what did people make of hist post match interview when he talked about not filling the bench?
i took it as meaning the end of the road for the likes of Rose & Williams, (although having said that, what was Scannell doing there?).
You do have to wonder what is to become of Idehen & Starbuck as well

Hurst couldn't praise Green enough could he for his attitude in the camp even when not getting picked.

He gets a lot of stick on here so well done to you Matt Green.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

To be fair Ive never given him a hard time because of his attitude, he gets stick from me because he's the worst player I've ever seen play for us - 30yrs. In the worst team.
I'm sure if I was picking up that sort of money for doing fack all, my attitude would be pretty good
Attitude? The man doesnt even look fit

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Bloody hell, I would like to see some of the trash you think is better over the last 30 years!

I agree, of the players who have been regulars for 2 years (which astonishgly green has) I can't think of another one as bad as green. He is even worse than berrett which really does take some doing.

Conlon and Sweeney weren’t bad players (Sweeney in particular was quite talented), they were just terrible professionals. That said, if we’re even just talking strikers, there’s no shortage of players who would be higher up the chart of talentless wasters than Matt Green.

Shaun Tuton, Damian Spencer, Serge Makofo, Tom Corner, Tomi Ameobi, Chris Llewelyn, Chris Jones, Ben Wright, Rob Duffy to name just a handful.

I remember Fyfield scoring against us for York City.

I also remember his free kick for us at Barnet away on a Tuesday night and it didn't even reach the wall😂

It was a good goal as well, running about two thirds of the pitch (albeit largely unchallenged) to slot home from the edge of the box. I think we’d come from 2 down to make it 2-2, only for that to happen.

Hurst 2nd time around seems to be a lot better with his interviews.

He usually has a smile on his face and it seems he is pleased to answer the questions.

Unlike last time when it looked he did not want to do it but it was part of the job .

A more relaxed and happy person it must be the new owners.

I want to put in a word for George Williams here. I just don't get why people give him stick. I hope he's just injured and I would love to see him here next year. I honestly think he could be a very important player for us in the National League. He is one of the few players at Town who have genuine quality going forward. It's only a few weeks since he came on at half time at Mansfield and turned the game around, almost winning it right at the end.

A striker gets applauded for scoring. Each game he went without scoring obviously dented his confidence. You could see yesterday his surprise that it went in.  He looked relieved as if some massive weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Let's hope it has.

I got the impression (injured players aside) that his answer meant that he had now found out those who he thought could offer something either currently  or in the future, so no point loading the bench with people he wouldn’t use in any circumstance

Under 2 different managers, he’s started 9 games all season, for a team at the bottom of League 2 with only one team scoring fewer all year. For an attacking midfielder, that probably says something about him more than anyone else.

Can’t imagine Hurst will want him next year, which is a shame as I hoped he’d be able to do a bit of a Jon Nolan-job with him, in turning around a decent player on the slide, but it’s whether the budget and circumstance allows us the luxury.

Hurst said last week he was ill not injured but had reported for training this week.

How can anyone red x this, Linwood, Brodie, Makofo also spring to mind. Although Green was born offside and does foul more often breaking down moves, he's not as bad.

Tommy Forecast is by far the worst player I have ever seen in a Town shirt.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

He's superfit and meant to be a top professional. The only issue is he is 34 years old, it comes to us all. Look at recruitment and retainment. We let our outstanding players who are proven such as Charles Vernam, Jake Hessenthaler, Padraig Amond etc's contracts expire and we lose them. Yet we sign players like Green, the goals had dried up, he was 32 sitting on a National League teams bench and we go in with a two year contract. Madness, but Matt Green's fault it definitely is not.

One of the acquisitions based upon one good performance against us - for Exeter. Jimmy Gilligan was another. Had a great game for Watford in the Cup against us. Was utterly shite for us - worse than Murray Jones. To be fair we were Division 2 but I think I'd say Murray Jones was Buckley's worst signing rather than our worst ever striker.

As for Matt Green, I'd say there have been a good few worse. I agree he's been terrible value for the decent whack that he is on. Perhaps with the right partner upfront on a regular basis he may have been able to do a better job for us. I actually think he's a pretty good finisher, but certainly not the right player as a lone frontman.

Not a chance...Tony Caldwell....one of Buckleys early signings, played him once maybe twice...realised what a big mistake he had made and was never seen again.
Looked like he had just strolled into Blundell Park by mistake on his way to Sidney Park or Sussex Rec.

I think you'll find even Buckley thought Tony Caldwell was his worst signing, but a good bit of business as he swapped him for Scott Magarvey, then sold him to Stockport.

We played Palace at home, they  had Mikkel Forsel and we had Nicholl, both on loan from Chelsea. One of them was a footballer, the other was a fraud. Guess which one we got. What a dog!!

Someone posted earlier today that george has left the building. Cant vouch for the reliability of the poster, but it is very believable

18 goals in 59 appearances. Not too shabby. May have been a helmet, no idea, but I don't recall any incident that made me think so.

