It happened right in front of me and I’ve never winced at a challenge like I did that one.

Everyone expected a red to come out and Clattenburg bottled it. The only explanation I can think of is he was so shocked at the tackle it caught him off guard.

I remember Palmer being disgusted and took the girl private off.

I’d agree, from the glimpses we saw of Pringle, he was a class act and is a case of ‘what might have been’.

We’ve had some decent games against Stockport, anyone remember get soaked at their gaffe in the Johnstone’s paint?

Yeah, from what I saw of him at Forest on the previous Saturday and in that game against Stockport he was absolutely a cut above any forward we’d had for some time. Not necessarily an out and out goalscorer, but very, very clever and technically impressive.

I feel he had the potential to go down in Town folklore. I suppose, in a way, he did anyway, but for all the wrong reasons. Still, I can’t think of any other players who played less than two full games for Town as fondly remembered than Pringle.

Derek Pringle was total class and fitted us like a glove.  I was also at that game and remember the hit from Challinor from behind that finished Derek; forever etched in the memory... 😔

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

It was Martin Pringle. I actually took him to hospital as I was on duty that night for the ambulance service.  He wasn't bitter at all about his open fracture, he just said "ah well that's part of football". I thought he was an absolute gent.

I seem to recall Clattenberg sent Pouton off in a game at BP once, can’t remember which one but might be wrong.

He did indeed send Pouton off. It was towards the end of the season, after the Pringle tackle, when we needed every point to avoid relegation. Pouts was on a booking when he slid in to tackle in front of the dugouts. It looked like he got the ball but Clattenberg decided it was violent conduct and gave him a straight red.. Because he had been sent off before he was given a five (I think) game ban and missed the rest of the season. We were relegated!

Highlights of the incident were shown on Yorkshire TV with Neil Warnock on the panel. I can remember he was scathing of Clattenberg, saying, that it wasn't a foul, or booking, and definitely not a red.

Hated Clattenberg after that.

You are correct, it was Tranmere - John Achterberg was the keeper in question.

We did actually beat Stockport 3-1 the following season during that Andy Todd inspired run of form at the back end of the season. Todd himself scoring a cracking volley from a corn

That was also the Martin Pringle game, sadly.

Didn't that Todd goal actually burst the ball? Or am I thinking of another game? Mainly just remember the noise from that tackle, as others have stated Palmer's reaction was classy, I seem to think he put Chalinor on the transfer list too.
