No Mullarky or Khan then - be interesting to hear the post match. Hope they're not too bad cos they can both be big players for us this season

I wonder if Hurst knows his preferred 17 (Squad game he is quoted as saying). Interesting to see Bramwell and Braithwaite get on the pitch. I was wondering if he's thinking of them as being part of the squad, as opposed to loaning them out again.

I think Hurst refers to it as a squad game now and wants to look at other players.

Never mind, reset my password and I'm back in. Give up trying to cancel it, I guess i'll just use it as my 'donation' to Grimsby each month because i very rarely use it

A mounting absentee list there; Mullarkey, Khan, Wilson and Pyke all seemingly out. Hopefully nothing too serious, but it’s a very small blemish on what has been a great summer in general.

I've had a quick Google for any stream or audio for the game but struggling to find anything. Anyone more technically advanced than me have any knowledge? Can't quite come to terms with a half decent game on a Saturday being played and not having any ability to at least listen along.

He picked up a knock against Lincoln and came off. I know it’s not an impossibility that a heart issue may have been discovered between Tuesday night and today, but surely the idea that he’s suffering from a minor injury is the most plausible explanation for his absence, no?

Yes it does, but he was also seen, not looking too healthy and clutching his chest as he came off..now, whether people are putting 2+2=5, I'm not sure( although I hope that's the case) but there are some "well in the know" individuals who are saying he's got some sort of heart issue...that's as much as i know..

We have big problems at the full back position. It's *so* easy for half competent opponents to play the ball through them and thread players in on goal. Before the one we just conceded from Glennon going missing just there about 30 seconds earlier Efete let a man get behind him and through on goal (which the attacker squared straight to a defender instead of testing Eastwood). Really needs ironing out asap

Fair enough. Hope the lad’s ok if there’s any truth to the rumour; he has looked excellent in the pre-season games so far. Anyone know if the Town players would be subject to routine scans, either as part of a medical or ongoing health checks? I know it’s commonplace in the upper echelons of football, but I can’t imagine sending 25 blokes for a private heart scan every 6 months or so is going to be a cheap exercise.

You’d also hope in this day and age that it was actually mandatory at this level and a requirement from the FL/PFA directly. It seems crazy that these lads aren’t having a proper medical before training 5 times and playing a minimum of once a week

They need to put those chances into the back of the net, when we are on top of a game.

Looked quite good when we had possession in that first half. Their keepers been much busier than Eastwood but can't seem to find the required finish. Fleetwood haven't had much of the ball but we've really been leaving ourselves open too much when they have.

As you are at the match can you do a quick summary when it ends, I'm relying on Towns Twitter.
First half we looked very decent, Rose was linking well with Clifton and Eisa and we had a couple of decent moves which lacked the necessary final ball or clinical finish. Switched off a couple of times at the back and got punished when they slipped a player in down our left flank who squared to the unit they had up front to knock it in for 1-0. Midfield generally looked quite proficient and we had most of the possession. Second half Hunt and Clifton went off at HT and we created little other than one nice team move where Vernam, Khouri and Glennon combined well to get in behind them but there was nobody at the final post and they managed to scramble it away. Not entirely sure how Eisa got injured but will be very surprised if he makes it into the squad for next Saturday. Conteh is really good.

I remember some while ago someone made a suggestion that a high rate of injuries and the length of absence was attributed to Dave Moore and old school methods of recovery. Somethings telling me this was linked to a suggestion he was also retiring. Absolute conjecture but I wonder whether there was something in this (if I’m not making it up at all) given we’re already racking up an injury list.
I also had a thought whilst walking down to the pub that Doigy mentioned in his Spain interview about players not being used to the intensity they train at. Got me wondering whether we push players that smidgen too much and increase the risk of muscle injuries owing to fatigue, especially if we have players who aren’t ‘trained’ to handle that physical demand.
I’m likely trying to search for answers to a scenario that is pure bad luck but it certainly does put a dampener on the excitement that has been building over the summer. In fairness, it wouldn’t be a Grimsby pre-season if we didn’t have something to worry about going into the season.

