“ Prince Philip (Greek: Φίλιππος / Fílippos[3]) of Greece and Denmark was born in Mon Repos on the Greek island of Corfu on 10 June 1921, the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.[4] A member of the House of Glücksburg, the ruling house of Denmark, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from George I of Greece and Christian IX of Denmark, and he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones.” Mon ReposSounds about right?

No it isn’t. Titles mean nothing. Read up on his early life and you will find quite a different story. I am not particularly royalist but I don’t think that Queen or country could have had a more loyal supporter. The old lad did well and I bet missing out on the 100 will not have bothered him one iota.

But others are allowed to say how they loved his politically incorrect (aka ‘insensitive’) jokes? I would say he served this country well, and fulfilled his part of the social contract for those born into such privilege.

“ Philip's family went to France, where they settled in the Paris suburb of Saint-Cloud in a house lent to them by his wealthy aunt, Princess George of Greece and Denmark.”
“ Philip was first educated at The Elms, an American school in Paris run by Donald MacJannet, who described Philip as a "know it all smarty person, but always remarkably polite".[12] In 1928, he was sent to the United Kingdom to attend Cheam School, living with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven, at Kensington Palace and his uncle, George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, at Lynden Manor in Bray, Berkshire”I must’ve missed his stint as a chimney sweep.

Well that’s beyond doubt, he’s dead. Not a great deal bothers him at the moment. Oddball behaviour pretending you know him or his thoughts though. He’s not your mate...

People on the right moaning about lefties bringing politics into it, whilst bringing politics into it. Absolutely no need to bring a former leader of a political party, who held no government office into it. If he did say anything about the D of E’s death, you wouldn’t like it anyway.
Remove the log in your own eye before trying to remove the speck from your neighbour’s eye and all that.

Loosen your top button. It was a preempted referral to the go to stance of keeping the monarchy. I am more than happy to discuss why you feel the monarchy should be retained. I think my reference to democracy shows that I would welcome debate. If you can gather up your toys and disinfect your dummy before we proceed......

The Duke hasn't been dead for 24 hours yet and some are poking fun. There's a time for everything and today our thoughts should be for her Majesty The Queen in her time of grieve.
At her age, I sincerely hope that she can cope with her sad loss.

I am sad for an old woman who has lost her husband. Also, for the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. However, I will not be drawn into the inevitable hysteria for the passing of a man who has led an extremely privileged life of luxury at our expense. The last year has seen thousands die alone and impoverished. We will now endure several days of blanket media coverage and the glossing over of his unsavoury views as eccentric and quirky. I would much rather see the celebration of the thousands of unrecognised heroes of the last 14 months. Arryarryarry introduced the topic of politics to this thread.

I find patriotism and nationalism to be very weird and often dangerous and nasty traits that very seldom lead to anything positive. But, each to their own, personally I was more bothered when Bowie and Bill Withers died.

A person can only play the hand they are dealt and live in the times they were born.. I seem to remember him saying a few years ago that he was not royal and therefore should not have a state funeral with all the trappings. I notice all the flowers are removed straightaway and that would be his wish too I bet. What a pity we took notice of Blair and his “People’s Princess” line over Diana and didn’t do the same for her.
I have no doubt Phil came out with crude and offensive comments. So easy to take moral high ground in 2021 and say he was a racist, sexist or whatever. My father was his generation and he said exactly the same things, who didn’t?
Can’t say I liked him but there again I never met him, never went for a pint with him, never worked with him. Can’t say I am a devout royalist either and especially no fan of the hangers on younger generations. Who would have thought a favourite grandson who had been loved and aided from birth by his grandad would make such a crass comment as “Thank you for your service”? Beggars belief to me. I think he did a bit more than that.

My 24 hours are up. I am a Royalist, to a degree, and I am sure that the Duke would not have wanted all this media fuss. There is only so much that can be said and done. I for one am fed up with it all and would like some normality back in our news. I am certainly not looking forward to the funeral with what will be back-to-back 24 hours blanket media coverage. I did have the pleasure of a small conversation with the Duke, some decades ago, and found him to be a nice charming guy. I think I could some him up as someone who did his duty for Queen and country. A person of controversy who tried to help others.

I’m no royalist but I do have respect for some of them including Phillip and the Queen. It’s a shame once again the vile left wing can’t keep there sick and twisted views off social media on the day Phillip passed away.

Pleased you met him DB. As for myself as you may know by now Iam a massive royalist . Was he perfect no . But he did do some good things notably the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme which helps a lot of youngsters here and abroad . Just yesterday I heard on the radio it was his scheme which got one lad of a life of a crime to help him create his own catering business which is still going strong.

Democracy only works if the genuine majority vote is accepted. Mass vote rigging is not very democratic.
Evidence?

I’m no royalist but I do have respect for some of them including Phillip and the Queen. It’s a shame once again the vile left wing can’t keep there sick and twisted views off social media on the day Phillip passed away.
"Vile left wing" "Sick and twisted" Have a chamomile tea and a slice of cake. You must still have your Charles and Diana commemorative crockery in the cupboard.

