Sure Hurst said Glennon was out injured in one of his last interviews, so maybe just a case of coming back from injury, rather than coming in from the cold?

Not that it matters. Fresh start today.

You'd have thought that the young striker (Cameron?) Might have got a place in the bench just for the experience for him

The youth team played Mansfield yesterday and drew 2-2 so presumably (and correctly imo) the caretaker managers probably viewed him playing that was more beneficial than travelling down to Slough to maybe if he's lucky get a very short cameo appearance at best.

Anyone seen Danny Cowley at the game

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

I think the Chairman’s remarks on RH earlier can put to bed the notion that Cowley is done and dusted and to be announced next week.

Pitch looks like it's going to take a bit of getting used to - some of the bounces off it are taking them by surprise.

We look quicker, we look like we're moving the ball quicker, moving quicker, making decisions quicker.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

12 minutes in and we've played more successful passes already than we do for 90mins in previous games. Admittedly most 5-10 yard passes but it's good to see.

Who blocked that goal bound Slough shot the move before Cartwright?

Rodgers?

It was more acrobatic than some of Lukeo’s best sëx moves

We're playing away against a team two leagues below us. Portsmouth have just played away at Chesterfield, a team two leagues below them, and lost 1-0. Last season we knocked 5 teams from one, two and three leagues above us out of this competition. There's absolutely no way we should be taking this match for granted and viewing the opposition as beneath us simply because they're semi-pro.

Was hoping Hurst leaving would have mixed the midfield up. Instead we're persisting with a midfield trio (Clifton, Andrews and Conteh) we already know doesn't work because aside from Conteh, who is still sitting deep, there's no quality on the ball from Clifton or Andrews, they're both just effort players who can't pick a pass.

The reason this looks like a repeat is because it's a Hurst style team picked by two Hurst employees. All our technical players are warming the bench.

FFS

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I’d rather a keeper got beaten the side the wall is than the other. His feet movement looked a bit Eastwood-esque though. Need to send our keepers to salsa class.

I’ve seen more spring in one of Lukeo’s old, well-used mattresses.

Hurst did his usual and coached the football out of Conteh. We don't help the lad by playing him deep instead of higher up the pitch

Teams have figured out Conteh is the only player in our midfield who actually does anything so opposition managers have caught wind of this and he's now regularly pressured by multiple opponents. Why would you worry about Andrews or Clifton - neither of them are any good in central midfield and I have absolutely no idea why we still try to persist with the idea that Clifton can play centrally. He's only any good as a wide midfielder.

For those of you moaning about me criticising Cartwright, he literally takes a step in the wrong direction and doesn't even start his dive until the ball's over the wall:

Watched Chesterfield earlier and they are a world ahead of us now.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Come on BD and SP, go 442. Get Clifton out wide. Get our top goalscorer off the wing and in the middle and let Conteh get up the pitch.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

I once said Gazza's IQ was less than his shirt number and he asked me: What's an IQ? - George Best

What a load of balderdash

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

One question.

If all these 'people' representing GTFC on the pitch today are supposedly Professional footballers, why cant they perforn the absolute basics that they will have been taught to do in junior school.

The blatant lack of ability to simply pass a ball to feet seems to be completely alien to them

Whoever is in the middle is offering nothing off the ball. We need 2 people offering support for the ball.
I'd be tempted to go 532. Bring off efete and eisa. Efete for glennon and Eisa for Hunt. Hunt and conteh behind clifton in midfield.

Just astonishing how poor these professional people have been this first half. Just appalling and should be deemed completely unacceptable. The standard in even basic techniques is palpably dreadful.

6th tier Slough show 4th tier EFL team Grimsby Town how to play football...
Nothing has changed, not one thing...
Pearson said they has their own ideas, where?..I'm seeing nothing different, can't defend, can't score..
Awful, truly awful.

How the hell has it come to this ? Investment off the pitch and on it and this is what we get .

Investment off the pitch my backside. Players make managers and coaches, not the other way round.

They are not good enough so forget a manager bounce long season ahead.

Still think we will win today but its there for all to see whats wrong.

They should be able to do the basics, but it is obvious we are not coached in any aspect of the game. You are supposed to use the week to tune and fine tune your approach to the game and the way of playing and tactics.  We look like we have just been pushed on to the pitch hoping for the best.

By the way... they cannot blame the pitch. 3g pitches are lovely to play football on. The only people that can complain are the Roy Keanes who love a good slide tackle / snap of a player.

The team were playing to a plan. Go out there and control the ball. Pass to someone in a red shirt.

It needs to get out of bottom gear and move faster.

Use the superior skill to go past a man.

Once near Slough box they have no idea what to do.

Not sure I’d blame Cartwright for the goal. The player manager struck it well and moved the ball. Defensive wall at fault. The goalscorer hardly ever scores, but h has been saving that one up for us….

