Don't want to come across as negative but slightly concerned if this is the case. Not only would he need to adjust to Football League, he'd need to adjust to working in a full-time environment. Would be a sensible appointment had we still been in the Conference. Time will tell, but if we get this appointment wrong we could soon find ourselves in trouble.

Get the bit about step up and full time but this August PH needed to adjust to the Football League he had never managed there before.

Marcus looks like a good recruit and one that will put 110% into GTFC!

Month to month contract I would guess, so probally around £2,500 before Tax/NI if he's on say 30K a year.

I think I will be positive to this appointment if it is true. As many here have said - every appointment is a gamble.
Does anyone know how to pronounce his name? Is it Big-not or more like the French bigno` ?

Yes fair point Herts. Concerns are more centred around having to adjust to both at the same time. Felt that Scott and Hurst took a bit too long to adjust to full-time given the resources they had. Happy it's not some chancer on the way down though.

Success is never guaranteed, but from our own experience surely we've a better chance with someone who has worked his backside off in management, learned the whole thing from the ground up, played over 600 games and with a recent promotion under his belt. And his general attitude to football and life in general will be a breath of fresh air.

Can you imagine waking up the the following tomorrow morning:

Happy with this, I think that you are forgetting he has some very good players here who are not suddenly going to go backwards, I hope we see some better attacking options now, sick of this bulling the opposition up every match

Would be happy with this and even happier to realistically think that he could easily bring Omari Sterling James and their striker Akwasi Asante with him. Have seen both a couple of times and they both look like the players that could step up the leagues ala Bogle. Dont know if Omari is related to Raheem but he is his double in both looks and playing style even down to the limp wrist down by the sides when he gets a spurt on and ive seen him at full pelt, very fast indeed!

We're in an ok position in the league and the transfer window opens in two months. We have to look long term and give the guy a chance.
Hurst neither believed or expected to challenge for promotion.....at least in his public utterances. First and foremost we need someone who can coach and man manage. I'm open minded about him and hope we supporters give the guy time. Let's reassess at the end of january eh?

My first choice.  He is on an upward career path. He has delivered promotion, as champs, on low gates and a low budget.  He sets his team up to play attractive football.

He might even bring another young promising striker with him?

He might also wish that Bogle had a lower sell-on percentage.

Do you think that Fenty preferred working with a young and new manager, rather than say  an older and experienced manager like Dave Jones?

Nice to see lots of positivity about this appointment. Let's just hope the negative moaners behind the dugout don't crush his early optimism when he loses his first home game! We have to back this guy and give him time to adapt to league management.

No I don't think 3 months is particularly generous when u actually think it through. He'll need 3-4 games minimum to assess the squad and then we'll start to see what style/formation he's going to favour. Get to january n we'll see what - if any - additional players he might try to bring in(and who he ships out!) end of january seems about right to me...but what do i know, i only went to my first game in 1962

Personally, I think this is a good appointment (if true).  However, I really do not get the negativity.  Even if it was a manager I didn't rate, I still be 100% behind him.  How on earth do you expect them to feel if some 'fans' won't even give them a chance?

If true, I think this will prove to be an inspirational appointment but I don't expect an immediate winning streak. He will need time to find the combinations of players best suited to a more forceful attacking style (I hope!). I think we all want to see some entertaining football home and away again.

Well I'm happy Bignot has been offered the job.  I like the idea of new up and coming managers who have already had some success. I was happy when Scott and Hurst was appointed.

I wonder who he would/will appoint as assistant manager....

I read Bignot was pretty hands on when it came to the youth academy at Solihull Moors, setting up a youth and junior department that stretches across 30 different teams! Maybe we will see some talent coming from Solihull Moors who have great potential

McKeown, Pearson, Hearn, Bogle and more recently Mills have all adjusted quite well to the step-up from part-time.    With the exception of Hearn, who would have established himself as a good League Two/One striker were it not for injuries, all are doing OK in League Two.

