How long do we have these two signed up for?
I would get them on longer deals as they are both class acts and the vultures will be circling after today

Got to admit that I feared for McAtee when he stood on the ball. That looked painful.
McAtee wasn't on top form today but that goal lifted him and the team. I really like Maguire-Drew though. He's going to have games where he's very quiet but he's proving that he can create something out of nothing. Excellent technique for his goal and unlike Sousa on the opposite flank, he's not afraid to use his weaker foot.
Both under contract until May 2023.

I think he showed a lot of his “usual standards” in terms of work rate, chasing down, not giving up and an excellent goal. In terms of chasing down he made a great contribution for the JMD goal.

Does it matter if they played poor to their standards? Two quality finishes like that which won us the game? Play below there standards like that every week if they can still produce goals.

Apart from scoring the goal of the season, which made them have to come out and leave more space behind them for us to exploit. Apart form that, yeah.

Not everything came off for McAtee today but his work ethic lifts the whole team. If he hadn't scored the goal we would still have been miles more effective, through his endeavour, in linking midfield and attack. JMD has made a fool of me twice in these last two home games by scoring great goals after I have loudly announced to Row G that he should be subbed!

Wow so in the second conversation about football in one week you've decided to throw my vaccine status at me as some sort of moral high ground? Despite my vaccine status being based on my disability? And you have the nerve to call other posters patronising? Good going bud.

Wasn't meant to be patronising. Was actually a bit tongue in cheek in my head but the written word is open to interpretation when it's without tone and inflection. Think we can all agree that he scored one of the best goals seen at BP for many a moon and he earned his corn today.

Funny how we all see things different, i thought they both put in a good shift today. Granted not everything came off for them that's why they are playing where they are
Can't remember which one of our many managers used to go on about rough diamonds but these two could given time become the polished article and we don't want to lose them for next to nothing like we have in the past

Think Hagrid failed to support his comments with examples but I believe he was probably referring to the fact that, particularly in the first half, McAtee gave the ball away an awful lot of times and seemed very hurried in everything he did. That said he never stopped wanting the ball, never stopped harassing the opposition and of course scored that beautiful goal. He probably tried a little too hard first half to effect the game in a positive manner but he’s that type of player and when the instinctive quick passes don’t come off we obviously lose possession.
The structure of the front players provides a problem with Sousa being able to beat players seemingly at will on occasions but he’s poor in front of goal and doesn’t put in enough balls of the quality we witnessed from Wright when he came on. Then there’s Taylor excellent in his link up play, fully committed but he doesn’t get on the end of enough of the crosses or get enough of the tap ins he scored against Southend. But if he were replaced with an out and out striker his contribution in our build up play would leave a massive hole so if a striker were signed who would he replace?
Special mention to Coke today who had an excellent game and my post has to mention Pearson’s 70 yard forward run beating two or three of their players on the way. If only that could have led to a goal !!

Either player would be at a higher level if they had either, in McAtee’s case, a bit more composure or, in JMD’s case, more pace. They haven’t. But, at this level, they’re both very good footballers.

They could be a real handful if we can keep them both fit & firing for a couple of months.

McAtee is probably a couple of games from being match fit as is JMD. Exciting if these 2 can forge an understanding, and with Taylor too. If we sign a new striker who drops out, very unlikely we play 2 up top..nobody does that now.

He’s getting peppered with red crosses here, but I think young Haggers has a semblance of a fair point. I thought in the first-half McAtee looked a little bit out of sorts, just not quite bombing around the pitch and dictating play as we know he can do so well. The rest is history of course, and he had the audacity to score the best Town goal I can remember for some time while I was still in the Trust bar. Both he and Town were a different spectacle after that, and it transitioned from a frustrating first-half into an enjoyable second. He’s a class act and without doubt our talisman and clearly someone even the players to look for inspiration, but I don’t think it’s totally unfair to suggest he wasn’t quite at his tip-top best in the early part of the game today, though he atoned for that and then some with his goal and sheer determination after the break.

My thoughts exactly. Given his ability, he could do with not over playing and to use the undoubted talents of those around him.

I think Mcatee was poor first half but second half he dug in and I guess you expect your better players rondo what he did and pull something out of the bag which turned the game.
Maguire-drew has improved game on game. At Dagenham he looked like a fish out of water but he’s dug in and shown he’s worth something and again, his finish was excellent, helped out by Mcatee and Fox putting pressure on the oppo…

I remember PH first interview after signing Maguire Drew when he said that he wasn’t as fit as they would like. This is clearly improving as is his involvement.

