Just wondering if more will go tomorrow evening after the debacle of Saturday and to maybe to see how some of the squad players perform?
Myself, I shall be there mainly because my son wants to see as many  towns games as he can and don't want to penalise him because of my beliefs.
Personally I would not have bothered knowing its part of a franchise that's become devalued  due to the input of the premier league, as has been discussed on the "chuck a trade tickets" thread...

Imagine we might see Emblem and perhaps even Pringle start, in order to get some minutes. Fox too as he’s coming back from injury.

I mean, it’s essentialy a glorified friendly..

On holiday at Primrose Valley but wouldn't have gone anyway.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

You won't see Embleton. He's away on international duty, and Pringle isn't fit.

I wouldn't go if I lived next door to BP and it was free.

Looks its a dirty feeling (I cant attend anyway) but as much as I despise what theyve done with this competition, I quietly think the format of it is perfect for us this season. A group stage format therefore multiple low pressure low attendance games for michael jolley to experiment and use squad and youth players, I really hope someone unexpected stands out, we could just do with someone right now to provide a spark

The principle remains the same however many seasons this shambles of a competition continues. Out with friends tomorrow, phone switched off.

Not going. Those nasty bullies have put me off so much I moved 200 miles away.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

I assume that you're talking about England ladies World Cup qualifier tonight? It's the only game I know of that you could be talking about. Although I find it a tad harsh you're saying it wasn't great Saturday when they beat Wales 3 0 last time out

Is Thomas eligible? Does this count as the second of his two match ban?  Or is he eligible but banned for Saturday?

I know what you're saying with this one and it highlights what the competition should have developed into if they wanted to breathe new life into it.

A youth orientated stipulation (top of my head something like 5 of the starting 11 have to be Under 23 and products of your own youth set-up) but without the abomination of the Academy Elite teams entering would have generated far more interest than this farce.
A lot of fans of the clubs involved have an interest in seeing how their own kids develop, for clubs like Town who might not have a lot of 21/22 year olds in their side who have come through their system, it would be a chance for the final year youth lads to get some game time - but rather than getting thrown straight in against 11 fully grown men they get a bridge to professional football.  Gives the clubs a better chance of testing the water on those that they're not quite sure about too, especially as they might not get the opportunity in league games and the young lads get released without having a chance to see what they're like in the big time.

Instead we've got this joke of a competition that no-one agrees with, no-one really wants and quite frankly is an embarrassment to everyone involved.  The way this and the League Cup are going, the Football League are in danger of both of their cup competitions going down the pan.    Neither tournament has flourished in recent years but the accelerated lack of interest has come under the guise of Shaun Harvey.  Because he can subsidise these tournaments with sponsorship money, he's avoiding any scrutiny from the members.  Once that sponsorship well dries up he's a dead man walking.

Sorry guys but I’ll be there tonight. My 4 year old little boy is absolutely football mad and he’s slowly learning the game and starting to support town. Unfortunately he is absolutely terrified by large crowds of people and taking him to a league game on a Saturday is just not an option at the moment, so games like tonight and friendlies are the only games he can go to until he gets a bit older. He’s always so disappointed when he can’t go so he’s so excited about tonight, and I can’t wait to take him!

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

The monetary gains for any of the top six of the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League and for the bottom ten of the Premier League to stay in the division are far too great for them to even take the FA Cup seriously never mind the EFL's cup competitions. Teams dropping out the Premier League even get £100m or so for getting relegated which dwarfs the £6m the Champoinship clubs receive. Where's the equity in that? The whole system is fooked up.

In ten years Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool etc will receive over £2bn in TV money. A club like ours will receive £5-10m. In that time they will spend more on one player twenty or thirty times over than an amount that will set up a club like ours up for a century. And all because those teams want to beat Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG in a Champions League Final. A cup competition that only one team can win every year is ruining the foundations of the whole game in Europe and we're left with these stupid competitions like tonight because clubs like ours are scared of missing out on one or two breadcrumbs from a huge banquet.