If you're good enough, you're good enough.   You adapt to necessary adjustments, the very best will excel under such circumstance.

It depends what has been offered ,

If its no where near what he thought it should be in money and length of contract,

He might wait for a better offer from another club at another time,

I hope Mr Fenty is not trying to get him on the cheap.

Are you joking.? Nobody would come for that. It would make him the lowest person on Towns books. We would be the laughing stock if that figure got bantered about. I wouldn't even make a comeback for that. It wouldn't even pay the petrol in my zimmer frame.

You had mis-read what I have wrote.  Most people get paid monthly, so if he doesn't have a contract I would guess the most Grimsby Town would have to pay in terms of any compensation at all to Solihull Moors would be just a months wages, whatever he's on,  I doubt it's more than 30K a year.

Made me laugh though.

Why not? His name has the correct number of syllables to match the metre of the chant.

Why not? His name has the correct number of syllables to match the metre of the chant.

Something which Paul Hurst didn't have!

Yes it's a perfect scan.

If this is true and proven, then would the experience of Stuart Watkiss be something that he might use as an assistant manager to ease him into a new and higher division position?

Does he have an assistant at Solihull?

You had mis-read what I have wrote.  Most people get paid monthly, so if he doesn't have a contract I would guess the most Grimsby Town would have to pay in terms of any compensation at all to Solihull Moors would be just a months wages, whatever he's on,  I doubt it's more than 30K a year.

Made me laugh though.

My apologies!  Agree entirely with you

I'd hope that if Hurst did leave because of a lack of coaches, Mr Fenty wouldn't be obstinate enough to block the appointment of an attacking coach, a conditioning and fitness coach and maybe even a full time kit man to allow Warrington to concentrate solely on McKeown's handling.

Just wondering how many of those who appear in raptures about Bignot getting the nod are aware his team were hammered 6-0 by Macca's Harrogate earlier this year. I appreciate any team can have a bad day but -

The leading contenders for the shortly to become part time manager vacancy at Solihull Moors are Karl Robinson,Nigel Adkins,Danny Cowley, Curtis Woodhouse and Dave Jones, all who now say they wouldn't have wanted the Grimsby Town job even if they had been offered it

I think I will be positive to this appointment if it is true. As many here have said - every appointment is a gamble.
Does anyone know how to pronounce his name? Is it Big-not or more like the French bigno` ?

I'm fairly sure it's not pronounced "Bingo", but we could call him that anyway.

Just because we can....

Just found this about manager salarys from 2014.
  • League Two managers take home £50,000-a-year on average
  • League One bosses earn an average of £75,000-a-year
  • Premier League managers earn an average of £3million a year
  • Jose Mourinho lead the way in the top flight on £8.37m

I'd hope that everyone would have an open mind before judging him, he will need 2-3 games to get to know his players and then probably 6 weeks to iron out his philosophy on the players and work out the best way to get the most out of all the squad.

Like others have said, I'd much rather a guy that's on the up and will pump in 100% day in and day out rather than the usual merry-go round managers wanting another payday. I'm confident with a bigger crowd, better competitive budget this guy will work his nads off and hopefully make us work. I like the fact he's been interested in coaching since such a young age and learned from the likes of Dario Gradi ect. I'll be behind him 110% should he get the job.

I'd be more concerned with an older manager on the merry go round than with a young manager trying to make a name for himself. He's done well so far so nothing suggests he can't do it with us.

It's fantastic news if true and I think it is. A young keen manager and he may even bring his top striker with him in January. Positive, bold move by the board. Plenty to be upbeat about and he inherits a good squad of players doing well. I'm flippin excited.

