It didnt even sound like the PA was turned on in the Main Stand, coupled with those new stantion supports that could have had the backing boards cut down to a smaller size than they have been - they really are taking the urine out of fans sitting in the Main Stand.

Yeah, I’m on the 2nd to back row. The posts were always a bit of a pain, but you could shift your head to the other side of the post previously and not really miss anything. Now there are big areas of the pitch you just cannot see. Appreciate that they needed to make a temporary repair, but those backing boards are massive and could have been cut to the same angle as the struts attached to at least maximise viewing. Seems utterly thoughtless leaving them as they are.

The P.A. system has always been poor.

Even in the days when I first started watching Town, when Bing Beales would walk around the pitch perimeter with a blackboard, listing the Town team in white chalk.

We've had a thread (or 2) on this before and somewhere the club said it would £1,000's to put right and they'd rather spend that sort of money on the 1st team.

Yeah it's been made very clear the cost of a new PA system was enormous (6 figures I think) and spending that kind of money means substantially less available for the team.

A properly functioning PA system isn't a luxury. It's a basic necessity for reasons of health and safety alone.

And the refusal to accept that the whole system needs replacing as a matter of some urgency smacks of exactly the same penny pinching that Fenty rightly got labelled with.

I know it doesn’t make it right but aside from shiny new stadiums, not all but most, are the only places that seem to have anything like a PA you can hear.

I don’t think I could recall any announcement at any game I’ve been to in which I’ve missed anything of importance said over the PA…

Maybe the commerical department could pull their fingers out and sell the naming rights to 4 stands & to Blundell Park as a whole. Is there another club in the EFL that doesn't have a single sponsor for their stadium or even 1 of the stands?

Bloke holds the mike too close to his mouth anyway, but yes the PA and general sound is terrible, all over the ground.

Almost as bad as getting out the Upper, we’d be copulated if it was an emergency

I can’t believe the blasé attitude to this. If an evacuation was announced using the current system, it’s highly likely that some wouldn’t get out. Someone needs to get a grip.

Agree with what you are saying, especially about the upper.

Bottom right behind the goal in the pontoon it definitely works though. It is probably too loud if anything. The music was booming before the game lol.

Surely those who ‘couldn’t get out’ wouldn’t regardless of us hearing Kev Rodgers clear as day?

Ironically, the closest thing to any sort of evacuation at BP I’ve ever seen was the biblical storm in the league cup against Derby….funnily enough, the stewards helped get people out of the lower findus and up to the upper or into the pontoon…

Not from where I sat in the upper, just a muffled sound, but it's all a matter of opinions unless something serious happens.

If this board’s anything to go by, the Main Stand could be engulfed in flames and there’d still be people refusing to leave their seats because messages weren’t being broadcast at an appropriate decibel level. Never known a bunch of people so committed to finding fault at every turn, must be fūcking exhausting.

Mmm strange comment. Fact is if it did go up in flames with lives lost and it was found the PA  system was found to be previously illegible, then no doubt the club would be fuc£3d and Debbie would be in prison.

“Fact is…”

If this happened, then that happened, and if another thing happened, but then something else happened, then the consequences would be severe!

How do you lot live your lives & function in a normal society? Always the usual suspects too, same people who were experts in roofing and safety certificates last week & who will be experts in drainage and pitch management the second the turf has a drop of water on it.

“Can you you smell something”

“Aye Jack, smells like burning”

“You reckon it’s on fire”

“Not sure pal, few folk moving…”

Inaudible sound over PA

“Did you catch that”

“Nah, but those stewards are directing people out of the stand…”

“Ahhh, I dunno, couldn’t hear the PA, I’m gonna sit tight”

Flames roaring over the top of the main stand, smoke filling the air…meanwhile Jack and Gerald remain seated…

“That steward not half waving his arms around, dya think he’s trying to help us?”

“I dunno Jack, I’m not gonna risk it, I don’t trust stewards, I’ll wait for a clear and precise tannoy announcement…”

Not dismissing that the PA system has H&S connections, but I don't think for one second that a poor PA system would mean that some wouldn't get out in an evacuation scenario. That would be determined by the quality of egress routes and the capacity they can withstand over time. If some bloke is still sat in the Upper when 2,000 people are piling out discussing the situation, I very much doubt the PA will be to blame for his unwillingness to move. Which then see's the stewards kick in to life and perform their job.

I do agree that the PA does need upgrading but i also agree that it won't actively stop people from evacuating, likewise a top notch PA system won't help those elderly or infirm and can not move as fast.

If the stand is burning down surely nobody will look at all the people evacuating and decide to stay put as they can't hear the PA, especially as they will see flames and smell smoke

I was at Bramall Lane for the Women's Euros semi-final last summer. A packed stadium and 10 minutes before kick off, the fire alarm in the second tier corner above me started going off. Everybody just turned to one another and said "is that the fire alarm?" The crystal clear PA system advised people in that block to evacuate and nobody did, until stewards started evacuating them.

Two minutes later the fans were let back in and England hammered Sweden.

What was the deal with those temp speakers that were brought in a few years back?  They seemed a significant improvement but the complaint was that they were too loud in certain areas I think.  Maybe we couldn't find the volume button...

I'm sure that was under the previous regime so I can't imagine they were expensive!

Someone shouting would be an improvement on the current set-up.

Yeah that's my gripe with them, not so much the fact they're put in place to support the roof but that they look to have just gone up with no real consideration for the impact on viewing they have.    Would have taken, what, 2 minutes to cut them to size?

Yeah that's my gripe with them, not so much the fact they're put in place to support the roof but that they look to have just gone up with no real consideration for the impact on viewing they have.    Would have taken, what, 2 minutes to cut them to size?

One for the Trust maybe as a number of long-term STHs may have ended up in a restricted view after years of having a decent view?

To be fair, no-one in the Main has ever had a decent view!

Shouldn't complain, for many a year it has proved a blessing to not see most of what was going on.

Where did all of the flood warning speakers go when they were removed from use ??

They were very loud and clear as a bell - useless at 20 feet above sea level, mind, but as usual, the grant money has to be spent on summat, whether needed or not !!

I visited Salisbury City's ground last season on a family visit, and their system was really crystal clear in each stand. I bet they didn't spend 6 figures on their gates !!.

Try the Pink Floyd method, spread out the speakers to minimise feedback and have separate volume controls, from separate amplifiers, for each different sized stands !!

Place the speakers at the rear of stands to allow the roof and sides to project the sound forwards.