The sooner the top six clear off into a European Super League the better, because what would be left would still be a hugely marketable product to sell to the TV companies, and without the stranglehold of the top six a more equitable carve up of the reduced spoils would have to happen. It is only then that EFL clubs at the bottom of the pile would be allowed to flourish..

Not quite the same as watching it live with your mates on a crowded terrace, no atmosphere!

Yep, id say that would be the case it usually happens when a new manager comes in we've experienced that ourselves recently.  I just hope they get the mins and put in a decent performance, despite the result.

£10 to watch on iFollow, man that's crazy pricing.

Whilst we know plenty won't watch a Checkatrade game (I'm not), surely from a business point of view, it's a nothing game, and a chance to grow the iFollow live-stream subscription service.

Give it away, charge a £1, just get people into the habit of watching, so when other games are screened later in the season the pool of potential subscribers has grown.

Let's face it, it's hardly going to impact the attendance at BP.

Something like this I think. If we win we all have to take up smoking Capstans, earring mufflers and throwing flat caps into the air

Notts county better all over the pitch than us, we can't pass the ball more than 3 times without giving it back.

Get in.... 1st minute of the second half Hooper runs the full length of the pitch with the ball, flicks it up over the keeper and nods the ball into the net....great solo effort.......1-1

Get in.... 1st minute of the second half Hooper runs the full length of the pitch with the ball, flicks it up over the keeper and nods the ball into the net....great solo effort.......1-1

[/quote

Hope it was met with uncontrolled delirium by a packed out pontoon. Bet it silenced the hundreds of county fans who had travelled

DONT GET EXCITED ... Commentator says that actually Hooper didn't realise that he was actually the only person on the pitch and it was actually the half time 5 year old goalkeeper he flicked it over and JUST scored.. So I'm afraid it's still 1-0.

And the incompetence of the little things continue to make GTFC a laughing stock with other clubs and fans. Just read this Twitter thread. Before anyone moans "It's only spelling," perception is everything. There's some people at the club that are just not up to the job, however simple it is..

Don't spoil it Lukeo!  I hear Robles is having an absolute stormer ,leaving defenders in his wake . The Sevilla, Valencia and Bilbao scouts are looking seriously impressed

Thats strange - the Telegraph are reporting we have been much the better side with Thomas excellent, against a full strength County side. They are saying it shows what good depth there is in our squad.

53' and Thomas is at it again, this time takes on 2 defenders, megs a 3rd and puts it through the keepers legs and then smashes it into the pontoon and runs off celebrating... Hang on, he's still running.... He's literally just run out of the park and has continued down Grimsby Road.

55' Substitution for Grimsby Town - Thomas off McKeown on.

60' Substitute for Grimsby

Clifton is brought off and replaced by the man in pontoon seat D36.

MJ heared a sigh from the stand, a kind gentleman pointed the man out for MJ to tell him to kit up and 'Show me you can do better'

We sound like we've picked up going into this second half.

Town corner
After good work by the block from the pontoon winning the ball back for Town, advancing on goal and curling an effort that looked goalbound before taking a deflection.

PENALTY!
For Town....wonderful ball over the top by Pontoon man, Vernam advances into the box, gets in front of his marker who bundles him over.

Rose to take.

Do they even know football? Town where bringing on Akheem Rose whilst the ball was out of play and whilst that was happening Robles run passed 4 defenders and kicked the ball over the keepers head... So it's still 1-1 i'm affraid

Added time
Somehow the referee has found 67 minutes of added time from somewhere....he must be enjoying himself out there.

town win 2-1. Full Time.

Have to say that bloke in the pontoon is a lucky omen, since he was mentioned coming onto the pitch we went from 1 down to winning 2-1.

Haven’t paid any attention to this tournament, but the fact that Sunderland are playing Stoke U21 is shocking.

Still, first cup win since we came up, and nice to see we can beat a struggling Notts County.

Our attacks in the second half were more direct and quicker than any other match ive seen this season, would be good if we could manage that in a league game

As little as I care about this competition and as much I'd prefer we were out of it as soon as possible, on the back of two defeats this win may be more important than it otherwise might have been.

Looked a decent side put out from Notts County* who will have been keen to impress Kewell tonight - hopefully gives us a little bit of much needed confidence to take to Bury.