It's a tough one dave jones or Marcus bignot, one has 3 premiership promotions a lot of contacts and experience but has had 3 years out of the game and  is still a big name ,the other has 1 non league promotion is young, talented up and coming very hard working enthusiastic manager i think it will be bignot but for me I would have only just taken jones ahead of him due to experience and contacts as bignot hasn't worked with football league standard players etc but its just my opinion will support 100% whoever gets the job good luck to both and exciting times Ahead hopefully UTM

Just wondering how many of those who appear in raptures about Bignot getting the nod are aware his team were hammered 6-0 by Macca's Harrogate earlier this year. I appreciate any team can have a bad day but -

That's just given me flashbacks to Braintree, August 2011.

why are Bignot's credentials that he is keen, works hard and is hungry for success? Surely these are a given? I'm not anti him at all, it just reads like people choosing and ignoring facts to prove their view, as opposed to debate.

Any manager with more personality than PH is a good pick, I liked PH but his dour yorkie style did wear thin at times, this Marcus Bignot sounds like and intelligent man driven by success and achievement both on and off the field. If he's the one then lets back him and give him a chance - we did that with PH and RS when they arrived and we ended up better off eventually all this guy  has to do is build on the momentum and keep us going in the right direction.

Its hard enough remembering my opinions without remembering my reasons for them!

Am sure that he's been in contact with Omar with regards to players etc and quite possibly knows some through the non league system. I'd also like to think that the players he would've seen (liked) from this/last season will now become realistic targets and maybe he's had contact with some of his excisting squad already?

Let's look at this logically.  We currently sit 6 points off an automatic promotion place and 6 off a relegation place.  3 wins on the trot and we're right in the mix, 3 losses and we're in trouble.  The team in 17th place win their game in hand and they jump to 9th.  It's tight, very tight.

We need someone in to hit the ground running and keep the points ticking over until we get to 50 and safety, anything else this season is a bonus.  Given our financial position, net trading +£59k but an underlying debt of £4m, we have no money to spend.  The cards we have are the cards we play.  Marcus has got his current club into the National League on a shoestring, he talks the language we want to hear and from his location and playing history, must have the right contacts.  For me he ticks the boxes, no appointment comes with guarantees.

I like the looks of Bignot, hope this is true and he does well with us.  I would like us to be a club that helps young managers on their way up the leagues (hopefully with us at least for a while) rather than plucking big names that for some reason get talked about a lot.  Maybe that is just cos I am burnt from Mike Newell who I must confess I thought was a fantastic appointment at the time.

Me too. With hindsight we should have picked up on the fact he had been unemployed for a while and his time at Hartlepool and Luton had not been all sweetness and light.

At least with Bignott we know he is gainfully employed, his current employers think a lot of him, he finds good players and he works hard. That's a start and that will do for me.

Very good post. We talk about 'Fenty going for the cheap option' but we seem to forget that we have a few millions pounds worth of debt. A lot of managers who we have been linked with have only had success with teams with big budgets.

Must confess though alarm bells were ringing very early doors when Newell said something like he just picked the team and never got involved with any coaching.I think Bignott will do well here lets face it if he makes the right noises in his first press conference the fans will eat it up there are 5k fans here at GTFC wanting to back any new manager and this team to the hilt.

It's rather strange now that he has "allegedly" been offered the job that his odds at Skybet have gone from 1/8 to 2/7 this morning?

I wonder if Bignot is going to give Hurst a call and ask his opinion on taking the job before he makes his decision.........

I suppose the thing you get by appointing Bignot is that he's likely to sign up-and-coming non-league players who won't be demanding big contracts.

It fits the way we have to work, given our huge debt.

Also, Bignot seems to conduct himself professionally. Obviously the most important asset of any manager is their ability to win games of football, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have an intelligent, level-headed and incredibly grounded manager because, after all, he's representing our football club.

It's always an attacking formation to keep the opponents on the defensive He scores quite a lot but needs a really good goalkeeper.  His chosen formation is well known to us ex-pros it is   1--1--8    for home matches and 1--8--1 for away matches

Matt Dean said on RH Sportstalk this evening that he has it on good authority that Bignot has verbally agreed to be the new GTFC manager with an official unveiling on Monday or Tuesday. He stressed no official word from either Town or Solihull.

