It's not a tragedy it's a moment for pay our respects and celebrate a long and successful life.

Postponing sport is ridiculous. A minute's silence would suffice.

We don't postpone games when real tragedies occur like Grenfell or terrorist attacks.

They won't be cancelling work for the next two weeks so why cancel people's enjoyment. It's an archaic mournfest.

A period of cap doffing, fawning deference is needed to make sure we know our place.

Can't have us plebs enjoying ourselves.

Its the St Leger on Sat, the worlds oldest classic Horse race, i think the Queen, a massive horse racing fan, would be horrified to think it was cancelled because of her passing, i just hope  the 'powers that be' can get a sense of perspective and realise that despite all of our admiration for her, she was 96 years old and very, very few reach that age.

It looks likely that the funeral will be a week on Saturday. It would make complete sense to postpone games tomorrow and that day or even that weekend so that there is a full programme one midweek. Everything else is excessive. The FA gave guidance for Man Utd and West Ham to play tonight so hopefully that’s a precedent set and we can play this weekend.

I'm finding it all a bit bizarre. For me cancel everything when her funeral is taking place (for example if it is Friday at lunch time cancel everything around that time 3hrs either side or something) nothing should be cancelled this weekend. Everything should go ahead as normal but put on a special performance or silence for her majesty

Queen is dead, no fun allowed for 2 weeks. Have to make sure the public know their place and that a rich old lady in a shiny hat is more important than everyone else. The BBC even said the cost of living crisis pales in comparison to the Queen dying so that pretty much shows where the priorities are. Your grandmother freezing to death because she can't afford to pay the gas bill is nothing compared to the rich grandma of people who did nothing to earn their wealth and power other than win the genetic lottery.

We all know they’ll bottle it and just cancel the fixtures. We must all be miserable and sit and pretend to mourn.

As mentioned, genuine disasters take place an we crack on, this should be the same, and in truth, she’d probably want them to given she was a big sports fan.

I guess it’s another way to keep the commoner under control. You will mourn the loss of a shiny hatted old lady and you will remember your place.

Play the games, have a minute silence, even sing the dreadful national anthem if you want and crack on. Cancel sport yet literally everything else carries on as normal.

She was 96, lived a great life and we should celebrate that. It's not like she died very young. Minute silence, schools to teach children about her history etc and then we move on

Herein lies the problem, the London Bridge has fallen, the decision made about the length and effects of mourning of our longest serving monarch will be made without asking the family what their wishes are.
The way the queen has conducted herself throughout her realm has been for benefit of the people of this country, she's served us tirelessly, even 48 hours before her demise she was still doing her duties with a smile on her face.
So rather than the Premier League or EFL making a decision on upcoming fixtures, why not ask Charles, William et al what they'd like to happen, for all we know the old gal probably said the words as my dad..." Don't mourn my passing, celebrate my life, raise a glass and get p!ssed, I'll see you all again one day"...

The FA, EFL, premier league etc… won’t do anything that will see them criticised so I’d set up for a free Saturday afternoon this week at least.

You’re not nearly cynical enough…we don’t stop for those events badges as wartime spirit and blitz spirit when in truth it’s because its poor folk. Average joe.

Keep us serfs down, you will mourn whether you like it or not. Oh, but if you could continue to go work and ensure the economy continues that would be lovely.

And probably next Saturday too as I suspect it will be the day of the funeral.

For perspective, it’s the first time a monarch has died in most of our lifetimes. It’s more important to some than others, I get that, but show some respect, it’s a bit more important than Grimsby v Crewe, which will, after all, get played in due course.

Is it more important? Probably not. By that token I’d say that we shouldn’t be going to work (which is essentially what footballers would be doing) or pubs/restaurants should be shut.

Yes, I agree it’s the first time in the vast majority of peoples lives that this has happened but it’s also 2022. Many aren’t fussed either way about the monarchy.

If they blew up a couple of building today instead of the queen dying would they cancel them? Certainly not.

