To the car

That was shockingly poor. From minute 1-95 we were outfought, outthought and played off the park

They overloaded in midfield and the wings and for some reason Hurst didnt combat it so time and time again we were torn to shreds.

Vernam and Glennon down the left looked like amateurs, Glennon is targeted and there were cheers when he was finally withdrawn- bizarrely for Michee.

Cartwright at fault for the pen obviously but did make some decent saves, kid you not, 6-0 wouldnt have flattered Mansfield.

Green runs around fouling to shouts of Greeny from our support but he is not good enough and i stand by that. Offers nothing.

Rose is isolated, we brought pyke on and he was through on goal and elected to pass and that just about summed up a horrible evening

Dissapointed in town support singing “ we’re flipping excrement”. Not needed.

Some will say its only the cup, there were changes etc, doesnt matter, you shouldnt get as overrun as we did tonight. It was shambolic. Very very dissapointed

If we kept what by many accounts could have been double figures to a pen and one other someone at the back must have had a decent game . Anybody offer any positives in that?

Yes I can. Rogers is a class act and if he carries on like he's done for the first two games he'll become a huge asset.
Sadly it was as much their ineptitude in front of goal as our defensive steadiness that meant the score was kept to two.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

I didn’t tune in but clicked into the BBC stats to see Mansfield were at 85% possession after 11 minutes and immediately thought that was a bad omen. Sounds like it was a woeful match.

Goes to show a team is only as strong as the weakest player. It doesnt matter whether you have 2 or 3 assets in the team.......its the behind-holes that let the team down

He played on through two knocks too. Hagrid and Barralad are spot on.  Could have been 6-0.

Lethargic, hesitant, powderpuff and a poor set up. Danny Rose expected to do far too much on his own.

Excellent steak pie at The Railway though.

League cup, used it as an opportunity to change half the team and give fringe players a chance to impress, and get minutes into the legs of Gnahoua. Which I was fine with tbh  Mansfield went full strength.

Didn’t work. Ah well. Our season won’t be defined by a league cup game a few days after the season has started.

Just hope we can keep our best players fully fit, get Khan and Wilson back soon and start to gel. Starting at Notts back in tbe league.

Good to see you as ever, Barra.

I was glad when that game ended. I actually  wanted the final whistle to come as soon as possible after the second goal. Had it not been for Mansfield's woeful finishing we would have been thrashed.

Had to laugh at the cashless stadium announcement. The card payment machines in the ticket office and club shop weren't working!

I see the cost of the team sheets has gone up to £1 this season!

First half looked like some kind of experiment which went totally wrong. Midfield completely overrun. Gnahoua gave a good impression of Pepple’s debut in the equivalent game last season, unfortunately Mansfield didn’t perform like Crewe, except in front of goal where they were appallingly profligate.

For us to go in just a goal down and that from a schoolboy goalkeeping error really was remarkable.

Not sure why PH didn’t completely change things at HT if we really did want to get through and not treat this as just another pre-season minutes in legs job.

Don’t knownwhat was up with Glennon - he looked well off the pace.

Vernam was better than Eisa so was surprised he went off and not Eisa. Neither got anywhere near Rose though who was totally isolated. Evan did well when he came in.

Hurst said in his post match interview that Mansfield's performance was the best he'd seen from a League 2 team for quite a while. True as that maybe was but boy did we make it easy for them. Not at anytime did we match there commitment or energy like we did when playing them last year.
Very early days yet but feel like we are being slightly conditioned already to lower our expectations for the season despite all the new signings. However our 'first team" and a fit Khan and Wilson should and could have made a difference. Still expect a couple in and a couple out before the window shuts.
Special mention to Rodgers who I think is going to be a great player for us.

Listened to the game on Hullberside and just watched the highlights. When I saw that midfield 2 I wasn't very hopefully of a good result but deary me they looked awful as a pair, particularly on that second goal. Thank god we have Hunt, Conteh and Clifton. Either one of Holohan and Green are fine in the middle but not together. Complete lack of mobility and zero creativity. Bad day at the office, got to improve on Saturday.

Seems like Hurst used the game to give some more minutes to fringe players but it all went so very wrong. Cartwright decided to do his best Calamity James impression and failed to make a simple clearance gifting them a chance. I guess every keeper will have a few of those in their career, some more than others. The second goal it almost looks like nobody was all that bothered, just strolled through like 5 players and slotted the ball in the corner under no pressure. Waterfall made the smallest attempt to block then blamed everybody else. Seems like none of the players who came in made a case for getting into the starting line up on that showing.

We were a yard off the pace and lucky to only lose by two.

Mansfield played some cracking stuff and exposed Glennon time and again....TBF Glennon had very little support from Vernham and Gnahoua (who looked like he needed a preseason)..

We seem like a team caught in two minds...we seem to be pressing higher when we haven't got the ball, which i like, but when we have... we get caught in two minds between playing it into feet and playing it in behind.
Rose for all his endeavour isn't a target man and i think this is what we need to accompany him...Hopefully Pyke is that man, if not id love to see Armstrong in.

We have to put in perspective. Its early days...it was a much changed team and we have a lot of new players who are still getting used to each other....Mansfield were excellent all over the pitch and will be right up there..

Rogers looks a class act again and we really missed Hunt and Conteh, who i think would have been better suited for tonight's game if we were going to match Mansfield's quick passing.

I like Green for his passion, commitment and professionalism. However, he lacks the quality...which is a shame.

Holohan looked ineffective and maybe NL is his level.

Sad to hear the fans abusing the team. Even in jest its not helpful.

