Apparently he was a big fan of his own Spitting Image puppet.

So was Andrew, with his puppet, if you accept what some of his alleged victims have said...

Didn't know him, couldn't care less. Especially as it's someone who has lived to 99, I'd bloody take that age.

I wonder what you would say to some young man/woman about 22/25 years of age serving in our armed forces. To put it bluntly, to you, you are posting on here because people like these protect your freedom. Freedom to live how you like, say what you think, and go about life as you wish.

I wonder if you would say to them ' I don't know you and could care less about you, and what's more, if you live to a long age I'll care even less '. Most genuine real people would go out of their way to thank them, they put their lives on the line 24/7 for all of us.

Likewise, a young man in that age group like millions of others, some of whom died, fought for mine, YOUR, and everybody's Freedom. The Duke was lucky and lived through it and I hope all in the armed services live to 99; even you.

It doesn't matter who you know or don't know, but you should care about those who look after your freedom beit now, in the past or in the future.

I find it difficult to justify any conflict we have been involved in over the last 100 years apart from WW2. For those who served in that war we will always owe a huge debt of gratitude.

Since then I can only have sympathy for the families who have lost loved ones in conflicts such as Falklands, Iraq, the Troubles etc. Young men and women were taken into these wars by politicians whose motivation was entirely different to events in 1939.

Totally agree with you. Politicians today, of all parties, are on some sort of ego trip to prove to the world that we are still Great Britain. Unfortunately, there are no longer maps of the world covered in 'pink' nations.

We are an island and should spend resources protecting these islands instead of building aircraft carriers to sail the world's oceans. We don't have enough ships anymore to form a decent navy of any size, never mind any a task force centred on one of these carriers.

At the end of the 20th century, I was fortunate to have lunch on HMS Grimsby. During my conversation with the captain, I ask if we could form an armada to sail to the Falklands again. NO was the reply. Since that time numbers of warships have declined or being mothballed.

We now have an army of fewer men than the fighting forces that landed on D Day, an air force whose squadron number of planes are in single digits. As I just said politicians on ego trips.

My own debt of gratitude goes to my dad because without him returning home after being demobbed in 1946, I'd never have existed

I respect any soldier who put his life on the line but I don't get this OTT grief-fest for this one particular survivor from that bloody conflict

I couldn't agree more.

I blame the TV news and the newspapers, non want to break ranks and go back to the norm. 12 months of covid, Brexit, and now this. Apart from the sorry Bolton fans on Saturday when we win, I dread to think what the TV and press will do. Sunday will be terrible all day.

Considering the Duke didn't want a lot of fuss ( I read this somewhere and can't remember where) it's a big song and dance from the media trying to score points on each other.

Monday might be a bit calmer but I think it will be the end of the week before it all just starts to calm down.

PS. I am a Royalist

Apparently, the BBC has been told to provide alternate viewing. I don't know what but it seems we are to have a choice.

Let's hope it's not a repeat of last Friday's news!
