Bullying on this forum

To me it appears that a certain few posters or people cannot do anything right.  They are villified by anonymous keyboard warriers, spouting bile, hatred and abuse, and its getting worse.

Suppose Les Brechin, or Grimsby Pete had said some of the things that Karen Stevens has said (allegedly)
Or Grim Rob, Big Chris come out with the same stuff as our resident Barrymore tribute act.
Say Wrawbs, Barralad said the same as Realityman,
Would they have recieved the same aggression and bullying? some of it is quite personal, and in its own right offensive.

Now I am all for a bit of banter, difference of opinions, and discussion or debate, but to me no matter what some people say they are bullied.  One on one discussion is different, but this can be 20-30 people getting onto one person.
Okay So some people spout crap, I am not condoning any sort of discriminatory abuse, Aaron does say some stupid stuff, but he also comes out with some sensible and well thought out points, but all he gets is abuse.
Realityman really winds me up with his I know something you dont know drivel, but does he deserve all the crap he gets given.  
Karen Stevens may not be the brightest candle in the box, and she may have said something she now regrets in the heat of a bit of banter, but is she the she devil reincarnate?

I am getting rather concerned about the level of abuse levelled at some posters, and could this not be classed as discrimination, in respect of I dont agree with you so i am going to give you grief.

Cant you all live and let live and tolerate other peoples views and opinions, even if they are crap.  You dont have to abuse people.

Well said I've noticed the same pattern on here,  a poster gives a minority view, or a daft post for example and the usual suspects are all over them like flies round notability their bully boy abuse.

I actually quite like abuse as i am usually fishing for a bite but the O.P has a limited point.

The comparison with those that may be seen as the more respected posters does not wash though, most of the respected posters are respected for a reason, they have earned it. Most of the ones listed as targets have certainly given what they receive somewhere down the line hence they receive it back.

Some forums are just boring some have character I don't mind the banter I certainly don't like being told I'm a tawat I'd prefer a more constructive argument rather than being slated for a shite post but hey I'm old enough to accept that not everyone have any respect.

Well, my thoughts are I read this excrement when I'm bored at work so keep it coming. It makes for good entertainment. And as for the bullying, that's balderdash. Don't log in. It's not like any of us are crowding Aaron (as an example) into a corner and nicking his dinner money is it.

I will say, arguing and name-calling goes on on every forum out there, even on the WI forum you get posts like "that's not the right wool you boring f**king ho", but the only times I've ever read threats of actual physical  violence have been on footy boards. Does nothing at all for the stereotype.

Some posters do post just to create the abuse and reaction, maybe to wind up other posters, sit back and laugh at the fallout. Shame more on the posters who get wound up and react in the stronger forms of abuse really. The "debate" on whether or not they deserve it is crazy in itself, if an honest opinion is posted, then vilification on the correctness or origin of the post is wrong, its an opinion. Personally i try to post what i would say in person, that way i'm not hiding behind a keyboard, so to speak/type.

The bigger problem for me is that this is the most popular GTFC forum, and its gone massively downhill in the last year/2 years. I don't read or post as much as I used to and I notice plenty of good posters of previous years are infrequent users nowadays. And there's no doubt that's down to the influx of attention-seeking kids on here.

Every half decent thread gets ruined by page 2 when rattray makes a excrement joke/silly comment/asks if anyone saw him at the game, and loads of people react and the discussion then centres around him. If people ignored the attention seekers or blocked them (like I have recently) this would be a better forum.

Not sure TLM, i have only been rude, nasty or aggressive in my posts to those that have been to me if I recall I think the only person on here I have really been aggressive was roundballovalhole simply because he wasn't contrsuctive in his reply to my posts and called me a few things can't remember what they are, but all forgotten I have an idea which ones are the more respectful posters and those that are non constructive and always negative lol

I relate to most of the sentiments in this post. Technically as Moosey says I'm not sure you CAN bully a user name. I only know a handful of the posters on here personally and have found them to be without exception decent folk. There are a lot of people that I don't relate to but given that I'm in my fifties and a lot of them are my grandchildrens age that isn't really surprising!! I get frustrated when people spoil decent threads with nonsense but the point is in the great scheme of things it doesn't matter. I long ago accepted that I have views that a lot of people don't like. It's a waste of effort trying to either convince people that I'm right or getting upset because people have the temerity to hold another view. These people have no effect on my life as I have no effect on theirs. Neither of us will fret about that.
It's close season-always a bad time for decent threads but in my opinion this board still has a great deal going for it. Some of the humour on here has me regularly laughing out loud and the insight into the game of football that some posters have is terrific. Long Live The Fishy....

TLM has got a point, certain posters can write what they like on here and nobody has anything even slightly negative to say back to them. i havent a clue why this is, maybe because they've got 2 million posts to their name or they're die hard home and away fans and they're held in a higher regard because of it, i don't know but it certainly looks like there is a pally 'in crowd' that target certain posters.

