I think you need to watch the video again, I didn't see anything wrong with his left foot. In fact he scored 1 goal made 3 assists and had 2 shots well saved by the keeper, all with his left foot.

Having watched that, my honest opinion is he's got Tristan Abraham's vibes to me.

I feel like there’s no way Luton would’ve signed him without there being something there and I also doubt they’d have allowed him here without the McAtee deal.
He could be naff but I’ve a sneaky suspicion he’ll be better than the standard loanee

‘Rough Diamond ‘ as Buckley used to call them , he’s on loan and I doubt he’s costing us much . It looks like he’s quite fancied by Luton so let’s give him time and see what he can do. I suspect if he signs this week he’ll be playing by the weekend given our injuries so he’s gonna get his chance

Interesting that he’s been given the number 23 shirt. Either he’s a big Michael Jordan fan or there is another number 9 lined up?

Would be a massive amount of unnecessary pressure to give an untried 19 year old the number 9 shirt. Expect we will see a more experienced head come in during the next week or so. Winnall would fit the bill, as would someone like Tom Elliott.

I think Luton see this as an ideal situation for the two of them to help and work well together up top so by the time they are ready for their first team, they'll hit it off from the start.

Looking how short we are up front and how Taylor has to be managed it would surprise me if he gets a start.

I'm always positive about new players but by his show reals and highlights I'm struggling to get excited about this. I really hope I'm wrong. All one footed and all of his goals are simple on the reals I've watched... Really hope I eat my hat and he comes in firing on all cylinders. UTM

Well this is what we get when them at the top refuse to spend money on a tried and tested centre forward. I hope he turns out to be a great bit of business I just can’t see it unfortunately. I would like to see the speculate to accumulate approach and cash in on the additional season tickets and shirt sales, really push on. Sadly it doesn’t appear this will happen……

I'll keep saying this until I'm blue in the face, Hurst has the budget to buy, but so do other clubs bigger than us!.. You name me one proven goal scorer/striker we could afford?.. Orsi had a record equaling Tshmanga when chesterfield coughed up the cash, didn't exactly reap rewards for them did it?.. So to say "those at the top refuse to spend the money" is absolute codswallop!!

I would think PH is in the market for an experienced forward despite the signing of Pepple.
That No9 shirt is still free and has been for some time.

To be fair, until he broke his ankle they were top of the division. Had he played all season the table would have looked very different and we might well now be planning our visit to Glanford Park......

Doesn’t the fact that Luton have signed Pepple (raw as sashimi) and McAtee *** (4 football league goals to date) illustrate the shortage of available strikers? Surely this proves what Hurst and most other Football League managers are up against? *** yes, I know McAtee operates deeper than a number 9 but I’m allowed some creative licence

And that’s why we shouldn’t blow a load of cash on one player.

I look forward to seeing him play, as i do any new signing for Town. At 19, Pepple has, hopefully, a long career in front of him. We won't see the fully developed player this season but, hopefully, Town's coaching staff will assist his development. Doubtless, his game time in D2 will be carefully managed. That must be the objective here and other clubs will watch with interest. The hope must be that, in the future, other Championship or Premier League clubs, impressed with what Town's coaching staff achieve, will be happy to entrust us with their 'starlets-in-the-making'. That is how we will progress.

Obviously it’s part of the Mcatee deal. While our new owners PR delivery is ten thousand times better then hen Fentys it’s the facts that matter. Mcatee out for half the season at least and now under Luton’s control and we have a new player to bring on who is as raw as they come in the most difficult position to play on the pitch. Is it still the brilliant deal it was a week ago?

How the f@ck is a couple of months "half the season, at least"?..if Macatee doesn't play another second in a town shirt it's still an amazing deal!..he was leaving at the end of the season anyway, so whatever luton paid it's effectively "free" cash for us!..

It’s called having an opinion. It’s what happens on forums. You don’t agree? Fine. Nor do I, but there’s no need for insulting people who’s opinion is different to yours.

I don't usually comment on the signing of new players or managers. Plenty on here ended up looking pretty foolish when Holloway arrived.
Let's give the guy a break and see what he can do.

Looking forward to seeing what this guy can do, he’s young, keen, and desperate to impress.
However, judging from Hurst’s interview, I think this deal has been done outside of his comfort zone (ie Pepple was likely not a player even remotely on his radar, he’s never seen him play) and is probably a token gesture as part of the McAtee deal. Which is the total opposite of Hurst’s usual meticulous scouting and cautious transfer policy.
I do think he will take a few weeks to settle into our high tempo training and style of play.
So I hope the fans give him the chance to adjust, and he could very well set this league alight and bang 25 goals this season.