Do you not do the likes of Twitter it Facebook then Smokey? There is sadly many on there still spewing their hate, here’s a snippet.....“glad your dead you racist old illegitimate” “I feel no issue with laughing about his death” “thank god been waiting for this day” how can you think these people are not sick and twisted? A quick look at their Bio shows it’s the same old usual suspects with Corbynista’s, BLM supporters and the nice socialist types. Vile and disgusting people they give the left a bad name.

Hate to read that. Are these numptys perfect ?. Doubt it. Iam sure if you look in their closets they have some mistakes you can pull out. Hopefully Twitter and Facebook do something about it and report it to the police. Certainly should give the Duke some respect as he has died. Thankfully they dont represent the views of all on the left and are the sick minority.

It would have read far better if you had said "a minority" or "a small element". To state the "vile left wing" is a huge generalisation. Quite clearly we are from different political persuasions but you attempt to discredit the BLM movement and Corbynistas (strange term) by cherry picking the views of a few idiots. If you want to pick apart socialism or an anti racist movement do it in a way that doesn't demean yourself.

Point taken! I could of phrased it better ... the vile part of the left is what I was thinking.

I don’t need to discredit the BLM movement it’s done that all by itself, as for Corbynista’s! It’s a term some if these cranks use to describe themselves and like I said sadly there was a lot more than a few.

And your point Ginny? No one is saying there isn’t! The fact is the vast majority slagging the Prince off with vile abuse Proudly align themselves with the left, (genuinely not seen anyone attacking the prince with vile abuse from the right). Unless you want to define the SNP’s as right wing. Just had a quick look and it’s going on ..... being reported Celtic fans where setting fireworks off during the gun salute, a Guardian newspaper contributor Karen Geier tweeted how saddened she was that Phillip died peacefully, and the lovely princess of champagne socialists Lily Allen has now had her little pop.

Difference between the Duke and scummy Allen is that he never had intentions to offend, and this is the critical difference when we talk about outspokenness.

Are you searching the web looking for people to be offended by,? surely that is the definition of snowflakery. Get a grip of yourself, the Royal family is not as popular as you like to think, it has nothing to do with democracy and is completely outdated. The man has had a long comfortable life and didn't care who he offended or upset , you seem determined to be upset on his behalf. Carry on tugging the forelock and bowing and scraping if you want to but don't expect anyone else to, especially those who would like us to be a true democracy

For once we’re in agreement Ska.😀 I read Lily Allen and think it says a lot more about her small mindedness than Philip and move on. Idiocy doesn’t offend me. .

I’ve already stated I’m not a royalist do keep up! Sorry I just don’t think revelling in the death of a 99 year old war veteran who worked tirelessly for this country is something to be ignored. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if you’re one of the wrong - uns that’s jumped to the defence of a drug addict criminal for the last 11 months.

My point? Well, being of a left wing persuasion and being someone who sees myself as level headed and able to see both sides of an argument, even when I am vehemently opposed to the other side of said argument, I get pretty annoyed when people such as yourself make such sweeping statements as "looney left" and "vile lefties". But what particularly annoys me is that put side by side with some of the proper vile stuff that has been perpetrated by the right and especially the establishment; the left are mere amateurs in that regard. The left may spout off on social media, they may go to demonstrations where things can get heated and some stuff may get chucked at the police and a few windows may get smashed and a few lefties may well gets their heads clattered by truncheons. Let's just say a lot of them are angry at the way the country operates and they get a bit heated. Now let's have a look at the establishment, of which DofE was in the top echelons. How do these people get into their positions of great wealth, power and privilege? Do you think they got there through fair means with a nod and a wink and no blood on their hands. Of course they didn't. Someone, somewhere in their ancestry subjugated some country or other, or some group of people for their own ends. Some laird or lord of the manor threw all the people off his land and shipped them to the colonies because sheep made more money than people did. Remember the colonies; the very thing that was ruled over by Prince and Queeny? How did we come to rule over all them countries with their natural resources ripe for the picking? We sent our army there to beat them into submission, that's how. I won't even get on to all the workers that have been exploited over the centuries, in this country and others. We have a country that contains the likes of the Queen and Prince Philip at one end of the spectrum and food banks at the other, yet somehow, the people who see that as truly vile are berated for airing their grievances and attending a few demonstrations. What really baffles me is that the people at the bottom of the pile lap it all up and think the monarchy are some kind of special human beings, when they are no different than the rest of us. Somehow, we have ended up with this lopsided hierarchical society that folk feel the need to bow and scrape to, when all they are is the descendants of people far more brutal than anything the "loony left" could dream up. Sorry I got a bit ranty, but I've seen the left and good people like Jeremy Corbyn being painted as social pariahs by the establishment press for years now, as if the the people pointing the fingers are beyond reproach, when they are mostly vile, money grubbing liars, capable of far dirtier deeds than most. That's my point.

