Jersey? Who in their right mind would ever willingly move to Jersey?

Mariner fan here living in Los Angeles for the past 11 years... was living in New York City for 4 years prior to that... but am not an American.  The job is here, and thus so am I.

At least I can go watch the MLS champion LA Galaxy (and pretty boy Beckham) if need be... although to be honest I don't  .  The Home Depot Center ain't got nothin' on Blundell Park!

LOL....wife was living in Jersey at the time. To be honest we lived in a decent part of the state - 30mins from the beach or NYC, so it wasn't all that bad.

Moved to NC since that where she's from originally and has family here.

Haven't been home in 11 years

I lived in New York in the 90s, and there was another Town fan living there at the time. We used to go and watch matches at an Irish pub in midtown on a Saturday morning, full of Chelsea supporting dickheads working on Wall St. There are some beautiful parts to Jersey, I quite liked the faded grandeur of the Jersey shore, reminded me of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire seaside towns.

We had two great guys stay with us for the weekend of the last Wembley game vs MK Dons - a father and son from Seattle - really great guys and passionate about the team - Eric was the son, sorry, forgot the father's name.

Atlantic City in December was very faded but like you I enjoyed it more beacuse of this. Only stayed 1 night but was an interesting if fairly shabby place.

I seem to have bad / good timing with stuff like this as went to Coney Island the day after it had closed down for the season (September time) and it was the one day of my stay when it was really windy and rainy.

Out of season, windswept sea side towns are ace!

EDIT - aware I have just non footied this.

I work in L.A and New York sometimes. Hoping for a transfer one day. When the company will sponsor me.

I would like to visit but wouldn't want to live there. Canada on the other hand looks stunning, if a bit on the nippy side. I always thought it seemed like there were lots of parallels between US & Canada and England & Scotland.

Greetings my fishy friends.
Long time stalker on here, I have to say it's so much better than any of the Imps forums. Born and raised just outside of Lincoln (within spitting distance of the old loony bin) and lifetime LCFC fan from the early 60's and yes even through the dross that comes out of Sincil Bank today. Been in the states for the last 23 years (Maine, Washington DC, Nebraska and now in Richmond Virginia) and just last year became a U.S. citizen. To celebrate I treated myself to a trip to England to watch the mighty Imps against Ebbsfleet and York. Been to Blundell Park many times as a kid and my first memory is "it's bloody cold" and my second is "it's bloody windy". Funnily enough I can't remember City ever winning there.

Hi guys I live in Portland,Maine up in the north eastern corner and if you think it's cold in Grimsby you should try a winter here, usually below freezing most of the winter, enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.Aaron, you say you hate the silly saying that they have over here, well let me tell you a little story.About 6 years ago I was fast asleep at 3.00am and there was a girl outside of our apartment talking loudly on the phone, eventually I got a little bit pi**ed off with it so I opened the window and shouted..."If you don't get off that bloody phone when I get up at 6 for work Iam going to come over to your apartment and KNOCK YOU UP'.meaning I'll wake you up.She rushed back into her apartment and I didn't see her for two weeks. My wife said,I think you'll find that the phrase KNOCK YOU UP  means something completely over here.............Hmm Hmm.Also when I asked for 20 fags in the local store the girl there did not know what the hell I was talking about.I had 19 fags following me home and one of them was on the phone and was heard to say,,,,,,,,Hurry up Larry this guy wants 20 fags and there's only 19 of us so there's a vacancy.lol.
I've been here for 10 years almost ten years and there is NO WAY that I would become an American citizen.........MIND YOU I HAVE CONVERTED MY BROTHER IN LAW TO SAY BONNET AND BOOT AND BUMPER on his car.

I work with Americans and was in a pub in London a few weeks back with them when there was a "soccer game" on TV. They were watching but I spent most of my time on the Sky Sports Centre app on my phone checking on the Town score, away at Barrow.

I did my best to educate them on The Mariners but gave up when one asked, "Do they wait until near the end of the game to score. or will they try at anytime"?

I lived in NYC at the same time, and agree with what you say about NJ -- I really liked "Joisey", and shared a summer beach house there with a great bunch.

I came home 'for the day' to see Town at Wembley in 98, emotional or what.  Lived in Chicago 79/80, and now spend large chunk of each year in LA.

Watching English football - especially England matches--  in NYC bars, usually early morning was a real treat - Guiness and a"Full Irish" (yeah, I know).  Best of all, except for result was World Cup vs Argentina in 1998 in a small bar with, of all people,  the Spice Girls!! Posh Spice stomped out after DB was sent off and through the pub window we saw her make a mobile call -- on the telly we saw him on the bench as he picked up his mobile to answer.

My lovely parents would send me the GT back page every week so I could keep up with the Fall and Rise of the Mariners.    Feels like we're rising again...

