Matt Heywood is the worst defender I can ever remember us having, that's an achievement with the back line he played alongside. He had the moving ability of a fridge, they'd already scored by the time he turned around after being beaten outside the box.


There's actually something very odd about the case of Matt Heywood. He was 28 when he signed for us, pretty much in his prime, having played almost 300 games at League Two level at least, but mostly in the league above.

He signed having won player of the year at Brentford, where he was the captain. He'd not suffered any major injuries that I'm aware of.

But then here, as you rightly point out, he was an absolute travesty. He left, signed for Barrow, got sacked for 'breach of contract' without ever playing a game, played a few games for Buxton and then never graced a professional football field ever again.

I find it hard to believe that he simply just 'turned 'shìt' overnight; there must've been more to it.