Play the sport, even badge it as ‘mourning collectively’ or whatever. Sadly, with not a back bone between the leagues and officials I suspect a Saturday of nothing.

Police are going to be needed in their droves in London. PL and EFL would face a lot of criticism if they didn't call everything off. Non league might survive.

I get that. And I’m pretty sure a lot of sport will go ahead tomorrow because the logistics of cancelling all sport when a lot of travel has already been made is going to be very expensive.

The point is that it’s not up to us. Lots of stuff to be considered, I’m pretty sure The Queen wouldn’t want the St Leger cancelled on her account as an example.

Sssshhh urine off with your facts will you. You know what it’s like now with these grand outpourings of pseudo emotions and social media hyperbole.

I’ve said time and again I’d abolish them but a s human is no wish her dead and if one thing sticks in peoples minds it should be that image of her, sat alone, a vulnerable old lady who’d lost her husband…and then remember what her flipping disgrace of a government were doing at that point. There should be equal measures of outrage and sorrow…there won’t be though.

Probably the likes of the Mail and Express would really do their best to whip up some outrage as well. I'd imagine they weren't as nuttily reactionary 70 years ago (the Mail's support for the fascists notwithstanding).

With it being late on a Thursday (her death), I’d say it would be nigh on impossible to cancel everything, although I notice that this evenings games have been postponed in the championship and league 2.

For what? The place gets hundreds of thousands of visitors every Saturday & Sunday, how is this weekend any different other than they’ll all be stood outside an empty mansion at the end of The Mall?

It’s like waking up in Pyongyang this morning, absolutely batshít.

It's an obvious target for terrorists as well as thieves, pickpockets etc. There will be millions of additional visitors, not all wanted.

The police might actually have some real work to do rather than pretend football fans are criminals

I remember us playing a league cup match against Sheffield United a few hours after 9/11, that wasn't serious enough to cancel sport but an elderly queen dying is? I get that there is a grieving family and many people admired and appreciated her but let's not slip into North Korea style contrived mourning. Life goes on and so should sports

There’ll be an influx but nothing out of the ordinary, multiple events take place at the same time in London and things aren’t cancelled elsewhere.

Forced mourning is ridiculous.

They all live to be near 100. It's easy to do when you have the best of everything, they have their own private supermarkets that the public can't use that has the best food money can buy, they get the best medical care and don't have to worry about getting sick or having to wait years for needed surgery or being fobbed off by the NHS leaving conditions to get worse. The best part is they don't have to pay a penny for any of it as public taxes foot the bill along with tourism. You can argue the royals are diplomats that promote our interests as a country but most countries hate us because of the monarchy and their compliance with every crappy thing we did because it benefitted them, they get the best of everything and endless free trips abroad to stay at the best hotels and homes, VIP treatment and the best of everything anywhere they go just because.

So instead of the Queen's speech we'll get the King's speech at Christmas this year. Expect it to be more of the same patronising about how we need to come together as a nation and how we need to do more for those in need while the King sits next to his solid gold piano with ivory keys on his seat that's worth more than most people's entire houses.

I don't think certain other countries hate the UK because of the monarchy. It's because of the many shitty things our forefathers did in the name of Empire. It wasn't the Royals of the time telling our respective Governments who to invade and occupy - they did that themselves.

Regardless of what decision is reached, you would have thought a steadfast plan would have already in place given the inevitable nature of this event. No announcement thus far suggests there isn’t a clear and straightforward consensus.

The Northern Irish FA has postponed this weekend’s fixtures; I can only see ours doing the same.

Glanced at something earlier that said the government will leave it to the leagues or clubs themselves to decide. Unsurprised to see the govt shift responsibilty onto others if true and will probably mean it is called off because they won’t want the social media backlash.

Guy from the DCMS on Talksport right now suggesting that the “strong advice” from the government is that this weekend’s fixtures and any on the day of the funeral are postponed, with “latitude given” regarding those in midweek.

