Didn’t that coincide with Richard Hughes as well who was so calm. I always think that if we’d have kept Oster and Hughes for the remainder of that season we’d have stayed up and perhaps a lot of what happened very quickly afterwards may not have!

I liked Appleton too if I am thinking of central midfield loans!

Hughes was later in the season, think there might have been a handful of games cross-over with Oster's second loan spell.

Said on another thread last week about how we fell off the cliff once Oster left.  But over the course of the season we had some very good players either contracted, short-term, out injured or on loan.  It was just a shame they didn't all play together for a sustained period.

That’s frighteningly true when you look back at who featured at some point that season.

Coyne

McDermott     Santos     Groves     Gallimore

Oster     Pouton     Hughes     Campbell

Kabba     Boulding

We’d have been nowhere near trouble that season if we’d have been able to consistently put a side close to that out. Alas, we couldn’t. In particular, it’s a real shame Kabba and Oster only got one game together (in which they linked up to make the opening goal)

A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner.

But then the contrast is 18-year-old Darren Mansaram started nearly half the season as a lone striker, often in a midfield that lacked a real creative spark.  Just seventeen months after starting back-to-back games against very soon to be promoted to the Prem Leicester and Wolves, he was loaned out to Halifax of the Conference National.  Mansaram started both of those games up front on his own.  For Leicester he did have John Oster supporting from a bit deeper, however against Wolves he was ahead of a very defensive midfield of Chris Bolder, Richard Hughes, Paul Groves, Stuart Campbell and Michael Keane.

The lack of attacking options in the big spell between Kabba and Boulding was painful, even when they were were they were fighting a lone battle.
Jevons was farmed out on loan, Rowan had gone off the boil, Livvo (who started nearly as many games as Mansaram) was understandably a pale shadow of his former self after his head injury, Chris Thompson didn't quite reach expectations, David Soames couldn't stay fit...

It really was a cheapo squad.  You can add Chettle, Barnard, Cooke and Colidcott to your XI but after that it's almost exclusively kids and loans.  Even Simon Ford, who played nearly all the season was 21/22.

           Pond Todd Townsend
                     Pouton
              Woods Oster
     Paterson Mendonca Kabba

Bit of a weird formation but so confident with that loanee team that I've only bothered with 10 players.
