Discuss the game against Rotherham here

Hopefully we can get off to a decent start today, getting through without any injuries as well. Would love to see at least one of the strikers score as well

Town Starting Xl: Arthur, Marshall, Wood, Church, I'Anson, Garner, Coulson, Disley, Spencer, Mulready, Eagle.

Subs: Silk, Pearson, Thanoj, Artus, Duffy, Makofo, Hearn.

I suppose it's a little concerning that Dave Moore was wheeling round a defibrilator.

I think it is Conor Marshall, who was a part of the YT team last season, but his contract run out but he was injured meaning H and S didn't see much of him so they invited him back for pre-season. He can play as a right back or a centre back

Why isn't Mckeown in the squad?

The only thing that I can think of is that they want to give Arthur a full match and the next friendly McKeown will get a full game and keep swapping. Unless he is injured, but I haven't heard his is?

Church and disley looking good in the middle.

First time I've seen mulready play and on first impression he ain't gonna pull up any trees in this division. Hope I'm wrong though.

Kenny Arthur also still looks low on confidence and quite possibly one of the worst kickers of the ball I've ever seen.

Scoreline doesn't reflect the game IMO!! Like the look of Disley and Marshall has done well at right back!

Blah blah blah. Have you not got anything better to do with your time? Try finding a hobby it's likely more furfilling than harassing people online. Unfortunately you know you can since nobody in charge on here has the balls to ban you so i doubt you'll ever give it a rest.

Town were poor against a decent Rotherham side who had plenty of pace up front and strength at the back.

Of the new signings I thought Frankie Artus look decent, Disely and Church were not too far behind.

Pearson looked aggressive but I think by the looks of it actual football ability is limited.

Both Serge and Duffy did quite well and that is a bit of a bonus. Despite being on the transfer list they are going to be in with a chance if they show the right attitude.

By the look of it Shouty and Shorty havent decided on a formation.

Anyone know why our subs and management were in the away dugout??

just got back from the game. saw some very promising signs, marshall was a nice surprise how well i thought he did, looked very composed and played the easy ball. church was very good in the middle, mobile and was putting in challenges (good ones) all game long. disley sprayed the ball about abit. artus looks like hes the flair player of the 4centre mid weve got with some nice touches and played one superb killer ball to play in hearn. hearn didnt see much of the game and when he did he hit the post with a good shot. DUFFY played really well for me though today won header after header. UTM

Spencer looked badly out if condition, eagle was poor, coulson not getting in game, Arthur shocking, mulready ineffective, but centre mid had bite and quality and matched rovrum. Deffo a penalty on Hearn player before ball still equals penalty. I thought we got more positives out of today than negative, makofo had a good half, church stepped up to the level, disley very composed and controls middle, Hearn lively and gets in scoring positions. However we need a left back, woods isn't a lb and Ridley injured frequently we can't keep putting a square peg in whilst ridds gets fit n then injured. I'm pleased with effort and players brought in Pearson looked solid, silk solid. I have seen us pay worse in pre season and win then have a crap season, this team won't roll over physically and surrender, and we have a physical presence in the middle. I'm quite happy after today, it's moving forward which is good!

Thought Garner had a decent game, probably my MOTM. Still early to say, thought we looked decent towards the end of the game but a lot of work still to be done. Makofo looked alright but he still divvers too much on the ball, he should have had a shot first time with one chance but left it too long.

Like i say, much work to be done and i still feel we're a player or two too short, perhaps more so now Connell's gone.

I was fairly impressed to be honest. To me the stand out players were Disley and Church.

Church - never stopped running and closing down the opposition.

Disley-  to me looked to have abiltiy on the ball and he distributed it well throughout the first half.

Artus - looked handy when he came on, picking out a few decent throughballs.

Spencer - I was pleasantly suprised by Spencer, as he was more mobile than what I had imagined and he is built like a tank.

Makofo - looked enthusiastic and keen to impress when he came on. He had a couple of runs with the ball and joined in a couple of encouraging team passing moves.

