So that confirms it's a three-game ban then.

Strange sending off under Serious Foul Play... I had it down as a red card for Denying Goalscoring Opportunity, as I thought he did mistime his tackle on the guy when through on goal and last man.

Would now expect this to be overturned.

Absolute farce. This one game has contained a serious amount of rough justice.

Spoke to a guy at work who's a fully qualified referee.

His opinion is that it wasn't a red card.

It's not two-footed, he only had eyes for the ball, his foot didn't go over the ball, and at no point did he leap in or leave the ground. It was an old-fashioned sliding challenge and, while it may have looked heavy, it was controlled.

In which case he's not sure what 'serious foul play' occurred.

Still, that's the opinion of one individual, and not the opinion of a panel who, let's be honest, will be looking for absolutely any reason to back the man who made the decision at the time - particularly as he's regarded as one of the best.

In my opinion - biased as it is - I thought it was a great challenge. McKeown's initial hesitation may have caused the problem, but as a defender I'd have been proud of that challenge. It was a goal-saving challenge and he had to win the ball, which he did.

Football is a contact sport and you can't stop yourself sliding into the opponent when you're committed like that.

For those who think my opinion would be different had the Lincoln keeper done the same to us, sorry, but I'd have accepted that it was a top challenge (although naturally I'd have appealed for a free kick and red card in the crowd, in the heat of the moment, more out of hope than expectation).

I can’t help but think appealing is a pointless excercise and will only increase the ban as they’ll back a PL ref every time.

Yeah, you’re right. There hasn’t ever been a single red card overturned from  a PL ref 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I think they only increase the ban if they think the Club have just appealed just to delay the ban kicking in so player is available for next game, when it's not realistically a case worth reviewing.

And whilst we do have a game on Tuesday, it's hardly a massive game for a lower-mid-table side such as ourselves. So I wouldn't expect them to seem it a frivolous appeal and add a game on.

As for the chances of our appeal being successful, I'll be surprised if it is. I don't think it was a red card but I'll bet they won't want to go against their Premier League referee who probably thinks he did them a favour by dropping down to do a League Two game.

Looks to me like Mike Dean has used VAR here. There is no way he sent Mecca off for serious foul play at the time.

He's looked at the video after, seen Macca got the ball first(so he can't be sent off for denying a goal scoring oportunity) and decided that the only way this will stand up is if he changes it to serious foul play(as Macca's foot was a bit high)

Unfortunately I expect the fa to side with this poor excuse of a ref!

They might reduce the ban to one game ,

BUT

They might increase it to tour games,

Its a good job we got Russell.

I wasn't aware that Sincil Bank had VAR installed.
As far as the appeal is concerned, it is worth a shout. The most we could get added to his ban is one match but if the appeal is upheld then we could get it reduced to just one match or even completely rescinded.

Although relatively untested, anyone else think that Russell did ok when he came on? Not a bad stand in to have and his kicking was noticeably more secure and accurate with a flatter trajectory than Macca's..

Russell is a good keeper, so they obviously think it's worth the risk of an additional match being added to the ban.

Wouldn't surprise me if their submission to video evidence included footage of and mention of the elbows to try and influence the panel! Best get Ohman and his black eyes to introduce it as well!

The amount of red cards we have had this season is astonishing. We are not even a dirty side. and i've seen far worse culprits than us this season. Lincoln and a few other teams take gamesmanship to a new level, yet seem to get away with it in the main.

Watching MOTD last night and Sterling got hacked down in the box. Stone wall penalty no question, and the ref just waived play on. I often wonder what they are seeing, and it's obvious they have never played the game.

I know two wrongs don't make a right but it cancels out the penalty that City won a short while back when Sterling fell over his own legs without the opposition being anywhere near him

I think the fact that our team doesn't seem to surround the ref and hound him like some other teams in this league goes against us.

I'm not saying I want to see us do that but wonder if we are too nice compared to some who seem to get at the refs a lot more.

If you ever whatch the goals express on Sky at 6pm Saturday evenings, they show the foul that leads to any penalties, some of those given are quite astounding, they seem to give them very easily sometimes.

Having looked at the TV footage again and again and paused the video at various points as McKeown made the "tackle", I cannot believe Town bothered appealing the red card. Under the current rules (and how they are interpreted) it was a red card for a dangerous tackle all day long and an appeal was a complete waste of time.

1) McKeown didn't play the ball with his feet (or leg for that matter). He played the ball with his backside.
2) As he completed the "tackle" both feet were out of contact with the ground.

I appreciate we're all disappointed with Mike Dean's inconsistent performance on Saturday, but this was one of the few key incidents in the match he actually got correct. It was a red card for a dangerous tackle.

I would point out though that I thought the Lincoln City goalkeeper should have been sent off in the first half. He raced out of the box when Wes Thomas was chasing a through ball and kung-fu kicked the ball clear with both feet high in the air and therefore not "in control".

I'm not even going to bother talking about the elbows.

I agree totally with Golly. Macca jumped into the challenge with both feet off the ground. No players are allowed to do that anymore. There was no chance that it would have been overturned!! A stupid appeal!!

Lincoln were offside but he pulled off a smart acrobatic save to prevent a goal in that move. Seems poetic that he will be starting tomorrow night against his former club. I'm sure I read somewhere that he and Cooper don't get along too.

He was dismissed for "violent conduct" therefore it was already a 3 match ban before the appeal!

