Apart from the enforced change at the back and those recovering from injury it is nice to see minimum changes to the Wimbledon game. Let's hope we can start finding a good rhythm.

4-2-3-1, innit?
Interesting to see Hurst bunging a keeper on the bench. Have the regulations changed in some way, or does this indicate that none of the defenders is as capable in goal as Pearson?

Unlikely, we don't play 4-4-2 at home, so doubtful we we play it away.

They definitely don't play 442 lol. 4231 or something like that despite what the telly might show you pre match, formations are dynamic these days with some teams not employing any out and out strikers because the formation changes in possession and out of it, Brighton have an attacking midfield that tucks into forward roles.

Hopefully by sending off yet another County player this season.

|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

We're very lucky to be going in ahead and fortunate that Notts County's defence is like a sieve. McGoldrick and Langstaff have fluffed some great opportunities for them and we can't keep sitting back and letting them have 75%+ possession. The amount of times they've just floated it over Glennon or Efete's (who definitely isn't a left back) head to their quick winger is ridiculous. Very good finishes from Rose and Clifton when they were in on goal though and a lovely assist from Mullarkey for our second. Eisa, Hunt, Vernam and Conteh really need to pull their fingers out and get in the game.

No idea how we are winning that. They look woeful at the back and we didnt capatilise on it when going in front. I hate this system we keep playing never having enough players/options when we get in the box as oppose to County. Harry had been awful until he took his goal well. Seems churlish to moan when were winning but this aint finished yet by a long way.

Tough half of football that and - although happy about it - we’re lucky to go in at half time with a lead.
Clifton doesn’t look the same player as last season. We haven’t quite seen it in consistent motion but I think the attackers we’ve brought in are a bit quicker in thought than last season and I have a feeling Harry might be a little behind the wavelength now. Only marginally but he doesn’t seem to be quite in the mix in the way he was last season, it’s almost like he’s a yard behind what’s going on.
Frustrating that we keep misplacing so many passes and as the game has gone on we’ve resorted to more long balls too. Hope we can try to be more in the game with the ball when we have it.
As for the score line, I think Notts will feel hard done by. They keep ball and try to play which comes with risk, they don’t rush but this has led to a few errors that have allowed us in and we’ve taken them. At some point their style of football will come good (hopefully not in the next 45 minutes), but they certainly play good football. Crowley, Jones, McGoldrick and Nemane look very good and they’ll score lots of goals.
If we could guarantee the score line now with knowledge we’ll be under the cosh of course we’d take it (stupid not to), but as that can’t happen, I’m hopeful that we can threaten a little more and feel like we’re not just awaiting a County goal.

This is typical Hurst so far , we are doing a job on them lets hope it can be completed.
They play pretty football but it's not always effective at this level and they have a dire defence .
Danny Rose is a sharp object in a good way now we have one

Haha, most Scunny fans said they would win easily. Sorry, that's probably an exaggeration, I should have said most comments I saw said they would win easily. Same as I have seen a lot of comments that they would walk this league.

Nothing much has changed has it? It's really quite tedious watching Paul Hurst teams. Was hoping for something a bit better this season but I've seen nothing at all to get excited about. Yawnsville. Conteh MOM.

Anybody abd i mean Anybody who thinks we're any better than last season may need to rethink that... That's 3 games where the opposition have completely out classed us. Don't care what people say, yes we passed the ball about nice last Saturday but was never going to score if we'd played for 3 hours!.. Our balls into the box are embarrassingly bad, time n time again Notts crossed into our box, our defenders put on their backsides, nut megged.. Love Konteh btw, absolutely oozed class, but we'll be lucky to finish mid table this year, something needs to click and quick if we are going to start to dominate games and get some wins on the board..

Glad I never hot caught up in the wave of we are going to do well this season. What a load of crap we are again. Hurst needs to stop messing with so called strikers and get a proper no 9 in or Hurst out

We’ve lost a premier league striker and a championship defender - on that basis we’re weaker than last season.

It was dreadful against a poor county defence. PH has got it too easy and needs to be put under serious pressure imo . They did not run through walls for him today at all and our bench is shocking. Lincoln showed us the way but we turned left instead of right . The FA cup money is gone and we look no better than that 1st season back under Fenty . That a worry for me .

