Potentially vaguely relevant if she were to pass away, as there’ll be no games at the weekend if so.

Really? I'd expect a minute's applause then crack on with the kick-off

Nope. All sporting fixtures cancelled.

It’s not looking good.

Disgusting lack of respect shown to the grandmother of our nation.

We’ll all be sat around playing tiddlywinks on Saturday afternoon if she sadly passes, so absolutely relevant to the football board. And if you don’t like it you should move country.

Looking on the web at the 'London Bridge is Down" plans for HRH's death, that would mean no sporting events for 10 days!

If the funeral was on a Tuesday when Town was at home, then obviously the game would have to be rearranged. Wouldn't think that it would affect games at the weekend.

Well said mate
God save the Queen

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

It’s catch 22 responding to trolling as it give the attention to the individual they sadly crave. I guess moments like this is pure porn for them !!  But I’ll bite.

How sh1t must your life be. To get a kick out of this.

You need professional help.

On a footballing prospective. Although a royalist, I believe the days should have gone when the nation stopped for a long period of time. A day of mourning on the day of the funeral should suffice.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

I'm with you on this. I am a royalist and remember the newspaper stories of the days in WW2 when our Queen helped the war effort. It is also recorded that she went out of Buckingham Palace to celebrate VE day with the ordinary people.

That said times have now changed and when she dies football should carry on like many other types of business. A few minutes of silence before the games should be held in her honour.

Broadly agree with that - although I'm not a royalists particularly, more of a better than the alternatives kind of agnostic - I think maybe the day when whe passes, and then a day for the actual funeral?

Doesn’t this sort of support what you’re arguing against? A very old lady appears to be gravely ill and the country is looking likely to come to a standstill not seen for 70 years. It’s disproportionate. It’s also unfair to post something cryptic about Ska personally and then say that he needs professional help and you should probably apologise for that.

You have a point. I have removed that comment. And although I stand by the rest of the post, that part was unnecessary  and only prompted by hearsay rather than actual knowledge. And for that I apologise.

Although, it does seem a bit strange that a grown man, on hearing the news as we all have , goes straight to gloat on a football message board !!

96 year old dear dies. Sad for the family. No need for anything to stop. It will but it really doesn’t need to.

Could be the advent of change. It won’t be.

By my own standards I should be screaming non footy.
But as this a massive subject I’ll bite my tongue.

I absolutely respect you views although they aren’t mine. At least your post isn’t a gloat.

I think that it may well be the advent of change.
Charles isn’t exactly popular and has a very big act to follow.
Harry has massively damaged the Monarchy and had he remained onside  things may be different.  So it will be interesting to see how it pans out !!

If there’s no footy this weekend then just wait for Klopp, Conte etc moaning about their fixture chaos, they are already unhappy with the games to be played due to the World Cup.

One might argue that Harry tried to give the firm a wake up call but the wagons circled and stopped him.

There really isn’t a reason to stop the games though.

Thing is, I’ve said absolutely nothing - purposefully so - but you’ve still managed to blow a gasket. The idea that I’m interested in the death of a 96 year old woman, let alone enjoying it, couldn’t be much more wrong. I’m only interested to the extent that it impacts me and it looks like we’re about to have matches cancelled and be forced into a week (or two?) of forced grieving when even you have admitted to not really being too fussed.

Unfortunately you’re not allowed to be “not bothered” by the issue, even if you have to carry on performatively so. Social media’s already a sewer and the lynch mob are out to make an example of anyone not showing suitable signs of grief. I’m just glad I’ll be on a Balearic sun lounger in a couple of days & missing the carry-on.

Still, my PMs are open if you want to apologise or let me know what I’ve missed.

Isn’t the funeral expected to be 9 days after her passing?

So Sat 17 Sep

Crewe and Colchester unlikely to go ahead and the midweek Gillingham match too?

EDIT: if the coronation of Charles falls on a weekend too, which I suspect it will, there could be further cancellations as there might not be enough emergency services available to supervise football matches.

Not a fan of the Royals, but I can appreciate she was the best of them and kept on doing various duties for much longer than she really needed to.

However, if this does indeed lead to cancellation of sporting events for a week or more, it's a massively disproportionate response.

She was the Head of State but I suspect that very few countries would react as strongly in similar circumstances.

Sad day for the family and people that truly care. Grand effort to live to 96.

Hopefully the Royal Family have the humility and self awareness to insist that normal life goes on. An extended period of mourning with cancellations of things like football would be ludicrous.

There is absolutely no way anything should be canceled this weekend, absolutely archaic if so.

What good is it going to do stopping the nation having any joy whatsoever and lobbing montages down their throat all week in a desperate attempt to keep the country as miserable as possible?

