Matt Dean reporting on Twitter that we are close to signing him.

“I understand #gtfc are closing in on a possible permanent deal for Derby County striker Charles Vernam.

The 21-year-old former #Scunthorpe youth player scored once in nine appearances on loan at Blundell Park last season.”

Be glad to have him back but always thought he was more of a no:10 than a striker?

Charles Vernam would be a good signing can play up front or number 10 probably fill the gap with Whitehouse injury, we could also do with back up RB, Koiki at LB, and another striker.

How far off fitness is he following his injury? He looked to be a player with potential if played in the right position (he's certainly not a winger!). It's a bit of a risk if you're signing a player with the expectation that they will be able to play at some point in the future instead of from the first game of the season.

Thought the guy was a cut above in the two games I saw him last season (Colchester and Crawley). Creative, intelligent and looks to get his shots off.

Would it be labelled a risk to sign a young player who's already had two serious knee injuries in two years?

I guess it would, but maybe the contract will be appearance based? Depends how long he's got left at Derby.

Worth the risk for me. We maybe wouldn't be in with a shout had he not had those set backs?

Knee injuries are not as terminal as they once were.

When he was here I was really impressed with his willingness to pick the ball up deep and just run at the defence. Didn’t always work but was willing to have a go to get us going.

Of course there is a risk attached to signing a young lad that's had multiple injuries over the last couple of seasons.

But I firmly believe that if that wasn't the case he'd be playing higher than league 2. Sign him, keep him fit and we'll earn some money of him in the future

Would not go there myself too risky, its so much of an advantage to have players that somehow are able to stay injury free through out most of the season, if he signs lets hope he proves me wrong

Good player, though given that he's had two serious injuries (and he's only 21) you do have to question whether or not this would be a wise investment.

Ask Hull City if they wish they'd have taken a gamble on Charlie Austin rather than turning their back because of a serious knee injury....
Vernam is 21 years old,  he'll heal quickly and we could only hope they do not reoccur, to me there is a cracking player inside him and would live to see us sign him, put him on a 1-year contract with the option for another year and if he stats fit we'd certainly not lose money on him...

Is this also like the time you pretended you saw another player in Cleethorpes and he told you he'd signed?

Waste of time, made up stories and guess work in the hope of randomly seeing somebody sign so you can claim you told the truth.

I never stayed anything as fact, I merely passed on what a somewhat questionable source told me...
This however is pretty reliable - from his closest mates at school... Think of it what you will, but I'm reporting what I've been told by what you'd think is a fairly reliable source...

Can't really write off a player at the beginning of his career because he's had a few injuries, can you? Seems pretty harsh to me.

Worth the risk for his quality and (young) age.  Goal-scorers are worth a bigger risk for their potential return.  Nothing ventured nothing gained.  Jolley is skilled in assessing risk v return.

Leicester took a risk with Vardy who was around 30.  The step-up in class was massive but the gamble paid off.

Really! if you are talking football where is your evidence, if your transferring it across from financial matters ie City trading, I put it to you from World wide travel and high status money affairs to treading through dog excrement around Blundell Park is more of a passion to do what he loves rather than a skill in risk and return

Looked like a really neat player last season. No point in worrying about his injury record or the risk attached to his signing. If he’s gonna get injured he’ll get injured. Look at Whitehouse - no injury concerns there and out for a season before kicking a ball.

Really pleased with this and shows great intent.

What are the issues wthe Jolley’s judgement and a Vardy as a risk?

Vardy was a risk which no other top club would take on him.  He was unproven at anywhere near the top level.  Leicester took a gamble, which paid off handsomely.

Jolley showed last season  that he can get the best out of players.  Eg, Rose, Hooper and Summerfield.  He also brought Fox in that improved the team.

Slade was a very experienced manager who failed to get the players to perform.

Jolley said that he was impressed by Vernam when he saw hiim play last season.  This reduces the risk.  Unless you have serious doubts about the managers judgement generally?

The reference to his previous career should not be taken out of context.  It is just illustrative that Jolley should be a better manager  than Slade (not difficult) and has better judgement.  His results in keeping us up are testament to that.

