Good to see CV back on the bench and sad to see no DR still.

Continuity looks good though.

The same 3-5-2/5-3-2 which has worked pretty well of late so can't really complain about that. Hope we pass it a bit better this week.

The expectation by some was that he would be back for this game, so his injury must be preet serious.

Sutton winning

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Some half decent approach pllay but zero quality in the final third. Sorely missing Rosey. Honestly already can't see us getting anything from this game.

This is an insipid performance. Our keeper is useless, our midfield are doing nothing with possession and our strikers are just stood around not making runs. Why none of them cleaned any of the Wrexham players out on that counter I have no idea but how's Cannon been allowed to score from that sort of distance and angle?

That's the quality that those Hollywood dollars buys. Players who could be playing in the league above and maybe two leagues from where they play in can do that. Our team looks clumsy and out of ideas in comparison.

3 shots 3 goals

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Goal difference taking a hammering again.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Clinical from Wrexham, Cartwright not having a good game.

Damage limitation from here on in.

Good possession early on but with no end output, they are just in a different class, our crosses just not hitting the spot.

flipping hell, I thought we were past this.

We're losing because our dreadful keeper has let two shots in he should be saving, and we've let a third in because instead of properly clearing a ball we've just hit it straight to a Wrexham player on the edge of the box and it's rebounded to Mullin for a quality finish. We've actually had far the better of possession but we've just got no quality in midfield to capitalise on it.

Same old story i'm afraid. I've not been overly impressed with Wrexham but we are f.....g clueless in the final third. Having said that Wrexham's second goal was a perfect illustration of how to counter attack effectively, a really good goal.

We're very much in this relegation battle. The side don't look up for it, through attitude and a lack of ability. We're getting torn apart every time they break and move forward.

It was a nice move but we were naive enough to let it happen. Countless opportunities to commit a foul as they broke were missed, and then we've let them score from a ridiculous angle because our keeper looks like he's afraid of touching the ball today.

I'm sure the schizo reactions compared to a win or draw will be super negative talking about how the world is now ending and Artell is the devil, we need a new keeper because our resident goalkeeping expert says he should be saving every single shot on goal, etc.

Maybe some perspective is needed on why they are in a battle to finish as league champions and why we are in a battle to not get relegated again. People are acting like this is a game we should be winning when it was always going to be a tough game.

Still getting smashed at home again though, that's the bit I thought we were past after the last few games.

Hopefully we can get back to being solid defensively again over the next few games.

Oddly enough, I think Holohan and Clifton have both passed it and retained possession much better than in the last couple of home games!

We're not creating anything which isn't perhaps surprising given the team contains 2 strikers and 5 defensive midfielders. Forwards have done little, but the service into them has been awful (obviously, the wind is a factor for some of the passes).

Did the first goal deflect a little? I always wonder when a keeper dives past a shot, though it was bouncing and hit well. I thought the second was a good finish, but no idea why none of the defenders went with the run. Third, a poor clearance followed by a lucky deflection straight to the striker. On another day with a better luck, we'd only be a goal down, but no obvious way that we're going to get back into this one.

Holohan's an easy target for criticism as he actually tries to make things happen, opposed to Green who charges around the pitch bundling into people and occasionally manages a five yard pass. We should have realised Hurst had lost his recruitment touch when he made Green his main target of the previous summer window.

We're completing 69% of our passes compared to 55% for Wrexham in the first half. The problem in possession is a lack of movement and creativity in midfield and attack. Our biggest issues today have been in defence and in goal.

its a case of men v's boys out there. or more a case of money v's not much money.

thought there have been a few fouls missed by the ref and some very questionable decisions by the lino!!!

but, you can see the huge gulf in ability and confidence in the 2 sides. were being reliant on the veggies and sutton not getting anything once again today i feel.

Cartwright seems to have lost the abiity to kick a ball today, especially to his own players.

And why is it we only have Doug Tharme who can head a ball?

This club deserves better and we should not be accepting this level of performance. There will be 7000 town fans there today and they were served up this shower.

Don’t think it’s as bad as some other of the other games we’ve been thrashed, there’s just a severe lack of quality in our team.

Our set pieces have been pathetic today.