Fixtures are still on the BBC website. I side more towards being a Royalist but think games and other events should go ahead this weekend with tributes.

Man Utd host Real Sociedad at Old Trafford tonight and that is going ahead...

Fixtures are still on the BBC website. I side more towards being a Royalist but think games and other events should go ahead this weekend with tributes.

Man Utd host Real Sociedad at Old Trafford tonight and that is going ahead...

It will have been too late to cancel the match tonight. Police and other authorities probably requested it went ahead for public safety reasons.

The Queen passing makes me very sad and I respect everything around this in terms of respect & reverence.

I wouldn’t know if this is right or not but she respected people and I doubt she’d expect her passing to get in the way of what is important to people in their every day lives.

If the government get involved there will be no games, wrong shaped ball for that lot I’m afraid.

I'm not a Royalist but I respect those that are, and their views, and i agree it is a sad day, but, if games are still played this weekend, i wonder how many Royalists will stay away out of respect.

They’ll bottle it and I’d imagine all this weekends fixtures will be called off.

Midweek could be different, seems odd though given the queen was very much in to her sports.

Looks like sport will be cancelled but we get only one day off work or college.

I would have thought that thousands of football fans all over this country paying tribute to the queens service before kick off would be far more reverential than everyone sitting individually in their own homes.
The country rightfully mourns but life goes on and has to.

Not that I personally think it's the right thing but I just always assumed that when the Queen died then the protocol would be for the following weekends matches get postponed. Even when Princess Diana died I remember there were definitely some fixture cancellations.

The Queen was a big sports fan, keep the fixtures, get everyone to blast out God Save The Queen before kick off and let’s get on with it. This years schedule is hectic enough for clubs for us to be cancelling games.

P.S I love the Queen and am very patriotic.

It's not though. Most businesses will carry on as normal. Sport's a bit different because it's a leisure activity, but it's only a tiny part of the economy.

I didn’t read anything in ‘london bridge’ to say sporting events or any other cancellations or closures will happen immediately.
As far as i can gather, flags will be at half mast for the next ten days until the funeral. The cancellations will happen over that two day period. Business as usual till the funeral. respectfully of course.

I am disappointed that the Queen has passed away. She has been a reassuring presence for many over the past 70 years and will be a loss to the country.

However (and as this is randomly on the football forum, unlike posts about racism at football matches, which get moved in seconds), I do find it ironic that the majority of the people, both on here and elsewhere, that are rabidly upset about the loss of an unelected ‘leader’ of their country were probably the very same people who voted Brexit…under the illusion of taking back control.

Surely the monarchy is the antithesis of taking back control?

RIP.

Often thought you were a male private but let it go under the banner " this is a forum so its your opinion". Now I know....your a male private and thats just my opinion.

I love how you monarchy lovers have to turn abusive because some of us just dont want the country to grind to a halt.

Not one of us have been abusive about the Queen, if you want to mourn, mourn away. Some of us dont, quite frankly i dont care for the Queens passing. If that makes me a male private in your eyes, i really couldnt care.

I must say, I’ve been giving this some thought and trying to come at it from the perspective of what I think is the right thing to do rather than in terms of what I want to do this weekend.

I’ve often found minute’s silences (over a minute’s applause) to be profoundly poignant and thought provoking; in particular the one following the return of fans to football following Covid. I do genuinely feel that football going ahead, with the respective tributes that will take place, offers a platform for I and others to share our respects in a more powerful and meaningful way than if it does not.

I can see the other side of the argument too, but that is the conclusion I have arrived at.

It is extraordinary that some people are disrespectful on this of all days. If we cannot have some dignity on the death of our longest reigning monarch and the most famous woman in the world what have we become?

Obviously not everyone likes the monarchy but surely they can keep a dignified silence?

Not entirely sure of the demographic on here but there can’t be many who are old enough to remember a time when The Queen wasn’t our monarch. Since then an awful lot has changed and, as such, surely it’s a time for us to do what protocols tell us to do. If we have to miss a couple of games of football then so be it. I’d rather we didn’t but respect the fact we might.

I was going to the Oval tomorrow but the day's play is cancelled and ticket price refunded. Fair play to LNER who have also fully refunded advance train tickets. I will recycle the money into attending an extra Town game in addition to games already planned. I know that is what the Queen would have wanted...

Yet you keep responding, all whilst being patronising and coming across as a bit of an bottom.

You called me a male private, because i think the country should get on with things, not cancel sport, and stop this insane 12 days of mourning in which every person is almost forced to watch the news churn our tale after tale about the monarchy.

Well blow me down if i dont want to partake in that.

Goodnight my friend
