Today was a real disaster for them. They really needed three points. Take a look at their 8 remaining games......

Doncaster A
Stockport H
Crewe A
MKD H
Mansfield A
Wrexham A
Morcambe A
Notts County H

There is a run of 5 games starting with Stockport where they play the current top 5 one after another.
They have only three remaining home games.

Looking at that list I'd say they would be doing well to get 12 points. That would take them to 45 points.  So six points for us from our remaining 9 games might very well be enough to ensure our survival.

They have to play four of the top five, but they have more winnable games. They have only picked up four points from their last 6 games but they have 2 games in hand so I think they will end up with more points than FGR.

You really think we will struggle to get six points?

Look at our recent away record. Draws at the teams currently in 7th, 9th and 12th.

And a home win against the team in 4th. I certainly think we can beat Swindon and Bradford at home and get a few away points too. It would not surprise me at all if we beat Wrexham next weekend.

This run will come to an end at some point, as our winless run eventually came to an end, but I do finally feel that when we do lose, we will have the confidence and desire to put it right next time out.

What was a pretty hapless bunch of losers a few weeks ago, have somehow been motivated to fight for the cause.

At a guess Swindon and Bradford City at home plus we have a good chance v Newport and Wrexham plus the Colchester game so I think there is at least eight points in just those five games.

I do agree, don’t get me wrong, but when we played Bradford on TV, the commentators said something astonishing - their unbeaten run against Town is the longest in their history. Considering they’ve been in all 4 divisions in recent times, they’ll have played pretty much everyone, so they really are our bogey team.

I seem to remember our last win against them - I reckon it was the 4-3 at Valley Parade in 96/97. One of my biggest regrets - I was at uni not too far away at the time and decided on the morning that I’d give it a miss as I’d be on my tod. Wish I’d gone.

We beat them at home in the 98/99. Lee Nogan header. Gary Walsh in goal for them.

It was actually 2-0. Funny, ‘cos I could remember Nogan’s looping header vividly (I was sat right behind it), but recalled nothing of Groves’ goal. I suppose it was nearly 26 years ago.

We just need to get our heads down and keep doing what we’re doing. If run ins were decided on paper then we’d have lost to Notts County in the first National League play-off game.

We started our difficult run two games ago and we have already taken 4 points from them, we a different team to the one which lost to Doncaster. On a unbeaten run which will give the team confidence going into the next home game against Wrexham, who are having a bit of a wobble.

Lets pack out the park next week and put a spanner in Wrexham's promotion charge, a win next week will be a massive step towards securing our league status.

For me, it’s only worth going week by week. Another game ticked off today. We’ve advanced another point on FGR, and held our ground on Colchester. We’ve gained a point on Salford and Swindon and we’ve conceded 2 points to Sutton, but with minimal impact due to their deficit. All in all, a good Saturday, and a good week and another game chalked off.

Next Saturday is winnable but the value of the result, whatever it is, can only be judged by what the other 3 or 4 teams do. In that regard, I don’t really see the point in trying to speculate on where 3 points might come from and how it might move us either closer to safety or nearer to peril. All of our rivals have hard looking fixtures next Saturday, bar Swindon who don’t play. 3 points or a draw for us next Saturday could be massive, or we could lose, along with all our rivals, and we’d still call it as ok as we’d lost no ground. Game by game is the only show in town really, with regard to judging the relative importance of a result.

Mansfield v Colchester is an early KO, so we might be a bit more relaxed than usual before the Wrexham game. Hope so.

We don't look like losing (maybe today we got a tad fortunate)and that will do for me .

I'm not sure we are now even in the conversation for the drop - if we are so are Salford & Swindon maybe even more so than us .

Realistically FGR need 3 more wins than us , they keep losing to relegation rivals and have some top teams hungry for points to play .
They’ll be more worried then us

And you’d be justified in expecting Mansfield to tonk Colchester, with the form book also suggesting that Donny won’t lose to the vegans. If that’s what transpires, the fact that it’s another game ticked off would matter more than the actual result of our game. I’m grateful for that, and we’ve earned that  from our recent impressive unbeaten run.

On the face of it, FGR have the hardest run in of the bottom 4. Looking at the average position of opponents, along with the average points difference between the teams (on today’s table), shows -

GTFC:
Average Position - 11.5
Average Pts Difference - 14.3 pts ahead of us

Colchester:
Average Position - 10.2
Average Pts Difference - 23.1 pts ahead of Col U

FGR:
Average Position - 7.5 (ooooof)
Average Pts Difference - 27.6 pts ahead of FGR

Sutton:
Average Position - 12th
Average Pts Difference - 23.5 pts ahead of Sutton

We all know what can happen on any given matchday, and there are a million different factors that come into it. Home v Away, oppo with nothing to play for, injuries, etc.

