the negativity has got to stop and yes i agree totally it is having a massive effect on the club.
everyone has to stop thinking we have a right to be at the top of the league this is a big ask but we need everyone pulling in the same direction

If our players can't handle a bit of flack from paying supporters they shouldn't regard themselves as professional. It's all part and parcel of the game. They should get a back bone and actually realise why our fans are as drunk off as they are.

I agree to an extent but after 3 games?? The second home game and they get booed.. They've heard so much about the great support, (I do think it is that most of the time) and seen it preseason but draw at home to nuneaton and they get booed..

You actually asked three questions, so I'll answer them very simply for you.

Quoted from Gary Haddock
Can fans have an impact on players performances?
Possibly but a professional footballer should know how to deal with flack from supporters

Quoted from Gary Haddock
negativity can it put them off?
Possibly but a professional footballer should know how to deal with flack from supporters

Quoted from Gary Haddock
possitivity can it help?
Possibly

So, to answer your question, I'm saying possibly/don't know. Maybe you should set up a poll.

I'm saying yes, apart from money thats the whole idea of playing in front of people. Sport needs an audience, footballs audience is unlike any other sports as far as i can make out.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!

I'd admire that. Because it would show that despite the result you showed pride and wasn't willing to give up and something that should inspire the team.

I think everyone is going over the top here. I can't remember much in the way of abuse during the game, apart from the usual suspects who rant and rave at every game. Most fans around me just sat there shaking their heads in disbelief. Most have gone way beyond anger now and just seem to have given up all hope. In fact, the players seemed to be abusing each other more than the fans did.

If this question has arisen because of Scotts after match comments about the players, then i think he was referring more to the players stage fright and weight of expectation at playing in front of (what is to them) a big crowd and a big ground compared to what they have experienced before in their careers.

We used to be the underdogs and now we are seen as a big scalp by the so called smaller clubs and the players need to step up to the plate and start performing. The crowd will soon get behind them if and when they do.

I remember Bryan Robson, when he was player manager of Middlesbrough saying that they should be doing better against the likes of Grimsby after we had played them off the pitch. The boot is now on the other foot.

there some giving abuse in the pontoon and there was boos at half time, and agree with the most of you say. I'm just as bad as everyone else and just want some one to blame. the negativity got to me I guess.
but this was purely curiousity with some saying fans may be partly to blame so was curious to see what others thought.

Yesterday we could have sung all kinds of positive things: '.... we're by FAR the greatest team the world has ever seen', '...super black and whites, come thrill me again' and so on... and given a resounding cheer each time one of our players passed the ball out of play and a round of applause when they launched it into the stratosphere.  I think I might have enjoyed doing that, just to alleviate the boredom - problem is, the players might think we were taking the ****.

So what you're saying is, don't take the PERFORMANCE or EFFORT into account at all !

Just give them a big pat on the back regardless even if they haven't given 100% or don't even care.
Wow, that's really gonna help keep standards up and avoid "journeymen" !

Don't get me wrong I've often clapped the players off after a defeat if they've put the effort in and it's been a good performance.

But sorry Gary think some of your comments are bordering on utter delusion.
You seem to have no idea what the words "deserved" or "fair" mean.

I wouldn't be suprsed if you're one of these fans I've read saying
"I will cheer the team on even if I have to do it all alone"

(Shakes head bites tongue)

Quoted from Gary Haddock
sensible answers please.

WTF ?!
My god you make aaron rattray look like Princess Diana.

ginny is right this is going way over the top.
You make no attempt to say "small minority of fans" but just say "fans".
If we stereotpye everyone as a potential problem we're in danger of pissing off even the most fair and loyal fans.
Well done !

yeh ok get your points though being abit of knob about it. yes must admit I have done some what would look like stereotyping so sorry for that, and as for cheering better than shouting shite and abusive stuff at players or other fans though A? We pay our money just like you do and yes I am the one who says I'll sing on my own by you mentioning that you proved you had no intentions backing the team before the games even start, and so you think its "fair" to boo a team at half time, you think a player "deserves" to be shouted at by fans and abused then A? they should deal with it it's what they're paid to type of attitude, no! Wrong they aren't paid to be shouted at and abused by fans. And if you don't like what I post don't read it.

in any case knobhead this was pure curiousity I wanted to know if fans really can make a difference what's wrong in that? getting enoyed at the urine taking dickheads now if you can't answer a question don't bother idots! and I thought I was dumb. and as most keep saying "we're entitled to our opinions" so don't go round taking the urine out of the less inteligent posters like myself chickhen shits. haven't anything constructive to say or anything descent then urine off! I'm here for the people who will actually speak propperly and act like adults and have respect and if I'm wrong about something there are ways of going round it with out urine taking. grow a set of balls do it to a person face if your brave enough not with a keyboard.

another tosser, grow up mate no one likes you not even your mother. want to take the urine come ont eh give me your best shot.

My mother has been dead for 20 years. I think she liked me though...

