Please don't shoot the messenger. I have just been told that we have accepted £150,000 from Swindon Town for Connell. That there are also extras attached depending on appearances, as well as a sell on clause if Swindon sell him for a profit.

Also that we are getting a striker in return but haven't been told the name of the Swindon striker.

Connell wanted league football closer to his home in Bournemouth.

I am gutted. Bloody gutted. One step forward and three steps back.

From the link...TOWN boss Paolo Di Canio is hoping to finalise deals for two strikers in the coming days, including one who is a proven scorer in English football.

AC, despite scoring lots of goals last season in non league, has not scored all that many before signing for us, meaning he isn't a proven goal scorer, certainly not in league football.

As much as everyone would be sorry to see AC leave, the last thing we need for next season is a player who doesn't really want to be here - i suspect perhaps he was given assurances to move up here to the effect that we would  either get out of this league last season, or at least make the play-offs, we achieved neither and at 29 he is facing another year of BSP Football, 200 miles from where he would prefer to be, although if we were a league club i believe he would still stay.
If he wants to go and we get a decent offer we should allow it , get a replacement and move on - I have followed GTFC for 4 + decades now since a young lad and have seen many good players come and go from GTFC, Alan Connell is one, but the club is bigger than any one player and i just hope IF he goes we d'ont get ridiculous vitiol aimed at the Managers/Chairman ( i honestly belive all of them would prefer him to stay) and the obligatory slagging off of his replacement at every opportunity by the usual suspects..
If we want to get out of this league everyone has to pull together.

Money isn't everything, but for a footballer and someone offers you £500+ more a week even, it would be hard to not want to leave, plus if it's nearer home etc.

Good luck to him if he goes, if he stays all the better, lifes a biatch.

As much as everyone would be sorry to see AC leave, the last thing we need for next season is a player who doesn't really want to be here

Straight out of the John Fenty PR handbook...

Quoted from petethemariner
I have followed GTFC for 4 + decades now since a young lad and have seen many good players come and go from GTFC, Alan Connell is one, but the club is bigger than any one player and i just hope IF he goes we d'ont get ridiculous vitiol aimed at the Managers/Chairman

Already some fans are more bothered about defending the club at all costs than criticizing any lack of ambition.
Yes I know we've shown ambition already, so why penny pinch for another 200K ? (especially when we're paying a fee for Hearn)
Remember there's no prizes for spending £900K and finishing 6th !

Also you say "the club is bigger than any one player"(a tired old cliche) but you also say you believe they want him to stay.
Nice contradiction !

Quoted from petethemariner
i suspect perhaps he was given assurances to move up here to the effect that we would  either get out of this league last season, or at least make the play-offs

So why didn't he sign a one year contract or have a "non promotion" getout clause then ?
It's very simple - he only goes if we let him go.
And there's no evidence he isn't happy here. Even if he isn't, he's no sulker and it's in his own interests to do well !

Quoted from petethemariner
If we want to get out of this league everyone has to pull together.

A few opinions on the messageboards won't affect anything.
You're trying to blame the fans for arguably poor decisions already !

I thought he was staying but the fact the cavalry have already stepped in is concerning me...

Do Swindon have £150k to splash on a striker who has never really scored many in League football?

If an offer of that size did come in then i think the club would take it BUT i just dont see League 2 clubs splashing that sort of cash when there are so many players available on bosmans.

It's very simple - he only goes if we let him go.

80's i can assure you i am no apologist for Fenty and cerrtainly not one of his 'Cavalry' - find one comment from myself on the Fishy to support this claim - thats just  ridiculous.