Hearn - looked fit and strong. He was unlucky not to score with a shot from the edge of the area that struck the post, but Duffy put the rebound in anyway.

Garner - was at fault for one of the goals I thought when the striker dropped the shoulder Garner just slid past, whilst the striker had all the time in the world to pick his spot. Other than that I thought Garner played well and he seemed to develop a good understanding with Pearson.

Pearson - looked strong, brave and not scared of anything. Came close to scoring from a couple of corners along with Garner (corners could be nearly as good as penalties with these two).

Wood - was just his usual self (very committed and generally tidy).

I thought we did alright to be honest. Looked more threatening in the second half than we did in the first. Despite the scoreline, I didn't think there was that much between the two sides. They didn't create that much apart from the goals they scored.

I liked the look of the new midfielders. It's hard to see them not being an improvement on what we had last year. Artus in particular came on in the second half and looked a very skillful player. Church isn't afraid to put his foot in and Disley passed the ball around nicely too. Hearn looked lively, has a decent bit of pace about him and had a great effort that hit the post before Duffy tucked away the rebound.

As for the other signings, Spencer will probably be a good target man when he gets match fit as he did win his fair share in the air, Pearson is no nonsense and wins almost every header and Silk didn't stand out but was solid, seems a bit like a right back version of Ridley.

Special mention to Makofo too, he had a good game when he came on. He's definitely a bit of a wildcard in that you don't know what he's gonna next but he's the sort of player worth having IMO.

Really? IMO we matched Rotherham in the first half despite their two goals and played better than them second half.

Players were out skilled by Rotherham but considering this was their first game together they all did OK, we were unlucky not to score more than one goal though.

All in all it was a satisfactory work out, not world beating but OK

what we've got to remember is it was our pre-season game, they've all had 2 weeks solid hard graft on the training pitch without playing much (if any) actual football, so therye gonna be a tad rusty football wise. also a few players out kempo, rids ect.

roll on the next few weeks and 13th august!!

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I definitely think we'll be a threat from corners this year,Pearson looked good in the air and Artus's corners in were alot better then Eagles last year,Hearn also looked good to me,took a while for him to get into the game but when he did he played well, got through a few times and dinked the ball over the keeper.Silk looked solid as many Mansfield fans had said.Church and Disley looked good in the centre of the park strong and good tackles went in,Artus didnt do alot but when he did he was good, put a great ball over the top with the outside of the boot to put Hearn through.Overall thought it was an okay performance as it was there first game together.

Cheers mate, lots of promise in there

Very early days. Today was a fitness exercis emore than anything.

Arthur was at fault for Rotherhams 2nd goal as he shouldn't have been beaten at his near post but generally was fine. He particually swept up well in the first half when the pace of LeFondre and Grabban threatened to get behind us.

Connor Marshall did well enough at right and then, when acting as a rolling sub, at left back.

Garner contributed to their 2nd goal by diving in. What ever happened to 'stay on your feet'? but generally had a good game.

I'anson- did well. I dont see him being a first choice but decent enough cover/back up and will improve.

Wood- he does as you expect. Tries his heart out but lacks a bit of quality and isnt the quickest.

Church- did well, worked hard and probably a better footballer than i expected from the boston reviews.

Disley. Captained the side and looks a good footballer. Wont be long before he gets grief for sideways passes though

Coulson- I like him as a player but today didnt seem able to get into it.

Eagle- did ok. A couple of decent crosses but what the f**k has he done to his hair?

Spencer- slightly worried. Looked the same player i saw at Eastbourne. Huge, but slow and terribly unfit. I hope he can improve because his size will offer an alternative.

Mullready. On todays showing he may be better off as an impact sub in the last 15 than starting. looked a little lost.

Silk- ok. Charged out of position at times but steady.

Pearson. Does what i expected very good attacking the ball. Must have got the end of 4 or 5 corners freekicks. You can see why he has scored so many.

Thanoj- still learning the game but can put his foot in and works hard.

Artus- looked good. Plenty of skill, pace and a range of passing.

