So Orsi is one who's injured. McAtee up front and Holohan behind him?

No striker? Is McAtee up front? Is Kiernan? If Kiernan is up front then who’s on the wing?

Looks like Orsi is one of those previously unknown injuries and Kiernan may be down the middle.

Shows up our lack of strikers, but I see Taylor is on the bench. Maybe not fit enough for 90 mins.

I did wonder if McAtee would play as a 9. If we set up as we did last season, you would assume Kiernan and Clifton are wide. Who plays that McAtee role of then though is anyones guess.

Stay in the game 60 minutes, introduce Taylor and resort to something more familiar perhaps.

We all miss this speculation and debate, perhaps Kiernan will be up top with McAtee with a compressed midfield and width coming from the full backs.

I’m thinking McAtee drifts wide when we don’t have possession but otherwise the right flank will be left for the Efete train - no strike in E10 today.

Keep it tight for 70-80 mins, bring on JMD and see what that produces.

Why didn't we just get the operation done straight after the final? I know he's back on but there is clearly an issue. Hurst needs probing on that decision I think.

I’m assuming you did give it time but mine took ages almost like it didn’t work, then it seemed to refresh like it had worked but there was no confirmation screen. I checked my emails and there was one saying it had gone through so it could be worth checking.

If McAtee has further injured his shoulder, but is playing through the pain, then we may have a problem long term.

Who remembers what happened last season when he was out injured? We dont need another abscence like that again!

Barrow, Crewe, Salford and Walsall in the top 4 at the moment.

Watching this are we over complicating things??

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

At least we sound like we belong in League Two, doesn't sound like we are overly stretched.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

0 - 0 HT for our first game back in the EFL. We don't seem too bad so hopefully, we can get a goal or 2 in the second half.

Pretty even first half with both sides having chances. We probably should have a goal from at least one of those chances.

They started well first 20 and we looked disjointed but since then I think we've been quite a bit better than them. Efete and Kiernan down the right is a really exciting combo. We just need another more attacking player in for Morris or green who are essentially doing the same job. But a good performance so far against a decent orient team.

You can tell we have injuries and several walking wounded at the same time.

Not pretty at all and not fluent but we are battling

We'll be much more effective when we have players back

We started nervy at first, but I think we shade 55-45 just because our efforts on goal were better.
Grimsby A&E are busy though.

What system are we playing? Don't think anyone's mentioned it other than the prematch guesswork.

I'd guessed it was going to be 433 with Clifton and Kiernan either side of McAtee, is that how it's looking?

Weird game, we’ve given the ball away a lot but their keeper has had more saves to make
Think we look light in midfield without the ball, Green looked very nervous but is settling down, efete looks good despite the miss

Why not get a VPN and watch it? Costs about £20 a year and you can use it to watch regionalised content on streaming services too. Atlas VPN couldn't be simpler to use, I suspect they're all simple nowadays.

Yeah it's exactly that with Holohan on the right and Morris on the left of the midfield trio

Bit shaken to start with but started to get a foothold.
Orient leave space for us and we are using it well at times but to many loose passes. Holohan giving it away a bit and macca being greedy at times.
Need a proper winger on the left tho, not sure what hurst has against left sided wingers. Didn’t he do the same with monkhouse?

You can’t tell where the ball hit him from that angle but if it did hit Waterfall’s left arm it’s a definite pen. Arm is hanging out like a rain soaked pensioner at a bus stop.

We’ve come into the game and the pen was a sucker punch. Not sure we’re quite the finished article yet but one game in, long way to go!

I think some of you watch a different sport. If that has hit his arm (which it looked like it did in that admittedly grainy video), by the letter of the law as it is now, it's a penalty. As he turns his back his arm swings out horizontal to his body. You may not like the law but that's what it is.

So basically all you need to do is kick the ball against the person trying to tackle you and as long as it hits their arm that's a free kick or penalty according to you. No he didn't intestinally move his arm he was diving in to block it. Go cry about how wearing a face mask makes you like Jews in Nazi Germany and leave the football to people with a brain.

Grimsby lacked the quality that Leyton Orient has and we’re much slower in every single area, almost looking like we’re not fully fit. Big first game and lots of lessons to learn for the lads. The ref has been rubbish but you play the game I suppose.

Pretty poor by Town today I'm afraid. Some very poor passing and nothing up front and beaten by a very competent Leyton Orient team.

We've played well in periods despite having a depleted team, positive to take away from the game. They've only managed to beat us because of a penalty and a wonder goal.

Absolutely miles off the pace here today. Better hope it's a result of the short pre-season cos I'm deeply unconvinced by this lethargic second half showing.

Their goalie lost control of the ball and McAtee made what looked like a fair challenge.

Non high boot, no contact with their goalie, so why blow for a foul?

Poor reffing.

However, over all, our passing game has been poor and the better team has won today !

Some thinking to do for Hurst and the team !

Didn't create enough but it's only the first game of the season against a team tipped to be in and around the play offs. Feel like if the penalty wasn't given it had 0-0 written all over it from what I could understand listening.
Oh well. Pick ourselves up. Stay behind PH and the boys and we go again. UTM

Disappointing result but it's our first game back in this league. That said the ref was very poor ( thought we left that standard in the NL). Their worldie goal cannot be saved but the peno was a poor decision. That said we had our opportunities and failed to take them.

A bad second half by town.  Never really got hold of the ball.  First half were better. Orient close down very quickly and fast passing.  Could have been different if Efete had scored and the pen wasn't given.  Lots of decisions going against us.

Not enough strikers in the building whatever the quality. Key player having to play out of position in first game as a consequence not good. Surprised we didn’t keep Mani given lack of incoming in that department

I see it as a game of chances taken and not taken. I didn't see the penalty and the James shot was a a once-a-season job but (cliche alert) goals change games. Two EFL2 competitive teams I'd say.

