I thought England did very well until the final which is a shame.
We battered them for 20 minutes but then lost control, not sure how but I had the impression we surrendered possession and that gave the Italians the confidence to claw back.
As for penalties, never been a fan and would prefer golden goal. Start extra time 9 a side an take two more off after 10 minutes. Down to 5 a side from 20 minutes until somebody scores

Like this a lot, very jumpers for goalposts and rush goalie. It could never happen though.

The thing about penalties is that, when you look back over the last 40 years, WC and Euro shootouts have not stopped the best sides winning the trophies.

So it can't be that much of a lottery. It hasn't stopped the generational talents of France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain from winning.

The shock winners, such as Greece in 2004, didn't even face a shootout in any of their matches. Denmark only had penalties in their semi against the Dutch in 1992, despite it being a very defensive tournament.

The pre-back pass rule problem of teams solely playing for penalties (e.g. Crvena Zvezda in '91 and Steaua in '86) has mostly disappeared.

It just seems that we are the only country (other than perhaps the Dutch) that moans about penalties because of our poor record. The Italians just get on with it despite 1994, 1998, 2008 and 2016.

I look at Pickford and keep screaming a him to give the easy ball to a defender, but no 90% of the time he’s waving his arms about and attempting to kick the ball out off the other end, nearly every time giving up possession. No wonder Kane was knackered chasing after it against 2 big physical centre halves.

We lost to the better team.
For 30 minutes we dominated following that early goal.
Thereafter they pushed us back & frankly outplayed us.
Those around me constantly referred to their dirty tactics.
Nah - Italy have always been defensively cynical & clever.
They got 5 yellow cards to our 1 - we still lost.

The outfield players were often too spread out to make playing it out from the back viable a lot of the time. We still don’t seem to have the habit that the rest of Europe and South America has.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

UEFA team of Euro 2020:

England with the most outfield players selected (3)  Maguire, Shaw and Sterling.

Italy with Donnarumma, Chiellini and Chiesa.

Denmark had Maehle and Dolberg.  (Eriksen could have been in for other reason.  Denmark could have had their other player beginning with D instead of Dolberg.  The one who scored that great freekick against us).

Pogba and Xhaka in midlfield.  Pogba made some exquisite passes and scored a great goal.  But he was instrumental in a poor first half and having a bad attitude when they went out.

Ronaldo selected.

No Spanish, Belgium or Germans selected.   Surprised Pedri (even at 1 not selected in midfield or
maybe Lukaku  in front 3.   Pedri was however, named as young player of Euro 2020.

If Rashford's penalty had been 6 inches to the right we'd have been lauding it as the greatest penalty ever taken by an Englishman. But it wasn't.

It was excrement, he missed the goal. Inexcusable at that level for a forward

Maradona. Baggio. Van Basten.

Some of the very, very best have missed key penalties in tournament shootouts.

What is inexcusable is morons bleating on about him missing.

That’s not the UEFA team is it?

The official UEFA selection sensibly has 5 Italian players including Jorginho and Spinazzola.

Plus Pedri.
