Just had some Conservative folks doing the rounds locally handing out flyers and sounding out the vote which reminds me that we must have a general election between now and mid-May.

So, we this in mind how would you vote? I've listed the declared candidates for the constituency of Great Grimsby; remaining parties who may or may not provide a candidate can be chosen under other. If you don't live in GG you can still vote; just pretend you live here.

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play.
It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfullness,
disregard of all rules and a sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence;
In other words it is war without the shooting.

Austin Mitchell isn't such a bad MP, and he's prepared to stick by his own opinion, but voting Labour again is just a no-no because they've copulated this country almost into bankruptcy.

DeFreitas has done something similar on a local scale, so it has to be Tory or not at all.

The only time I can recall seeing Mitchell in my area is at election time. Otherwise I only see him on the TV when he's talking about anything but Grimsby.

I'm a lifelong socialist so i'm screwed. The Labour party are too far to the right for me and Brown is a walking disaster.I'm not sure about the theory that Labour have ruined the country. Most western countries are struggling at the mo and i can still vividly remember the state of things when the Tories were in.I would never ever vote Tory and the Lib Dems are a waste of space.

Maybe the Greens if they stand.

(P.S.I live in Cleethorpes and my Labour candidate is Shona the moaner)

What is interesting in this totally and utterly unscientific poll is that, after eight votes and remember that this is just a bit of fun, the Conservative Party stand their best chance of winning Great Grimsby since the end of the Second World War.

What is more this kind of support for the Conservative Party hasn't been seen in the town since the Whig candidate was revealed as a drug-addled bankrupt transvestite and that was in 1833!

Back to the studio.

We have a pretty pisspoor government at the moment but I really do not want to see that fruit David Cameron as our PM, I'm hoping for a hung parliament.

Amazing. We have 12 votes now and 50% of them are for the Conservatives. If this was projected onto the national vote, and remember this is just a bit of fun, it would mean that the Tories have a majority of over 2 million seats out of a possible 625. This is a record. Either that or my BBC Acorn is fucked.

And we're getting news that Muchwanking-in-the-Wolds, a traditional Tory seat that went to Labour in '97, again in 2001 and in 2005 albeit with a much reduced majority has been won by the RAC.

Which goes to show my computer truly is fucked. Back to the studio.

Would you be a hypocrite if you voted to abolish voting

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

Definately Mr Mitchell for me, I attended a meeting with this Con Ayling, who claims to be a Local mum, she lives bloody miles away, hadnt even heard of where I live, and I also got a leaflet of her saying she worked in the Fishing Industry, when asked by a member of the audience, she actually worked for a cod liver oil company, I personally think the womans a hypocrite, so for all his faults Mr Mitchell will still be getting my X.

But what has Mitchell done for Grimsby in the last decade? I guess it does go to show that you can put a red rosette on a hat stand in this area and people will vote for it.

By all means follow party lines but it would be nice to have someone new who has fresh ideas and something to prove. Maybe time the local PLP put forward a new candidate instead of the same old, same old.

Mitchell has presided over decades of decline in the Town, yet he still gets the vote; things might change this time though.

Traditionally, Grimsby has been a working class town, but that's quickly changing. Grimsby is fast becoming an unemployed class town. Where working class vote labour, the unemployed vote BNP.

With a high profile campaign by Nick Griffin and the likes of BNP Vicar as his stooge, maybe we can expect a little shock for the seat of Great Grimsby come 2010.

The media have alraedy choosen the Conservatives to win by a large margin, look at what The Sun did today.  It is time for the money-go-round to change direction for a while, the people who really run the country will see to that.  Trust a Dog, we know what is going on.

I hate to point it out but when Mitchell first came to Grimsby he was an outsider. He came from Yorkshire (in fact given the books he still writes I don't think he actually realises he's left it) and like all prospective candidates he tried to create a link with the area (I think he once covered a story about missing cats on the Wybers for Calendar or somesuch).

And as for his Labour predecessor Tony Crosland we was a second choice constituency for him! I don't care if prospective candidates are local or not so long as they do something for us and I think Mitchell switched off years ago.

