Arguably the best centre half we’ve ever had, given the level he played at. He could do it all, probably ahead of his time in terms of bringing the ball out from the back. That back 4 of Macca, Handyside, Lever and Gally were superb.

Genuinely gutted by this, one of my boyhood hero’s taken far too young. Rest in peace Peter.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Gutted. So sad. Can’t say any more than anything said already. Was a leader but, played in a team on leaders. I remember That tackle from pechisolido in the play offs and everyone in the ground was baying for blood. He was one of those players that ‘got’ what the town, club and people were all about.

RIP legend 🏮󠁧󠁱󠁳󠁣󠁮󠁿

Feck, feck, feck, awful news. Scored in my son’s first Town game - 5-1 win over WBA. Arguably the most talented centre half in terms of natural ability in the last 50 years? Certainly, in the top 3 with Ryan Bennet and Kev Moore. Perhaps didn’t make the most of it although that bad injury on tour in Northern Ireland was a big setback in his career. Really saddened

Ah man, this is awful news if true.

While every other kid playing dinner time footy at school was pretending to be Cantona or Wright or Fowler or Shearer, I used to sit in defence, just a step ahead of my best mate in goal, and stop the ball-hogging twĂ ts by pretending to be Handyside.

A genuine favourite of mine. He made me want to defend when every other kid in the playground wanted to be the goalscorer.

Unfortunately I'm sure it is mate.
Tragic news of one of the best players I've seen in a Town shirt.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I can’t tell you how shocked I am by this. To put this in perspective , I’m 48 and feel like I’m only just starting out in life. I have never been fitter and can’t believe someone as god-like as Peter could die. I am absolutely gobsmacked.

He was so handsome it was unfair to us mere mortals.

Can’t be true.

Such sad news. I started attending regularly in the mid-late 90s when he was at his best and has remained one of my favourite GTFC players. I was too young to truly recognise his class but the fact he’s been a constant in my all time 11 says enough. RIP Peter.

Really sad news if true, but the closest thing to confirmation I've seen so far is a random bloke on Twitter.

I really hope it's not true, a really classy centre half.

Incredibly sad news. Was one of my favourite Town players growing up as a kid in the 90s. I played at CB through youth football and definitely looked up to Handyside, remember being gutted when he went to Stoke.

Terrible news, if true. A year or two younger than me which brings it very close to home.

Oddly enough, my main memory of Handyside isn't of him playing, (though he was a very classy centre-half, even at a relatively young age), but it is him staggering around outside of JDs absolutely blotto as I was queuing to get in one night! I think he was out for a longish-term injury at the time, but rehab was a bit different in those days!

Back in the day, it seemed you would see most of the younger players out in Clee on a Saturday night. Made it feel like they were 'one of us'.

According to wiki he scored 4 goals for us, I'm sure I remember seeing him scoring at Ipswich to earn us a 1-1 draw if my memory serves me correctly.

Peter scored the only goal of the game so became her favourite player.

I didn’t go, but I reckon he scored the winner in a 1-0 at Ipswich. Possibly our first and only victory there ever.

You'll see that this report has some incorrect facts, about him,, But I leave it here for your perusal ...

The Passing of Peter Handyside: A Tribute to a Football Legend

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Peter Handyside, who passed away at the age of 49. Peter was a beloved resident of Dumfries and a former professional football player, leaving an indelible mark on the sport he dedicated his life to. Having played for renowned clubs such as Stoke City, Grimsby Town, and Barnsley, Peter’s skills on the field were admired by fans and fellow athletes alike.

Peter Handyside’s journey in the world of football began with his debut at Stoke City, where he showcased his exceptional talent as a defender. His strong presence and unwavering commitment to the game quickly earned him a place in the hearts of Stoke City supporters. Peter’s contributions to the club were instrumental in their success during his time there.

His contributions to the sport, both as a player and as a human being, will forever be cherished. Peter’s dedication, skill, and unwavering spirit serve as a testament to his love for the beautiful game.

As we mourn the loss of a true football legend, let us remember Peter Handyside for the joy and inspiration he brought to the sport. His memory will forever be etched in the annals of football history, and his impact will continue to resonate with future generations. Peter Handyside, thank you for the unforgettable moments and the indelible mark you left on the world of football.

Totally shocked was one of my favourite players growing up, he had such composure and class on the ball I was amazed he never played in the top flight.

So so very sad, we've lost a true legend and far too soon 😱

I always thought he would be a full cap for Scotland.  Very cultured player.  He played in various games alongside Paul Futcher, Graham Rodger, Mark Lever, Andy Tillson, Richard Smith, Ashley Fickling, Steve Livingstone, Paul Groves, Paul Raven, and Menno Willems.

A fantastic player for us and one of my favourite defenders ever for the mariners. In my time supporting these were the best years and he was integral to that. A very sad day

Awful news.

Don’t take what I’m about to say disrespectfully but watching Peter was like watching Paula Radcliffe.

Ungainly brilliance, genuine brilliance, but without the crapping on the side of the road.

Peter was so classy and had an amazing, dry sense of humour. Him and Jack Lester were a funny double act.

It’s a dark night.

Never thought him ungainly, rather the converse, tending towards the elegant, not Coe elegant perhaps, but certainly an easy mover.

It was the elbows. You wouldn’t want to have jostled with him in a queue for a Smirnoff Ice in Pier 39. I did.

Peter was elegant on the ball, there’s no doubt about that.

He learnt a lot from Paul Futcher, was very disappointed that he left us on a free..He was a million pound rated player...Lennie preferred Enhua, Pete couldn't get a game so he left...one of my many heroes from a fantastic team, that one day I hope we can replicate.

He made it look easy , he would get exposed 1 on 1 last man against high level forward players and always come away with the ball in an unfussy manner . Him , Lever and Davison were immense in the PO final against Northampton were it was an aerial bombardment to say the least , didn't give them a sniff that day .

Devastated !

For Town fans my age, who first started going in the early to mid 90’s Peter Handyside was one of best players of that era and beyond. As a 10 year old I had a big poster of him on my wall that I got from the club shop around 1997.

I’ve got a couple of signed programmes from him somwhere as well, a fantastic player from start till finish and ultimately irreplaceable in that golden season. Was gutted when he left, as I was when Lever, Lester, Donovan and Davison moved on during the turn of the millennium,

It’s a real shame he never came back, I can’t say I remember him coming back for any testamonials of reunions (maybe wrong?)

Thoughts are with his family and friends.

A truly great Mariner

RIP Peter

Really sad news. Thoughts with his family if true. Only time I really remember him struggle was when a 17 year old lad called Michael Owen scored his first senior hat-trick in 1997 at Anfield with us losing 3-0 in the League Cup 4th round. He was just too quick for us. The rest of the time Peter was a cut above. That 97/98 team was something special though as they showed at Wembley twice in 98! Great memories on a sad day.

Longevity isn’t a stalwart GTFC centre half thing sadly, Kev Moore - 55
Futch - 60
And now Peter at 49.
Also, not in the same league as the above, but Enhua died aged 48.

Also Geoff Barker died at 73 and Wiggy has dementia at 73.

That's really young to go, have a lot of memories of him coming up the ranks of the team as that was the era I really started going to home games regularly. Part of the team that created some of the most famous moments that everybody remembers with the Wembley double and followed that up with arguably his best season in a town shirt before an unfortunate pre season injury slowed down his career.

One of those players nobody will forget.

Very well put.

He was such a quality, dependable player. He was one of a small number of players who defined our team through the 90s. Even after he left, it was good to see him do well, captaining Stoke to promotion. RIP