* Going off the team sheet that is, I didn't go and won't go to a match in this competition until the B-sides no longer take part in it.

Different team in 2nd half, Hess added energy, Thomas is decent quality finds space and decent control. A Rose looks handy, real pace and not lightweight. Robles not up to much, Hooper 1 good run and cross, M Rose usual mix. But I didn't see the game honest.

I think you might be surprised - I guarantee you it would be our lowest Wembley turnout ever. I think a lot would depend on how the rest of our season was going and who the opponent was.

If we were struggling down the bottom of the league and about to face Stoke u-21s I think the whole affair would be a really hollow experience and I genuinely doubt we'd take more than 5,000, keeping in mind we only took around 13,000 for our last play-off final there.

It's not a soapbox. Some things are worth more than money and glory, and there is no way i will attend a game in this competition, even if we reached the final. If we got to the Prem, then great, but the Prem will likely kill clubs like ours before that became a reality, and if you want to help them achieve that in some small way, then feel free, but count me out.

First half they bossed it. Second half, especially after Hessenthaler came on we got stuck in and showed a lot more hustle and energy.
It was a good turn around.

Good news in a war that might not have happened without her cuts to the navy making it look like we weren't committed to the Falklands, on top of encouraging British business to sell arms to fascist illegitimates so they could shoot at Britons.

Apart from that, it's a fitting comment.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

Ha Pedantic about my spelling when you didn't spell fiancée correctly either? Come on now.

Relevant to what? This wasn't a league game. If you're against U21 sides in the competition, are you not legitimising their inclusion by going to any of the games? If you aren't against U21 teams, then fair do's, there's little point in chatting about it.

Although we may not like the competition, there was still plenty to take from the game

We won
Andrew Fox and Luke Hendrie got some much needed game time and got better as the Match went on
Wes Thomas played 90 mins and looked a real threat
Harry Clifton is not ready to play centre mid yet
Louis Roubles is not ready to play any position yet.
JJ Hooper is much more effective in a more central role and when he puts some effort in
Akeem Rose is a real prospect
Mitch Rose can still take penalties

I don't mind admitting I was there tonight, albeit in a working capacity.

First Half: Thought Notts County started brightly and bossed it for the first 20-25 minutes and deservedly took the lead through a decent Amesandra goal. Town came back into it and played some decent stuff leading up to half time and finished the stronger. Could have equalised through a well-crafted Wes Thomas effort that just bounced wide when he hit over the keeper.

Second half: Much like the first half early on, Notts had a good 5 or 10 minute spell but Town took control from there on out. Mitch Rose had a stormer of a second half and played some top class balls over the top, one of which led to Thomas hitting the bar on the half-volley and the other leading to Vernam being fouled for the penalty. Was very impressed with Towns energy, creativity and endeavor, they pressed County high up the pitch and forced them into either making a mistake or punting it high upfield which Whitmore and Famewo ate up!

What impressed me most second half was some of the interplay between the players, its clear they've been working on their technical attributes in training. There was one moment in the second where Town went from defending a corner to having a shot on goal with 3 or 4 quick incisive passes, would have been a terrific goal.

For what it's worth:

Russell: Couldn't do much about the goal. Made some good saves, commanded his area well and distribution very good at times. 7/10

Hendrie: I really like this lad. Seems to get better with each appearance, strong, mobile, gets forward very well and good on the ball. RHJ will have a job getting back in IMO. 7.5/10

Whitmore: Impressive again. Won everything in the air, rarely loses out in a tackle and very positionally aware. A rock solid, no nonsense centre half. 7/10

Famewo: More cultured that Whitmore but equally as impressive. Very assured in the ball, at one point beating two men to bring the ball out of defence to set up a Town attack. Fast, athletic and an excellent foil for Whitmore. 7.5/10

Fox: Eased into the game, sensibly so given his recent return from injury. Provided a nice balance on the left and got forward well. Seemed to communicate well with Hendrie in knowing when to bomb forward and when to hang back. If he can stay fit then we've got 2 very good full backs for this level. 7/10