It's always fascinated me how people can just up-sticks and root themselves somewhere so far away and unfamiliar (though of course you have the language there at least), far away from loved ones and things you love (watching the might Mariners). Obviously there's much more to life than sticking to what you know and I can't wait to travel as much as possible. Obviously if a great opportunity came up to live abroad I'd almost certainly feel differently, though I couldn't see myself living anywhere else in the States than New England as I love history and historic architecture too much. I'd go for a year; any of you offer free lodge?

Not in the USA but just moved to Calgary Canada (previous 4 years in the Cayman Islands hence Cayman Mariner).

I enjoy living in Canada but it gets bloody cold in Calgary. Its great for the winter sports though and I like the fact that from our apartment I can see the Ski Jump that Eddie the Eagle Edwards made his name on during the Olympics in the 80's.

For the older posters, I used to post on the old Electronic Fishcake as Kiwi Mariner as I was living in New Zealand for a spell.

Great city!  Have they made you a Flames fan yet?  If not, you soon will be... you have no choice, it's a religion. I went to the Heritage Classic (outdoor hockey game in McMahon Stadium) there last February... was cold as intercourse, but it was fun to see the Flames kick the shite out of Montreal.

Not sure if you are a hiker/scrambler/mountaineer, but there are some awesome places to go just west of the city.  Kananaskis Country is nice, and if you climb there is a nice spot just south of Canmore that has some insane sport climbs. Canmore might just be the greatest little place on earth.

Yeah I do love this city and yes I have been to see a few Flames games and Ive enjoyed them and you are spot on with the religion comment.  They've been pretty inconsistent this season though - win one then lose one and looks like they have just missed out on the play-offs.  Sort of reminded me of Town over the last few years so I felt at home I guess.  And of course its always good to see any team with even remote links to the French get a spanking.

Have done loads of hiking since we got out here and there are so many spectacular places to visit, and have just started Cross-Country Skiing out at Canmore.  They have a big Nordic Sports Center there with excellent facilities.

Canmore really is a special place, and of course Banff and Lake Louise are too and are right next door but my favourite place is Lake Minnewanka - or Lake Small Tosser as I like to phrase it.  The name of that place always makes me laugh.

Give me a shout if you're ever back up this way fella and we can grab a couple of beers and chat about the Mariners

Really enjoyed it in Tampa. Massive win in the Casino, then on to St Petersburg for the Dali museum and beaches. I spent a couple of weeks cruising around in a Mustang. Good times.

Like I say, I get to work in the states occasionally, but a permanent move seems out of the question unless the company sponsor me. Or I met a nice American girl, which is far more likely

Yeah I have, my missus best mate is from Toronto and they used to live there so we took a trip down there(if you ever go to Toronto is on the way to Niagra falls) and stopped for a Maccy D's and checked it out.  Was a pretty little town to be fair, some lovely houses and a pretty nice area - none of the locals recognised the Town top though.

That whole area near Burlington and Hamilton was settled by Empire Loyalists and is full of Lincolnshire town and river names -- worked there once and visited a few times, inc Grimsby.

I agree, I'd love to live in New England but not fussed about the rest of the states.

Visited NY, Washington, Orlando and Boston, I love visiting the states, but i couldn't live there permanently. Going back to boston in a few weeks and I want to visit San Diego fairly soon

Now based in reading, do I class as an exile yet?

Mariners fan in Williamsburg Virginia here.  Interesting read on everyone's time spent in the States - whether due to family relations, or job, or just visiting.  I'm a half-breed myself - half Limey and half Yank.  Mom is from Grimsby (WWII war bride); Dad is from Texas - quite the combination if I do say so.  Seaside gal moves to small farm in Texas - it didn't exactly work out so Dad got back in Army and the rest is history.  They live outside of Atlanta Georgia in Jonesboro.  I joined the service (Air Force) and retired in 2006 and settled in Williamsburg.  A ton of English history here - some good (Jamestown and Williamsburg) and some not so good (Yorktown) but a great area if you like the combination of history and the water.  Was posted to Bristol from 90-94 (worked for AF at BAe and RR) and visited relatives in Grimsby and other places as often as I could.  Saw a few matches at Blundell Park - especially remember cup tie versus I beleive Aston Villa in the 92-93 timeframe.  My son was an AV fan so was quite the treat - place was packed - great excitement but Mariners couldn't quite pull it off.  Good memories but now I'm an internet fan - check results all the time.  Not a good showing versus YC today but with injuries, player cup-ties, and the suspension, things will get back to 'normal' quick enough.  Let's Go Mariners - back to the League!

^ not too far from me really - just a couple of hours

Been her 12 years now and enjoying it a great deal. Only miss the pub and Town, plus famly & friend but not homesick. Been 11 years since I've been home.

Last visit at Blundell Park was against Palace when we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2