We really, really need Danny Rose back soon

We need the vegans to lose today and this result won’t be as toxic as it looks on paper. An Accrington goal or two and a Notts winner would also be welcome.

And that is the problem . it's not that we are losing, but the total lack of effort from all of them. You expect your team to put in 100% but this lot just turned up to collect their wages.

I’m not about to lose my shït about this. As someone else said, we’re up against a money team challenging for the title. Of course they’re going to exploit the problems we have and which we all know about. I’m not sure Bradford will.

We’ve improved a lot over the last two months. I’m still hopeful we’ll see it out. Couldn’t see anything other than a loss today though.

We don't have any creativity in midfield. Our previous run of results have come from being solid defensively and nicking scrappy goals. Today we've been poor at the back and our strikers have had zero service and haven't held the ball up well on the rare occasions it has come their way. At least we're no longer playing like we did at Mansfield and conceding about thirty shots a match.

My only real concern is just the damage to the confidence again.. we were just starting to get it together and a bit and now we are being humped. As you say, we were never going to get a result against Wrexham so my expectations were set accordingly but was hoping we would just defend like hell and maybe scrape through a draw. Ho hum.

I struggle to see what these players do all week ?

No plan
No idea's
No threat
No creativity
No hope

F.....g clueless !

I don't think I've ever seen a group of players with a worse first touch than this rabble and a total lack of any plan in the final third.

We are in real trouble !

The reaction is because we have given in timidly, and now are looking over our shoulder at what FGR and Sutton are doing.

Personally I'm angry because the 2023 24 season ended in mid September and all we have been doing is rear-guard fighting just to keep away from the drop zone. What a waste of a year.

We still have a six point cushion, but have a tough game next week. However it sounds like FGR were very poor today so hard to see them getting many points from their next five fixtures.

We had all assumed that Sutton were dead, but they have won their last two so maybe we need to keep an eye on them now.

Rodgers, the only player I have ever seen, tries to avoid a throw in halfway to the halfway line, concedes a corner.

I was hoping for a point. It’s a strange league this. Watched Mansfield V Colchester and thought the home side were poor, given where they are in the table. We need 11 more points to be safe.

Again, another match where the opponents ran faster, were far more accurate with passing, and harrassed our players for 90 minutes, forcing mistakes.

Mullin should have been booked for his "face" injury !!!

Sadly, 2nd best until Arthur came on to give them a bit back - deserved his goal and praise to Harry for a solid game today.

At least Mullins didn't get a penno and Palmer didn't score, so not that bad.

They proved why they are up there, and we're not !

Unimpressed with Wrexham who have some good players but are pretty basic in their style of play. Unfortunately, we let them score with their first shot and didn't play at all well for much of the game, but I still think the scoreline actually flattered them a little!

Obikwu just not experienced enough to get anywhere against their defenders, Wilson too quiet other than that one snapshot and having Pyke as a replacement on the bench is almost a waste of a substitution. It would have been a game made for Rose whose nouse would have won us In lot of possession and free-kicks.

I think we'll need to keep battling it out for the points for the rest of the season because our lack of pace and the poor standard of our general passing can't be improved with the current squad. Big rebuild required in the summer, though hopefully still as a League club.

Agree with this - after today, Sutton have emerged as the main threat. Given they’ve only got 6 games left, you would hope a couple more wins from ourselves would be enough. Sutton would need promotion form over those remaining games to overturn that.

11 points?
Not sure about that.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I think maybe 47 points could be enough. 8 points from 8 games. 6 pointer with Colchester could be massive.

You think either FGR or Sutton are going to average about
2 points per game for the rest of the season? They're not even close to 1 so far.

42 will be enough, I'd not be surprised if we lost every game now and still stay up.

I admire your optimism. I’m not so sure that what you’re averaging in points per game over a season is as relevant as how many you’re acquiring in the current form period , but as I say, the picture will go game by game. If we lose the next two, and at least one of FGR, Sutton or Colchester pick up 4/6 points, then  I’m not sure there’s going to be much solace in your season PPG faith. Every passing round of fixtures brings an effective ‘net result’ that’s bigger than what we do. Yesterday wasn’t terrible in that regard -  one win, one draw and one defeat amongst our rivals, and nobody breathing down our neck. Yet.
Each fixture now has the power to shift the picture and mindsets quite markedly.

