Could the club not support some of them by offering monthly contracts and furloughing them at least whilst the scheme is viable? It's there to protect people from being out of work and we'll have lads on very normal salaries. Don't know if there's something to prohibit it with fixed term contracts? Might give us a better chance of then retaining some of those we'd want to when we have a better idea of when we might be able to generate any income.

If your contract runs out you can’t be reengaged and furloughed.

But the contract can be extended before it ends and the furlough continues.

Can it? I didn’t know that and I’ve furloughed a lot of people in the last few weeks. Then again we have few fixed term contracts.

The principle of furlough and what HMRC payments are based upon is that there is no work for you so how could an employer justify renewing a contract if there isn’t a requirement, what we’re finding is there is still a bit on uncertainty on the rules so who knows?

What about workers on fixed-term contracts?

The updated guidance confirms that workers on fixed-term contracts can be furloughed.  If the fixed term contract has not already expired, it can be extended or renewed and the worker can be furloughed – so long as an RTI payment was notified to HMRC on or before 19 March.

Workers on fixed term contracts which expired after 28 February or 19 March can also be re-employed and then put on furlough, if either:

their contract expired after 28 February 2020 and an RTI payment was notified to HMRC on or before 28 February, or
their contract expired after 19 March 2020 and an RTI payment was notified to HMRC on or before 19 March.
However, workers that started and ended the same contract between 28 February 2020 and 19 March 2020 do not qualify for the furlough scheme

So i reckon pre contracts could easily be signed then furlough, also think that location will play a massive part of the upcoming transfer activity.
One massive thing we have with vernam is he is a local lad and would have thought staying close to family in case of another lock down may well be a merit mark for us.

Maybe being a relatively small, quiet town on the road to nowhere might finally about to become a USP rather than a hindrance!