Rose: Quiet first half but probably his best display in a Town shirt second half. Controlled the ball well, some excellent, accurate first-time balls forward and seemed to thrive with the armband. Really liked how he filled in a full back when Hendrie went forward and created some good chances from deep. 8/10

Clifton: Typical Harry performance, full of energy and running, created some decent chances and worked well with Rose. I'd just like to see him start to effect games a little more but that will come with experience. 6.5/10

Vernam: Good display, quick, skillful, creative and hard working. Deserved a goal tonight but they'll come. Has to be in the starting XI regularly for me. 7.5/10

Hooper: One decent run first half but other than that pretty anonymous. When Town were attacking first half, a ball was played into JJ but he was so static it was intercepted easily and County broke upfield, it only needed him to be on his toes and move toward the ball but it seemed he backed out when he realised it was a 50/50. For me he has to show a lot more to justify a starting berth. He gets nowhere near the starting XI when everyone is available IMO. A weak link. 5/10

Robles: Full of pressing and endeavour and actually showed some good strength, pace and technique first half, better when he moved out to the right. A raw talent but certainly something there to work with and develop without doubt. More impressed than I thought I would be but still a way of the starting XI for me. 6.5/10

Thomas: Had a good game tonight. Showed some excellent positional sense and movement to beat the offside trap first half, chip over the on-rushing keeper and was unlucky to see it bounce narrowly wide. More good movement to get on the end of a Rose ball over the top, got in front of his market and only the crossbar stopped him opening his GTFC account with a great half-volley. You can see his experience, his movement and hold up play is excellent at times and he brings others into play well. If he gets decent service he will get goals this season, of that I have no doubt. 8/10

Subs:

Cook: Some bright moments and decent interplay but didn't have the impact I thought he might against a tiring defence. Interesting that he played on the left which is where I can see him fitting in best once Thomas is over his suspension and up to speed. 6/10

Hessenthaler : Another cracking display from the young lad and for me has been one of the best players this season. Has all the attributes to be an excellent midfielder for us. Provided energy, drive and creativity. I can only see him going from strength to strength. Deserved his goal. 7/10

A Rose
: Got 10 minutes at the end and did well. Looked nervous initially and showed his inexperience by putting the ball out of play when under no pressure. Grew in confidence though and almost scored with a terrific turn and shot from 20 yards that the keeper did well to turn around the post at full stretch which led the corner in which we scored the winning goal. Will be interesting to see what part he plays this season but I get the impression we'll see him in the squad more often than not and could start to get some minutes the more the season wears on. All the attributes to do very well but will need time to develop, you can't teach pace and this lad has it in abundance. He will terrify league 2 defenders. Under the right coaching team to develop into a really exciting player for us. 6.5/10

I know this competition is detested by most and I wholeheartedly respect everybody's opinion, but as others have said it could be just the right format to develop attributes within the team. We either throw in the towel and play the kids or use it to our advantage & utilise the competition to develop the team and I feel that's what we did tonight.

All in all, It was a very good run out against a strong, experienced Notts County side that were all out to impress their new manager.

A lot of positive to take from tonight in my opinion and you could see from the goal celebrations from the players, subs, management /coaching  team the value they place in building a winning mentality, regardless of the competition.... League 2, FA Cup, Checkatrade Trophy, Lincs Senior Cup etc etc.... A win is a win and we have a good platform to build upon.

But, if said fiance/fiancee is in fact your betrothed, then presumably at some point you have either asked or agreed to marriage with said fiance /fiancee... therefore falling in line with your sexually.

Very disappointed the turnout was higher than 500. We as fans need to stick together on this issue. This competition is an absolute disgrace. All these kids playing for youth Premiershite clubs most of who will never get anywhere near their first teams.

Get off your soapbox mate, money talks and if we got to Wembley most would still go.

I don't like the premshite but hey ho if we ever got there Blundell Park would not be big enough..............................and I don't just mean for away fans either.

You don't seem to understand this issue. It is not that we are against the Premier League per se but against the idea of the Premier League teams having 'B' teams in the lower leagues.

