Goes very much against M.Js style of signing really, he likes a few experienced heads Wooly, Collins, Thomas to name a few but otherwise he likes to sign younger players not players at the end of their careers. If he did it would be like when Brodie signed for us the atmosphere at BP would be toxic when he would be on the pitch.

How can you fit a wider seat on a bench.......like the idea though.

When you hear that we're bringing in reinforcements, you'd hope they mean new players and not extra bracing for the dugout seating.

I’d rather have him in our ranks than having to play against him. He’d certainly give us some added bite and maybe give the younger players some confidence to flourish on the pitch. A protector type.

I’d be surprised if this rumour has legs but if it actually happens then I’d actually welcome him. Feels bizarre saying it but footballs a funny old game.

Not heard anything over this way but will check in the pub later to see if there is any local knowledge floating around. I did hear we tried to get him towards the end of the summer window so who knows.

Personally believe we do need an alternative up top and certainly one that can win aerial battles and hold the ball up. If true could see it as a six month stop gap signing and I would not have a problem with that as far worse options.

Joke of a signing if true. Overweight bruiser who Town fans have vilified and ridiculed for seasons, plus he plays for our hated local rivals. I’d rather have no one come in than him.

I'd be amazed and slightly disappointed if he signed for us to be honest.

I never get this outrage at the thought of us bringing in a player like Rhead, or a manager like Evans. "If we sign player/manager X, i will never set foot in BP again"

We need someone to help at the top of the pitch, and if the manager thinks that is Rhead, then so be it. I'm no fan of his, but if he were to sign for us, then he would be a GTFC player, and would get my support. It's clearly been difficult to find an experienced striker to bring in, and maybe he is one of limited options. If we were to bring him in on a deal to the end of the season and he helped us move up the table, then i'd be ok with that. It's dog eat dog in this league, and before anyone says "yeah, he will eat the dog all by himself, the fat git", just remember that despite his bulk, there is no way he would be a league player if he wasn't fit enough to perform at this level. Sometimes, needs must, and our league status is more important than anything.

Having said all that, i doubt there is any truth in it, but you never know in football.

Didn’t realise how old he was.

Given the emphasis Jolley has put on fitness, I’d be astonished if this were true. Can only see it as divisive on and off the pitch.

Personally dont think Reid is good enough anymore, yes he is nasty/pushy and hassles the opposition, but bits I've seen this season hasn't really done much, there must be better out there we could get.

P Fale are signing a striker next week, never know it could be Reid to replace the Pope whos out for several weeks so Aspin can go back to full on hoofball again..

Probably nearer to the truth. Just more embarrassment shovelled onto being a Town fan in recent times, after it's all died down it can be said that Town fans actually wanted the thug, and he didn't want to know.

Can't see Rhead fitting MJ's philosophy at all. And seems a bit of a sideways step at best signing a promotion chasing team's ageing reserve if we're looking to be promotion chasing ourselves next season. Much rather would like to see how Ahkeem develops over a number of games than Rhead filling up another striker's spot. Looks like we're going to have a dozen games luxury to experiment and Ahkeem has got a far greater potential performance ceiling than Rhead, and if not Rose, I'd rather we looked at someone else..

This is either a total wind up or somebody just having a laugh. There is no way that MJ would sign that tub of lard. He doesn't fit in with MJ's football style and he would be no good as a basis for a side intent on promotion. I'll stick my neck out here and state that if MJ signs Rhead then I will show my bare ar*e in Cleethorpes Market Place ( and it's not a sight for the squeemish !!!!)

Don't want Rhead for a minute but, if MJ decides that Thomas needs a target to play off and if Cardwell isn't good enough to be that target and if Rhead is the best option available......only issue is if the shop has got enough triple XL shirts.

Will you stop coming on here with your common sense, there's no place for it on the fishy. Can't imagine he would only sign to the end of the season though. Minimum 18 months or there's no benefit to him

Can't see it myself for many of the reasons already stated - and I love Cowley being described as a cockwomble!

But.... as a fan stood next to me at Lincoln sais: "Do I like Rhead? No, I fecking hate him" But "would I have him at GTFC? In  heartbeat"

Positives? I think the major thing we lack is a target man/partner for Wes (who was fantastic yesterday, by the way) - Rhead would be top class at this; holding the ball up, enabling Wes and midfielders to make runs etc. He'd also be a big threat at set pieces.
Obvious neither Cardwell or Akheem have the experience, maturity or presence at the minute

Negatives: He's a cockwomble

I've heard dafter rumours but almost all Jolley's signings are young and hungry players and have half an eye to long term planning

I think there would be a benefit to him. He'd be getting games which would put him in a better position in the summer.

Whether there's a benefit to us, I'm not so sure.

If defenders have one eye on him that will give Thomas and Rose (when on the pitch) time to put the ball in the net.

It takes all types to make a successful team

If he does the business he will be  excepted

Noooooooo

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

He would create space and take the opposing centre half away from Wes, as for those that say no way whatsoever, are these the same people that keep typing " in Jolley we trust".

Mike Lyons signing if I ever saw one. get more coaching into young Rose that`s what management is all about.

Afternoon fellow Mariners!

Hope you're all enjoying today following yesterday's win. I know I am!

I've been reading the comments regarding Rhead and the rumours about him signing. Everyone has a different option and that's essentially what a message board like this is all about. For me, I wouldn't be behind Jolley for signing him, however I trust in what he's doing and would hope that it would work out in the instance we did sign.