As PH says in his interview.... it's a bit of a gamble.
But it's a gamble that won't affect us too much if he's not as good as Luton hope he is.

It's an interesting one. From the videos, he looks like very athletic with pace and strength, something we lack in attack. If he's got some good footballing ability alongside, could be a great signing. He comes across really well though and is clearly enthusiastic, so I'm sure he'll learn a lot while here too.

If the club are paying a proportion of McAtee's wages or a loan fee is part of the deal then it's not as good a deal now because we are paying for an injured player.

I would imagine we will be paying him the same wage as we would have been for this year of his contract, with Luton paying any difference.

You'd think Pepple will be able to learn a lot from Taylor so a good opportunity for him to develop here. I tend to think we'll not see a huge amount of him until he settles in and gets used to the pace of the game, unless he really is a proper prospect for the future.
Would be nice to have a young loannee of the ability of Patterson at the club again.

If he learns to deal with much better defenders than in the videos then he could be a surprise package. Fitness should be OK but decision making will take a few matches. He seems to enjoy the press so that may help replace that side of McAtee's game. Making the ball stick in the final third is where we are short sometimes.
Watching Barrow, Orient, Sutton et al, League 2 is all about making possession near the box count. Getting shots away and following up are key. Just like our equaliser on Saturday.

When we were in the Championship in the 80s it was rumoured that we tried to buy another 19 year old from Leicester. Gary Lineker turned out to be at least half decent.

I'm always positive about new players but by his show reals and highlights I'm struggling to get excited about this. I really hope I'm wrong. All one footed and all of his goals are simple on the reals I've watched... Really hope I eat my hat and he comes in firing on all cylinders. UTM
I did say that but nobody believed me. His left foot looks very weak. Not a problem, I was switched from right back to left back back in the day and I managed to work on it as a Sunday league player. So, I'm sure he can do it!

A week ago we had our star player injured and waiting for a specialist assessment that will see him ruled out for 'months'. He's out of contract in the summer and isn't signing a new deal. One way or another, he'll be gone within 12 months. This week the situation hasn't changed regards our star striker, other than that he's had said assessment. Those months might be the full season, we don't know at this time. But we've managed to get another body in the building (Pepple), albeit an unknown quantity. Plus a nice shed of cash from Luton. You're right, it's not the brilliant deal it was a week ago. It's an even better one!

I replied to your earlier post suggesting you should watch the video again. He is a NATURAL left footed player, and on that short reel, he scored 1 goal, made 3 assists, and forced the keeper to make two good saves, ALL with his left foot!

I don't think it's a shed load of money reading between the lines. I think a major part of the deal was the loan back (in return for a smaller fee) but that has backfired a bit. Stockwood said they could probably get more money but were happier with the overall package from Luton including their players being loaned to us. McAtee was really keen on Luton as well.

Apparently, his movement was not CRISP enough for us. I'll shut up, but not for long.

Depends if you fill the shed with £50 notes or two-pence pieces. Either way, I think the club were always going to work with the player on the preferred outcome. That's part of the vision for the culture and our future recruitment. Reading between the lines myself, it was only ever going to be Luton where he was going. For all we know, McAtee's injury may have scuppered Luton (or any other club for that matter) wanting to pay a considerable fee for him at this stage. Us taking him back on loan with a reduced transfer fee could have been a balancing measure to the fact he's going to need considerable rehab. Others have mentioned it to death too, but if he had taken the operation in the summer and spent until October on the sidelines then it would have limited our ability to sell him in August when his stock is high. If he came back in October, bagged a load of goals ahead of the window opening in January then our options are incredibly limited. Sell him cheap or lose him for nothing in six months. I still think we've done amazingly well out of this. McAtee's shoulder issues are not a result of us selling him. They're a constraint we were working with and have negotiated very well to get a great outcome for the club, in my opinion anyway.

That's irrelevant. I agree that selling him was the right thing to do. People are creaming themselves over how good a deal we got without knowing the details. HerveJosse who said it might not be such a good deal now is probably accurate in his assessment for a change.

Well now we have seen him in the flesh.
Not a bad touch and held the ball and was aware of and found team mates with his distribution 9 times out of 10.
Didn't strike me as that rapid or that strong.
Ran across the line pretty well on the shoulder looking for long balls to run onto but we played through the midfield that much tonight he wasn't fed alot of those balls.
Worked tirelessly , faded second half.
Not an immediate eye-catching performance but not a bad debut overall.

Thought he didn’t really look match fit and his positional sense was a bit off. Good run out for him and as it happened these limitations didn’t matter thanks to a storming set of performances from our midfield and wide players. Won’t be ready for League 2 for a while.