Sporting bodies do not have to abide by that advice, but the government’s recommendation is for “a period of intense mourning”.

DCMS?

Are they Trevor Sinclair’s initials?

Is ‘Trevor’ just a nickname?

If that’s the government’s advice then they’re not reading the room. Ben Stokes has just tweeted that the Queen was a massive sports fan and it would be an honour to play in her memory.

It's a pity that Nadine Dorries is no longer the minister there. You can only imagine some of the half-drunk whacky nonsense she would have come up with. Sorry, soon to be 'Lady Dorries'.

Suspending the day of the funeral makes a bit more sense, todays not any kind of official day and tickets have already been purchased. Doesnt seem in the queens 'stiff upper lip' image to just scrap everything for 2 weeks

I think the EFL should sit tight for a bit and wait and see what happens with tomorrow's St Leger at Doncaster. The Queen was a huge horse racing fan and I doubt she would be happy if it was cancelled as a result of her death. If the St Leger goes ahead then there's no reason for the EFL to postpone a whole round of fixtures.

intercourse off with your sensible suggestions. We all know the football league will excrement a brick because they’re worried about the flag shaggers clogging their social media channels…

It will be an absolute ridiculous decision if all games are called off, I know some people want to sit on their sofa and cry buckets whilst watching the TV all weekend, but others don't, let us all pay our own respects if we wish, if people want to go to a sporting event like I do, then that should be fine, also if somebody wants to sit on their sofa with the tissues out again that's fine, don't force us all to mourn.

The EFL will ultimately follow whatever move the Premier League makes, and I wonder if that’s the hold-up. In a season already badly disrupted by a ludicrous November / December World Cup, blanket postponements (potentially beyond this weekend) are the last thing they will want.

I expect the clubs themselves will want to play; it’s a case of weighing that up against the potential backlash.

I am a total fan of the Queen and the Royals that actually get off their arses and do something rather than the string of leeching hangers on but you've hit the nail on the head with that.

I'm a royalist, 100%. I cannot see any reason for tomorrows and mid-week games to be cancelled. If the funeral is next Saturday you don't have to go to the game but 5 mins silence would be appropriate, any noisey people kick em out.

I don’t know if this means the funeral won’t take place next weekend now cause surely the PL wouldn’t moan about congestion and then bin two fixtures off in a week at that short notice.

EFL Statement:

"Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend."

This just makes me even more determined to get rid of the royal family and turn this country into a republic. Absolute joke. If they didn't cancel the football when the last two monarchs passed away, why should it happen now? Zero precedent for this and all it does is mess the public around. It's entirely possible to show respect and mourn the Queen while letting football go on as scheduled.

Apparently the earliest possible date for the funeral is Monday 19th, although with her death being in Scotland, it could take place a day or two later:

I’d imagine they’ve done this to ‘protect their image’ and probably can’t be arsed to deal with the flag wavers and bulldog tattoo types ploughing in to their social media accounts claimin they’re unpatriotic…

Just play the games, have a minutes silence, the end…

I disagree about the republic bit as it's not the Royal Families fault that games are off but do agree they should be played especially in a time when for some this is the only highlight they may have to look forward to at the moment.

Agreed…such a weird decision. With more and more of the country being republicans you’d imagine they’d just play, especially as the royal family haven’t requested it…they played when her old man died and you’d imagine almost everyone was a monarchist back then…

Well this is a bit disappointing.

I'm neither pro or anti Royalist, they are who they are and generally speaking have no direct impact on my day to day activities.

I get that some people - possibly those slightly longer in the tooth - may have more deeper rooted connections and sadness with the Queens passing and for me that should be fully respected.

However, in my opinion, we live in a society that is too fast paced to stop and mourn/reflect/care about situations that don't directly affect us. That isn't to say people aren't or don't recognise the sadness of the moment, but I'd suggest the vast majority recognise that life will go on.