Per Twitter, this was a drop kick from their keeper and McAtee played the ball after the keeper had thrown it in the air?

If so, it’s a foul and a yellow card, regardless of whether McAtee has touched him.

I’m as much a Town fan as anyone on here but you can’t blame the ref if he’s following the rules.

Think it sort of highlights the issues we "knew", lack of creativity in midfield and no strikers..  Having said that I thought we could well go on a get something prior to the penalty.  Goals change games.  Nothing to fear.. except maybe the odd poor referee decision..

Kris - it appears that immariner has a better understanding of the current handball rules than you. I agree with him.

The rule:

For the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.
Handling the ball

It is an offence if a player:

By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

It is nigh impossible to go for the ball like that & keep your arms by your side/behind your back. There was no deliberate intent to handle the ball - in my day it was called ball to hand..

Second half was shite but they never really created much, just the handball and a worldie the difference. But it highlights the fact our midfield or strike force is currently lacking and I'd go as far as to say no better than we ended the national League with. We actually played well for the second part of the first half but lacked any creative players.

Why not get a VPN and watch it? Costs about £20 a year and you can use it to watch regionalised content on streaming services too. Atlas VPN couldn't be simpler to use, I suspect they're all simple nowadays.

Actually you get Free VPN if you use Opera Browser. It's unlimited.
I used 6GB watching in PrivadoVPN, so next match Opera + VPN on.

Agreed that the second half was really poor and Orient look much fitter and physical so there's much to think about for PH. We still look like a non-league side, albeit a very good one.

Thought Smith came in and played very well.

Efete looked fairly decent in spells, other than that it was fair lacklustre.

McAtee just looked angry all game.

Never mind, another 45 games, I don’t think we will know where we’re at until about 15 games in.

McAtee just looked angry all game.

He was wobbling his arm to get it into the socket in his shoulder? It seemed to settle down, but clearly impacted his game and made him visibly fuming.

I used opera years ago for Netflix when working away. It was rubbish. Maybe it's better now...

Atlas worked well today except it cut out near half time and I had to clear cookies to get it going after realising I wasn't in France. At least it wasn't tracked on the server side or that'd be really annoying

What puzzles me (it doesn't take much) is that I think we have 27 registered players excluding Scannell.
PH Intimated earlier this week that we could come up with 11 fit players + the 7 permitted on the bench for todays game & that was pretty much it.
That would suggest that we have 9  players out injured - one third of the squad - before a ball had been kicked in anger.
It just seems that we have a disproportional number of injuries?

Per Twitter, this was a drop kick from their keeper and McAtee played the ball after the keeper had thrown it in the air?

If so, it’s a foul and a yellow card, regardless of whether McAtee has touched him.

I’m as much a Town fan as anyone on here but you can’t blame the ref if he’s following the rules.

Just a shame he didn’t follow the rules that involve stopping free kicks being taken or time wasting, as I’ve heard they’re supposed to be cutting down on that this season

Baldrick ! The only impression you can do is that of a man with no talent !!

Disappointing but not unexpected given the jump in level, short turnaround and a few injuries. The need for a striker is obvious.

Don't think we have found our feet yet but we will in time.

While I agree we definitely need some additional attacking options the big disappointment for me today was the midfield trio of Morris, Green and Holohan. With the two new signings I was expecting to see them flying around the pitch snapping at heels and nicking the ball from opponents Ben Fox style but there was very little of that. Our pressing game, a strength in the playoffs last season, was totally missing and we had too many players looking leggy and leaving too much space in the centre of the park after they went 2-0 up which meant it was easy for them to see the result out. Felt like we didn't really have any leaders on the pitch trying to drag us back into it after their quickfire double which was sad, most of the players were just moaning at each other when passes went astray, or weren't played where they wanted.

Luke Waterfall also referred to this in his interview on RH. The never say die attitude was missing today.

As Gary Croft pointed out, a change to our normal formation was forced upon us due to injuries.

We had scant time to work on our normal 4 2 3 1 during a short pre season, never mind the 4 3 3 we played today.

We lacked a focal point too and it all made for a disjointed performance.

Orient looked a decent side to be fair, just one of those days.

Sure Town will do alright with time.

Thought we edged the first half and towards the end of it McAtee looked like he was getting a taste for the game with some trademark flicks and tricks.
Then we came out for the second half looking right up for it but it was only for a few minutes before the pen took the wind out of our sails.
Then the second killed it as we just couldn’t find a way back into the game.
A bit disappointing after the playoffs but overall I thought we looked decent and competitive, just missing a bit of spark except for just before and just after half time. I reckon it’s there though. Looking forward to next week and I see a few of the players have tweeted about putting things right.

Not enough strikers in the building whatever the quality. Key player having to play out of position in first game as a consequence not good. Surprised we didn’t keep Mani given lack of incoming in that department

I read somewhere that Mani wanted to be a regular starter in the team, and PH didn't want to promise him that.

It wasn’t a bad trip in the end - it’s amazing how much merlot a coffee flask holds 🤪

Ok, a loss - but an awakening to the reality of being a league higher.

Don't blame those who stood in for injuries - that could happen any time during the season and would need planning for.

What it DID show is that a lot of our promotion side have given their all with little rest, and the newbies still need to gel with the others.

Their players seemed to pick off our longer passes quite quickly and were winning most of the 2nd balls.

I'm sure that this will rectify itself under Hurst's tuition, and is actually a good wake up call.

The 12th man fan base will help next week, but it will be against another pre season promotion rated team.

No easy games this year, so it will be a grafting start to the season while players recover, gain full fitness and get in proper game time.
