That was just too easy, it was a game we were never going to lose but we needed the first goal to settle us down.
And once we scored it we never looked back.
Another one of those games were nobody played badly. But the stand out performers were-
Nielson again, absolutely full of running.
Hannah never stopped running all game, took his goal superbly but messed up the penalty, easily saved.
Magnay as consistent as ever.
Brown and Clay controlled the middle.
The back four were never going to be beaten.
A good all round performance.

Also got to mention the rousing ovation that Lennie got when he came on was very good indeed.

The only thing I could fault was maybe we were not clinical enough I though it could of easily been seven again. Good performance though and a welcome three points well played town.

He did his job yes, he wasn't outstanding, but he did play well.

Not really!! I'll give him credit for setting up Arnold's goal, but he offered very little for most of the game. His only style seems to be knock it past the player and run. If the opponent just stands his ground then Mackreth gets nowhere as he lacks any physical strength!!

Pretty good performance from Mackreth even though he ended up playing against their quick and strong left winger who was moved back when the full back went off injured. Not sure if my eyes deceived me, but he seems a little stockier and stronger than at the start of the season?

I agree with zorro that I'm a little disappointed we didn't score more goals. Hannah alone could have had four very easily and should certainly have scored at least a couple! Not too much criticism of him, however, as it was his best game for us for ages.

We're hanging around in a half-decent position but I really think if we can have a run with a fully (or nearly) fit squad then we have lots of options and might just be capable of putting a real run together.

Tends to be later in the season when lots of teams in the conference with small squads struggle and that could be when we can push on. Who else in the Conference can put out a bench with the quality of paddy, disley, lenny and arnold on it and pittman and aswad still to come back?

I have said it not where you start it's where you finish,

We do not want to be top just yet, come the New Year will be the time to hit the summit and then push on from there.

It would be nice to have gained promotion with a couple of games to spare,

Better for my nerves.

Well if anyone doubts the quality in our squad they are not watching the same players as me. We have the best midfield for ages and the quality of some our play and work rate was great to watch. First half it was close with Steve Burr's team trying to play good football made for a good contest. We did at least score from a corner. The young lad Oates showed some good skills early on but tired and maybe should have come off a little earlier. After Ross's excellent goal we always looked like winning the game and the score line could have been more emphatic and we did miss a penalty of course. Despite that Hannah deserved his ovation for a very hardworking game. It was good to see Arnold on the pitch and although they were tired by then he took up some good positions and showed what a good finisher he is. What can one say about my mate Lenny, well supported by the crowd today and he responded with a cracking good 20 mins, winning the ball, laying it off, playing through balls and was denied a couple if goal bound efforts, loved it.  I am not getting carried away but with players coming back from injury we will be a force to be reckoned with and more of the same on Tues will be good. Finally Craig Clay has to be the find of the season.

Hannah?
Works really hard.  Scored one - the most difficult chance he had.
Misses two one on ones with the keeper and a penalty!

Have to say if it was LJL he'd have been slaughtered for that.

Great 3 pts though.  If we can have Arnold, Hannah, Lewis and then Pittman fit we have a squad that can beat any team.  Special mention to Brown and Clay - great performances.  Parslow did well too in an understated way.

Good around performance , Clay would have been my MOM  , everywhere on the pitch . Pearson as captain good choice . Macca in goal yet again a few scary moments . We do seem to miss these second balls too often and at times appeared unwilling to shoot . Midfield is much more mobile and does create options .
Credit to Chester who came to play which intern made for an enjoyable match
Like someone said consistency , what we don't want or need is wholesale changes just to accommodate the ones who were on the bench the week before .

We have a good squad but its what you do with them .

Made my Saturday night after a couple of stressful days.

As mentioned sounded a very good performance.

What a shame the Meggies game couldn't be moved to allow fans to go to both.

Well done lads. Top 4 by end of october

Good hard working performance, led by Hannah.(hot and cold but I'd give him MOM for workrate alone)

Missed chances yes but I wouldn't say it was just too easy at all.
More that Chester's defence wilted towards the end.

Doigy had it spot on for me in the post match interview on RH.
Good stuff in patches, areas for improvement.
What he exactly means not sure.
But for me there were a few occasions we could have switched play better.

Can't knock the performance though.

Clay looks a L2 player.
Brown did well but rather suprised he got MOM !
Mackreth also worked very hard (as they all did tbf)
Oates looks like he's willing to shoot on sight, definite potential, perhaps tried too much too soon, a bit showboaty at times.