If you really believe that AC will not become unsettled by interest from  league clubs, many of whom will be from his preferred South, where he has previously spent his entire career, then you are being nieve, he is approaching his 29th Birthday, wants league football and wants it quickly - i am not suggesting that if he stays he will not try, but if his motivation drops one notch, he will not be the same player.
On the point of lack of ambition by the Club - my understanding (please correct me if i'm wrong, which i'm sure you will) is that AC has one year of his contract left, i d'ont think its rocket science  to realise  that the likelyhood is  that  he would be heading back South at the end of it for nothing, so it would make  financial sense to accept a 6 figure sum if one is offered, every club, including Prem clubs realise this.
If you think that fenty and Co will bail out the club from 6 figure losses every year indefinitely, you are sadly mistaken - this is why i have used the 'tired old cliche' maybe i am wrong in believing that Fenty  and S & H want him to stay, but even if they d'ont, a decent fee for a  perhaps  unsettled player, who apparently c'ant or  w'ont commit himself to us publicly, which we will not get this time next year, would make  good business sense.
Neither you are me  were privvy to the agreement  between AC and GTFC when he moved 200 miles North, but i cannot believe that he came here for the Haddock, you say its 'in his interests to do well' he did just that  last year and that has attracted interest from other clubs, one year at GTFC has given his career, which TBH was going nowhere, impetus and i would expect he will want to take advantage of that.
One last comment - Alan Connell is a   very good footballer, but we have had many better at this club, all of who have left at some stage - its a fact of life, we have to move forward, with or without him.

At last , an intelligent appraisal of the situation. Too many fans read between the lines and interpret club, player and management statements different ways. I have not seen anywhere where it was stated by any of the parties involved that AC wanted away . Yes , he did say he would prefer league football ,if the opportunity arose , but that  is not the same thing as saying he wants to leave. If he does go and the fee is £150,000 then I would think that was good business considering we got him for nothing. He could stay, not be the same player next season and leave next June for nothing.

Swindom were dreadful last season. The club is in a mess from what I saw on The FL show last season. They sold all the best players the season before that and never replaced them.

I can't see Di Canio doing much, he is to volitile imo.

They will buy fallen Itlains and when it gets to tough they will run away.

Pete I never meant you were one of Fenty's cavalry, just one of the cavalry.
I mean there are a lot of people who like to defend decisions the clubs makes.
If that's not you but it's our own view then I apologise.

Quoted from petethemariner

Well I don't expect the same wonder-season he had anyway, but I still think his class will be an asset.
Look at it this way - if most believe we will be around the playoffs then wouldn't keeping our top goalscorer make doubly sure of a playoff place and almost repay itself ?
And I appreciate your logic but I don't think I am being naive.
You say "unsettled" but you say you're not suggesting he won't try and that's my whole point.
Yes there are always "risks" but equally, there is no risk if we decide to sell ?

Quoted from petethemariner

Well firstly, the fact you've assumed he could be heading back down south instead of playing League 2 football with us says something about our ambition.
If you want a fee, there's a chance to wait until January and see where we are...

More importantly, I don't think it would make financial sense.
We're talking about £100,000 when the playing budget is £900,000.
Had the playing budget been £1,000,000 instead of £900,000 would you have been up in arms about it ?
I doubt it !
As I've said elsewhere if the club need to sell for £100,000 then why was the budget set at £900,000 and not £800,000 in the first place ?
Who knows there may be internal cashflow factors but from where I'm standing the whole logic makes little sense...

Quoted from petethemariner

IMO this has been the trouble of the club for too long - in for a pound but not in for another 10p.

I don't doubt that, but like the club have said today, you don't simply roll over just because a player wants to play at a higher level, especially if the player has siad he is happy here.

Quoted from petethemariner

Not in the BSP we haven't.
I'd guess if we fall short of promotion this season, I doubt we ever will.

I just think we're in a really strong position for the playoffs with Hearn and Connell.
When we're finally taking big steps forward, why oh why do people want to weaken our firepower and take us a step back ?

If he does go and the fee is £150,000 then I would think that was good business considering we got him for nothing.

But the overriding FACT is that given all the "good business" we've done over the years(obviously that doesn't include players like Ryan Bennett), we're in financial trouble losing money whilst we're in the BSP.
Let me ask you, how are we gonna plug this financial gap year upon year whilst we're losing money in the BSP ?
Unless S&H are wonders in the transfer market or a youth team gem emerges, we won't !
Surely the answer must be to get out of the BSP asap ?!!

I also feel the club have got it's knickers in a twist and trying to fight a war on two fronts.
1) promotion. 2) trying to tighten our belts. Surely you can't realistically do 2) and hope to achieve 1), the 2 don't mix !

