It seems the commentary is being done from the gantry so it's incredibly windy. Sounds like earthquakes are happening Decent enough quality video though

Is Smith in the Hull squad today??
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Happy with that first quarter, nobody looking out of place. Conteh, Mullarkey n eastwood all done well. Neither side have done too much offensively

I thought we looked pretty good considering Hull are a championship side. I did wonder if these 11 are Hursty's first choice!

Mullarkey has really stood out for me. Hard to belive he came from a relegated team looks like a proper baller, very assured both in defence, moving forward and with the ball at his feet. Defence looks good and first 30 saw a very good press that saw chances created.

1-0 to Hull, pretty poor goal to concede which is a shame as we've looked defensively solid until now. Not really sure what our game plan is for scoring a goal - just seems to be balls into the channels at the moment. Players are probably a bit knackered in fairness.

Poor goal to concede, both wingback just let their men run through unmarked and unchallemged.
Mullarkey let his get the wrong side of him and Glennon was spending too much time trying to claim an offside went it wasn't even close.

About as expected for a friendly so far, sharpness isn't quite there and a lot of new signings in the side so everybody still figuring each other out. Defensively Mullarkey and Rodgers stood out and can see why Hurst signed them with how he wants us to play, pressing up the pitch with ball playing defenders playing out of defense. Apart from one lapse in concentration that led to a goal we looked solid at the back with Eastwood looking alert to danger and assured.
Conteh showed some good touches, his tackle to win the ball back in midfield was brilliant. Looked a little bit lethargic up front with nobody quite on the same page yet, showed some more energy after we conceded a goal, I didn't even notice Vernam until we conceded and he did a really nice cut inside that unfortunately led to nothing as nobody was with him.
Good to get minutes into everybody though and some glimpses of what we have to work with when the season starts. Looks like the second period will feature more players who were together last year so expect them to work together a lot better.

It will not affect the prediction thread today but I thought Hull scored in the 60th Min, whereas Town Twitter gave the 54th Min. I took my time from the clock on the TV. Have I missed something?

I thought the complete opposite of his distribution, looked a bit nervy with shorter passes and reverted to hoofing even when not needed. But his all round game looked good.

Firstly thank you all who advised me about the 6 min break, so it's a 54 min goal. As far as the thread is concerned it's a 120-minute match as, when the thread was originally posted for predictions nobody knew about it being used as 2 - 60 min games. So at the minute, it's 0-1 to Hull which if nobody scores then it will stand as the result.

True, but I'm already thinking Green is going to struggle to get in ahead of conteh. On the other hand Khan for me, has done better than eisa. Couple of nice ,creative passes from hunt, whilst bramwell n braithwaite have done ok

After conceding a goal in the first game it felt like things got a lot more competitive, shame really as now the second game started the foot was taken off the gas and both sides happy to coast along with Hull having the only real chances with one missing a sitter. This Hull team far less competitive than the first set, their second goalkeeper happy to fanny about with the ball since our forward line isn't pressing them. He spent a whole minute moving the ball backwards outside his area while everybody watched him.
Khan looks good like last season, young lads holding their own. Expect another loan for them to gain more experience, they have some good attributes but can see the lack of experience when they have willing runners and choose the simple side pass instead.

2-0 , poor defending think it was bramwell n amos involved in the mix up. Weve lacked creativity in attack, but we are playing a championship team Good finish by wilson to make it 1-1 ,or 1-2, depending on how you see it

FT... 1-1
Not a bad day at the office against higher opposition.

Based on very little, but I've got a good feeling about Wilson this season. Reckon he'll bag a few.

I don't think anybody stood out as impressive in either of our teams. Pauls got a job when the time comes to pick the starting 11

What I saw was a 1st 11 made up of mainly new players. Who pressed high, played some quick pass and move football mixed with some direct balls down the flanks and looked like they wanted to play.
Compared a 2nd 11 mainly made of last seasons squad. Who looked alot more static and relied more on hoof balls as a result, defended alot deeper and didn't look all that bothered about playing with a few exceptions Cartwright and Otis as examples.

Only checked the last 2 pages of this thread and disagree with most. I thought for a pre season game it was good value for money (I even missed the middle part as we went to take the dogs for a walk). I watched the first 40 odd mins and last 50mins and thought we passed it well and times and into dangerous. Seemed confident to do it and most of them paid off. I can't say anyone stood out positively but noone looked awful. I can't even guess what the team will be. I assumed Wilson would be a back up striker but I've like what I've seen of him so far.

The second match was a bit of a snoozefest although Kahn and the two young uns looked decent. First match had more about it, really liked the look of that team with several of the new lads playing decent. Particularly liked the look of Mullarkey, Rogers and Conteh. Eastwood distribution looked fine to me couldn't see an issue there personally.

The young centre half in the second half/game was excellent. Could be a decent player over the coming years. Composed, decent physique and aggressive.

First half team will make up the bulk of the starting XI you’d think. Good depth across the squad now though. Looking forward to seeing a game with something on it in a few weeks!