Still 45/to go, I predicted 1-1 draw and might still be right…..

Slough will be in the dressing room completely unafraid of anything we have to offer and totally confident they can get one or two more. We haven't caused them one problem at all.

Fed up of watching this bunch of bottlers and excuses for footballers.

As for there being sufficient quality in the squad and us having better players than last season - palpably utter boll0cks.

My brother in law who lives in stoke and supports Stoke went to crewe away last March with us and then went to Stockport a couple of weeks ago. He couldn't believe the difference in us in the space of a few months . He said your going to be lucky to stay up. Worrying thing was the Stockport performance was alot better than the previous games. He also said what a difference it made not having mcatee, emanual and Smith. I know he only has seen us twice but watching this I truly agree avoiding relagation will be a success.

Not sure superior skill is true. That level is basically the top level of semi pro and many of those players are capable of being professional but don't want to give up their other careers.

Not that tier 4 losing to tier 6 is ok.

This slow build up playing out from the back is not working. Again we lose possession in our defensive third , concede a throw and soft free kick and they have a free shot at goal.

He showed last season he was a good player and has played 231 minutes so far this season (starting just 2 matches, one of which we won and the other we were drawing when he was subbed off and went on to then lose) while dealing with injuries and trying to get back to match fitness. Nonsense to suggest he's now utter excrement because he's not had a proper run in the team this season yet.

I think we can win it in the second half, hopefully our fitness should give us the edge.   But a win does not justify this first half performance.  UTM.

I said last week that we were in a relegation battle, that 22nd was acceptable and anyone thinking a play off charge needed their heads examined. We’ve got national league North level goalkeepers and nobody who can actually put the ball in the net. But 12 midfielders who all do the same thing. Recruitment has been a shambles. We’re 50/50 to stay up at best.

It’s not easy playing on artificial grass.

Most of your game changes. Your first touch, your passing, your movement.

What doesn’t or shouldn’t change is not giving a töss about your colleagues, fans or managers. You should still be capable of marking opponents whether you’re playing on grass, astroturf or those fückin plastic ball pits they had at Wacky Warehouse.

Just seen the Aldershot highlights.  Some of their goals were quality.  They had runners finding space, defence splitting passes and half chances converted.  Town need someone to take responsibility.   At the very least we need someone on for set pieces. And a Mani character who just flipping throws himself at it.

Effete has been booked now so good excuse to substitute him.
He's been shitter than the rest of the excrement.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Demoralising when you rightfully replace Eisa - who’s done nothing since September and replace him with Pyke, who is just gash in my view.
How Clifton hasn’t been subbed I don’t know.

Hoof! God I think the 2nd half has got worse

I think there is just one word to describe this shower of shite.

UN-flipping-BELIEVABLE

Lets hope come January, that whoever is crazy enough to take over the Managers job signs 22 players in January who can actually play football and WANT to play floorball rather than hoofball

Hope the new manager brings their own coaching staff in. Very clear after an hour of this dreadful aimless football that Pearson and Davies haven't got a clue what they're doing.

Pearson and Davies seem to have learned the inanimate, arms folded, passionless approach of the previous incumbent. If this was a good week in training, I’d hate to see us after a difficult week.

It’s been end to end this half but still pretty unwatchable.

Surely there must be someone in the squad who can deliver a dead ball, delivery has been shocking all season.

Absolutely hideous performance this. Is the pitch a factor? Well, Slough have played 7 league home games this season and have only won 1 (losing 4).

These results always crop up in the FA Cup; we did it ourselves loads of times last season. But taken in the wider context, this is unforgivably bad.

Efete gives the ball away every time he touches it. Why are we playing him essentially as a right winger when we've got actual wingers on the bench? Infuriating.

No matter who takes the free kicks we are excrement at them.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Fair play to Efete. He’s carried what’s been of the fight this half.

Just hit that penalty spot every time. Don’t think about, just do it. It’s Rose’s job to be there

Stop blaming the keeper every time the ball goes in the net. The wall parted and the ball went through it. Keeper wouldn't have seen it until it was throught the wall. The players in the wall are to blame, they are there to stop the bloody  thing not step aside and watch it go past

Hunt's been good since he came on too (wonderful set-piece delivery from him just a minute ago where the ref penalised Green for doing absolutely nothing). Crazy what happens when you put some players with technical ability on the pitch.

Nice little replay for town, boosting the coffers for the new managers war chest. 😞

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!

He has given away as many as he found a player.

absolute nonsense, and even if it was true actually finding a teammate half the time is still a marked improvement on what Clifton and Andrews offer in central midfield

I didn't hear Wilson's name this half

He's a goalscoring poacher who for some reason we've decided needs to play out wide rather than through the middle where he actually offers a threat. If we had some technically adept players (*cough* Hunt & Glennon *cough*) sat there feeding balls into the box from the start he may have had more impact.