Will he bring his own assistant or might we appoint one for him? Thoughts might turn to that now....

Mickey Moore is his assistant who is coming with him says the Birmingham Mail. Ex Mansfield Asst  Manager. A Solihull fan says that if Bignot has a fault, it's making a substitution too early, Now that WILL make a change.

The post I read criticised him for not making early substitutions so I wouldn't read too much into either comment!

I think we must keep our expectations realistic, he will take time to get to know his new players and he will inevitably want to bring his own in, hopefullt that Asante from Solihull will be one, he may take a significantl period to adapt to a bigger club with more demanding fans.

Hope we back the new guy now on and off the pitch. Said it last week and will say again that having no stength and conditioning coach at this level is poor.

So, his first game should be the EFL Trophy game next Wednesday against Sheff Utd in front of about 300 fans!!

I hope someone tells him us fans are boycotting this pointless game!

If he has his finger on the football pulse (which i certainly hope) then he will know the situation regarding the EFL Trophy.

I think this is the correct appointment for us and now it's over to him. It's a big chance for him to further his career and i hope he ends up one day leaving us for a much bigger club.

Be interesting to know what the contract situation is like. Will it be another rolling contract or a more permanent one.

It's always an attacking formation to keep the opponents on the defensive He scores quite a lot but needs a really good goalkeeper.  His chosen formation is well known to us ex-pros it is   1--1--8    for home matches and 1--8--1 for away matches

I remember when it used be known as 1-9-2.

Watkiss is just working voluntarily to help us out. Can't believe people are criticising him. This a bloke with quite a bit of experience and has coached at a Premier League club.

Are any of the loanees looking at potential cup-tied status? I can't remember who's on loan/signed these days, never mind their loan periods, but maybe their parent clubs had a say. Can't see Dave Moore not training to a professional standard, mind.

This sounds perfectly logical, we are now loaning players from higher division teams, you could see Barnsley or QPR perhaps needing fringe players if they draw a low placed team to save their main league squad

Also, it might be that Bignot has a change of strategy regarding loanees, so why risk being cup tied

I understand he has a strange  selection policy ( well for us its strange )

He plays wingers on the wing and midfield players in the middle.

What do you call good authority? For me has to come direct from a player to have any credibility & preferable one in the team as those on the fringes or recently left out are known to moan.

I was told last week, from a guy whose son is on Lincoln's books, that Hearn & Arnold did not like PH or his style, maybe they didn't but the other players did as there is certainly no pleasing all professional footballers especially those not getting selected.

Given Dave Moore's experience in the game, & that of Watkins and Warrington, it would be surprising if sessions are not that good but as I do not attend them hard to comment. Name your source and we might accept what you say.

I think our loan players are:
Tuton
Jackson
Collins
Comley.

So not true to say we are not playing loan players. Collins started last week and Comley and Jackson came on. Tuton not in the squad. I would not argue with that. For me if Bignot (assuming he is the new manager) can bring in a couple of decent strikers, then Tuton and Jackson can go back to Barnsley for me.

It seems Bignot commands the respect of everyone he works with, and he knows how to keep the fans onside too.

I think he'll be a safe pair of hands. Everything about this appointment feels sensible, rather than spectacular.

It could be spectacular too, by the end of the season (you never know!).

I must admit to being totally underwhelmed by this appointment in terms of the unknown but as always will support the new man.

If he carries himself like that with our fans though it could be exciting times ahead. I guy with passion and comes across as an actual human.

Wow it appears we may have recruited a manager with humour and humility and the ability to engage with the fans.

Very,very optimistic about this lad!

Marcus, "if" you are joining us all we ask for is that you are as passionate about GTFC as we are ............If that's the case I reckon the rest should look after itself!

The players definitely do it for him. When they scored the equaliser against Yeovil they "mobbed" him more than themselves as if they had done it just for him. One hell of a guy as already said. 100% genuine.

I hope we can sign Sterling and  Asante, in the same way Hurst brought McKeown and Pearson from Boston.