There's a couple of reasons I would prefer us not to. Firstly, the manager has stated about looking for players that fit the team ethos. I must say I've been really impressed whenever I've heard this. He clearly has an idea of what the club is and how he wants the team to play and be viewed. His signings so far that are generally younger, hungry players with a great work rate. In addition, the team seems to be cohesive and a good unit, this has only been further proven by the players reaction to Fox leaving. I just can't see Rhead fitting in to that sort of dressing room.

I know that some fans have the opinion that we are too nice to play against, which might be a valid point. A lot of successful teams have a mean centre half and a midfield enforcer for example. However this is usually done within the rules of the game, John Welsh's tackle yesterday was a great example of this.

I really wouldn't like to see Rhead up front playing the role that we saw with Richard Brodie. I was embarrassed at times at how he let his temper get the better of him and I can only see that Rhead would be similar if not worse.

To summarise, I'd love a forward that was a handful, who let the opposition defenders know that he was there, but by working their socks off for the team and the fans in the right way. If he does sign then he does, hopefully he'd do the shirt and the club proud, but I just can't see happening.

I'm looking forward to to seeing what the last few days of the transfer window brings. In Jolley I trust.

UTM.

If Matt Rhead signed for us and started up front next weekend, he'd definitely get sent off.

Something about wearing a black and white shirt that makes officials see the very worst in us at the moment. All those indiscretions he's been getting away with all his career - taking out Hendo at Wembley, diving to win a pen v us last season - suddenly won't work for him at a club that isn't getting the rub of the green in those departments.

Perhaps if he played for a manager who knows how to conduct himself instead of a crass cockney cockwomble it might make him a better person

If he became a better person he would become a worse player ...being a dirty sneaky lump is his game.

Can’t believe from one person saying ‘I’ve heard Matt Rhead is about to sign on monday’ a 4 page Thread has emerged,

Can not see this happening at all, doesn’t fit with how Jolley plays at all his everything I don’t think Jolley or the fans want.

Don’t get me wrong it could be the 1 in 10 chance this is right and could sign but I’d be shocked and dissapointed and I personally cannot stand him.

Also gives us a plan B, which the lack of on here is often criticised, and do people honestly believe that the Cowleys have a centre forward who is grossly overweight? Like the majority he would not be my choice but I can also accept it is not as ridiculous suggestion as many on here suggest?

It seems a number of the Fishy only want success if we play like Barcelona & never commit an infringement  and if only professional football were that simple.

Why would you not fella?

He splits opinion but he’d give us something up top that we desperately need.

Don’t care if people don’t like him, he’s a footballer and would spice things up top for sure

He's got a touch of the Richard Brodie about him. Remember hating Brodie playing against us. Guy was always a right sh*thouse. When he signed I thought yes have abit of that frigger. He'll be doing that for us now. Then turns out he was just abit turd, the fans didn't like him and from what I gather neither did his team mates.

But the one thing alot of us have said about the team at the minute is we lack a big strong forward who can hold the ball up and make it stick. Not saying he's the answer but do feel he's the type of player we're missing. Really liked the look of the massive lad Macclesfield had up top. He was a right handful

Although Steve Livingstone was a better player they both basically have the same style. Feel we need someone up front who can hold the ball up to give the midfield time to get into an attacking position.

Let's be honest, it's not really safe for him or us if he's next to the sea. One wrong dive and it's a tsunami

Well he meets the second half of that

Through the door there came familiar laughter,

Read this thread with a bit of interest and mild amusement. Rhead does what it says on the tin I find it unlikely MJ would want him but IF he does we know what were getting. Rhead like him or loathe him causes havoc in the opposition box and people comparing him to Brodie are miles off from what I have read about Rhead? Brodie fell out with numerous team`s and Rhead is one of the few player`s the Imps have retained since non league though it looks like his day`s are now numbered. If he signed for Town it would probably be a stop gap signing til the end of the Season with a view to him winning headers for Thomas to get on the end of.Rhead himself whilst scoring a few goals has never been considered an out and out goalscorer and due to his lack of movement I don`t see how he fits into what Jolley generally does? If he signs I will happily give him a chance but find it very unlikely?

Didn’t realise how old he was.

Given the emphasis Jolley has put on fitness, I’d be astonished if this were true. Can only see it as divisive on and off the pitch.

Rhead lost a load of weight in preseason this summer and when he reported back for training was a lot lighter and quicker. However, when they started the season proper, he got injured a lot very early on. This was attributed to him having his "thud and blunder" style of play. While he was sidelined, he piled a few pounds back on again and didn't get injured again after he got that layer of protective lard back!
All of this is from a member of their physio team who I used to go to for sports massage before he joined them full time, so definitely from the horses mouth.
This is a roundabout way of saying that player fitness isn't the be all and end all! Some guys thrive on being a bit harder to nudge off the ball while others don't.
As reflected above though, wouldn't want that tosser anywhere near BP.

The idea that Rhead is in any way comparable to Steve Livingstone is absurd. Nearly as absurd as him signing for us.

We were two divisions higher when we had Livvo. Players of his stature would not even contemplate coming to us now.

Absolutely! Livingstone played for Chelsea and the nearest connection Rhead has to Chelsea is all the buns he eats!

Personally think Rhead would be an excellent signing, if only til the end of the season.
Different type of player to anything we've got at the minute.
Would be an excellent 'plan b' for a side who at times struggle to create chances