'B' teams in the lower leagues is purely to feed the big English teams greed. They accumulate huge squads and acquire most of the best young players and then realise they can't get them enough competitive game time. So they tried to float the idea of 'B' teams because they see the likes of Spain and other continental leagues doing it. What they fail to realise or do not appreciate, is that the English League has so much depth when compared to other Leagues around Europe there absolutely no need for 'B' teams. If they want players to develop through game time then loan them out. If you can't loan enough out, then don't have so many.

The 3 lower Leagues with 'B' teams was rejected out of hand and so they came back with this a abomination of a cup competition.

Why? They tell us because it will help develop English talent. This is clearly a lie, see how many English players Man City fielded in the Chuckaway Trophy this week. No, the only reason for this competition is so people can get used to seeing 'B' teams in the guise of U23 teams. Then people will get used to it and when that happens they will put there 'B' team idea forward again. Then when allowed it will destroy lower league football and teams clinging on to their football league place will find they are playing non-league regional football again. That could well be us.

agreed.

fair play to the scunts who only had 800 odd for their match

disappointing number of crowds were in 4 figures (just) but other highlights include the 724 at Burton, the 639 at macc and big congratulations to Colchester who only attracted 532 fans to their match

I now feel it’s just a waste of time boycotting now. I didn’t like the idea but, controversially, I agreed with Fenty with regards the competition was dying and needed re-energising because, as Lincoln showed, there is some money to be made from it. However, there would have been other ways to give it a reboot. Group stages that were just regional (Us, Scunny, Lincoln and Donny for example). I won’t be complaining that much if we make a wod of cash out of it as that’s good for the club. If we gef out the group and give Jolley a bigger budget to get these players from Sweden that he wants then how can anybody complain? Yes it isn’t ideal but I can’t see B teams coming into league football anytime soon. Nobody wants that, only 8 clubs need to reject it.

Can anyone name this Brave 8 that are gonna stand up to the moneymen and turn down the Premiership, make enemies of everyone at the FA, National Team set-up and Football League, and also take the money off all the other teams in the league? Who’s gonna be sat at their boozy Portugal meeting, looking everyone else in the eye and say “no, because we value what 3000 of our fans think”?

Because it’s certainly not going to be any fornicator in our boardroom.

The thing is last night GTFC earned £10,000 for winning, then they receive £20,000 for participating in the Competition, so that's £30,000 so far banked with another couple of wins in this 1st round that's another £10,000 per win which could make them £50,000 before round 2,  which is then £20,000 per win, what i'm saying here is our club can make some easy cash from this Comp which is what we all want for our club isn't it ?

Soapbox, it is a message forum to discuss views and opinions isnt it?

I for one would not go to Wembley, Rochdale, or wherever Southamptons under 21's play. A bit of money may well help but IMHO that is short termism and the survival of lower league football should not be able to be bought.

The competition did need a revamp but they could have done that by having local derbies in a group stage, to boost interest, tighter regional draws and then the north v south final.

IF they did that from next year i bet the crowds, the interest and the game time for our own players would increase rather than giving a run out to the Charlie Adam's of this world!

I paid £10 to watch the game on I follow for the following reasons,

1. Living in Suffolk I do not get to many games for a lot of reasons,

2. I wanted to see Thomas start his first game and I was impressed.

3. I love my club and want to see them play as often as possible.

BUT

I do not agree with this B team thing and will not watch the games that include them.

If I still lived in Grimsby I would attend every home game but would boycott this cup.

BUT

I am living in Suffolk and only get the chance to see us play on a few occasions in a season so I can not sit at home watching boring programmes on the TV when I can watch my team play.

So you decide if I am a scab or not I am not really bothered.

That is exactly the sort of attitude the Premier League wants and believes it will get. You seem to be proving they are winning.

If the competition was dying (evidence? and attendances are lower now) then it wasn't wanted and should have been allowed to die. But no, the Lower League clubs saw a chance of a bit of cash from the PL so allowed them to open the door to 'B' teams a crack. The PL now knows it is just a matter of time and and how big the 'wod of cash' needs to be before they retry the idea of 'B' teams.