It was Brodie I was thinking of, not Elding. My bad.

Can't remember the name of the team (some London pub side with a sloped pitch that wouldn't be out of place on a ski resort). Remember going last time we were in the conf and we got a peno, Brodie almost did a "Payne" fighting over the ball to take it, in fact the entire game he was acting like a girl private.

Oh god, its just hit me, we are going to be visiting grounds that resemble bus stops again next season

Williams has more desire to get forward with the ball than any of our current crop.

He’s hardly been given a chance to continue where he left off against Mansfield which is ridiculously harsh IMO

Quoted from ska face

Under 2 different managers, he’s started 9 games all season, for a team at the bottom of League 2 with only one team scoring fewer all year. For an attacking midfielder, that probably says something about him more than anyone else.

Can’t imagine Hurst will want him next year, which is a shame as I hoped he’d be able to do a bit of a Jon Nolan-job with him, in turning around a decent player on the slide, but it’s whether the budget and circumstance allows us the luxury.

At the risk of splitting hairs, Williams was class against Orient as well as Mansfield (which is the half I assume you're talking about).

There's obviously a player with enough quality in there to be a very good L2 player. He was at one point one of FGR's best players and was in the senior Wales squad.

Of the players contracted beyond this season we've got Macca, Waterfall, Morais, Rose, Williams, Wright, Gibson, Jackson Jr, LJL and Scannell. We can't pay them all off, surely? For me Scannell and Gibson have to go, absolute no brainers. Macca will be staying. Williams, as Ska said, is one you'd hope Hurst could turn around Nolan style. He's got the most talent out of that lot by a country mile. And out of the whole squad too. The difference with Nolan was that he got stuck in. As mentioned above Williams is weak in the tackle, I'd even go beyond that and say he's a girl private on the pitch. Whether that's a result of a major injury or what, I'm not sure. That could well be a factor in whether or not Hurst keeps him. But it's apparent that if Hurst can get a tune out of him we'll have one of the better attacking midfielders in the Conference (assuming we're down there).

Williams is basically the new Chris Llewellyn, he was an attacking midfielder had a championship career and bunch of Welsh caps too,  only 28 when he signed for us but absolute gash for town.

It doesn't matter what career a player had had before town only thing that matters is what happens on the pitch in a town shirt. Whatever is up with Williams he's not worth risking keeping on as the fact he can't breakthrough into this side tells me all I need to know.

I think you'll find even Buckley thought Tony Caldwell was his worst signing, but a good bit of business as he swapped him for Scott Magarvey, then sold him to Stockport.

I would say that makes Caldwell a great signing - just as a way of getting rid of Scott McGarvey...

I appreciate Hessenthaler wasn’t that effective going forward but if Williams was the replacement we were well short changed.

There’s clearly a player in there but we’ve seen it for about 45 minutes all season.

Can we waste money paying him off or perhaps just off load him somewhere on loan and cut what we pay for his wages?

I'm pretty sure Mick Lyons signed Scott McGarvey together with Mick Hallsall.

I met Mick Hallsall whilst he was at Peterborough, even though he wasn't very popular at Grimsby, he had nothing but praise for the club, and enjoyed his short time here.

Michael Jeffrey was part of the strike force that took us to the top of the Championship, as was a young Jonny Rowan. Looking back, it's quite difficult to see how that happened, early in the season though it was.

Yep, we peaked after six games which consisted of four wins, all 1-0 including a Danny Coyne-inspired smash and grab at West Brom and a Magnus Hedman howler at Coventry.

It's been downhill since then, pretty much. I blame Osama Bin Laden.

I'm not sure he has in all honesty. Though he was thrown in the deep end when he wasn't ready IMO. Perhaps his time will come.

I thought that the Cov goalie that day was Chris Kirkland (though I see he was sold to Liverpool in the August).

Definitely a hat-wearing Magnus Hedman. Chris Kirkland would have to wait another couple of months to get beaten from distance by Phil Jevons (but it would be worth the wait).

That's the one - I'd recalled that there was a striker with an exotic-sounding name who was utterly shite, but couldn't for the life remember it - I had high hopes for him simply because of the name and he scored against us; I should have checked his track record at the time - about 8 clubs before us with a few games for each. He looked absolutely garbage - Sunday league standard. I remember later being shocked to see his name popping up regularly as a scorer in Scotland. Looking at his career overall he must have been some kind of late-developer - he scored a goal every 3 games including a fair few in the SPL.

Ah that’s it. He thought he’d escaped the Grimsby Reaper by going to Liverpool. But there’s no avoiding him when your name is scribed on his parchment.

Feel for Hurst in the interview he done after Exeter . Has improved the team since he came but alas to much to do. Like him feel the sending off had a big bearing on the game .Having said that great effort by the team even if they did come up short last night.

Since going top of the Championship we have dropped 3 full divisions (exactly - and counting).  Not a great advert for the Club and progress.

Bin Laden was supposedly a regular football fan supporting Arsenal.  Their boring defensive football probably sent him over the edge.