Did someone have too much sun yesterday? 🌞

Not the point I was making, 25 isn’t nearly 30 particularly in the context of a footballer and because Vardy hadn’t had any injuries and was going up the leagues, not down like Vernam, I don’t really see any valid comparison.

If he can be kept fit, he has enthusiasm and a footballing brain.

I wonder if Jolley is looking at 5+ players scoring 10 each rather than 1 expensive 20 goals forward.

If the team can do the magic "gelling" early doors,  then maybe goals could come from all areas.

It would be good to see 4 or 5 each from set plays by the centre halves - been quite rare in recent seasons.

Must build from the back - tight defense needed please.

I’d be happy with this one as well although I’m not really sure where all our forwards will fit in. Also with the possibly signing of Vernam would mean that we are giving up on trying to purchase a “20 goal a season man” such as Bowman etc etc ?

Cook
Hooper
Robles
Rose
Cardwell
Vernam ?

That’s a fair few forwards on the books but no real stand out player in terms of being a prolific goalscorer....Well...yet !

any new signing could be a risk, look at whitehouse.

He will most likely be fine, not many players give up playing now with injuries like there used to be.

I still think MJ will be looking to sign a recognised centre forward in the Bowman mould... We don't really have a target man-type player who can offer something different to our other forwards.

Perhaps Vernham had been signed as a result of Whitehouse's injury.

For me were only now missing (provided Vernham signs)
a target man, cover at right back and maybe some pace out wide as a different option...

That's a scenario I would always prefer. If you are dependant on a star striker scoring the bulk of your goals then in the event of him getting injured there is a danger of the goals "drying up". If you have several players all chipping in with 10 goals you can still be effective if one of them gets injured.

Struggling to see why people are linking vernam to whitehouse injury. One is a midfielder the other a forward.

It is also easier for the opposition to mark the 20 goal man out of the game than it is to mark 3-4 goal threats out of the game.

The paradox there of course is that, by definition, if a player scores 20+ goals in a season, he’s presumably not that easy to mark out of the game afterall.

Most successful sides have both - a single talisman leading the charge with several others chipping in with decent numbers. That’s certainly how it’s panned our in our last two promotion seasons with Donovan and Amond backed up by the likes of Groves and Bogle respectively.

The consensus, particularly amongst Derby fans, seems to be that Vernam is better than this level. Of course, his career to date doesn’t scream ‘goal machine’ however let’s not forget that he’s 21 and we have a pretty limited statistics sample to go on.

The fact he impressed last season in a side in absolutely wretched form, completely devoid of confidence, gives me reason for optimism (should he indeed sign).

All that said, I concur with the view that we’d still need another striker in the mould of Bowman (i.e. 6ft+). Vernam would be another wee man in a squad whose average height must be well below 6ft; pretty untypical of a modern league two side.

I often think if you have a big, 6ft5 target man you are too tempted to move away from the plan and punt the ball upfield. This team could do with a player in the mould of Gary Jones to link the play intelligently.

Our succesful teams of the 90’s/early 00’s barely ever contained a 20 goal a season man.

Sure i read somewhere that he was the leading under 23 goalscorer in Europe, though i may have dreamt that. His one goal for Town was a very good finish too if i remember.

Looks like in his brief time watching him, MJ saw what a lot of us saw, namely an intelligent footballer, with much promise.

The one thing I remember about Vernam, in the otherwise sad sad game at Crawley, was that he at least showed something, a willingness to carry the ball, look for different angles, and have a shot.  Never got much of a chance because of his injury and I think will do well under a progressive manager rather than a Foghorn-in-a-tracksuit hoofball merchant like Slade.

Success is relative those. Most of those seasons we were in the bottom third of the Championship. Teams in the bottom thirds of a division tend not to have 20+ strikers. If we are to aspire towards promotion we would certainly try and get one.

I read somewhere that he had trials or Milan was looking at him when he was younger? In all honesty I think it’s the best we can be looking at. We aren’t going to be going toe to toe with Notts County and Mansfield for fees and wages. We’ve just got to strike lucky with a few signings. I think if we managed to get both him and Bowman, somebody to obviously replace Whitehouse’s role in the team & the young lad from Burnley on loan at left back I’d feel a lot better.