Quoted from rancido

Come on, cemetries are full of indispensible people. The team will still function. I am sure S & H had plans to cover the loss of Alan as it was always going to be a possiblity for the right money. If the right offer has come in then town should accept it and move on. I reckon Hearn's signing was as a potential replacement for Alan.

I find that rather curious logic.     100k is 100k and where we are we are a selling club for that sort of money particularly as we now have Hearn on the books.  I  find your logic flawed because the club is budgeting to lose 800k this season and if it only lost 700k that must be better, reducing the anticipated loss must surely be a good thing particularly i it does not affect the playing budget. I would not expect the money from his transfer to go into the player budget.

Having said that I hope we can resist the offers, but it must be very tempting.

I agree but what is the plan to avoid financial strife though icey ?
Even Pete says don't expect Fenty to finance the club forever....

We can sell our best players til the cows come home but with no Ryan Bennetts on the books, how is the club gonna survive long term if we don't get out the BSP ?

I would be very shocked in Connell is still a Town player come Sept 1st.

We will get an offer for him which, in light of his desire to move on, will be accepted. I also dont see him fitting into H&S's style of play. Not strong enough nor quick enough.

I would also say that promotion back to the FL will not wipe out the ongoing loss and may even increase it!!

I'll suggest how it could be done icey....

Short of a massive offer at the very least don't sell Connell until Jan.
Wait til such time that Scott and Hurst can be seen to know what they're doing then increase the playing budget by £200K ! (if possible)

The better the squad, the bigger gates and more chance of a decent cup run and promotion via the playoffs(or better) and more revenue.

Let's speculate to accumulate and get us out of this league !
If it doesn't happen then slash the budget and put our faith in youth/younger players.

Kris how on earth is being in League 2 instead of the BSP gonna increase the clubs debt ?!!!

Same old story, success on the field = greater attendances= less deficit.   Ofcourse the deficit is there and won't lessen by much and thereby hangs the lot of all league clubs in the lower divisions. A new ground with other income streams would help but at the moment we have a noose round our necks.

It is a difficult one with the ground, we need one but until investment of a large scale comes about in the area it may be a while before it happens

You're welcome Pete, I enjoyed it too.
We'll see what happens and with a bit of luck these managers can change our fortunes.

Well said that man, roll on Aug 13th

Thank you for both starting a thread and bumping this one to shed light on 'Career Underdogs' wonderful prediction. One thread is simply not enough to commemorate this marvellous occasion!

This is one case where the money is worth more than the player.

There was no guarantee that Connell would be the same player this season and by any standards £100-£150k is good money for a 28 year old with one year to go on a contract.

Good business, good luck to the player, good for the managers that it happened now.

The club is more important than any player.

I'd go with this post as it just about sums it up for me.  Good luck Al and thanks for some quality goals, my Swindon supporting mate will be chuffed.

Does Connell realise that he was their fourth or fifth choice target after they missed out on their preferred strikers?

Being the type of player he is. That should only drive him on to prove he should have been top choice

Any news on this one CU ?

Quoted from Biff98
If CU is telling the truth for once then I reckon it's Billy Bodin heading this way! Highly rated yougster welsh under 21 player and top scorer for reserves and youth side in 2009-10

Wonder if it's this guy...

I honestly don't think CU predicted this correctly from inside knowledge. Look at his record before, if he was right often we'd have Steve Evans in charge, a dodgy Icelandic owner among other things. If this had been on the cards when he predicted it I'm sure somebody who is actually in the know would have heard something and there would have been a few whispers, in this day and age it is very unlikely that a transfer like this could have been going on in the background for 3/4 weeks without it slipping out a bit. All CU did was pick a southern team that was in L1 or L2 and make up a transfer fee, the transfer fee was wrong despite what people have been thinking and there aren't that many teams in the market for a striker that he could have picked. He took a guess and was right for the first time in about 100.

But that's the bit that sticks out and everyone seems to've forgotten all about the complete bollix he posted before (many times) not to mention the many snidey threads trying to be contentious and create a bad atmosphere.

What motivates these people? Don't they ever think about what they're spending their time doing and question whether they're not just a little bit odd?
Huge real-life deffinciencies in something or other is my guess.
