If you have no plan B and cannot score against or beat Braintree, aim to play Dover in the play-offs. Preferably away first and win like VGR did.

Basically the man sounded lost he was STILL lamenting the fact that he could not get a big target man in ???

FFS Hurst work with the tools you have got.

You have wasted money on mediocre players like Hoban,Straker Henderson? Stewart,Jennings............the list goes on.

If the holy grail of having a big target man is your only game plan which seems to be plan A,B and C we are in big trouble.

We have no pace on the flanks against a PART TIME OUT FIT who looked fitter and will be working today this is all very embarrassing.

I find Hurst's comment that he wouldn't put his mortgage on it truly astounding. Regardless of what is said in the dressing room, that comment will get back to the players and what are they going to think if even their manager has no faith that they'll do it? It is Hurst's job to inspire the team, to give them the confidence and belief that they can turn this deficit around and get to Wembley. It was patently obvious how little confidence the team had last night with nobody willing to take risks and how feebly they gave up after 70 minutes. So instead of trying to draw on what little belief remained, Hurst shatters it with an ill-thought and rash comment that was exasperatingly what he probably believes deep down. It was the interview of a man floundering, devoid of ideas and aware that he's 90 minutes away from the losing the best job he will ever have.

The other really troubling comment was that we could go more direct. That is the complete opposite of what we need to do and shows just how little tactical understanding Hurst has. Braintree are set up to force us to go direct, they will eat it up all day Sunday like they have every game this season. They know exactly what we will do because we're so predictable and they know they can keep us out all game without much of a sniff at goal. Hurst needs to do something unexpected that will get them thinking, trying to get us playing in the space between their midfield and defence. He can moan about not having a target man all he likes but it has been his failure to find one. We don't have the players to knock it long like last year so we can't play that way and it's staggering that after an entire season of long balls not working and everyone on here being able to see it, that our so called professional manager cannot.

Instead I really wouldn't be surprised if we were to see Pearson on up top as an early substitute when we're inevitably still trailing the tie on Sunday. Let's face it, both our substitute strikers are pretty shite, I've no idea what's happened to Pittman but he's unfit and useless at the minute. We don't have anywhere near as strong a squad as people make out and our bench is so bad I'd laugh if it didn't make me want to cry. Again, after five years there is only one man to blame for that. And we've got a manager who has always been lacing in any tactical acumen and is thoroughly desperate.

Top post..............

That "go direct" quote worried me too as actually with balls coming in from too deep this season we have been "going direct" and it does not work.

I loathe everything about Braintree especially their handful of leery glory hunting Essex boy fans but I have to give them credit as they set up solid without parking the bus. Also at home they seem to be able to attack well and keep their shape.

We MUST go for it on Sunday. This won't happen but I would go for 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 on Sunday with Arnold just ahead of the mid field 4 behind the strikers.

            Macca
    Toto Shaun Josh
Tait Dis Nolan  Horwood
            Arnold
       Podge Omar.

However I will put my mortgage on 4 - 4 - 2 no changes until 70 mins then LFL with the same shape.

Lets face it this season is over.

Staggering comments from Hurst.

The one that bothers me more than the mortgage one is the more direct observation.

In every single way he sounded a man who has no clue what to do.  His pre-match interview was equally as puzzling.

"Paul Hurst issues rallying a cry to his players"

And so it begins....

MARINERS boss Paul Hurst wants his men to 'believe' they can stage a dramatic u-turn against Braintree in the Play-Offs.

I'm sure I wrote something similar las night as a pi**-take

I was suprised about the mortgage bit and how we are now the underdogs + there's the option to go more direct . Really hoping for short sharp passing football at Braintree like I've seen in a few of the away games , I may be in the minority but still really feel we can do it if we get going , hopefully not just blind faith .

Nah... let's just keep hoofing it. If that doesn't work then pick the ball up and boot it over the bar for a conversion. I used to be proud of following a club that played football. When we've torn teams apart, it's been by playing football. We have really lost our way I feel.

The first words out of his mouth should have been "we're going there to win and will be giving our all to do that" not a negative remark like that mortgage crap.
I think it sums the man up in a nutshell.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!