Makofo. Fair play to the lad. After the 'mistaken identity' balony he did well. Doesnt always look in control of all his limbs but he caused problems for T'millers.

Duffy- far more effective than the 'bull'. Won plenty of headers and of course was in the right position to tap home our goal.

Hearn- looked quick, a little raw(as to be expected) but defenders will not enjoy facing him

4-4-2 first half and then more a 4-3-3 in the 2nd. We looked more comfortable in the 2nd period but Rotherham may have had a slightly weaker side in the 2nd period.

More positives than negatives but the first pre season friendly will have little bearing on our season

Not in shirt number order

1.Arthur - first and third no real chance, second beaten at near post probably should have done better but overall steady enough.
2. Marshall - very hesitant to challenge, seemed slow (could have been much quicker winger though) and looked out of position
3. Wood - solid enough, determined, played like Bradley Wood
4. Garner - looked slower than last year on occasion but was fairly solid otherwise
5. I anson - looked comfortable on the ball, too comfortable at times which nearly cost him, probably at fault for the first goal.
6. Church - put his foot in, lasted 90, covered alot of ground, supported the front line and most promisingly anticipated well and reacted quickly when the ball was in the mixer
7. Disley - comfortable on the ball (even under pressure), showed for the ball constantly (even under pressure) , used both feet and showed a variety of passing ability
8. Coulson - fairly quiet game by his standard but with the rookie behind him and the rookie in front of him felt he was a little isolated
9. Eagle - genuinely cant remember much of note or much to criticise
10. Spencer - looked solid for 20 mins when the ball was near to him, won his flick ons and lay offs but anything outside of 5 yds of him was a wasted ball
11. Mulready - too small, too weak

12. Silk - half time sub - solid looking, got forward. Wont shirk a tackle by the look of it
13. Artus -half time sub - good control and a good awareness. Maradona roll at one point. Can pick a pass as well as tackle.
14. Pearson - half time sub - looked lean and tall, good in the air, dont think he lost a header defensively and almost scored two from corners.   Very chatty across the backline and recovered his position well when they on the break
15. Makofo - half time sub- left side of front three and i thought he played well, some close control, eager to run at their defence and put in a few good tackles............could we all have been wrong on this one???
16. Duffy - half time sub - as he was last year for me, did something good then did something bad
17. Thanoj - half time sub - played ok, put his foot in and chased and pushed up in support.
18. Hearn - half time sub - right side of front three, assist for the goal after his shot came off the post, not sure that position will suit him best, through the centre for me. Was not that lightening pacey but has a bit of strength and looked confident enough to run at defenders.

All in all several players looked alot better than the shite they have replaced, that may be doing them a disservice on their own ability but i think a bit of perspective is required. The midfield replacements certainly appear to be more competent, control, pass, workrate ability is at least a step up but the lot we had last year were at least a step down from the opposition so lets not get carried away.
Did not see any outstanding pace today which i would like somewhere in the squad.

Despite a 3-1 loss left feeling fairly optimistic.

I didnt go today, but what i have read sounds ecouraging.

It should be remembered that whilst all the players got at least a half, the expected first choice team was never on the field at the same time.

Couldn't make today but reading the reviews I really hope the replacement for Connell is someone with genuine pace. Also, I'm very pleased to hear Makofo and Duffy did alright. Always thought Makofo would be a decent squad player and I would love Duffy to prove me wrong.

Cannot expect too much pace at this stage of procedings really but some encouraging signs. Interestingly the much talkd about "hoofball" was not much in evidence today as they did look to play it around and to feet quite a bit.

Find myself agreeing with practically everything here....bearing in mind Rotherham are a division above us and that we had so many new faces playing together for the first time, I certainly didn't come away feeling disappointed

We had several clear cut chances and thought that had we lost by a bigger margin than two it wouldn't have been a fair reflection of our efforts. On any other day we could have scored three or four so I was in a pretty positive mood at the end.