I’m still erring on the side of having soiled duds, but FGR will be looking at 1pt from three games against us, Col U & Sutton in the last 6 weeks and must be thinking they’ve made it much harder for themselves.

Sutton have the best run in but even just 1 point in our 2 in hand would put us 10 clear of them with 7 to play. A single win and we’re 12 clear with a much better GD.

Sutton’s marginally easier run-in (in terms of the average placement of their opponents) has to be offset by the fact they have 2 less games than us to accrue points. They’re currently 9 points behind us, with an inferior goal difference, with those two games less to play. They’re an irrelevance really; if we fall behind them from our current vantage, we’d absolutely deserve to go down. That won’t happen.

If we’re not already there, we’ll soon be entering “silly season” when it comes to unexpected results, but Forest Green’s run-in really is an absolute shocker. To have just 8 games left and to face the entire current top 5 (3 of those fixtures away) is just horrendous luck from their perspective. Their so-called easier games are against Donny (up next, and currently 2nd in the form table), Morecambe (likely still fighting for a play-off spot) and Notts County (a lot better than their current position). It’s a huge ask of a side that just lost at home to Sutton.

Colchester have an extra game on us, but also have all the top 4 to play, and it’s worth noting that it’s tight up there with 2nd, 3rd and 4th all currently on 67 points. They’re also bang out of form, having only won 1 game since Christmas, and that was back in January. Their game against us keeps things interesting, but they need to find some wins from somewhere.

It’s only 4 weeks since that Donny capitulation, but it seems like an age - it’s been so different since. The 10 points since then has made such a difference to our outlook, and I feel pretty relaxed about the situation tonight. I’ve followed Town for too long to proclaim we won’t go down, but completing the season at even half the rate of the last 6 should see us comfortably safe.

If FGR had played the top 5 teams already, their current points total now would probably be a lot lower.

I ran the calculator and was not generous to us, we did ok, in fact we have enough points already in its forecast

https://www.thefishy.co.uk/calculator0.php?Competition=4

21     Grimsby     46     -29     42
22     Colchester     46     -27     40

You think we will only get 3 points from our last 9 games???
And i thought I was a pessimist.

Despite their recent run of form, I think FGR are going down because Colchester have 2 more games and have a couple of slightly easier fixtures.

I also think that at least two of FGRs 4 recent wins were massively against the run of play according to the stats, and the fact that they lost at home to Sutton suggests that their current good run of results is not really sustainable, especially when you look at their remaining fixtures.

Ok, they got a couple of unexpected wins, against Walsall for example. But Walsall have gone off the boil recently and couldn't beat Colchester today.

I really do think they will do incredibly well to get 12 more points. So 45 points would be a pretty  outstanding total for them. So in my book we need seven points or six if there is not a huge goals diff turnaround.

So unless we have a major and sustained collapse I now believe that we will stay up.

If “form” counts for anything, we are the only Team unbeaten in the last 6 games, Colchester haven’t won in the last 6 games

aaSutton are adrift on points.  FGR play all the top teams.  We are above Colchester.  We have games in hand on Salford and Swindon.  Both teams are not picking up as many points as we are on current form.   Both are catchable and we have to play Swindon at home.

With our unbeaten run we should continue to look upwards and keep picking teams off.

This is a really strong point. If we lose and the Vegetabalists and Colchester have both won, the complexion shifts hugely and the picture becomes anxiety-inducing once again. This is the point about game by game….Saturday night could make us look almost safe, holding our ground, or, in deep sh1t.

I'm not sure about that. Even if results go against us like that, we would still be three points clear of FGR with a game in hand, better goal difference, and a far easier run in.

I posted a week ago that I thought 4 points from our next four games would be ok. We have already got them from the first two. Anything else is a bonus. But the April fixture list is heavily in our favour verses FGR.

You can also add to that Colchester getting anything out of an away fixture at champions elect Mansfield is highly, highly unlikely. We’ll know the outcome of that one before we kick-off, at least.

FGR need to overturn 7 points on us in just 8 games, I think in reality we’ll probably need as little as 5 points from our remaining 9 games which I think we’ll do with relative ease.

With the fixtures each side have, I think we’ll be safe with 2-3 games left.

If you’re not feeling anxious with us 3 points off second bottom you’re a better, calmer man than I.

However….it won’t happen because they ain’t getting anything other than beaten at Mansfield.

No point trying to second guess results in football matches, as you invariably get results you didn't think possible. Our win over MKD being a prime example after they had previously out-footballed and beaten the very good footballing side Mansfield on their own patch.