Life today is vastly different to 70 years ago, I know I'm stating the obvious again. We're largely a 24/7 society, Amazon, supermarkets, social media, we're constantly on the go doing something and unlike 70 years ago I don't think as a generation we have the same capability or desire to simply stop what we're doing to act mournful, especially if we don't feel it.

There's recognition that those at the highest levels of control will want to lead the country in a means of being mournful and most certainly should be showing the Queen the huge respect she deserves for her service by providing the means for those who are in genuine mourning to do that as best possible in as many ways as possible.

But as many here have argued, that shouldn't be an enforced rule for all. Life goes on and the world keeps turning. I would argue that football fans across the country would not be making a pilgrimage to London to pay respects, but would see fit and right to observe a period of silence in her memory and honour.

It's not a decision I agree with personally, even if it's somewhat understandable that this was always going to be likely. Hopefully Tuesday will not be affected and the footballing community can demonstrate it's respect in games across the country.

In a bizarre twist, all horse racing cancelled tomorrow but the St Leger rescheduled for just 24 hours later.

Excellent post. I'm not surprised by the decision but disappointed that it doesn't reflect modern society.

Classic decision of trying not to offend those who trade on being offended.
You want to mourn and show your respect in your own way, fine.  It you still because you do, don’t expect me to. It is no better than me driving round blaring out certain Smiths and Sex Pistols songs.

I wanted to show my respect with a minute or two’s silent reflection at tomorrow’s match. Now I can’t.

I’m telling ya, this is intercourse all to do with respect or out of some sort of allegiance to the queen and everything to do with their image and the fact they don’t want to deal with the flag wavers and those who think we should all sing our hearts out for some old lady battering their social media pages…

It's mawkish nonsense. Queen loved her sport. Cancelling the games neither shows nor creates more respect.

I personally don’t have a problem with people mourning on an individual basis, it’s a natural human reaction so do what you will.  What I do have a problem with is the ‘institution’ telling me I have to mourn.  The fact is that She didn’t work harder than my mother or your mother, nobody forced her to live the life She did, we’re simply told to mourn by a bunch of hangers on who live their lives within a comfort blanket of privilege that an unelected institution provides.

I bear the late queen no malice, she did me no harm, but her passing has no greater or lesser significance than the passing of any other non-relative.

And yes, if there was a referendum tomorrow on abolishing the monarchy, I would be staunchly in favour.

Apart from your bit about the royal family, I agree with what you say.

It is not the royal family's fault, nor the politicians (for a change) but the EFL. We know from last season how spineless the NL officials were and the EFL lot are just the same. It's the fans that suffer all the time.

It’s a catch-22 for those types as they’d never miss a chance to sing the national anthem in public.

'Those types'???

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Good post but to me it’s more than disappointing. Haven’t we had enough of lockdowns? People without a choice  will have to go to work tomorrow, as in the lockdown. The rest of us should be given the choice. Any players who didn’t want to play could have been stood down. I doubt that any would choose not to play. Football clubs are the heart of many communities and, in terms of coming together to show the due respect to a wonderful person, what better than at a full Blundell Park and it’s equivalent across the country.

This is the Etonian elite types dictating. I doubt the Queen would have wanted any part of our normal life to stop.

The RFU have confirmed Rugby will go ahead this weekend, meaning the useless twits at the FA have yet again got a decision wrong. There’s absolutely no reason to have come to the conclusion they have.

It’s nothing other than a desperate attempt to not offend people, what a world we live in.

Except that's exactly what they'd be doing if sports and other things are cancelled.

They are not forcing you to mourn.

What did you do if a game is postponed because of the weather, drop to your knees wailing like intercourse slapping your head.

Go out and do something else to make you happy if you want it's one or possibly 2 games for frigs sake.

On the good side, there is another recovery week for injured players to have if tomorrow had players with knocks or twinges.