First game warm down showed who’s fit. Conteh blowing hard, Harry and Evan looked super fit. Efete will struggle to keep a starting spot as Mullarkey looks a real player, same applies to Waterfall regarding Rodgers. Rose will doubtless start but hard to say who the midfield and other attackers will be. I suspect he’ll play two deep and two wide with one behind Rose.

Waterfall...Amos...Green....Braithwaite ...Vernam all disappointed for me. Keepers....thought Eastwood looked more assured/commanding but looked very nervous with the ball at his feet...Cartwright looked better with his feet but not as commanding. Wilson and Eisa looked the livelier of the forward players.
Unusual format game probably disrupted everyone. Hull didn't look like world beaters for the level they are at, no great pace about them.
Bramley the young centre half looked assured, one to watch there.
Mullarkey probably the pick for me.

The only thing I took away from that was that Mullarkey and Rodgers are big improvements on Efete (hate to say it) and Waterfall , if that's their consistent levels of performance .We wanted upgrades and it seems we have really pushed the boat out on a high quality 22 with little beneath that - I suspect we will have a very very good season if we can keep the better players fit for the majority
Last season the quality of the squad overall was more even (worse ) but in terms of numbers we were heavy most of the time , it's definately quality over quantity this time out.
Looking forward to the Wimbledon game .

Not surprising that the newer signings were mainly in the first 11 and looked pretty good compared to the players still here from last season. The aim is to improve the playing squad, which means most of last seasons starters will now be next seasons squad players, and last years squad players have/will be moved on.
Stands to reason.

I thought Mullarkey was excellent and he loves doing the chop. I really like Efete but I think Mullarkey will start the season at RB. The midfield 3 of Khouri, Clifton and Conteh looked very good, offering lots of balance. As for the comments of Conteh blowing, Khouri and Clifton have been under the management of Hurst since December 2020 but I don't see a reason why Conteh won't become as fit as them.

Mullarkey was decent and Wilson looked ok. Didn’t realise Vernam was playing initially, Hunt looked ok, neither keeper looks any better than each other which could be a good thing.
First game or whatever it was had a lot more flow but was chopped down in its tracks.
Have to say that the format ruined what could’ve been decent given the crowd. It felt like a public training session. The result is irrelevant in pre season, we know that, but it just seemed to lack something to engage with.

Pre-season matches are like playing poker for play money...it's the same game but (inevitably) lacks the same excitement.

The laws of the game state that a match must be two equal halves (I’m aware they like to intercourse about with the laws but I reckon we’d have heard about this change). Therefore, Hull actually won 1-0 and 1-1 respectively…
They go through on aggregate…

It seems the commentary is being done from the gantry so it's incredibly windy. Sounds like earthquakes are happening Decent enough quality video though
I enjoyed watching the game on Mariner TV; and although as said it was very windy on the gantry, but the filming etc was excellent; and I don't know his name, but I like the commentator, who I have heard before on replays of games. It must have been hard for him up there identifying all the new players, especially as he said the numbers on the back of the Town players shirts were not very distinctive from that height. Obviously in the first major pre-season game, there were quite a few misplaced passes, but he was never over critical; as I sometimes find JT to be; and I liked his self deprecating humour, which hurts no one. Anyway I saw quite a lot of very encouraging things for the season. UTM .

The club's own John Moore was the commentator and the filming was provided by a streaming company that Hull City chose.

Always loved Johns, and his mates commentary back in the day,
Had some great catchphrases back in the day , I had the VHS/DVS of the Reddy / Jones season review , and he always came out with crackers , I think his co-commentator was his mate Dave (not sure if thats still the case ) 'Reddy is as fast as lighting Dave, it's quicksilver ' 'Now there's interest ' 'Yesss ,ohhh yesss ' 'He's absolutely delighted ' Were a few I remember off the top of my head ,wish I still had the DVD's .

I used to frequent some of Roly's pubs and still have all the old videos and dvds. If I remember correctly John and the rest of the guys joined Roly in the early 80's as the commentary on quite a few of the highlights videos and dvds had Roly and John commentating together.

Although it was only a friendly the sheer pace, fitness and intensity of the first 60 minutes was excellent. I expect many late goals for us this season. The impact of quality subs, more pace and great fitness could be what breaks teams down in the last 20 minutes. I will be backing a few DRAW HT GTFC FT this season.

I really hope we do well but we still look short in every way up front and I know we was against a good opposition although I believe on that showing Hull will struggle to stay in the championship I think we need a target man

I thought the TV coverage was spot on, quick replays and the commentary was, I'm sorry to say, far better than JT.

Regardless of the pre-seasonness of the game, to only lose 2-1 over 120 mins to a championship team is a great result, especially considering the step up in quality from playing clee and borough just beforehand to a tier 2 team. General consensus is we've improved the squad, and bearing in mind we were only a few goals away from being much higher than 11th last season the future is bright. In El General we trust!