But whilst we are on the subject of taking the p**s can I offer you a couple of words of advice?

1. Brevity is the soul of wit

2. Hurling insults at people who don't happen to appreciate your style, manner or post content says far, far more about you than it does them.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

Gary: you have to earn respect. Bringing someone's mother into a debate and continually calling people knobs etc. can hardly be construed as respectful.

Gary: I don't know you and therefore neither like or dislike you as a person. The post you just quoted was meant as a genuine attempt to help you to stop making a bit of a plonker of yourself. Sorry if that sounds patronising but you are rapidly becoming a figure of fun on here. This will override any good points you happen to make.

Gary: I think you've quoted the wrong post unless you are having a conversation with yourself.

It depends on the content I guess. There are a lot of posts on here that I think are ridiculous. I happen to think all of the posts calling for the heads of our two managers at this early stage of the season fall into this category. However I'm old enough (oh and I'm considerably older than 12-my eldest grandson is 16) to understand that it is a board for opinions of people who support Grimsby Town. It actually takes a lot for me to resort to mickey taking but you've got me to that point. I could just block your posts but then I'd miss something sensible probably.

Quoted from Gary Haddock
as for cheering better than shouting shite and abusive stuff at players or other fans though A? We pay our money just like you do

Why do you assume I'm "one of them" ?
I don't like abuse either but I'm not gonna blame the "fans" because most "fans" are supportive of the team.

Quoted from Gary Haddock
and yes I am the one who says I'll sing on my own by you mentioning that you proved you had no intentions backing the team before the games even start

Completely lost me there !

Quoted from Gary Haddock
and so you think its "fair" to boo a team at half time, you think a player "deserves" to be shouted at by fans and abused then A?

Course I don't.
I think you're just lashing out defensively so won't argue but hope you'll see my point.
It's not a case of condoning (arguably) poor behaviour, it's a case of being careful you don't tar everyone who comes to support the team with the same brush.
If you remember I was the one who made the point fans could perhaps try to give a little more credit when it was deserved.
But there's no point going to extremes and disregarding people's feelings and turning it into an "us and them" situation.

I admire your passion but you've got to respect and accept people who have a slightly different view.
Easier said than done but it's all too easy to think if someone disagrees with you, they must be wrong or think the exact opposite to you.
I know - I've been there myself !

Gaz you've split my sides with that gem, a workmate of mine used to talk to himself in front of the Taliban, we all thought he was doing it to spook them but it turned out he was a bit tapped and was sent on a basket weaving course.  How we laughed at the time but the nutter had over 100 rounds and a full mag fitted with one in the chamber  , ever tried basket weaving Gaz

Gaz, you need to use your fingers instead of mashing the keyboard with your fist or head, I find it the best way to get your point across without looking like a total nut job

Gary no need to put yourself down, be submissive or not have your say.

tbh you're right really - if people don't like it then it's tough titty !

Point is, it's meant to be "debate" and it's all about seeing different viewpoints isn't it ?
Fact you can see others points of view is much credit to you. (there's certainly a few nobheads on here who don't !)

Anyway don't ever feel like you can't post what want.
Just expect to be questioned or challenged over it if you do.
There's a jungle of weird and wonderful opinions out there !
Hope that doesn't sound patronizing, just trying to help...

Wow, there certainly are some sensitive people on here.

It's like treading on egg shells look we all deep down love GTFC otherwise we wouldn't bother coming on here.

I know and everybody else knows we desperately need a win kick start our season off, you can bet your bottom dollar that Fenty,Scott, Hurst and everbody at BP are feeling just as frustrated as we are.

This personal abuse and blame culture is getting us no where.

COME ON PEOPLE OF GRIMSBY WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS!

The boot is now on the other foot.

i don't see what can be achieved by booing the team off at half time when its 0-0 and there's a full 45 minutes to play. although they are professionals and should be able to deal with the excrement fans give them, they are only human and surely the points lost in the previous two games having been in the driving seat in both will have shattered their confidence. However, am all up for letting the team know how we feel at the end whether that be booing because they've been excrement or cheering because they've been great they deserve to get a reaction but booing at half time or during the game helps nobody.

To answer your question... Yes.

Thinking about it, if i was playing football and i had people backing me and cheering me on it'd make me up my game. It'd give me a buzz and make me push that little bit more.
Booing, well that can go one of two ways. It could make a player think intercourse it i'm trying my best and it's not good enough or it could make them think that they'll try prove them wrong. Me, in all honestly, I am the 1st one. If i got boo'ed my performance would drop. Maybe that shows I'm a weak character but from experience it doesn't help my game being boo'ed.

I have long believed my underpants influence the game. Perhaps if more fans paid attention to their undergarments we would see an improvement on the pitch as well.

On Saturday I think I will wear my Paddy Power Lucky Pants. I wore these on the opening day of the season but they have not had an outing since.

yes definitely.I would say most players need to feel wanted by the club and the fans. Its the feeling of being accepted (applys to life as well)that will aid most athletes