Sterling Bogle Asante
Vose Comley Disley
Mills Collins Pearson Davies

Totally agree. Talent gets you so far but ambition gets you further. Pearson, Disley and McKeown have been fantastic. A few seasons ago they were all linked away but they stayed and credit to them!

I would like to see the new manager implement something other than 442 as the players we have are better suited to 433 or 4231. Vose is a very good player but not a winger.

Bignot would be a great appointment

Just watched MOTD on catchup, it's stunning what Conte has done at Chelsea with basically the same side that Mourhino was driving into the ground a year ago.
Not comparing us to Chelsea in any way, just seeing a new and very energetic, people/fan/press-friendly manager take over from someone who'd become a little jaded, a little shall we say grumpy and lost his spark, and that new guy re-inventing, re-invigorating a side, a situation that could have comparisons to ours at BP.

Looking forward to his first interviews and hearing what he has laid out for the future.

I'd hope he tries to address the areas of concern during January as much as it is possible in January. We need a poacher, I don't know anything about either Sterling or Asante, are either of them poachers. Maybe we could pinch Ricky Miller from Dover, contract up in the summer, league club comes knocking I'm sure we could tempt him, tempting Dover might be trickier though. We need a new left back, Andrew looked suspect again yesterday for me. The new guy would need to be defensively solid first and foremost and then an attacking threat not the other way around. I feel a Townsend quality player (who could both very effectively) is out of reach. Gowling and Collins seem to grips with one another and we seem very solid again. Hoping Biggers can re-install our attacking prowess and more specifically Bogle's goal scoring form.

Hate to see Omar back defending corners, think that limits him to getting up front quickly.

I disagree with what you say about Andrew. I think he is the best left back we have had in recent seasons [Townsend apart] He does a hell of a lot of work both attacking and defending. If you play 4-2-4 you have to have the winger covering for the full back when he goes forward. We haven't had a proper left winger starting for yonks. I am not blaming Vose because he has been played out of position so lets see what Browne can do. At the moment Andrew is running up and down like a blue arsed fly with no support or backup

Was about to make the same point. Andrew seems to get a lot of undue stick IMO. I think we've looked far better balanced in the last two games and Andrew has played well.

This is the quandary with Vose isn't it. Everyone raves about his ability going forward but it's at what cost? I'm looking forward to seeing a left sided midfielder who can track back so Andrew can show his undoubted ability going forward as well as getting some cover. I remember thinking in pre-season how good he was getting forward and wasn't dissimilar to Conor Townsend in that respect.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with that. Ambition gets you no where without ability. You need both to be fair. But ambition and hard work alone are not enough in any competitive field if you don't have the talent to start with. That's the kind of thinking that leads to talentless oafs making fools of themselves on those Britain's Got X-Factor type shows.

You can do all the planning and all the training you like but one bad deflection or bad refs decision and your bollixed.

I just hope he plays our bloody wingers !

Real talent with bolarwinra and browne and hope he abandons this stupid club policy of playing four central midfielders.

I get the impression he will get the best out of them.

Whilst happy with the appointment of Bignot i cannot help but feel more elated by the non appointments of the likes of : knill , Westerly and Wilcox.
based on nothing other then my own thoughts i would like to think we went for Adkins who told us how flattered he was and then went for Bignot

The boss told me to put it in the corner.....i thought he meant the top corner.

The balance looks better with wide men they make life a lot harder for opposing defenders and (just as importantly) gives our defence more of a break. Without wide men we get stretched and pulled out of shape as proved in the first half yesterday.

I appreciate the club said they wouldn't be giving a running commentary on the appointment of a new manager but surely they should have said something by now?
IF an appointment is imminent which is what every media source and even the prospective manager are saying then surely GTFC could have said something like 'we expect to make a formal announcement on Monday/Tuesday'

Just another example of the magificent fans being treated like shite

PROPER WINGERS, PROPER CROSSES FOR THE FORWARDS !!