You really can't see 'B' teams coming in really? Wow, I think you need to open your eyes. What is the point of this competition of not for that? Developing young English talent? Clearly not. Convoluted rules on who can play and who can't play to suit the Premier League sides.

'B' teams may not be here in the next, two or three years but believe me, the more people like yourself who start to justify to themselves why they are going, the larger the crowds, the more used people get to seeing these games against 'B' teams disguised as U23's. The more accepted it will become. Until eventually the question will be, how much for Grimsby Town's place in the football League to accommodate one of our 'B' teams?

Still... if we make a 'wod of cash' right???

Making a little cash now but what are the long term effects?

It's akin to a drug pusher giving initial freebies out to get customers hooked.

So the PL give a little money out now, they will eventually start to increase it until clubs are making some real money from this competition. So much so that FL clubs start relying on this money to balance their books. The PL then announce the 'B' team idea again further down the line but threaten to pull this new money out if clubs don't agree. The FL clubs being so reliant on this new money are too scared of losing it, so vote to allow 'B' teams.

Well done to those of you who paid to watch either at the ground or ifollow, professing to love your club. This scenario would be your fault, the destruction of lower league football in England.

I can’t believe so called fans are starting to capitulate after our first win, by supporting this event you are sleepwalking into as MarinerMel puts it “ the destruction of lower league football”. Smell the coffee people the money men are already calling this competition a success, in other words we are accepting the B teams as part our league structure. And we all know what the next step is......
wake up they are taking you for idiots.

It's a bit like damned if you do & damned if you don't. I want the club to make money, but i don't want the leagues to change if that really is the plan, though i could never imagine the EFL allowing Premier B teams to join the leagues, who's place would they take ?  what sort of crowds would we take to say Anfield to watch our team play Liverpool reserves/under 21 ? almost none, that idea would kill off the entire EFL structure & all the clubs other than the Premier league ones, that's not a plan anyone would introduce no matter how stupid we think they can be at the EFL.

Bullied? Have a word with yourself.

You’ve just intimated you couldn’t see the link between supporting the competition and the negative long-term impact the competition has on the club.  This despite the exact same conversation taking place on a monthly basis on here for the past 3 years at least.

Nobody’s saying you can’t do what you want, that’s the point, but pleading ignorance is no excuse.

Don't rise to him Garth, it just feeds his need to spout shite and try to relive a his spent youth battling with the police on the picket line..
And for the record, I'm with Pete on this one, all those against this competition are assuming it's the thin of the wedge and will lead to B teams entering the football league...well maybe it is and maybe it's not..but you CANNOT try and force, bully or intimidate someone into doing something they don't believe is right and Pete obviously sees boycotting the competition and not watching his team play a game of football as the wrong thing to do...so, to everyone, share your opinions without directly digging out people..

Ofc we don't know the future but ask yourself the question. Are the Premier League clubs doing this for their benefit or for the benefit of the FL clubs? We already KNOW they want 'B' teams.

The Liverpool 'B' team wouldn't play at Anfield. Probably more likely at Chester or Tranmere. They may even end up taking over these grounds as the lower league clubs struggle and look to make money were they can and the PL gets fatter. Stretching it a bit here but maybe Liverpool 'B' would start to become the main supported team in Chester! It's not impossible. What happens to Chester then?

I don't know why every fornicator is worrying about 'lower league' football teams and the prospect of playing Premiership U21 sides

Didn't Day or Marley or one of the boardroom muppets say we're going to be playing the real teams in the Premiership in 5 years under Jolley?

agreed.

fair play to the scunts who only had 800 odd for their match

disappointing number of crowds were in 4 figures (just) but other highlights include the 724 at Burton, the 639 at macc and big congratulations to Colchester who only attracted 532 fans to their match

Whoah !!  thats actually about their average gate nowadays so fair play nothing

Yes and whilst they have to be in the competition I hope they do win as many as possible. Doesn't mean I will ever go to a game or support the B team idea.

All very well saying how much we could earn from the comp, £10k here, £20k there, but so do most clubs so we're all square, and only the winners and maybe losing finalists will make the kind of money Lincoln did last season. The clue's in the name. Winners.