Was always going to be a hard start to the season, but would have thought we’d have got 3 points from the first 2 games. A lot of work to do, but on the positive side, at least we scored
Why such a hard start to the season?, Our first two league games were against a team that finished fourth from bottom last season and against a team that was in the league below us and who got smashed last week.

Vernam's been appalling since returning. Shown absolutely nothing in preseason or the first three competitive matches yet seems to be a nailed on starter. Needs dropping and a boot up the bottom because he's just coasting through matches right now.

Did we play with one striker?
Yes Rose on his own with Eisa and Vernam out wide. Then it was Rose on his own with Harry and Vernam out wide with Eisa behind him in the 10 And lastly Pike on his own, with Rose and Harry wide and Eisa in the 10

Major take aways from that are that it’s clear Hurst has set the team up to include Eisa and Vernam. Unfortunately we seem to have been sold duds because both have been ineffective and anonymous.
There doesn’t seem to be an obvious shape or pattern of play when we attack and that was against what I suspect will be one of the weaker defences in this league. Movement is non existent but to not even have an obvious shape to get some sort of cohesion is criminal.
We also desperately need a new left back.

Unfortunately i agree and Eisa is exactly the same. To be fair to gnourah he lacks a pre season but hasn't looked any different to those two when coming on. People moaning about clifton but he at least tries to make things happen, doesn't always come off but he impacts games - scored one and a beauty of a cross that rose so nearly buried. Of the 3 behind rose he is the only one of any use at the moment. Embarrassing that all the money has been spent and we're reduced to sticking waterfall up front and lumping it up to him. We never did that when we had less money in NL or last season - we've definitely dropped a clanger with the lack of a target man. Perhaps it's vernam and eisa not getting to grips with this system of 3 behind 1 striker and a different formation would see them improve. I can never recall a Hurst side making 1 up front working consistently we always end up leaving him isolated and so far looks no different. I think we're pretty solid at the back and we won't play teams as good going forward as county every week but we have to offer more in the final third if we are to hope to challenge.

I am amazed how much that Glennon has dropped in form.
Teams must line up their quickest player on their right flank to get an easy game !!
Conteh is showing others how to play in most instances - look for a player and make a simple pass to him.
Not rocket science, but we seem to make it so hard with a lack of showing for passes and bad slow passing that allows challenges.
First 15 to 20 minutes were good, but Town just seemed to drop off and allow County to step up and take control.
Last thought - is Amos injured or just out of favour?

Going to be a long season. I never got why everyone was so optimistic based on what?
I think it was because this data malarkey thought some of the players brought in were worth 3 year deals, and we paid money for some, and to be fair some on paper at least looked good signings. I get your point though, people were way too optimistic before they had seen the players in action. I think they are technically good players but I think it is more with their preparation; what system and style of play are we trying to cultivate?

My thoughts so far One thing of note is that of of the few of last years team who have started Glennon and Hunt have been shocking and Clifton is well below the level we have been used to Of the new players so far I only see much in Conteh and Rogers . Rose may be an ok the rest don’t seem to be an upgrade. The new team also shows signs of lacking the resilience that got us through adversity where ability was lacking in the old team

I’m the same - didn’t go today but thought he did alright last Saturday, and caused the opposition issues, although with hindsight we do need him to do a bit more.

"I am amazed how much that Glennon has dropped in form.

The problem on the left flank is pretty obvious imo - Glennon is a frustrated winger with Vernam on the same side and both of them are suffering due to confusion over their roles which is leaving that side of the pitch wide open to be plundered as witnessed today. As for the left back position (without wingback duties) Amos is far better suited and should he be played that would then let everyone see just how good Vernam can be (hopefully). I firmly believe that Amos is a more accurate passer of the ball compared to Glennon who has a tendency to spray hopeful balls around indiscriminately. Not so long ago we were getting regular headed goals from our defenders due to accurate passes from the left wing but this feature seems to have disappeared from our armoury. Time to look back at the basics 'cos the new boys are not the magicians that most fans hoped for.