The hope of pre season ends with the usual multitude of injuries. More concerned with the striking options again this season. The Notts county fans I work with are expecting their 3 main strikers to get 20+ each. Cant see anyone getting more than low double figures here. Still time for Hurst to pull something off I guess.

Thank you for that. Safe journey home.

As I said on another thread resulting in 18 red crosses we still need another striker and wide player. It’s the modern game very common for lower league forwards and wide players to be injuried 50 percent of the time.

To me, we seem to have accumulated players who can cover for injuries/reds etc. So I'm not unduly worried at the moment but what is a concern is bringing those injured players up to match fitness quickly.

I remember some while ago someone made a suggestion that a high rate of injuries and the length of absence was attributed to Dave Moore and old school methods of recovery.
I mentioned this some time ago (pre the new owners) on here. Whether it'd changed or not now I do not know as the person who told me stopped working with Dave a long time ago.

I’m leaning towards pre season being too intense with too many matches and too much game time for some with not enough for others. Quite a bit of that is down to unavailable players and bad luck but a really positive picture and sense of optimism now looks to me, to be somewhat flat, with the squad now looking thin in attacking areas and goalscoring potential. And Im a pragmatic sort of supporter who very rarely finds himself feeling pessimistic.

I think we will have a very good season , carrying a small squad has it's risks though and it's going to probably mean at some point (assuming Hurst does not use 6 loans ) that one or two of the untried might need to be used -I'm thinking Braithwaite at this point as he seems to be getting a decent amount of minutes in pre season .
My only concern is goals , can we score enough to take us from 10th-14th up towards that upper tier ?
I'm not so sure , but what I do think is we will be much easier on the eye than last season and a better watch at home .
Looking forward to The Wombles

Do we really have that many injuries? Judging by PH post match it sounds like we have 2 definitely out, likely to be Pyke and one other? Eisa sounds ok, and we have a couple due back training next week, maybe Wilson and Khan?

That’s it mate- sportsmen are going to feel slight niggles, especially after a break, and then the sensible thing to do in pre-season is rest. But, don’t let that get in the way of the ‘too intense a pre-season/ Dave Moore’s methods are dated conspiracy’ that currently seems to be building.

If you think Khan and Wilson are starting next week after missing the last three games you are in cloud cuckoo land. Hurst is not going to say in post match interview we have five out next week so bring it on Wimbledon

Exactly that, you can’t expect 20 plus players to turn up for pre season training and friendly games and not pick up the odd injury, every team suffers these problems and town are no different. Hursty can sometimes be a bit doom and gloom in his after match interviews but even he was upbeat in regards to players returning from injuries. UTM

Overall we matched Fleetwood today, the same problem as it has been for several years, finishing off good moves that should result in goals. We did have a few good chances, but the difference between winners and losers is being clinical, as yet we are not clinical. We need to be faster on the break, and we need to cut out the silly 100 yard balls in the air that almost never result in anything but giving the ball back to the opposition. Lovely little ground, great support from the Mariners fans.

Who said anything about starting? Would it be unreasonable to say we could start with a front three of Vernam, Rose, Eisa. Then bring on Wilson and Khan in the last 20 or so? Hardly struggling if that’s so.

I thought we were better than them in the first half, we created several chances especially in a mad scramble just before the half time whistle, sadly the same old story, poor defending let them in. Their subs improved them and they looked the better side, ours didn't improve us and we created diddly squat in that second half. I was a big fan of Vernam when he was last here but apart from that glaring miss I can't remember anything else he has done. He needs to improve quickly.

"Matched them" is a bit of an understatement. We controlled the game certainly in the first half and a good chunk of the second half until all the changes. They had two chances all game. Think a few people are jumping too quickly on the " can't score goals again" bandwagon. We had five good chances, hit the post twice against a team who has had three clean sheets two of which came against higher opposition albeit in friendlies. Two front men to return from injury - we will be fine.