Another week of training for Otis, another week nearer to McAtee's recovery, another week to assess Pepple's injury and recovery time, another convalescent week for Scannell.

Another training week for the new young forwards to understand formations and set plays, positioning etc.

Not ideal with the current winning of games situation, but perhaps more intense training and tactics training will pay off in the future months.

I think you need to consider your logic. If nothing else is being cancelled for him to potentially go and enjoy, why isn't he being allowed to enjoy himself at the football in the first place?

We all know from experience that nutters were running the NL. We wondered upon what basic fundamentals they based their decisions on and now we know. They follow the EFL.

One or two or three games when we're bang in form. That's the kick in the teeth for me. I wouldn't be as bothered if we were in a slump but we're on an upward trajectory right now and I think we were nailed on to get our first home win of the season.

Lots of pressure on football as it's the most popular and widely attended sport. Pretty much all 92 teams scheduled to play this weekend plus 72 teams across the  NL, NLN and NLS which are well attended.

It seems to me that football felt under pressure to make a statement, anticipated other sports not going ahead and now looks a bit silly.

I read it as each individual sport making a gesture, so no cricket today but back tomorrow, same as the golf at wentworth
What really annoys me is the people making these decisions being so out of touch with what “ordinary” people think. I’m apathetic about royalty but would have observed a minutes silence tomorrow with good grace.
The government/EFL have this badly writing my opinion, especially after the last 3 years when we’ve been locked up for varying periods, unless you’re a government minister of course

I think the only way to end this bickering is to all meet up in Sydney park tomorrow and have it out once and for all, left v right, royalists v republicans, momentum’s v new Labour, beetroot sandwich eaters v stone island wearers, after this we can move on and talk about football again. UTM

Either all sporting events this weekend needed cancelling or all needed to go ahead.. to just have football off makes no sense..

Exactly - I suspect the Premier League and the EFL wish they’d hung fire until other sports had announced.

Can’t the EFL/PL just refer the decision to VAR and get it overturned. Clear and obvious error.

Intense mourning…what even is that. By this afternoon people will just be cracking on and doing what they need to do.

flipping lunacy…

I havnt even blinked yet.....I do realise that she was a cultural global  figurehead and acknowledge her importance to our nations image....but ..... her and her family just mean nothing directly to me.

Let’s face it, the footballing authorities jumped the gun and expected everyone to follow suit and they didn’t. They’re too spineless to admit a mistake so we’re now facing an unnecessary weekend without football…

Quite amazing people didn't realise that it was formality that the matches would be cancelled.

Not sure how I feel about this, won't be happening now anyway due to the Crewe game being cancelled:

I know someone who usually says politics should stay out of football who thinks it’s ridiculous that anyone would complain about mandatory fixture changes for a nation’s head of state 😇.

Hope it’s just this weekend and they have a good minute’s silence next weekend in her honour.

Just come back from the local rec ground walking the dog and I was absolutely enraged that an under 10 hockey game was taking place, these people need to understand that there should be no fun ( and games) during the “ national period of mourning”, fully expect the police will be issuing the same fines they did for covid breaches.

So what did everyone do today instead of being engrossed with football??

I found that I had an extra day to begin emptying my office of furniture prior to going back to a home office basis at the start of October.

Saving £300 per month + travel expenses will be important over the next few months.

It’s decent isn’t it?

Town fans do get everywhere, bizarrely the saddest looking person I saw yesterday was a STH who’s was clearly saddened but the fact we weren’t able to go watch town.

As predicted by many of us though, the decision to curtail this weeks fixtures was nothing to do with respect and all to do with protecting an image…

To be fair, it’s be easily done. You’d never know the Met Polive shot an unarmed man, a person was arrested and released regarding the Arndale bombing, they’re still looking for witnesses and suspects in the shooting of an innocent 9 year old and we’re still in the middle of a serious energy crisis…

I saw a lot of Town fans at the Women's Euros at Rotherham and Sheffield. I was surprised how many Rotherham/Barnsley/Blades/Owls football fans smiled and warmly said 'Up the Mariners!' Or 'Welcome back' when they saw a Town shirt.