I'm not overly convinced by either Glennon or Amos, truth be told. Amos a bit quicker, but not the strongest, Glennon has reasonable delivery from set pieces, but is lacking in pace.
For right-back, I think Mullarkey looks a better footballer than Efete, but is he a better defender overall? Not at all convinced that this is the case. It's difficult for a tall guy to do well at full-back as nippy wingers tend to be shorter and therefore quicker off the mark and half a yard is all you need to put in a decent cross.

I stood behind Glennon’s family at Rochdale last season (tight perms and moustaches gave them away). Hurst brought Amos on and pushed Glennon forward into left mid and they were visibly ecstatic with that decision. He got the assist for the winner. I don’t think he’s crap but I do think he’s being misused.

I honestly think we have some cracking footballers in this team. But the system just isn't working. I'd love to see 532. I'm not expert but something along the lines of ... Eastwood Mullarkey Waterfall maher Rodgers glenoon Hunt conteh clifton Rose Wilson
I know some are injured or out of form but if everyone's is fit and well, from what I've seen so far, this is what I'd go with. Wilson admittedly I've only seen once but that 1 time I feel he offered more of a goal threat than the others available, although I do like Eisa and think he will come good.

From what I've seen so far, I tend to agree that 3-5-2/5-3-2 is likely to get the best out of what we've got.
Neither Mullarkey or Glennon are the best defensively but are decent going forward, so a 3-5-2 would give them better insurance defensively. Efete could play on the right side of central defence, whilst Maher is injured. Vernam and Eisa don't convince me at all, so they could be dropped, plus I'd like to see 2 up front.
I'd also replace Hunt with Holohan, so that Conteh can sit, and Holohan and Clifton can get forward and support attacks.

532 with the current squad would be horrible. Mullarkey is a CB who does a decent job at right back but he wouldn’t be able to offer an attacking threat on his own down that side. Glennon is too slow and his form has deteriorated completely. County showed how to do it yesterday with quick, skilful players out wide starting high up the pitch offering a threat in behind or when the ball goes to feet. Neither Mullarkey or Glennon are capable of taking on the opposition or getting them turned by running on to a ball behind so we’d end up with a flat back five.
Most of our midfielders aren’t good enough on the ball to effectively play through the middle quickly either. Conteh appears to be able to and Hunt can when given time and space (which is less available in L2) but the others can’t. So we’d have no width going forward and struggle to get the ball through the middle. It’s also quite reliant on all of your centre backs being very comfortable on the ball if you’re going to play it through the middle, I don’t think Waterfall is capable of that (not a criticism, just an observation). We’d end up hitting long balls in to the front two and hoping something comes from that. And even then we’d struggle a bit cause none of the strikers we have are classic hold up players.

In hindsight that would have been a better experiment for the Mansfield cup game than the awful shape we endured on Tuesday. We are failing to get the best out of Rose, willing though he is, by expecting him to execute a one man press, run the channels and get on the end of a meagre supply of crosses. Rose could be our hero but we have let him down so far. At Stevenage he had a free role to feast off knock downs from big lumps and a barrage of crosses.

I think Glennon is a good player but not a good left back .When he plays wing back his excellent delivery and tracking back greatly assist tge team .At LB he's rightly targeted by the opposition if Maher plays its not so noticeable cos he goes across to help .Yesterday it was a huge problem from kick off and PH rightly brought Efete on BUT he should have started with Glenn's LM and Harry where Eisa was he had a lazy performance and band offers nothing I can see? We badly need Khan back .

Glennon isnt a left midfield player. He’s a left full back and he isnt a good one. We were targeted on our left by sides last season and its been no different so far this Agree with you about Khan who i really like

Conteh and Hunt are both terrific footballers who will create loads this season. Binning off players after two games against good opposition is frankly ridiculous. There’s a whole new set of players bedding in and I’m pretty sure the manager will work out a style to suit. Reflecting on his post match interview, he said he was a lot happier than he was on Tuesday night. I’m pretty sure that means we’re heading in the right direction.

I think thats a bit OTT on Hunt. But for a very good 3 months of his initial loan spell, I fail to see what he’s done to give you that impression

I think Conteh has shown that he can play the ball out from the back, so we don't need Hunt doing that as well, and quite frankly he's not offering a great deal going forwards either. He also has a tendency to give the ball away in dangerous areas and to play balls into players feet who are surrounded by opposition players and again we squander possession in dangerous areas due to this (I think he's used to playing with players with more technical ability than most league two players possess, who can handle the ball in tight areas). Hunt definitely has great technical abilities, but I just don't think he's suited to League Two football.