Different positions and I’m not making a comparison but when Nolan came here his first few games where patchy due to lack of fitness then he hit his straps and made a real difference, fingers crossed JMD will take the same pattern. In terms of McAtee I wonder how long it will be before people from bigger clubs start looking at him? https://twitter.com/mikewhitesport/status/1482479187889901572?s=21

I've not been overly endeared to JMD in his general game. Has been fairly slow to react to the flow of the game and offer up positions to stretch the opposition in the way Sousa and Wright do. That said, when he's capable of pulling out strikes like that (he had a carbon copy hit the bar against Halifax), then he's worthy of being in the starting 11 for me.
Perhaps with some more games in a team that starts to increase in confidence we'll see more of what he's capable of.
Regards McAtee I actually get the point. I wouldn't go as far to say he was poor but I think the way he started the season was immense and he set a standard that after an injury and suspension he's going to take some time to get back to and yesterday wasn't it. The work rate was certainly there and he showed grit all the way through, he/we just didn't pull off the creative sparks in the same way as the opening 10-12 games. Not to mention coming into a team in a rut which takes a shine off the collective confidence.

Two spectacular individual goals, of which both were worthy of winning any game.
What we need now though, is the team creating clear cut chances for ordinary goals, because that’s the bread and butter stuff that will provide consistency. Worldys like the two scored yesterday will be few and far between. We need to start creating and scoring ordinary goals.
PH was sort of alluding to this in his post match interview, and that inspires me with confidence that is what he’s working towards. That can only be positive.
I’m certainly not concerned that we have a lack of finishers. For me, my concern is that we have lacked final ball creativity in our attacking play. I feel we’ve lacked a couple of central midfield creative players. Hunt looked okay, but was still very inexperienced when compared to the likes of a Disley. I’m not a massive Coke fan if I’m honest either. Fox looks like a decent option in that area though. He’s impressed me this season, and I think PH can improve him even more.
If we can find some quality in the middle of the park, I think things will improve. It’s key to unlocking the need to the ordinary and effective attacking play. The bread and butter stuff

Do we not get to see the goals anywhere then?

I believe, in Alex Hunt, we had quality in the middle of the park. He was used less frequently in away games and was suspended (and missed) in the Chesterfield game. The thing with Hunt is that I always thought he had a killer pass In him. I don’t feel that with what’s left.

I think JMD doesn't look the most naturally athletic of players and his relative lack of pace showed during the first half when he struggled to get into the game and his touch was off as well.
However, he was much improved after the break (Hurst mentioned in the post-match interview that he seemed to get his second wind) and his ability with the ball at his feet was there to see, especially with that excellent finish. I was impressed that he continued to get stuck in defensively as well, which is all you can really ask for from a player who looks knackered! If he was quicker, he wouldn't be playing in this division. I'd imagine we'll see quite a few games where he doesn't achieve too much, but if he can keep chipping in with goals and create some for others as well, he'll be a valuable player.

100% bang on the money that - that’s exactly the situation as I see it. The only potential counter argument I can think of is that a few times I’ve seen what look like great balls into the box or across the goal come to nothing. Perhaps an Amond or Tshimanga type might have read those balls better and got on the end of them. That’s the main thing I think we’re lacking in the striker department; just a bit of off the ball cuteness and finishing composure.

The pressing for that second goal is almost better than the finish itself. That's reminiscent of the Town side I remember up until the time we played Wealdstone. Let's hope we can get back to those ways, and that the reason Altrincham looked so poor was because we made them so.

JMD has said himself that he's not properly up to speed yet and is lacking a bit of fitness. I don't think he'll ever be racing around like McAtee or shooting down the wing past full backs like Sousa, but he is a clever player and he sees things. He has the composure not to rush when situations present themselves.
You need a bit of everything in a good team and his end product is already showing.
Like Hurst said though, we need to be more ruthless and score the bread and butter goals. We are getting in good situations but I think a lack of confidence is evident after our poor run. Get a good run of results going and the goals will come. I do however think we desperately need another attacking option or two and Hurst has said as much. Think we will see someone in next week hopefully.

That and the shot against Halifax off the crossbar reminds me of Connell striking the ball.

Agree on this, what I noticed on Saturday that when we did get in behind them or able to get crosses in we could have done with a mobile midfielder making a run into the box either to receive the pass or pull their defenders about. A player that could do this as well as pick a pass would be valuable.

JMD reminds me of Ian Woan. As one paced as a techno track but with a left foot so sharp that it could prevent Frank Lampard from getting a driving ban. Although JMD’s right foot isn’t bad either. If we keep him fit and get him on the ball in the final third, he should be quite a catch.