Friday - you’d expect Stockport to beat FGR surely, and maybe Salford to beat Sutton. Colchester will see Newport as a juicy win opportunity.

In our hands which is the main thing and I think 5 points from our 3 home games and a draw in at least one of our away fixtures should see us safe but, we have to get those points and I agree lose the next two and it’s panic stations again.

If you look at fgr and suttons run ins .Apply points generously I would say 6 for Sutton and 8 for FGR .All we would need is 1 win .I know sometimes a team fighting for their lives achieve the odd fantastic result but not 3 or 4 in 8 games

Couldn't agree more and just about word for word what our group were saying.

On the Wrexham forum a few of their fans had been saying they hadn't been playing well and they actually didn't create much it was down to our poor quality midfield and defending that they scored 3, as for our likelihood of scoring that didn't look like it till Artell made the changes which we all thought came far too late.

PPG for remaining games based on PPG achieved in last 6 games [form]

Sutton 10/6 = 1.7ppg. Currently 33 points, 6 games left => 33+10 => 43 points
Forest Green 7/6 = 1.2ppg. Currently 33 points, 7 games left => 33+8 => 41 points
Colchester 5/6 [5 draws] = 0.8ppg. Currently 34 points, 9 games left = 34+7 => 41 points - although you think everything being equal they'll get another 3 or 4 more than this.

It's sketchy however you want to look at it but on this basis 42 points would keep us up.

Grimsby 9/6 = 1/5ppg. Currently 39 points, 8 games left => 39+12 => 51 points

What we're watching is of course pretty poor but it's so important to the club and the town we stay up and I'll keep encouraging all our players and not getting on anyone's back from here...

We had 60% possession on Sat but did not use it wisely.

Stockport had 35% possession but still beat MK 5-0!

To be fair, I don't think Wrexham were putting much effort into attacking during the second half. Quite happy to let us pass it backwards and forwards in midfield and in our own half which helped our possession stats. They were coasting and knew it. We knew it too which is why our players apparently set out for damage limitation in the second half and didn't really do much to try and get back into the game until the last 20 minutes or so.

I can understand why we were content to just stop the rot just after half-time, but it would have been better to see us try and attack a bit more than we did.

Yep. Reminded me of the Stockport game. It felt like they could've cranked it up if they wanted/needed to.

The third killed us but it would've taken a huge turnaround anyway. Speaking of the third, what an absolute shambles that was. Mullin was quality, not comparable with our 2 up top.

I hadn’t watched the highlights until just now. The first two Cartwright could have done better, actually I think the second was the poorer from him, it was a tight angle and he didn’t stay big - if he had the shot was would have been within an outstretched arm. The first had a bounce on the way through and he would also have been partly unsighted. But the greater issue for the first was the feeble second ball attempts from our midfield.

The third was a cracking finish tbf.

The second did hit his glove, I could hear it. Seems harsh but gut instinct was that he should've done better. First one was very difficult as it took a massive bounce that you can't really see on the highlights.

He just lost his confidence completely as the first half went on, some of the back passes didn't help mind.

Really good headline tonight on ITV English Football League Highlights for Town.
Despite defeat, it played back the goals from victory 5-4 against Wrexham and did a feature on the local hospital radio - well deserved for the volunteers that have provided commentary for the patients for many years 👏

Needs to do lot of work on his upper body strength the second goal went straight through him.

5 shots on target and three goals. We have to
face facts. The ratio of goals conceded to shots on target has been very high generally for us. Which says really that he doesn’t actually make enough saves. On Saturday I think he should have saved at least one if not both of the first two goals.

I saw some of the Sutton game. Their keeper made some very find saves at a time when they could easily have gone behind.

I just don’t think or keeping options are good enough for a relegation scrap and have definitely cost us points this season.

Yeah I'd agree with this, he's improved at claiming crosses and has odd games were he makes a series of good saves but generally isn't strong enough in this obviously vital area. We are improving him as a keeper which is great for Hull but it's costing us in the immediate I'm afraid. He's better than Eastwood no doubt though so I've no problem with him being picked but it's not a situation that should have arisen