Who would have thought that FGR would lose at home to Sutton after seeing off the form team Walsall the previous weekend?

You have to look at the bigger picture. When PH was sacked, we were 1 point above FGR having played a game more, and now we are 6 points ahead having played a game less, and have another point cushion with our superior goal difference. Sutton were 4 behind us but are now 9 behind. Colchester were 2 above us having played a game less and are now 6 behind, also with a worse goal difference. There are a lot of positives, and the only negative for me over the last 6 games is not turning a couple of away draws into wins, especially the Sutton game, but we are at the bottom end for a reason.

There have been 20 games since that day at Doncaster and although we are still in the same place in the league, we have a bigger cushion and the games are running out, adding pressure on the chasing pack.

Speaking of Doncaster, they themselves were taking some right batterings. Losing regularly by 3's 4's and a couple of 5's, before they got their act together and are now doing well. Tranmere have also turned it around in recent months, and hopefully, we are showing the same roots of recovery displayed by those two. Newport are another side who were struggling early on but are now working their way up the league. It can be done.

The upshot is that we are in the driving seat with our current position, and have kept FGR and Sutton in the rear view mirror over a lengthy period, and seen Colchester drop below us in the process. The teams immediately above us are still in our sights too, when it looked at one stage that the bottom four were being cut adrift.

Still plenty of twists and turns to come yet, but if we blow it from here, we deserve to go down.

Same TBH, but since the Donny debacle we seem to have lost some of the traits you see in a relegation side.

Firstly we’ve not lost a game, everyone is together & pulling in the same direction for each other.

We’re defending really well & not conceding loads of goals followed by recriminations & finger pointing.

Yeah maybe we should have turned at least one of the draws into wins but we’ve ground out & earnt every point.

Im sure the unbeaten run will end before we’re mathematically safe, hopefully not this Saturday against Wrexham though, I’d just “love it if we beat them”’ as someone once said.

National League looks fairly weak now. In the past there always seemed to be a bottleneck of bankrolled or quality teams trying to get out. Now there seems to be more traditional non league clubs in the play-off spots and the ex-league clubs all have off the field issues.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sutton and FGR won promotion next year.

Has it ever happened since the inception of 2 up, 2 down, that both relegated teams have been promoted at the first time of asking? Personally, I think FGR’s problems are largely that Dale Vince is losing interest, and I think this might be the last we ever see of the veggies as an EFL club.

As ever, this is always the big question of heavily bankrolled clubs; what happens when the sugar-daddy stops sugar-daddying? Sometimes there’s a decent succession plan - Bournemouth are still doing alright some 13 years after they were bought by Maxim Demin and Brighton will almost certainly fine when Tony Bloom eventually hands over the keys to the Amex, but there are no shortage of examples where the ending isn’t so happy; see Rushden & Diamonds, Gretna and, oh, Scunny, for example.

Vince has built Forest Green so prominently in his image, or the image of his commercial interests, that I would imagine potential buyers will be very few and far between when he decides to give them up.

“I hope it hurts them as much as it hurts me…”

Throwing the players under the bus then.

It’s incredible that a team who were in L1 last season, and spent a fortune on agents this season, could be adrift at the bottom like this.

There must have been some truly abysmal retention and recruitment decisions. They went through three managers too didn’t they?

After consecutive relegations, finishing adrift of the dross of league 2, and getting turned over 6 zip think I’d ‘throw them under the bus’ too. Seems fairly possible the players are responsible rather than poor luvs who’ve tried hard and just got a bit unlucky..

Proper glad they are on there way back where they belong, two more relegations after this one should do it.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Funny you say that, because I had that same thought a couple of weeks ago, given they’d already been relegated from League One. You have to zoom in a bit but they’ve left that one on. It was one of the cringiest things I’d seen for a long time when they announced those stars; it’s even worse if they keep them now they’re back where they started.

I don’t remember FGR winning the World Cup even once, let alone twice - what the f#ck are they meant to signify?!

Promotion won or a MacDonalds trainee

Good grief - the very definition of a vanity project then?!

Didn’t Vance also have a tattoo on his neck with a stripe for each promotion?

“I hope it hurts them as much as it hurts me…”

Throwing the players under the bus then.

It’s incredible that a team who were in L1 last season, and spent a fortune on agents this season, could be adrift at the bottom like this.

There must have been some truly abysmal retention and recruitment decisions. They went through three managers too didn’t they?

They hired Duncan Ferguson with a 5 year contract then dropped him a few months later after he failed to keep them up, I imagine it cost a fair amount to unburden that 4-and-a-half-years wages for a start.