There is so called bullying in all walks of life it only becomes a major issue if it gets physical, I'm not going lie I've been bullied on here if that's what you call it, I've also gave it out in bad taste banter. AS for the elite ha-ha give over who cares really?

Something related to this, is the 'abuse' I got when I broke the news that we was signing Sam Hatton and a left back soon after. Afaik I was the first to break this news, but no-one believed that it would be true, and most people thought that I was infact Aaron, so I didn't bother coming back on here until now, due to me believing that if I broke anymore news, no-one else would believe me that it would be true, so I just keep the news to myself now.

I Googled the definitions of 'a bully' and 'to bully'. The former reads :' A person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker.' The latter : 'To use superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants.' So are those complaining of bullying on this site admitting that they are 'weaker'? I would contend that bullying cannot take place on a message board if those definitions are used. Man-up guys [and gals]. Either fight back [verbally] or use the most effective weapon against bullies ... ignore them!

Of course somebody can be bullied over the internet - I thought we'd moved on from the nonsense of 'Sticks and stones'. As for 'If you're bullied you must be weak' - that sounds like a defence of bullying to me. The OP is absolutely correct in that people are targeted for abuse on here whilst others are effectively immune. I've seen threads where three or four people state a similar opinion which is ignored or agreed with only for the next poster to be shot-down for a similar position simply because of who they are.

If you read those definitions carefully you would have understood that it is impossible for somebody to force another person to do what he/she wants on a message board ... or to harm or intimidate a weaker person. If that poster is confident of his opinion then it doesn't matter what the others say. He doesn't have to respond ... just rise above it. My self-image does not depend on what you or any other poster on here might write ... and neither should yours or anybody else's. The point is you shouldn't have to watch what your posting through fear of being jumped on by a flock of sheep all spouting the same excrement! the point of the forum is for like minded people to be able to air their  opinion freely, but that isn't what is happening is it? I personally couldn't give a monkeys chuff about people spouting off at me and i think the op was actually written by a neutral who had noticed it happening to others, i've noticed it and to be honest it's malicious and personal.

I think I'll just swish things about with my wooden spoon, and see what I come up with here....

Firstly, I'm not sure it's possible for me to 'man up', but I'll do my best.  

I agree with supertown when he suggested the phrase 'not the brightest candle in the box' might just be another kick when someone's down, however inadvertent, but I can also see where the OP is coming from.

It's interesting to see which individuals converge on younger poster(s) for a bit of cyber bullying...and it almost certainly says more about them than it does about the people on the receiving end.  If you like amateur psychological claptrap, here are a couple of theories for you:  1) the bully generally feels inferior and therefore makes a point of targetting people perceived as 'weaker', in order to boost their (the bully's) own self esteem.  Even better when there is an audience involved (eg. on a public forum) because they can then show the world that they are 'superior' to someone else, even if their victim is still just a child.  2) the people who really are made of strong, 'hard' stuff very rarely feel the need to shout about it.  They don't need to convince anyone else... strong, silent types and all that.  Empty vessels really do make the most noise.

Oh and if we're talking about missing posters, I miss davidb (but I think he's just disappeared temporarily because there's no real footy) and Ironsmiler.  I was hoping Ironsmiler might show his face when we played Scunny this week, but he's been gone for yonks.

In the past few months it seems there is a diminshing amount of moderation -- from the actual site moderators, and from posters themselves.    

Not to sound horribly old-fashioned, but there seems to be a lot more rudeness and bad manners on the forum these days, and bullying is  present if somebody feels bullied.    The tone is set from the content that some posters sometimes write and is even present in the sweary or sexual avatars and tag-lines that some use -- the type of stuff that's "not suitable for family viewing" and considered harrassment if present in most workplaces.  

The immoderation may extend to the volume of posts that some make.  I know I get irked that several posters seem to use the forum as a kind of personal twitter feed  of every random half-thought that flits across their minds  (Less is More!) -- which in turn provokes the  immoderation of the 'bullying' kind.

Barralad is right that it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things --  but I know I visit here much less often then previously, and that I'm very selective about the threads I even bother to open.  Crikey,  I've bored myself....

In all honesty a lot of people ask for it on here, and over the years there has been numerous muppets and trolls kicking about on here with the intent of winding others up. To address the like's of Aaron Ratray or Realityman, it's different, although Aaron comes out with some absolute tripe he does post some good stuff, but because his earlier activity and more childish posts has given him a negative repuation on this board anything he does say nowadays, sensible or not gets brushed aside. Realityman annoys me, he talks crap in the most, adds no substance to any of his claims, and generally just irritates most. I find some users are shot down for posts, for example someone hasn't read 6 ot 7 posts down and then posts a new topic about the same subjects, certain users are then happy to jump up and down on there head because the topic was already mentioned. At the end of the day, its banter, and 99% of it I find slighlty amusing, but if some users have issues and problems then they should approach Rob or the other admins, I don't think any of it could be classed as bullying though.

