selves is a tad harsh?