You know it makes sense !!!!

No square pegs out of position, please !!

You won't get many of them from Tombola until he learns to look up and pick out a man. He has frightening pace and power but his end product is not there yet and he needs more coaching for me. Twice yesterday he was in a great position and both times the ball went straight to the keeper. There is not a lot of end product from him at the moment and that is probably why he's not a starter and more of an impact sub.

The play two wingers solves everything debate.

So we play two wingers.

Do we play one up front so we can still play a midfield three so we have enough possession to feed the wingers? And if we do, then only one in the box for the cross.

Do we play two up front which leaves us overrun with a central midfield two then no service to the wingers?

We have only one central midfielder who in my opinion has the attributes to play in a central midfield two and that is Comley. Even if we had another, most weeks we'll come up against a midfield three and most likely lose control in there.

Don't get me wrong I don't like to see central midfielders pushed out wide. I'd play Browne in front of Berrett every day of the week. But to play two from the start of a match would be suicidal in the modern game.

Name me one currently successful side that plays two wingers in a 4-4-2. The game's moved on. The mickey was taken out of the formation in the Mike Bassett movie "We're England, we play four four feckin two". That film was made in 2001.

If we play two out and out wingers something's got to give elsewhere.

Browne deserves a start in maybe a 4-2-3-1, 4-3-1-2, 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3 and exciting as he is I think Bolarinwra could be a liability on the right from the start of a game especially with Zak Mills as good as he's been has made only a handful of League appearances.

Anyway we'll have a new manager tomorrow and it should be the end of week in week out 4-4-2 no matter what, square pegs in round holes that we've got so used to in the PH years.

I want to see more of Browne and more of Bolarinwra. But in a 4-4-2 that belongs to the previous century?

No thanks..

Agree with Golfer on this. When we played against Morecombe on the opening day PH played Bolarinwa in front of Andrew, both looked really good. I would really like to see Rhys Browne start he looks like he has something different.

Now seems the media are tweeting a press conference has been called for Monday morning. Shame the club couldn't have told us first even if we all assume we know

The Kingswood Lounge is not closed on matchdays but is only used by a very few people mainly those who have executive boxes. The club charges £150 per season to use the faicility or £8 per game. That is the reason why not many people use it

Lets hope Tombola proves Hurst wrong and is more than just a impact substitution the only way to get match fit is to play full matches.

There will no doubt be a filmed interview with the new manager on MP with Dale asking inane questions like "why did you leave Solihull to come to Grimsby"? Doubt there will be a live link though.

Can't wait to listen to dales dull voice ask the most mundane and uninspiring questions. Really wish we had someone a bit more charismatic asking the questions and someone's who's just a little creative and ask the questions we actually want the answers to. I always enjoy Matt deans interviews. Wish we had someone like Matt doing all the media stuff

If you turned the clock back to 03/04 you'd have had me asking the questions!

Had some good times working with Dale. I got speaking to Tim Harvey at an end-of-season awards thing and asked if I could come down and have a go at asking the questions - and he was like 'yeah, knock yourself out'.

I did it for a season... I fell out with Des Hamilton, and Alan Pouton would never give an interview (always used to threaten to set his dogs on me).

I know its a big step up for Bignot, but I hope he has had the balls to tell Fenty what he demands back from the club, fitness coach comes to mind.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Just because Hurst asked for a fitness coach doesn't necessarily mean that we actually need one. I'm not saying that we don't but people seem to be obsessed by it just because that poisonous dwarf used it as an excuse to leave.

I asked him about an injury that I thought had kept him out of a friendly. He said he didn't have an injury and was just rested.

He was a superstitious man, and said that if he now got injured he knew who to blame.

The very next day he got injured. He genuinely didn't talk to me after that.

He did! We'd just lost 8-1 at Hartlepool and I asked him how he planned to turn it around in our next game. I thought it was a fair enough question but after he answered the question (and when the camera was off) he gave me a grilling for making too many references to our poor results.