Ginny theres some valid points in there and thanks for your response. Iam a green party member and dont think no party has all the answers. Its why I thank God for democracy. Freedom of expression within reason is vital if any country is allowed to move forward in a productive manner. The reason why I love the Royals though and yes they have been born into privilege is at least they give this country a identity. The Queen for example trys to be a figurehead of morality and is far better than the newspapers that try to become the think tank of this country.I dont want to talk about Jesus again but in this instance its necessary .She cites him as the person she has most looked up to for moral leadership . I remember doing a course in Sociology and ultimately all the what the media are interested in is selling papers even at the cost of most things eg even morality. No journalist is perfect and even in their profession its a dog eat dog world where if you dont do your job right your out of the door and someone is more than willing and waiting to take your place. I remember as well reading John Simpsons book and even the BBC dont give the true facts on the news and on occasion made things up. Point is you cant trust the media completely.

The thinly veiled attempts to rebrand a nonce through the death of his father gives you an indication of how twisted the firm is.
The ongoing depressing music and continued repetitious ‘documentaries’ is tiresome. He died. It’s sad. Move on...
Significantly more important folk have died over the years to little fanfare...this incessant need to keep putting a dysfunctional family on a pedestal is ridiculous and as stated, the irony in it all is the poorest, most vulnerable in society lap it up...

With effort and sacrifice one can change ones circumstances/job Aldi within reason. Ive known a fair few people that have changed their lives for the better through sheer will that have come through poverty and other severe disadvantages and are now in jobs they like. Iam not denying its harder but it can be done. In life its all about effort. No effort no results. If you have the ability and the passion for something theres a good chance you will make it.

First off I’d already clarified that my comments were not aimed at the left in general, it was the radicals (but you know this) I have friends and family who would identity as having a left wing point of view just for the record. So basically the old illegitimate is fair game because he was lucky enough to born privileged, that’s it in your little nutshell! Dissecting your rant there’s some I’d definitely agree with, but you’ve gone off on this tangent almost as a deflection It seems from the point I made. Look there was some horrible disgusting comments made and we know where from.... on the day he died as well .... how can you even seriously try defend it? Do you not think about the queen and his family? If this was Corbo who died for example then yes I’m sure there would be some sharp objects from the right having a pop but I’d be calling them out, And I can imagine that it wouldn’t be with anything like the same kind of ferocity and hate.

Didn't know him, couldn't care less. Especially as it's someone who has lived to 99, I'd bloody take that age.
I wonder what you would say to some young man/woman about 22/25 years of age serving in our armed forces. To put it bluntly, to you, you are posting on here because people like these protect your freedom. Freedom to live how you like, say what you think, and go about life as you wish. I wonder if you would say to them ' I don't know you and could care less about you, and what's more, if you live to a long age I'll care even less '. Most genuine real people would go out of their way to thank them, they put their lives on the line 24/7 for all of us. Likewise, a young man in that age group like millions of others, some of whom died, fought for mine, YOUR, and everybody's Freedom. The Duke was lucky and lived through it and I hope all in the armed services live to 99; even you. It doesn't matter who you know or don't know, but you should care about those who look after your freedom beit now, in the past or in the future.

I find it difficult to justify any conflict we have been involved in over the last 100 years apart from WW2. For those who served in that war we will always owe a huge debt of gratitude. Since then I can only have sympathy for the families who have lost loved ones in conflicts such as Falklands, Iraq, the Troubles etc. Young men and women were taken into these wars by politicians whose motivation was entirely different to events in 1939.

Totally agree with you. Politicians today, of all parties, are on some sort of ego trip to prove to the world that we are still Great Britain. Unfortunately, there are no longer maps of the world covered in 'pink' nations. We are an island and should spend resources protecting these islands instead of building aircraft carriers to sail the world's oceans. We don't have enough ships anymore to form a decent navy of any size, never mind any a task force centred on one of these carriers. At the end of the 20th century, I was fortunate to have lunch on HMS Grimsby. During my conversation with the captain, I ask if we could form an armada to sail to the Falklands again. NO was the reply. Since that time numbers of warships have declined or being mothballed. We now have an army of fewer men than the fighting forces that landed on D Day, an air force whose squadron number of planes are in single digits. As I just said politicians on ego trips.

My own debt of gratitude goes to my dad because without him returning home after being demobbed in 1946, I'd never have existed I respect any soldier who put his life on the line but I don't get this OTT grief-fest for this one particular survivor from that bloody conflict

I couldn't agree more. I blame the TV news and the newspapers, non want to break ranks and go back to the norm. 12 months of covid, Brexit, and now this. Apart from the sorry Bolton fans on Saturday when we win, I dread to think what the TV and press will do. Sunday will be terrible all day. Considering the Duke didn't want a lot of fuss ( I read this somewhere and can't remember where) it's a big song and dance from the media trying to score points on each other. Monday might be a bit calmer but I think it will be the end of the week before it all just starts to calm down. PS. I am a Royalist