Wasn't overly impressed, nor did I expect to be. His positioning was woeful at times, which is understandable.
Kept going though, so hope to see better from him when he gets up to speed.

His last match in Canada was on the 1st of July so yeah he definitely wouldn't have been fully match fit.

Sounds like he had a decent debut .
He is only 19 so a lot to learn so I expect he will improve over the coming months.

He didn't really use his body effectively most of the time. The defender was always getting a nudge on him to put him off his stride when they were challenging. He needs to be the one getting the nudge in first, so to speak. That's where the coaching will come in.
I suppose the pace of the game might well be higher than he's used to as well so that will be another area where he needs to adapt.

That's irrelevant. I agree that selling him was the right thing to do. People are creaming themselves over how good a deal we got without knowing the details. HerveJosse who said it might not be such a good deal now is probably accurate in his assessment for a change.
eh? You just moaned about us paying an injured players wages, so surely getting any money at all for said injured player, is better than not? I think your lost my friend. For what it's worth, I was told by somebody from the Trust it was about 300k or thereabouts, which (if true) still more than represents a great deal for a player who was going regardless.

I thought first half he looked decent. Looked to get the ball with his back to goal and bring the midfielders into play. He gave the back line something to think about
Like previously said, he faded second half and was way too deep at times. But there is clearly potential there that will need bedding in.

I agree with this view. Think there's some harsh or overly critical posts on his performance last night elsewhere on this thread.

He wasn't great to be honest. He seemed to stay too central at times, instead of dragging players out wide. That being said, he didn't stop trying, and he's 19 with his first game in England against big defenders.
Kiernan made a big difference when we come on up front, and did very well

Probably the same people demanding the club spunk loads of cash on that elusive striker…ya know, the one everyone wants… He did fade but to be fair I thought town played a really high tempo and with intensity last night which probably didn’t help. Personally, I’d start him on Saturday as something unknown for oppo to think about…

He definitely won’t start if Taylor is fit. A raw talent who will hopefully improve once bedded in. I still really hope that elusive striker arrives before the end of the month…..

He barely knows his teammates and they barely know him. That said, I thought he was good with the ball on the floor and nearly always released it to a teammate quickly which was part of the reason we tore Crewe apart. I thought it was a promising debut without even considering that it's his first game in English football.

19. Hasn't played for 6 weeks. One days training with us. Never played a game in England before. Only arrived in the country last week. Signed for parent club then quickly shipped out here. Asked to play up front on his own in a high press system.
Thought he did pretty well in consideration to be honest.

Agreed - and I don’t think I or others were being overly critical, just highlighting the patent shortcomings, which are for good reasons as above. But the conclusion is the same - he doesn’t look ready to lead the line for us.

The crowd were willing him to do something good when the ball went anywhere near him, but he wasn't quite up to speed which is understandable. Based solely on last night, the fact that he is so young and will take time to settle in, I am sure Hurst will keep him in reserve and he will be trying hard to get that elusive and experienced number 9. We were fantastic last night, and Pepple himself would have been impressed, and I imagine slightly taken aback at the quality on show.

I liked that when he did get involved he tried to keep everything simple. For a young lad trying to progress and make a name in the game, it's happened before when players try to take extra risk or be overly flamboyant to impress.
Hopefully as he builds fitness and understanding with his team-mates we'll see him try to showcase more of what he's about but at 19 years old that was a good start for him IMO and definitely something to build on for the rest of the season.

He wasn't slow to tell their big centre back, pointing at him and letting him know. Not frightened or intimidated

Match fitness will always be an issue for any player who hasn't had a game for 6 weeks but I reckon we'll see big improvements in both that, his positioning etc over the next few weeks with the coaches we have. I don't hear anyone saying he did much wrong, just griping that he's essentially not McAtee and we've all been spoiled a bit there.
I'd also like to say that when the midfield gets time and space to run riot somebody is occupying the defenders to give them that time and space*....that was always my excuse when I didn't score playing up front anyway!
*Alternatively Crewe's defence might just have been pants.

Think he needs the ball to run on to. Not a leader of the line, more a partner for Taylor

I thought he played well last night especially the first half. Of course we wont get a true indication of his abilities until he has had more game time and is fitter.

Hurst said in the interview on Mariners TV that he hasn't even had a chance to see him training on a full sized pitch yet. And he obviously didn't know any of his team mates as he seemed unsure about joining in the goal celebrations with a bunch of virtual strangers. He's also 19 and far away from friends and family. In a few weeks, when he gets up to speed and feels fully part of the group, this kid might be a revelation.
