Wow. That's really sad if confirmed. Way too young and a great player to watch during his brief time here.

Yeah, not too sure how reliable the source is but if true then very sad and far, far too young.

Really sad news.

Scored a few for us from centre back, didn't he? Remember that one against Burnley (think it was his first), then there was one at Bolton, and another in injury time v Wimbledon. Have I missed any?

One of the more expensive players we had, but it brought a lot of media attention. Think Lennie wanted him here in time to play against Palace, who also had a Chinese international in their team.

Wasn't his kid born in England while he was over here? Might have misremembered that bit.

They used to show that goal on Yorkshire TV on the starting credits of Goals On Sunday.

I remember being at the Reebok when he scored that header.

Very sad.

Heart attack apparently.

Terrible news. I don't think anyone here fully understood how big of a name he was back in China. There are absolutely tons of articles in mandarin about him passing away, all of which are filled with hundreds of comments, eg:

Sad loss, one of our most remarkable signings and I think his son was born in Grimsby? Ironic as he was rumoured to be eunuch as I recall.

Amazing to think that pre-Fenty, Town were always innovative trailblazers.

Zhang’s arrival was Town’s second attempt to crack china of course.

The first being when Laws lobbed Bill Carr’s fine bone(tti) dinner set at Ivano’s cheek after the Luton reverse in 1996.

Very sad news. 48 is too young to die. I loved his time with us. Was a good defender and scored some vital goals. Hope GTFC will remember him in some way.

Had doubts earlier but looks like it's true. 48 is no age, so sad.

Brought in at the height of ITV Digital on astronomical money but you can't blame him for that. At least he gave a damn and integrated into the area for his short stay.

Think he scored one on a Tuesday night against Birmingham at BP too.  Wasn't the biggest of blokes but he used to rise like a salmon for a header.

That game away at Bolton where he scored, he and Groves (who were both at centre back I think) were winning everything at both ends that night.  We had a flurry of corners in front of the Town fans and they couldn't handle them.  Not very often you see a Sam Allardyce team undone at set-pieces.

RIP Zhang.

Was a good player for us in his brief spell.

A real favourite of mine despite only being here 3 months. Adapted very quickly to English football, good solid defender and dangerous from set pieces. Always a player that has stayed in my memory since. Wasn’t the rumour that we we’re paying £13,000 a week for him in wages and expenses though? I’m sure I recall something like that. Crazy money if it was.

Far to young to pass away, rest in peace Zhang. UTM!

£13,000 is the figure I remember. Cheap at the price, though, as his goals and all round performances played a huge part in keeping us up. Relegation would have been much more expensive. Technically, one of the best players to wear a Town shirt in all my years of following the club. RIP Zhang.

This is very sad news. So yesterday this ex-professional athlete celebrated his 48th birthday in apparently excellent health and today he drops dead ? I suppose these things do happen, but it seems like there may be a bit more to this story.

I don't recall him being that brilliant defensively but that was perhaps due to communication issues with his teammates. I don't think he spoke a lot of English, did he? I remember him as a real threat aerially - a defender known more for his goals, than stopping them. Didn't realise he'd won quite so many caps for China and had won so many titles over there.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

RIP.

Not much to add here, up there with Andy Todd in terms of quality of loanees though. Was superb for us. 48 is no age to go. Does anyone know what happened?

RIP Zhang

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

I'm not sure why, but my abiding memories of Zhang - absolutely cast in my mind's eye, are of him in that all red Dixons kit. There are three away games in particular that really stand out in my mind.

The first was the 2-1 away win Preston, just before Christmas 2000. Town went behind after about 19 seconds after falling asleep at an early free kick. Menno Willems equalised with a low free kick their Finnish keeper (Moilanen?) should have rightly kept out, before Grovesey headed us in front from a corner in the second half. Town fans were put in an old, half-derelict stand down one side of the pitch - I think Deepdale was only half-developed back then and there was still a terrace behind one of the goals. Town fans singing "Oh what fun it is to see the Grimsby win away", to the tune of Jingle Bells.

Then there was that random Wednesday nighter against Bolton at the Reebok. £5 to get in, a fairground outside the stadium, a massive pyrotechnics display on the absolutely knackered pitch as the players emerged from the tunnel(s) - no something you saw a lot of at the time. Livvo put Town in front in the first half I think, with Zhang leaping like a salmon to put us back into the lead in the second after Bolton had equalised. Ended 2-2 and Town were unlucky not to win - made all the more frustrating by the two massive flags held aloft by a couple of kids on one side of the pitch whenever Bolton scored.

The last one was a few weeks later, Paddy's day away at QPR. I was only a kid, relatively speaking, so I went on Bernard's bus which crashed into a taxi on the way to the ground. That game was probably most memorable for the best goalkeeping performance I've ever seen from Danny Coyne as he kept Peter Crouch at bay time and time again, followed by a smash and grab, late winner for Town from a scrappy corner. I know that result particularly rankled one Ian Holloway, having previously read his autobiography, which is nice.

Thanks for the memories Zhang! Forever a GTFC cult hero.

And wow, it doesn't half make you feel old when your childhood footballing heroes die. A sad, sad week for the club.

It’s even sadder when a football ‘hero’ who’s a decade younger than you dies Poojah. That really brings home a sense of your own mortality.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Loved watching him while he was with Town
What a shock.
RIP

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Genuinely gutted about this. Such a happy guy. As time goes by there are just so many things to become saddened by. RIP Zhang.