Town have tweeted a short clip of a player lacing his boots and they’re the same boots that Vernam has worn in pre season images with Derby. Happy with that if it comes through

Exactly! The only way they'll get anything like a few hundred grand off this is if they have a sell on clause and he does well and we flog him to Posh or someone for a million in a year or so.

From the OS:
Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Derby County forward, Charles Vernam on a two-year-deal.

The 21-year-old joined The Mariners on loan in January 2018 going on to make 9 appearances, scoring once before picking up an injury which saw his loan spell end abruptly.

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, Vernam discussed the move and his delight at moving back to his home town. "I'm really happy to get this move done, I feel it's going to be a really important move for me and hopefully I can show similar signs to those when I was last here", said Vernam. "I'm really happy to be back here, back to the area, back with my family and I can't wait to get started again".

Despite not working directly alongside current Manager, Michael Jolley, Vernam discussed how much of a part he had to play in making a return to the club possible. "The first thing was the manager", mentioned Vernam.

"Ever since I got injured, he was in touch with me and the day after I left the club, he was straight on the phone saying that if there was a possibility, he would like to bring me back. When you have got somebody who believes in you like that and wants you to be part of something, it's very reassuring and I almost wanted to repay that faith he showed in me to come back and try help him as much as he has helped me."

Despite his significant injury last season, Charles believes he has come back stronger after taking part in a vigorous pre-season schedule with his previous club. "It's been a long pre-season, which started much earlier than others", said Vernam. "With the injury rehabilitation and trying to get back fit it's been a long time but I feel in a great place and now, it's going to feel like time is going really quick as we build up to the beginning of the season and I can't wait to get back on that pitch in front of our fans!"

We also caught up with Michael Jolley, who spoke to us about bringing Vernam back to the club. "Charles is a very good person and a very good player", mentioned Jolley. "We think he has got a lot of potential and with him being from Caistor, he knows the area really well and is a natural fit. We think that he can be someone who can come in and score goals for us, so we are really happy to bring him back to the club".

The Manager also confirmed that Town had beat a number of clubs to Charles' signature, something that he is happy to have done. “I know there was other interest from other clubs, I think some clubs in League One", said Jolley. "The fact that he was well treated by Grimsby when he was here before, the fact that I’ve got a good relationship with him, he wants to come and be part of what we are doing at Grimsby is a big plus for us.

Charles will now be available for selection ahead of our final home pre-season game vs. Doncaster Rovers this evening, be sure you are part of it by securing tickets via our online ticket store.

Vernam will wear the number 18 shirt for the 18/19 season.

Watching Hooper a few times live and studied most of his other games on video,

JJ  could turn into another Bogle for us,

Under Jolley he might score the 20+ goals a season we are desperate for and move on to bigger things giving us a very big pay day indeed.

We have Vernam now( a good signing) so with JJ on the left and Cookie on the right both cutting in with speed we will have a feared attacking force and  a solid midfield plus a strong defence things are looking up.

I think I am talking myself into a promotion season here.

Very pleased with this. I think his association to the area, and his brief stint here has given us the edge over other suitors. Well done to MJ for convincing him his future is here, and for me this is the signing of the summer. You could tell straight away that he had something about him, and he stood out in an awful team on an awful run. Nice to have a footballer called Charles too. Instantly reminds me of Charles "Charlie" Charles of Fast Show fame.

Welcome Charles.

Well done, you managed to read all the other rumours online that he's close to signing and tried to connect yourself to the story.

Good signing, shows some potential in a bad team before picking up an injury. Hopefully he'll come back stronger and want to see what he can do in a team that has high morale and wants to play.

i am happy to see Vernam back.

Thought he looked good when he came on loan until he got injured. Remember he came into a team that was struggling badly and on a terrible run. He injected a little bit of quality i thought. Hopefully in a better team we will see more of his potential come through. We saw what Jolley did to turn around the performances of some of the players in that run in. Will be interesting to see how the manager can improve all of the players working with them every day.

A risk? Always a potential risk when a player comes back from injury and he is another players we have signed who has limited senior football experience. But I think those of us who have seen him play will think its worth it.

Vernam himself it seems doesnt see himself as an out and out number 9.

Do we think Town will yet bring someone in with a more proven scoring record?