And despite the odd grumblings I heard around me let's not forget that it was more about getting a game under our belts and the outcome was of no real significance...it was more about what we could learn from the experience

Interesting that the pitch has been narrowed by a few feet.

Decent performance for me - not totally outclassed.  As ever with friendlies you cannot really draw any conclusions and assumptions on what is ahead of us.

Interestingly the much talkd about "hoofball" was not much in evidence today as they did look to play it around and to feet quite a bit.

I thought it was a mixture of the two - we seemed to hit it long up the target men one moment and then we started passing it around with 4 yard passes the next.
As a rule I thought we looked dangerous at set pieces but when it came to open play I thought we wasted a reasonable amount of possession with longball.

I know we have target men but apart from that do we really need to hit it long at all ? Not convinced.

i have noticed a few people are questioning my thoughts

when i said poor i think in underestimated him abit he was as poor as i make out thinking about it now i thought he was quite good he did a terrible free kick did a few dodgy passes but the good points was he supported the forward line he has got good energy he tackles well hes commited and compentant and i think he will become a good player infact i was impressed with all of the new players who played

and i saw mckewon however you spell it warming up and he seemed to be diving around in gaol not saving many shots and i wasnt impressed but he could improve and he was only training so maybe he wasnt exactly trying 100%

and awhen i said we will struggle like what the girl private from sCUNThorpe said, i have got an habit of been influenced by what other people say and i though we looked promising today. in the first half we was still looking like we lack a cutting edge however hearn and duffy changed that

i am a season ticket holder and i always will be one

To be fair to aaron, you couldn't say Church had bagfuls of potential in terms of his passing and skill levels today.
But his work rate and commitment were exemplorary.
Maybe that's what he means.

Again Rattray comments on a player after 5 mins warm up. We all thought McKeown looked sharp n athletic and more agile than Arthur has over several games, but it was only a warm up, so wait n see but after today I can see McKeown being number 1 at the start of the season if Arthur doesn't get his act together n quick!

As an outsider who was at the game today.  I cant see, at this moment what all the bitching / whinging is about really.

It was a friendly after all....  a time to try out the new players with the old boys to see how they gel as a team  / play together.

From what I saw today... You`ve got some players there who can take you back up into the League. ( ie. No. 9.. very impressive ).

I will, from now on visit BP more often to cheer the Mariners on... and hopefully take in a few away games if possible.

Grimsby Town.   Good luck for 2011 /12 season

Unsurprisingly, what looked to be Rotherham's first team caused us problems in the first half and we never really got going up front. That said, their first goal was slightly fortunate as the ball dropped right at the feet of the scorer somewhat fortuitously. The second came after Church was hustled out of it in midfield instead of getting rid of the ball. Arthur will be a little disappointed that he didn't save it.

I actually thought that our poorest performances came from Eagle and Coulson who just didn't do anything much at all. Spencer looked very sluggish but still won his headers so hopefully he can increase his fitness - he is recovering from illness, I believe?

Artus obviously has some ability but gave the ball away badly on a couple of occasions.

I think most of the new players showed that they have something to add and, hopefully, as their fitness improves and they start working with the ball more, they will gel together into a decent team.

It will be interesting to see what sort of striker we go for to replace Connell. Perhaps another quick one?

Apart from the come back which wasn't half bad the first part is woeful.  Grimsby, inbred, not very good at geography or history Gimp boy.  You see Grimsby is a port, a port that is both fishing and trade.  That means our gene pool has mainly a Scandinavian stock that has been added to for several centuries.  Also with the decline of our main industry males and females have moved away then after a time moved back bringing with them fresh genes from other parts of the country or from around the world.

Lincoln has a fresh gene pool each year with the students and Grimsby men going to Lincoln to impregnate the Lincoln ladies because it is rumoured that Lincoln males are a bit jaffa.  Being a bit jaffa is probably why you come across a little angry, what's up, have you found out that your dad's from Grimsby just like Helgy and Aryan

Scunthrope, well there you go, camp sites, a history of being isolated and the sounds of bluegrass drifting over the M180, wind your window down the next time you pass Scumthorpe.