I think postponing games was a real own goal. It would have been a good opportunity to give Elizabeth II a good sending off for those who wanted to. I think the FA did it to avoid potential criticism too. A really craven response.

Anyway, looking forward to another ice-hockey game.

Two minutes silence was impeccably observed and fans were given a picture of the Queen to hold up at this time if they wished to do so.

For anyone interested to know how Ray Parlour spent his weekend without the football whilst downing a glass in tribute....

For all the decision by the authorities was absolutely the wrong one, I dare say a weekend without being dominated by kick off times has been relatively relaxing. God knows how people do this every week mind.

With Scunthorpe not playing yesterday it means they went an entire week without losing. So it’s their longest unbeaten spell of the season so far.

Looks like more potential disruption next weekend for London fixtures

https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/news/premier-league-consider-london-stadium-24987289

This makes the decision to postpone this weekends fixtures even more illogical. Next weekend was always going to preparations for the funeral with a much bigger influx into London than this weekend.

Let’s hope one of the snowflakes on here doesn’t repeatedly call Jason a ‘rat wánker’.

I'm looking forward to seeing what some people have to say about Jason being saddened by her passing. Very well written article, gets the point across and sums up the feelings of many. Like him, I love the noise at the end of a minutes silence, a collective cheer from all four corners of the ground.

You’re not suggesting the footballing authorities couldn’t organise the proverbial are you? That they thought and care about their image above anything else?

During the closed season I’m alright because I’m prepared for it but yesterday was odd. Wasn’t like a game called off for weather and therefore other games were available, it was just bizarre.

I know there were foreign games which were great but it’s never the same.

I do agree that there was a great opportunity missed; having seen the footage of the cricket, you don’t have to be a monarchist to feel the emotion in that crowd. Nobody was forcing anyone to sing the National anthem or whatever but it looked and felt mega, even watching at home. Now imagine that across the footballing pyramid…

Massively missed opportunity, ironically, worrying about their image when they could’ve improved it even further…

The football authorities got it wrong, big time last weekend. This coming weekend they have the opportunity to rectify their mistake but according to The Mail, they may not and once again postpone all matches.

I think it's about time for those in charge of football to be replaced.

The idea that some of the London games be postponed has a small amount of credibility but other than that, it’s completely pointless to postpone them, as it was this weekend.

I don’t buy the story that there’s not enough police. It strikes me as an easy get out for the authorities to protect themselves from the apparent embarrassment that the people they’re supposed to represent might cause them.

I went to my first ice-hockey game-Sheffield Steelers v Cardiff Devils.  I'd go again.

I saw another Town fan there. We get everywhere.

I go to the Panthers in Nottingham every now and then (my brother lives there) and it's a great evening out.  I particularly like how the stewards won't let you back to your seat until there's a break in play, less people spoiling the view going for a pint mid-game.

Are we sure on this though - do we know this wasn’t a case of “it’s your decision but we really think you ought to call all fixtures off”?

I'm going to have to watch a Steelers v Panthers game. I gather its a grudge match. I picked up on the fact that my view wasn't obscured by constant traffic between seats. I was one of a group of three who went out of desperation to see some live sport though the others had been before. It was a relief to make good use of Saturday.

I was going to be writing match reports for four matches over ten days including Grimsby Town Women at Thackley yesterday but three have gone by the wayside so far.

I've seen 3 of those steelers v panthers games, 2 of them were more like the UFC than hockey and the other one they seemed to have forgotten it was a grudge and just played like normal. The motorpoint in nottingham empties right into the city centre though (near enough) so perfect for a night out after.  And Annie's burger shack round the corner does cracking meals.

No I haven't, heard it can be a bit feisty. The Crumbie terrace at Leicester is a bit more civilised perhaps - it comprises of 4,000 "referees".