I'm a bit of a gloomy fooker most of the time but a bit of pre-season optimism and good weather has cheered me up a bit.

Something related to this, is the 'abuse' I got when I broke the news that we was signing Sam Hatton and a left back soon after. Afaik I was the first to break this news, but no-one believed that it would be true, and most people thought that I was infact Aaron, so I didn't bother coming back on here until now, due to me believing that if I broke anymore news, no-one else would believe me that it would be true, so I just keep the news to myself now.

One thing worse than bullying on here (and sticks n stones ffs) is thickos who cant distinguish between their own twisted views and facts.

Hahaha, it's because most of the posts you make you tell us how we are linked to A) a player we've never heard of, B) a non existant player or C) a description of a player. Almost 26 years ago my son was born with half-hands and no fingers; we later discovered that he was blind in one eye. A target for bullying if ever there was one! 18months ago he and his girlfriend arrived in South America knowing nobody, with no job to go to, nowhere to live, no Spanish and very little money. Now they live in a gated apartment block [two swimming pools on the roof] with stunning views of the Andes from the picture window of their 18th floor flat.To those who whinge about being bullied on this site I say this : switch off your computers/laptops; get off your backsides and make something of your lives ... then people will respect you instead of bullying you!

Here's my suggestion - all you kind, clever, fair-minded, balanced, humourous, enthusiastic, cynical and literate people defect to the grim outlook site, and leave the bullies and the aggressive and the divs and the illiterate morons to squabble over childish trivia on here. It happened in the early days of the fishy for similar reasons and it would revitalise the GO. Sick of the nonsense threads, the petty replies, the abuse? Go elsewhere, have a laugh and learn something.

The fishy is slowly going down hill, but go to the GO and endlessly talk about sladeisace and have vicious debates about which cheese we'd like to smother all over Miss Cruddas? Nah

The reason for the break away in the early days of the old rivalry fishy was because Billo kept moaning at the non footy content type posts that were very popular but not football.

It was badly handled and BAWB and a few others set up the Grim Outlook and took some of the best posters with him in my opinion.

STB who is still arguably one of the wittiest posters still posts on both forums but some great posters like hang gliding Jesus, Guernsey Mariner, mariner bob, Haddocter and yes Matty mariner/Macca bilk left for good.

It's a pity I enjoyed there input some great banter in those days.

Yes that was the principal reason, but there were other aspects that triggered the breakaway. TEF used to be great but it went downhill fast for several reasons. I was part of that breakaway group after a long time on TEF, and I recently returned (under a different name) to see what the fishy was like, and, generally speaking, I've found it over populated by bullies, aggressive idiots, and childish threads, despite a high traffic turnover. Shame really. The GO is now very quiet too.

Can't argue with any of that Chaos it was exactly the same for me.

Old Macca Bilk would have had a field day with some of these trolls and arron you don't know what a lucky boy you are lol.

In the early days of football forums, the electronic fishcake was a prominent site on the league-wide 'rivals' network. We had a lot of posters, many of whom were clever and funny and lots of banter with visitors, and the popularity/status/traffic of the site was right up there wih the bigger clubs (we were also in the championship at the time). The atmosphere of the forum began to change and those who were essentially the lifeblood of it - perhaps 20/30 posters or so, were increasingly told what they could and couldn't talk about, and where and when they could do it. The admin of the time took against this group and their rejection of the thought police regime, fearing their influence and popularity and eventually we all left and started a new forum (which was brilliant for a time) called Grim Outlook. Over simplified, but in a nutshell.

Interestingly, the fishy is now an 'open form' - ie, any subject goes, just like it used to be before the ideology change that failed (like we said it would). Pigheadedness and self-importance win no arguments.

FFS, I've never met anyone who can honestly say they agree with or are 100% in tune with someone else.  If someone talks/types bollox then they should expect a response, if they can't handle the response then they shouldn't talk/type bollox in the first place.

The ones I feel really sorry for are those who seem to think that Internet forums are a vehicle to display just how intelligent they are (or not as is more often the case).  As for the spelling police, feel free to bash one out every time you point out how superior you are, it proves nothing.

By the way, in line with most Internet users I'll happily own up to possessing a 13 inch pork sword!

I agree with this post but do think as regards spelling /grammar a lot of the posters who get ridiculed could take more time and effort. No one expects perfection and it would be unrealistic to expect as much but there is a basic level surely?
Some people do have trouble reading, some have trouble writing, some find it hard to put their thoughts into words and it's not fair to pick on them.
It seems at times there is a high percentage on here though, either that or they just type and hit send without reading back first.

Some could be plain thick and lazy though.