Neilson did great although relatively speaking, thought it was one of his quietest games.
Did notice there was one occasion he wasn't busting a gut by running down the left wing to receive a pass, guess he prefers the central role.

Magnay did well and obviously has a decent long range shot.
But really don't agree when you've got 9 teammates in front of you.

Parslow did fine.
So did Toto but he needs to sort out these back passes and generally speaking if in doubt, stop flipping about taking risks.

Fair play to Hurst IMO, he said he wanted a fast start and we got one.
He could have gone 3 in central midfield to match them up but played 2 up front.

Thank god for that ,thought it was just me. Thought Hannah apart from his goal, looked distinctly average .
Lenny entertained when he came on , but glad he wasnt brought on to get a winner , cant help but like him though .Roll on tuesday.
Back four were sound , midfield all did well, Magnay Clay and Brown the outstanding performers , Wish Macca would catch rather than insist on punching.

Not sure but did notice on MP he said something about not being fully right towards the start of the season.

I agree with zorro that I'm a little disappointed we didn't score more goals.

Just on this subject of goals, I find myself shouting the team on whenever we pick up the ball in space.
Selfishly speaking as a paying fan I want as many goals as possible.
But do wonder if we're in danger of it being a bit headless chickens and if we might be better off passing the ball, keeping possession and conserving energy when the games all but won ?

Did any of the subs get on today and how did they do? What was the attendance?

Chuffed with the result. We needed to brush them aside and we did. Can't say fairer than that. Credit to players and management.

We must follow this up with 3 more points Tuesday. Let's hope we go on and take them.

Agree with most of the posts above, my MOM was Clay although you could have picked any one of four from Brown, Magnay Hannah and Clay, no injuries so I hope we can refrain from tinkering on Tuesday and start with the same players.

Super fit Hannah should have put his penalty away and scored another from his chances to give him a hat trick, LJL and Arnold looked a pair for the short time they were on

Full marks to Chester trying to make a game of it by playing football, although a more astute manager would have resorted to more spoiling Lincoln type methods ie stopping our football which they could not match and bullying our small players out of their stride, this forum won`t be very busy tonight because we are all satisfied well done Hurst, players and crew for an enjoyable day

Agree fully with Clay MOM thought he broke up play, moved the ball quickly and was the fulcrum of all that was good about us today.  He makes so much room for Brown to do his thing, nothing against Diz but he can only be a bit player now because Clay & Brown are so good together.
All players put in a great shift today and I think we knocked the ball around as good as I've seen for ages.
Very surprised that I've seen no one mention Parslow, had a great game and hes a very intelligent footballer. How long we got him for??????
I really want Mackreth to be a great player for us but still not seen it in him. Did his graft today but apart from that not seen anything else to excite me.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Apologies for getting the attendance wrong.

I mean his interview in general was spot on.
As for which areas of improvements he's talking about I'm not sure.
Perhaps the missed chances, who knows. (perhaps I need to listen again)

Thought Mackreth struggled a bit today (as he's mostly done all season), but then again he still won us a penalty and had an assist so hopefully he'll kick on and improve. Hannah is so much better playing with another striker and I'm glad Hurst didn't start with him up front on his own again. Great goal from him, but still needs to be more clinical as he's missing chances you'd expect him to score. LJL did well when he came on - he was so close to scoring two different wonder goals!

Great to hear Clay having another stormer. Seems PH isn't a complete clown as he obviously saw something in the lad that 99% of us didn't in pre-season.

It was apparent from todays game that we are much improved from last season, Magnay, Clay, Brown and Neilson must be some of the best players in this league, we have nothing to fear in this league. We look a different class when we hold a high line and play with pace ,the only time Chester looked like getting into the game was after their substitutions and we sat back until we figured them out.A very professional display today and shows what we can do when we pass the ball to feet.

Not really!! I'll give him credit for setting up Arnold's goal, but he offered very little for most of the game. His only style seems to be knock it past the player and run. If the opponent just stands his ground then Mackreth gets nowhere as he lacks any physical strength!!

Well I really enjoyed that! Some fantastic build up play which deserved more than three goals. I've been very critical of Hannah's lack of awareness of what is going on around him but he gave it a really good shot today. One of the couple of offsides he got pulled up for was marginal to say the least (according to my mate sat in the Lower Findus). Agree with those who said he scored from his hardest chance. Pity about the penalty. LJL didn't enjoy the best of luck. Within two minutes of coming on a fantastic goal bound effort is blocked by a defender who knew very little about it.
Nice to see Arnold. He took his goal very well.
MOM-Clay (again!!) What a find.....