I disagree, I think Glennon's assist stats were quite high last year - hence there were rumours of bigger clubs sniffing around for him (if only this would come true). Although I've seen less of Mullarkey, from what I've seen he looks decent going foward but a bit suspect defensively. At the end of the day Its not rocket science is it: Keeper to Conteh Conteh to Wide players Wide Players get a cross in Score directly from cross OR clifton/holohan on the follow up urine easy

If we are going to do 3-5-2/5-3-2 I think Mullarkey would be much better as a right sided centre back which could see him bomb forward abit like Reece Hall Johnson did for us.

We effectively had only 4 attacking players yesterdays cos Vernam and Eisa were utterly awful - they offered nothing Pretty hard to win a game with two of your 'match winners' completely off the pace
Notts County played terrific football with a very regimented style that also allowed great creativity and freedom for players to express themselves
When we got the ball too often (as per last season) we either gave it away cheaply or lacked any ideas/craft/final ball
Rose was excellent; Clifton awful first half but much better 2nd; Conteh is a real player; Hunt in and out
Our defence will be no better or worse than any other in L2 - it's the final third where we have to improve hugely to even think about the play offs

I think thats a bit OTT on Hunt. But for a very good 3 months of his initial loan spell, I fail to see what he’s done to give you that impression
Might be that he was voted MoM a week ago if my short term memory hasn’t served me wrong.

By the sponsors. In a game he wasn’t close to being MOM in.

All about opinions, isn't it? I'm not saying he was or wasn't but we've looked a lot better side in the games he's played this season than the one he didn't.

I just dont feel he’s the answer, don’t think he’s shown anywhere near enough considering we paid a fee and gave him a 3 year deal But as you say, all about opinions

Your point about the County wide men receiving the ball high up the pitch is something I mentioned a few times last season, or rather that is exactly what we don't do. We have to play several passes just to get out of our own half before we can mount a serious attack but with the best will in the world, you have to be awfully good to construct a move deep inside your own half resulting in a worthwhile effort on goal. If we have no target man and our wide men aren't already up the pitch to go straight on the attack what is the plan?

I feel Hunt and Conteh could be very good but as others have pointed out Hunt currently is playing too deep and I would like him to be receiving the ball ten yards further forward and trust Conteh to protect the defence. I would also like them have Khouri on the left as it’s his natural position and I think he would complement them better than Harry does at present. Other posters have also commented on how neither Eisa or Vernam actually attack their man and try to beat them, is this by instruction, fear of losing the ball or just not capable? Their two wide guys looked a threat every time they got the ball, particularly in the first half, and reminded me of those wonderful run of matches when we had Sousa and Bopaga bombing forwards. I definitely feel we need someone playing much closer to Rose and in his two cameos to date Pyke has not done anything which makes me feel he’s the answer but I accept it’s early days and he’s recovering from an injury. Not seen Wilson play yet so could he be the answer or do we need to bring in another forward?

The problem is both Hunt and Content are operating in the same area of the pitch. There's no link between them and the attacking four who tend to stick to their positions than provide movement, for example to come deep and link up play. It's a very rigid Hurst approach.

This is a great point. But it goes back to the Glennon situation. Whoever is playing on the wide left is having to play too deep to protect him and we therefore don't get high enough to support Rose nor do we have an out ball for Vernam or Eisa to chase or turn the opposition full back round. Does Hurst not trust Glennon or Amos and therefore sets up too negatively? With the personnel we've got, we'd be better off with wing backs.

I think people got programmed to think Hunt is a good footballer because that’s what social media has told them. The evidence in the form of impact on games doesn’t support it. He needs too much time and space to get passes away to be effective in the EFL.

That was McGoldricks role yesterday collect the ball in deep lying central position and pass it out to the two wide men . Nothing flash simple and effective

Playing his heart out for his hometown club at 35 years young. Player of the year at Sheffield United 2018-2019, Player of the Year at Derby last year (25 goals in 45 games). He strolled around finding space to receive the ball and hardly ever wasted it. Class performance and slotted into an already settled squad. It was always going to be a difficult game for us trying to bed so many players in in one go.
