Stadium/scoreboard clocks at EFL matches can now continue past 45:00 / 90:00 and show fans exactly how much time has been played during time added on. The era of using your mobile phone as a timer is over. Well apart from grounds without a scoreboard or where you can't see it from the away stand.

Can't wait to shout abuse at the referee when the clock ticks over past 100 at the end of a testy game.

I wonder what effect this will have on team urgency during added time.

I’m more worried about pïss urgency during added time and the impact on my bladder.

Rochdale away didn’t finish until 5:05 - under the old rules. I was crossing everything, including swords with a guy in a bush outside of Spotlands. It was the second late Waterfall effort of the day.

And that image is now seared on my mental images for most of the weekend. Thanks.

Is there some special stadium clock software that now needs an upgrade?

Ours definitely couldn't handle American-style quarters.

I wouldn’t worry too much, it’ll be another ‘rule’ that slowly disappears after teams start moaning about it.

In last nights game players got a yellow for kicking the ball away whether a yard or more, they were praising it….that’ll die out to. The first weekend there’s a flurry of sendings off and a couple of key players it’ll soon be gone.

The kicking the ball away has driven me crazy for years. They should punish all these petulant little acts and have players sent off for it. That way they'll stopping acting like 3 year olds and maybe concentrate on actually playing the game.

You are right of course, in 3 week's time, it'll all be forgotten about and defending teams slow the game down to disrupt the flow like they have done for years.

The other rule change this season is that no L2 game can be broadcast live unless it features Wrexham.

We have to consider all those US based Wrexham supporters. The games will be rescheduled to kick off at 10pm to meet the mid afternoon time slot on the West Coast.

I have long grumbled about timekeeping but I still don't think we're there yet. Nobody still has any idea how long there is left! Stopping the clock seems inevitable if they are going to stick with this rule, as it makes it very difficult to assess the game. It makes it hard for managers to plan their subs and it also makes it hard for the "leave on 85 minutes" brigade to plan their exit.

With the extra minutes played there are also bound to be more cards shown. The orange card might be needed!

The ballboys at BP also need some training. It doesn't have to be Wimbledon but getting the balls back in play (just one at a time) needs to be a well-oiled machine.

I get the multi ball idea, buy it doesn't work in small grounds. Almost every time the ball went out, we waited for the same ball. And when we didn't,  it ended up on the pitch and lost time anyway.

I agree with stopping the clock. Makes more sense and is more transparent. I have no idea where 6 extra minutes came from in the 2nd half. A few subs and the penalty. Can't remember anything else

Ball boys, same as every other season, were pretty useless and just not doing their job. Who gives instructions to them before games?

The tech must be there for referees to stop the clock and it automatically update a digital scoreboard. Get rid of added time and end the halves when the ball goes out of play after 45/90 minutes.

Their big number 18 (who was winning almost everything in the air) went down injured twice complaining about a whack to the side of the neck. That would have added a few minutes at least.

It’s guess work, always has been and always will be. The 9 minutes was a number plucked out of thin air, somewhere in the region.

So they either come up with a way of stopping and starting to get an exact amount of time or they just flipping leave it. The obsession with constantly chopping and changing laws and rules to suit some folk that moan from time to time is ruining the game more than say, the odd finger nail being offside or a referee playing 1 minute too much or less.

There was 4 sub breaks during normal time, Maher was down for a while, their player was down for a while and the players had a drinks break while he was being sorted out. They now take into count the time it takes to get players forward from corners and free kicks.
You seem to complaining about seeing more actual football rather than seeing a player waste time or rolling around on the floor. As long as they keep it up throughout the season, I’m all in favour of it.

The powers that be seem to have given in with the time a goalie can hold onto the ball, think it started at 6 seconds but now as there’s no consequence the leading team’s goalie can be between 15 and 20 seconds, so as stated earlier, when the big 6 premiership clubs have their private meeting with the refs committee all the new rules will be quietly forgotten.

That rule still exists and it's down to the ref to implement it.

We’re a weekend into the season and there’s already inconsistencies and grumbling in the game, the premier league will start and within a month it’ll go back to the usual 1/2 minutes first half and 4/5 minutes in the second apart from those times when there’s a serious injury.

I’m not saying I don’t agree, I’m just realistic enough to know this won’t stop it, nor wis lol it have any sustainability…

It’s a sticking plaster to a supposed problem, one that’s lost much of its stick…

Football authorities, FIFA, UEFA and the FA will not admit that there are any problems, they especially will not look at how other team sport’s especially rugby don’t have half the problems they have. Respecting the ref, time keeping, diving, cheating, gamesmanship are all things that infuriate the fans but, until Coca Cola Mastercard etc threaten to withdraw their sponsorship then nowt will change.

I think the biggest problems we are going to see is the referees allowing more physical contact than previously.  Players will push this to the limit, and with us not having the strongest physical players in the League, I can see us ending up on the wrong side of this change to the rules.