And it's all chicken feed anyway. As Virgil nearly said, beware of B Teams bearing gifts.

He actually said "there's no reason why we couldn't be" , preceded by something along the lines of "All being well/if things go well...."

Not quite the clear objective that some on here make it out to be.

I want the club to make money, but i don't want the leagues to change if that really is the plan, though i could never imagine the EFL allowing Premier B teams to join the leagues, who's place would they take ?

Well old Trafford and the Etihad will probably expand in a few years so that’s the likes of Rochdale Oldham and Bury af risk, I noticed on the Bury forum some fear a merger in the not to distance future. You can look at any of the big premiership clubs and they are just going to grow and grow.

West Ham have all but killed of the Orient and I won’t be surprised if they never  return to league football. Everton and Liverpool are going to be expanding so that will probably kill Chester’s hope of a league return and damage the gate at Tranmere. I can certainly see clubs folding as their fan base dwindles in the near future or even offered incentives to merge as the big clubs no doubt backed by the FA, and whoever is the England manager in full support and it will be spun for the benefit of the national team.

Exactly. Just like the Premier League was supposed to be good for the national team.

Think (26 years on) we finally got as far as we did in the last World Cup before the Premier League, but this year all the top sides, bar France, were poor. A bit like when Leicester won the League. Except we didn't take our best ever chance of winning the thing unlike the Foxes.

Orient aren't (second) in non league because of West Ham, they're in non league because of a mentalist owner.

The Premier League will never be any good for the National Team while the number of non English players is so high, I think I heard a stat that, at this early stage of the season, the English players in the starting 11's (or squads, I'm not sure?) has fell considerably compared to last year, and is currently below 30%

Good point To be fair although Barry Hearn did predict the Olympic stadium would have a detrimental on the club so that’s where I’m coming from. Surprising but good to see that the Orient’s average attendance hasn’t suffered to much - proper fans,

Spot on! you could argue the foreigners have made the league more exciting (I disagree) but have they made our league stronger - no we dominated Europe in the 70s & 80s with mainly British players.
And has it made our national team any stronger absolutely not - Barring Graham Taylor’s reign I would back any England team from the 80s or 90s to win comfortably against Southgate’s boys.

I don't mind admitting I attended the game on Tuesday having boycotted last season's games.

Due to work and family commitments it was my first time at BP this season, so without any other agenda I just wanted to watch my team.

Do I agree with the competition in its current format? Absolutely not. Do I feel guilty for going? Yes I do a bit.

So what will happen if we progress in the competition? Attendances will increase.

So my point is although we are against the competition. It's very easy to boycott the first round.

So the question I've asked myself is, would I attend if we reached the final? YES I would. So how can I justify boycotting the first round?

Please feel free to ask yourself the same. If you come up with the same answer as me I'll see you at Doncaster next month!

I'm not so sure that will be the case. New manager, new players to watch, a fiver to get in, kids go free and there was still only 600 odd Town fans there on Tuesday night. Jokes about bullying aside, I respect everyone's personal decision as we're all individuals, but I can't see more than a couple of thousand going to Wembley if we got there. It would be the ideal scenario for Town fans to make a real statement and give a big bloody nose to Harvey and the EFL. We've been to Wembley often enough for it not to be too much of a novelty so the boycott will not be forgotten..

Not taking anything away from the Scousers/Forest etc. but to win the European Cup you played a maximum of nine matches with the first round invariably being against the likes of the Champions of Finland/Malta/Iceland.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

Due to location and family commitments I get to 4 or 5 games a year and rarely get to BP (although up for Swindon game in December due to corporate gig as pressie for my 50th birthday), but I have been to every final at Wembley and millennium stadiums. Would I go to this final if we got there? No, absolutely not. It would break my heart a little not to go but in my mind that is much less of a sacrifice than giving the EFL more of an excuse to say that the competition is a success and imho it is just a long term way of trying to get B teams into the EFL.

UTFM and down the EFL

Similar to Posh, I don't get to many games. If there was a B Team Cup game on when I was up in Clee I wouldn't go. If we got to Wembley I still wouldn't go despite it being on the doorstep relatively speaking.