Had to double check Wilson was still on and I didn't miss him being subbed.

Played out of position would have been better havkng Otis on!

Glennon and Hunt both had decent games.

Got a tiny bit better in a couple of aspects. The goal showed how, if you can manage to do simple, positive things well, you cause problems. Overall though - absolutely fu**ing awful IMO.

Movement
Crossing
Hoofing
Decision making
Giving away stupid free kicks
Not putting pressure on the ball
Hitting hopeful diagonal cross field punts
Zero creativity
Poor passing
Making nothing of a fitness advantage
Minimal impact from the subs
No passion or urgency on show on the pitch/sidelines

I could go on…

Terrible. Just f***ing terrible. We look at least half a dozen players short of holding our own in the league. At least.
I wouldn’t be persevering with this caretaker set up any longer than is absolutely necessary.

You cannot play Glennon- Not if he’s at Left Back. Teams know he cannot defend and target him.

What do we expect when we play one of oyr best strikers out on the wing, instead of in the middle where he belongs

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

One thing for certain, Ben and Shaun definitely not the answer. We need somebody new with fresh ideas  to shake the place up. What's worrying is that something has gone seriously wrong in the last few months but nobody is saying what. Will the new guy/s be able to pick up the pieces and reassemble a team to fight with passion and hopefully with some sadly lacking skill? 🤔

The sample size for this is a handful of games at the start of this season where he was admittedly absolute junk. Last season shows that he can defend at a decent enough level to play in league two (and potentially higher based on some of his FA cup performances against better placed sides), he just needs coaching back up to that level and played on the same side as a winger who'll do their job tracking back (i.e. not Eisa).

Hmm.

I know it wasn't hard to be better in the second half, but we were much better. We didn't have any scares at the back, kept them largely at arms length, and scored a decent goal to get an equaliser and another shot at winning.

A cliche I know, but that was a massive banana skin game on an artificial pitch after a pretty tumultuous week.

I expected Slough to carry on as they did in the first half, but we negated them mostly and actually strung one or two moves together.

We are still in the cup, and that is all that matters right now.

I'm no less concerned after this second half

I'm more worried about Conteh than Michee ,(we know his limitations)  Conteh looks a completely different player than early season -- he's not looking after the ball ,confidence shot ?

Cartwright did well , think he deserves a run now and I believe  we should put that shakey start to one side . Seems a good keeper to me .

Big game on Saturday now , we really need to back the lads -- I'm starting to think we are relegation candidates and the only way to avoid it is by backing them and getting lots of points at home .

Concerned , very concerned -- let's hope for news on the new gaffer soon

Think he put in the cross for Rose to score the equaliser. He did seem to struggle with finding his feet. Probably wrong footwear.

I'm baffled people are blaming Cartwright in any way for their goal ,  on here/other SM

He organised the wall - it's debatable whether they jumped well enough

Job done

He covered 'his side'

Job done

It would have been a worldy save with extremely good foot movement to get that far over . Not many keepers would have got there .

If he stood in the middle of the goal , Davies would just have used the space to probably score in the corner Cartwright was in -- and he would have got slated for that ; Davies was/is a very good free kick taker .

Harvey Cartwright has done really well the last 2 games it's probably the only positive .

This may be really left field, but why give the free kick taker a massive hole to aim at, especially now as it seems every Tom, male private and Harry can hit a top corner fairly regularly.  Give yourself a better chance to save the kick by standing in the centre of the goal.

I always thought when I played (i was a keeper at a decentish level  ) to not bother with a wall if it was over 30 yards (ish) out and just to stand relatively central , like you say so I don't completely disagree as you have the time the ball is travelling vs the benefits/negative of having a wall (the obvious visual impairment of the wall /bodies ) interestingly most the times I did it the oppo didn't score , sometimes they would put a wall in themselves, not sure if teams still do that ?

But that wall here didn't really jump for us did it , was pretty poor for me -- would Cartwright have saved it without a wall , stood in the middle ?

Maybe ,but it was what 25 yards out ? If he didn't have one and Davies top bagged it , he would have got absolutely battered for not having a wall wouldn't he .

You are probably right, however my point is that if he had been stood in the middle of the goal, he would have had a lesser distance to cover to make the save.  It's just an observation that to me, makes a little sense.

Fair mate .

I do think Cartwright has done really well the last 2 games in general though -- he looks the polar opposite in style to Eastwood who has a somewhat unorthodox technique .

Hoping he can keep it up on Saturday , a good characteristic to come back from a dodgy start - he's almost a complete contrast to the rest of our team .

Not criticising Cartwright at all, it's just an general observation on the use of walls.  Another thought was if the wall is central, it will probably have 4 or 5 players in it, reducing the number of players we have available to mark the opposition players.