Good performance today but i thought chester were poor..

Lets see what tuesday brings and i am not getting carried away..

We have had good results then flattered to decieve so unlike others im not going to say we are better than last season after a 3-0 win against a poor chester team but its going in the right direction...

Lets see if they can carry it on..

Well done to the team.

We now have to show how we fare against a side of spoilers . Chester came to play football , we  matched them , but for two really poor efforts in the first half they could have scored 2 .

Still work in progress , but getting there . We aren't a bad side , think Barnet will be hard to catch , so really it's just up to us to keep winning .

Chester were poor. I couldn't believe how poor to be fair.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

A very good team performance.  Solid first half, then stepped up in the second half. We could have had more goals.

Neilson was hard for them to handle and tracked back on a frequent basis. Clay was excellent and dovetails well with Brown. We have a good midfield now, and Dlsley and Paddy did not start.

We played some intricate passing moves with only the final ball in the last third letting us down.

We even scored from a corner!

I thought Mackreth was more confident lively and involved than in other games.  Still more to come from him I think.

A very enjoyable game that should also (hopefully) be a baseline for future good results.

Barnet will have a sticky patch soon - maybe a clutch of injuries or suspensions or a couple of pieces of bad luck, so we must be poised to capitalise when that happens. I agree they'll be hard to catch and they really do have a handsome lead, but it's imperative, on this basis, that we take another 3 points on Tuesday night at home, and do the same against Altrincham at home the week after. If we can show ruthlessness, there's no reason why we shouldn't claim the next 9 available points. Do so, and we'll be in or around the play off places going into mid October.

Incidentally, Barnet face some forthcoming difficult fixtures. They're away at Braintree on Tuesday night, followed by Eastleigh at home next weekend, then Macclesfield (A), Kidderminster (H) and Gateshead (A). We can claw points back.

Just back...from the beer fest in celebration......Chester were fuck1n awful.......second half especially we were fantastic...worked hard to close them down, Clay and Brown dominated...Magnay looked composed...Parslow looked like he had played for us for years and Ross worked really hard, should have had a hat trick in reality.
For once i would mention the away support....gave great support up until around 70 mins when i think even they realised their team are sh1t and gave up, put us to shame in that respect.

Cant see what Makreth brings to the party and not the first time i have thought that, tougher times ahead no doubt but quite happy this evening. x

Barnet are 9 points ahead with 102 left to play for. If we can keep everyone fit and stay consistent (big ask I know) I see no reason why we can't win the league.

Yes, but he could outpace with ease the majority of players he came up against, unfortunately McKreth isn't that quick

Good point about a high line.
Little dropping deep, think we did quite well on this front.
Pass the ball to feet yes, although I'd say this was more 1st half than 2nd ?

A fair observation IMO.
Keep working hard, passing the ball and doing the things that worked yesterday, can't see any reason to be unduly worried.

So you keep saying.    we do have good players . would be better if hurst didnt sign crocks, and there we have it,, the reason we wont win the league, Hurst......
Also chester are claiming that 4 of there players where sick at half time  and  not fit to play. just read that on there message board

Clearly the antithesis to the "woodwork" thread. Why can't you just celebrate a win? Plenty of evidence out there yesterday to suggest that we can accommodate the odd injury prone player-oh and shouldn't it be "crock" as we don't appear to have more than one who falls into that category. I wonder if Arsene Wenger gets slagged off by the Arsenal fans for signing "crocks"

Denni is right, a 3-0 win is completely and utterly unacceptable and Hurst should be sacked on that result alone.

Hurst was right in playing Mackreth, even though he wasn't amazing he brings a lot more to the game than Disley/paddy if played out wide. He provides an outlet out wide and gets up and down the line very well. We need to play with width rather than a lop sided midfield with a central midfielder going through the motions out wide.

It isn't a spelling test. The point I was making was that even with that you want to make it worse-crocks implying several. As for posting after we win....I can find one post celebrating the victory but surprisingly posts in the tens when we lose. I must have missed all your positive offerings

Good thinking.
I'm wondering where Arnold (assuming he stays fit) fits into the equation long term.
Versatile can play on the wing but was up front yesterday.
Neilson is left wing but in a kind of free role.
Wonder what our best team is generally gonna look like and who (if anybody) will make way and where.

I'd say that with a fully fit squad it's difficult to pick our best XI or best formation but that reflects the fact we have depth in the squad and some versatility within it.