In some ways that's a pity really. Great Grimsby is traditionally a solid Labour seat and has been since the war (although the Tories came very, very close to winning in 1983) and it is hard to see that changing which probably explains why Mitchell does what he does(n't).

Whilst a Tory win in the town is not totally ruled out (see 1983) if the voters were to desire a change or even make a protest vote the natural home in GG for such action are the Liberal Democrats. Sadly, their candidate is Andrew DeFreitas. D'oh!

I kind of do, I mean Austin cant be accused of being a career politician, who is only using Grimsby to get into Parliment, and although I hate everything New Labour, I like how Austin quite often votes against the whips.

Yep  maybe I should, but If I had to meet everyone I had to form an opinion about, what a dull world it would be, as I said that was a personal opinion, No I havent met the guy, but Ive heard him speak enough to form an opinion however valid/invalid it may be.

You're quite right. You don't have to meet someone to form an opinion about them. I've never met Gordon Brown but I've seen and heard enough of him in the media to form an opinion that whilst he is very clever, he is not very personable, appears very cold and appears reluctant to listen to advice.

I am surprised by the description of Cameron as a 'smug, arrogant bastard' and wonder what that is based on. To me he appears neither smug or arrogant and I wonder whether such a description is borne out of the prejudice of inverted snobbery, in that someone who was born into money and had a private education is therefore automatically smug and arrogant.

To me he appears neither smug or arrogant and I wonder whether such a description is borne out of the prejudice of inverted snobbery, in that someone who was born into money and had a private education is therefore automatically smug and arrogant.

i spend alot of time working in london, mainly in the fulham, notting hill, chelsea type areas basically the very rich areas and trust me these people who live here have no thought or care about the north and normally harp on how there taxes fund our council houses, now maybe cameron is a exception but i strongly think hes just a good PR man who cleverly is telling the masses what they want to hear without any real substance to it.brown on the other hand is a man steeped in political history but is main problem is he cant warm to the public like blair did and so therefoe will be voted out in may next year.so in short the so called higher classes of london are smug are arrogant and believe me a tory government isnt the answer to gys problems as we will all found out soon enough

Then I can only assume we are all fucked then because after 12 years it is plainly obvious Labour has done little for the town. The problem is that NO major political party will do anything for towns like Grimsby.

A Labour government is not interested in Grimsby because it is a staunchly Labour seat and therefore they have very little to do to entice people to do vote for them. As I said before, hat stand and red rosette spring to mind.

Secondly a Conservative government will care little for Grimsby because it is not a seat they percieve to have a cat in hell's chance of winning (see above) and therefore they won't expend the energy trying to curry favour with the local electorate.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

And that's the sad part.Funding that we need decided on where we sit on the political spectrum. Not marginal enough to curry favour and that's the reason most politicians are not trusted.Every decision they make is for their own political ends with scant regard as to what is good for the country.

Cameron is a charlatan. He couldn't give a toss about people like us.

Brown has no charisma, which is why he will lose the next election.

the amount sheffield city centre has changed is literally beyond belief and isn't a bad place to live, they've made a lot of the main shopping area pedestrian only and just improved it no end

i think it's what our council is trying to emulate, especially with victoria street in town, but i just can't see it happening

I don't know yet.  I'd be tempted to shoot the lot of them.  If I vote for anyone it will probably be someone obscure.  Wasted vote but couldn't bring myself to vote for the two main ones.  It goes without saying that I will not vote for the BNP either.  I may well vote for the party that is most opposed to them.

I wonder how the BNP vote will be effected should they allow membership to non-whites as is being discussed at the moment.

They don't have a choice do they?

Not allowing non-whites is illegal.

You've obviously never been north of the border! The things that we have free, are governed by our devolved goverment - care for the elderly etc. The kind of things that a civilised society does.

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

Yes, and all paid for by the English taxpayer. 55 million people subsidising 6 million - can't be bad.

I have been north of the border many times and to many places but not by choice (Armed forces) but you are missing the point, we, the English have no choice in Devolution and your Scottish MP,s are free to vote on English matters in the Commons which is utter bloody madness, I really wish that Scotland would become totally independent of the UK and have to provide for themselves (Like Eire). We,the English, Would still give you RNLI lifeboats for free as we still do in The Republic of Ireland but that would be about all you would get.