Anyway onwards and upwards to Saturday, We could do with a goal. UTM

Another game where we offered nothing, and I mean nothing in front of goal, never mind how classy Mansfield looked (which they did, and on that showing will be top 3-6), we are absolutely toothless, no decent balls into the box, no clever passes, its the same issues as last season and that worries me more than our overall p!ss poor performance last night!..

After a period of reflection on the drive back I put it down to a bad day at the office , it was a performance we saw too many times in our decline but the lads who were here last season and  in the promotion season have hardly ever let us down so we can give them one off night

The newer one's playing in a team that was bits and pieces with a couple of square pegs in round holes deserve a bit of leeway to .

I was annoyed last night as nearly always Hurst teams compete and are in the game , but last night we just were not .

I am hopeful for a hell of a lot better Saturday and that win, lose or draw we give them a very tough game . Notts fans seem to be at panic stations after their  two losses - keep it tight and they may well get edgy Saturday ; we get a result and Tuesday is forgotten .

Think most of the fans on here are more disappointed than angry, not so much at the loss but of the lack of Grimsby grit and determination shown last season.
As Hurst says he has learnt a lot about individuals last night both in ability and endeavour, surprisingly players trying to show that they should be regular starters failed to prove their points when they were given their chance

If it’s any consolation for Saturday Notts looked dreadful last night v Imps. That said Langstaff & McGoldrick were rested.

20 (Twenty) and 9 shots on target, despite only having 30% possession, we just picked them off as they offered virtually nothing.

Didn't make the game but from listening and watching the highlights it looks like we were lucky to get away with 2-0.

A midfield of Holohan, Green and Gnahoua will have to wait a while till it is tried again, if ever. All 3 are decent enough, just probably not all at the same time. From listening to PH it sounds like he admits he took abit of a punt to have a look and it's not worked. For me i put this down as a tried something in the cup, it didn't work, move on.

Can't buy into/understand the criticism been thrown around already after a draw and a league cup defeat. It is incredibly early days in the season and from what I have seen we are undoubtedly going to be a lot better on the ball this season but just looks like we need to get it all gelling together which ill take abit of time, understandable with an entirely new forward line and midfield.

Re Rose being isolated, think we need the wide players to work harder to get up with him in those circumstances, however I don't see us wanting to use it as an option to build our attacking play from, so unsure if just sticking another upfront actually does anything other than encouraging long balls..

Will be interesting seeing our league game against them soon with the stronger 11.

At the risk of getting pelters, i think it's a shame we don't have McAtee to help link the midfield and attack this season. Think he could work well with Rose.

That may well be, but it looks as though he’s going to be playing Premier League football this season alongside his new mate Ross Barkley, so I think we can safely say that’s a ship that’s sailed and one that we really ought to move on from.

We were lucky not to lose about 7-0 given the chances Mansfield fluffed, however those highlights were INCREDIBLY selectively edited. The only chance they showed from town was Holohan spannering one miles high and wide, yet we did actually trouble their keeper on a few occasions. There was a breakaway attempt early in the 1st half which Vernam tamely hit straight at the keeper when he had options on, a header from a corner from Waterfall I think which their keeper had to dive at full stretch to keep out and a penalty shout where Khouri was absolutely murdered at the far post from a corner by their defender who had no intention at all of playing the ball (one where VAR would have intervened in the PL imo) all not included. It would have been nice to see the Pyke breakaway mentioned earlier in this thread where he passed to a marked Khouri instead of shooting himself in the highlights as well.

Just a reminder that, arguably the best Town side of my lifetime, the 97/98 side, only won 1 out of the first 7 games of the season; scoring 4 goals.

They only won 1 of their first 8 league games too.

It’s far too early to judge anything, other than last night’s performance was shïte.

They beat Oldham 5-0 in the second leg. Town lost the first leg 1-0.

Mansfield are lucky there are no second legs in the League Cup anymore or we could have thrashed them 10-0 at BP.

Well we made 5 changes from what was probably our strongest available side on Saturday, and that side itself was missing at least two players that might be key this season, Khan and Wilson, plus Pyke is nowhere near fully fit yet.

So it could be argued that we have eight players that can come in and improve last nights starting eleven. So let's not get too fatalistic just yet.

That’s also identical to the record of the Mike Newell team of 2009. Won 1 of the first 7 games, scoring 4.

I file your stat away with “Alex Ferguson got off to a bad start at Manchester United”.

Quite, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We’ve played one league game, which we drew. We’re some way from panic stations, yet.

excrement game but could be a blessing in disguise to get out thr cups early this season. That's the only silver lining I can think of. If we get playoffs, no-one will remember this game

When was the last time we had a good run the league cup? recently we gone out in the early stages. I did not go so I am in no position to comment on the performance.
However I was at the game on Saturday and based on that performance, I saw enough from the new recruits to be optimistic about the season.
Its a difficult set of games to the start of the season and patience is required, its a tough league, teams I expected to win lost on Saturday with more than a few surprises throughout the leagues.

The few league cup runs that spring to mind are losing to Newcastle in October 2005, Tottenham in October 1991 and that cold January night in 1985 when we lost to Norwich 1-0 and our best run came in 1979 which came to an end at the Baseball ground at the hands of Wolves in the quarter finals.

97/98 when we beat holders Leicester (only one of two teams in 3 seasons to beat them in that competition) and Sheff Weds before losing to Liverpool.

Err...think it was Round 3 when we got whooped at Chelsea in 2019 but other than that I can't think of many times we've gone beyond Round 2.

Tony Rees got sent off early and big Keith had to lead the line alone......I think!!!