Good signing.  Having people providing the chances is just as important as having someone to take them.

Got to discount his injury issues.  On the link to the Derby forum that someone posted earlier there's a bit of chatter about what it is that they, as a club, are doing as their youngsters have a history of injuries.

What really stands out for me in Vernam's statement is the man management employed by Jolley, that's clearly a big factor in him signing here.  Brilliant, especially when you consider how players were 'handled' under the two previous managers.

Well done, you managed to read all the other rumours online that he's close to signing and tried to connect yourself to the story.

Good signing, shows some potential in a bad team before picking up an injury. Hopefully he'll come back stronger and want to see what he can do in a team that has high morale and wants to play.

What is your issue, all your posts are just negative digs at people. I've only posted a handful of times and you've already decided the jury is in and that I'm some sort of Bentley type poster. My information on this was genuine, Vernham went to caistor grammar school and was in my year, don't know him personally as I am at uni in Bristol and boarded in Rutland for school. I contacted friends who went to caistor who were mates with him, they asked his best mates who confirmed he was set to sign on a two year deal... Why would I choose to fabricate a sad rumour to gain respect from fishy posters who are mere names on a screen?.. We are all here to discuss the same things, I always appreciate it when people share inside knowledge on here, so on perhaps my one chance to contribute such information to the members I did.

How you can have an issue with this Kris is beyond me?

If we can keep him injury free and fit then I'm convinced this lad can be a star player in L2 for us this season. He has undoubted quality and the ability to unlock stubborn defences while chopping in with a few goals.

Add a decent out and out striker and we're looking at a very strong squad IMO!

I think Vernam could be a goalscorer. He is a finisher, he doesnt blast the ball, just strokes it into the corners. Given the confidence and an injury free season, he could be a very successful player for us.

BTW Butty, ignore the trolls and keep posting

Pleased with this. I'm feeling ever more confident as the weeks go by. It seems like we've got a pretty good squad I'm really looking forward to FGR now.

Vernam was a Slade signing originally? Hopefully Sladey got it right for once.

Who was the last Lincs yellerbelly we had as our main striker - I can't think of any since the triumvirate of Drinkell, Wilkinson and Lund? I thought it would have been Gordon Hobson who came after these after years at Lincoln - but was born in Sheffield...

Does anybody have an idea of what fee was paid by the club? Can’t imagine it would have been the bare minimum as Jolley states that there were league one clubs interested, shows great ambition by us

Interesting to see the Mariners video of Charles Vernam. The MJ part of the interview was filmed in Rotherham, so looks like the deal has been set up for a few days and only just broke today!

Yep didnt recall those, stretching the description as main striker a bit though. But they were playing up front a fair bit in a period of decline...circa 150 appearances between them and 30 goals.
A reasonable target for Vernam would be to score more, in 2 years, than those 3 put together.

Thing I remember of him (when he wasn't bunged out on the wing!) was a very positive attitude - got the ball and moved forward with it straight away, whether laying the pass off, getting the shot away or attempting to dribble. Hope his injury problems are resolved and he can continue where he left off.

He played well I thought!

Always wanting the ball, calm and collected in possession, good vision, some neat one touch passing, always looking to play it forward and displayed great control and pace in one particular move when he ran almost the full length of the pitch, left Danny Andrew in his wake and only a good interception from their centre half prevented his low ball into the box from reaching Hooper who would have the easy job of rolling it into the net!

An impressive display and he'll only get better the more games he plays. I just pray to God we can keep him fit because if we do he can light up this division.

He definitely needs a player up top with him with some movement because I feel Hooper is a little too static to play that role. Perhaps Cook will be that player?

No fee is  a good piece of business especially as he was in demand from league 1 clubs let's hope he can add a few goals to his game . Shows he wants to be here which is a big bonus .

Interesting. I suppose that means we still have money in the kitty from the Dembele sale. I wonder if we are still trying to sign the target man from Motherwell that we bid for previously?

If the Dembele cash has been added to the budget, it doesn't necessarily have to be spent on a fee for a player. It could allow us to bring in an extra player and pay his wages for a year or two. I also think that MJ is putting a bit to one side for the January window, and expect to see a couple of players joining us from Sweden. He's already said there are one or two he has his eye on over there.