Even though I thought it was a red card it was still worth an appeal.

You only get a extra ban if the panel Deem the appeal be “frivolous” there is some slight doubt about the red card, the fact that he did get the three match ban which he would’ve got anyway would suggest it was worth an appeal

I for one is not that bothered about Macca not been in goal, he is a good goalkeeper but not the messiah as some people make out,  he was the one at fault, charging out like that, there was only going to be one outcome. quite happy with another keeper for 3 games

Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No

Has he been given time to achieve promotion by the chairman and fans? Yes

It was a 3 game ban I would have thought it would turn into a 4 game ban after a failed appeal.

Pleased they did not increase so we had nothing to lose

It's still a 3 game ban, therefore the panel deemed that the appeal "wasn't frivolous".

Make of that what you will!

Appeal failed. The Fa, the panel the officials are all an absolute disgrace. Its not even a flipping foul😡

Take a look at post by GollyGTFC for the sensible answer.
Did you really think the appeal would be successful??

Why bother appealing against a one match ban? Ridiculous decision by the club. It’s one game ffs, we now lose him for three. The FA were never going to overturn.

It was a three match ban originally.

My mistake, I thought if you failed with an appeal the ban was increased?

Think we took the view that there was just enough doubt to make it worth an appeal, with not too much risk another game would be added on for a "frivolous" appeal. Worst case scenario, we lost him for another game. Best case scenario, they downgraded it to a one game ban for denying a goalcoring opportunity. I don't think we thought we would get it overturned completely, so it was worth a go. It didn't work, we've lost nothing, and that's that. I thought it was a red at the time, and still do under current guidelines.

We move on and have an excellent deputy in Russell.

Never thought it would succeed. If the original ban was for one match only it would have been daft to appeal. As it was a 3 game ban then there's not so much to lose.

Nope, only if they think you're taking the urine in appealing. It's pretty rare this happens.

I for one is not that bothered about Macca not been in goal, he is a good goalkeeper but not the messiah as some people make out,  he was the one at fault, charging out like that, there was only going to be one outcome. quite happy with another keeper for 3 games

I'm not concerned going into the next 3 games with Russell in goal, I think he's a fine 'keeper.

But McKeown has been genuinely excellent all season for us, even going back to the back end of last season when he returned from injury.

Can you not remember Anthony Williams, Tommy Forecast and that Kean lad we had last year? You won’t appreciate McKeown til he’s gone.

And what happens if Russell has 3 absolute blinders, commands his box and distrubutss the ball excellently which then leads to multiple attacks, goal scoring opportunities and unlimately 3 convincing wins?....
Yep, unlikely I know and I for one will miss macca when he's gone, probably the best in one on one situations and best shot stopper I've seen at GTFC...

I can remember all those and I can also remember, Dean Henderson, Danny Coyne, Nigel Batch, Steve Mildenhall, Steve Sherwood etc etc all better Goalkeepers than Macca in my opinion. I’m glad we have him, he is a very good goalkeeper at this level, a great shoot stopper and excellent on one on one situations but dealing with crosses and his distribution is not the best.

As I said, I’m glad we have him as our No:1 keeper but have no problem in having Russell in goal for the next few games

Who would have guessed that goalkeepers who were playing at, had played at or were on loan from higher level clubs would be better than a player who has spent the majority of his career in non-league?

It's been the case for a while that if you fly into a challenge head-on, you're very likely to see red no matter what the circumstances.  Because the ball was won, the only offence possibly committed was endangering an opponent, as opposed to tripping for example.  So to rescind the red card would be to say that it wasn't a foul, which doesn't set the right precedent with regards to player safety as far as the FA are concerned.

If I was making the rules Macca's challenge would have been hard but fair, but I'm not legally bound to protect player safety I suppose.  I honestly think that sliding tackles will be unacceptable in the future, we're already halfway there.

Russell will be a fine stand-in so it isn't a disaster.  Macca tends to come back stronger after a break anyway.

Even though I thought it was a red card it was still worth an appeal.

You only get a extra ban if the panel Deem the appeal be “frivolous” there is some slight doubt about the red card, the fact that he did get the three match ban which he would’ve got anyway would suggest it was worth an appeal

My answer would be the same as if you ask Macca that question, something different!

Stayed in his box and take his chances with a one-on-one?  (Which he is very good at)  he could’ve just fouled him in a way that would been a one match ban who knows!! Hindsight is a wonderful thing, Are you saying that if you asked JM he would say he would do exactly the same thing? Of course he wouldn’t, it was the wrong call, we move on. As somebody said earlier, Macca tends to come back stronger after a layoff let’s hope that is the case.

Yes, I read somewhere that MJ says he deserves a place on the bench.

Of course with hindsight on JM's part he may well have done something different - whether it was the wrong call to run out as he did ( with him then not quite timing his challenge to perfection) or whether he should have stayed in his area is open to interpretation but he didn't have much choice in the matter imho

When all is said and done the passage of play before his sending off left him exposed and he was caught between a rock and a hard place - stick or twist he was totally exposed and it didn't end well for him or for us ( especially with Russell having a tough assignment last night )

An imp colleague mentioned that Toffolo went to challenge a Yeovil player with his boot shoulder height and caught the player on chest/shoulder area.  If that was Mike Dean he would have been sent off but only got a yellow.  The refs are just a joke.

I think what you maybe actually meant is if a Yeovil player had done that to Toffolo then he would have been sent off....