Exactly, personally I thought it was down to Spencer back defending.

I've never liked attackers coming back to defend deep whether it was Connell, Peacock or whoever.
It's been shown before they often prove to be more of a liability than a help.

I hope Church isn't as bad as Rattray's command of English. Is he a poor relation of Wayne's? In fact where is Wayne? At least I understand him.

Today was about the fitness not the performance, that will come with time, they have hardly used any balls in training yet.

Today told me that Disley and Artus have quality when it comes to picking passes. Church will run all day a box to box player. Peasrson is gonna score from set peices. Marshall will be nothing more than back up right back at best, Spencer when fully fit will be a decent target man, Hearn has the potential to score plenty and Mulready is similar to Andy Taylor without any pace and so won't be good enough.

There was more positives than negatives today, but along way to go, and I think we will get it together by the start of season. Could do with one or two more strikers to replace Connell/Mulready and a back up left back.

Having watched today's game, my biggest worry..................where are the goals coming from?
Unless we sign a goal poacher with the Connell money (hopefully) don't know where the goals are coming from.
Pearson at set-pieces, then who?
Hearn looked out of it.
Duffy and Spencer did well winning the balls in the air, but we need someone to feed off them and I don't see we've got that man right now.

To be fair, Hearn hit the post and had a goal disallowed for the keeper spilling the ball. The disallowed goal showed a poachers instinct so I think saying he was out of it is a bit of an exaggeration. Plus, in 45 minutes it's hard for a forward to make a full impact, especially if the service isn't up to standard.

I think it was a decent enough performance, and certainly saw enough to suggest we have every chance of being a force once the fitness comes and the squad gels.

I have  to admit i wasn't there today, went Racing at Rasen, so to be fair i probably shoudn't comment, however if anyone really believes we should turn over one of the favourites for promotion  from FL 2 after 3 weeks of training and many new faces, i think they are sadly deluded, todays game was an excercise for the management duo to see exactly where we are and what formation to play - the result was totally irrelevant - i  already see that  in some quarters the knifes are already being sharpened for the likes of Kenny  Arthur, instead of that, how about encouraging a good keeper back to form? Keeping is about  confidence and if 'fans' are on his back from day one, goalkeeping is a very lonely position, just hope he isn't going to be the next boo boy
Lets just keep our powder dry until all  the friendlies are out of the way before we form an opinion -  after all they mean very little in the lomg term - we will be there, or thereabous this season i am sure of that.

on seeing todays performance I've definitely changed my opinion on the starting 11, and formation. I was very impressed with Artus, although I couldn't see him being very effective in a 2 man midfield as he was pretty poor defensively. Spencer, when he's fit will be decent. He looked a bit overweight and struggled to run (which is a little worrying!) but thought Hearn looked a bit of a handful and had an eye for goal. Duffy did well when he came on but as for the poster who said Makofo excited the crowd, I think I'd describe him as entertaining the crowd (for the wrong reasons). I took my Mrs to the game today (as a treat!) and she certainly found Makofo quite entertaining as a neutral. Disley looks class and exactly what we need in the middle of the park, also think he'd be a great captain. Pearson, Brilliant in the air but less than convincing on the floor. Silk, Steady but isn't that all we need from a right back? Church looked like he's more than capable of stepping up. Technically perhaps not the best, but compared to leary he was Kaka. Broke up the play well, worked very hard and played the simple ball to the more talented members of the team.

So, judging by that, and the fact that Connell's gone I'd probably go with:

                                                                                   Arthur

                                     Silk                  Kempson                     Garner/Pearson                Ridley

                                                                                  Church

                                                            Disley                            Artus

                                           Coulson                                                   Hearn

                                                                     Spencer/Duffy

Banter is part and parcel of the beautiful game however, true iron is a troll who comes from Lincoln.  He rarely goes to games because he is online here making comments during games.  People can respond, interact with him all they like, all I ask is that they don't quote him.  The reason for this is I have blocked his moronic posts as they serve only to drag this great forum down.