Never understood the judging of players and teams after a handful of pre season matches don't really care how we do in them.. only thing that matters is players get some match practice and stay injury free.. doesn't sound like we have done too well on that score tho..

I think Vernam has been disappointing- showing very little for 80% of the time - as he did when he was here before. Don't think he deserves to make the starting 11 for the first game - maybe coming on as late sub.

Vernam could be one of the best players in the league next season. Definitely shouldn't be written off after a few friendlies.

A lot of players naturally play within themselves during pre season, not wanting to risk injury. I’m not worried about Vernam, it’s just a few pre season games.

These lapses of concentration in defence needs to be ironed out, firstly I know we have league 2 defenders so there's always going to be lapses of concentration and moments of really poor defending but last season I thought our defence has an whole we're fairly solid but had too many lapses of concentration, same as the season before in our promotion season, it's uncharacteristic of a Hurst team in my experience so he must be slightly concerned how we always seem to be prone to it. Just something to iron out hopefully before it costs us too many sloppy goals.

No more than normal , but carrying a squad of 20 senior outfield players means you are closer to bare bones even after a couple of injuriee - you would expect Braithwaite and maybe even Essel on the bench against Wimbledon if we don't bring anyone else in before next weekend . I would take that though tbh , rather than 25-30 players - we had Pepple, Symonds etc coming off the bench last season with Maguire Drew & Kiernan also , who although decent you would not say are top end league 2 players - we seemed to have numbers but not the quality ; now we have the quality but not the numbers , which I would prefer tbh - it's very much the Steve Evans approach last season which worked , and ironically left Rose up top as the only fit striker for the run in to get them over the line . Let's hope he stays fit because he's obviously fundamental to our plans like Conteh , Mularkey , Rogers and Eisa who will all be on a decent wedge for this level you would have thought , and are all probably too good for it or at least top end league 2 players .

Injuries are part and parcel of football, and we just played two League 1 sides, one we won 2-0, the other we lost 1-0. We will have more injuries during the season, as will every other football club, 2 definitely out for Saturday is not a big deal.

Apparently he went for a scan on his heart after having some chest pain second half vs Lincoln. Apparently the scan results came back all clear, but still due to be out for a couple of weeks. But I’m not sure how true all that is.

3 and 1 (maybe 1.5 as Lincolns team was triallists reserves or youth for 2/3rds of the game) ......I understand your point...however .....regardless of number of games , or level of the opposition the rest of the players involved also faced the same and they managed to perform to a level , Vernam has disappointed for me so far.

Defensive errors are the root cause of most goals. Watch MOTD on a Saturday night and you will see plenty of them by Premier League players. There would barely be any goals scored without them.

I’ve been to 2 friendlies (Grimsby Borough and Lincoln) I think we look decent, them highlights from Fleetwood yesterday give me hope for this season, we look to be more pressing than past seasons and pass the ball around well.

The conceded goal vs Fleetwood was all too familar, cutting across from near the byline for a tap in, also familiar is the similar move we make 2nd half with a superb ball cut across to the far post only to be met by their defender who traps it almlost on the goal line and takes an age to decide what to do. Hoping that Wilson will be the far-post forager that can put these away. If the highlights are accurate though, it looks like the best team lost.

I’ve been to 2 friendlies (Grimsby Borough and Lincoln) I think we look decent, them highlights from Fleetwood yesterday give me hope for this season, we look to be more pressing than past seasons and pass the ball around well.
Apart from missing a quality finish in the box and some bad luck we did just about everything else right except get a goal and I'd imagine most would feel it was deserved on balance. The pressing game playing out from the back is something Hurst has been trying to instill but has lacked the players to do it and had to adjust accordingly. Some decent ball playing defenders have been added and the way they are playing in pre season shows why these players were bought in. If we can sort out the final third and get a bit more composure and quality in finishing off counter attacks then we'll be a tough team to play against this season. It's the sort of formation and style players like Clifton with a high level of fitness can thrive in and somebody like Hunt who was also around last season can get more joy with as the passing and playmaking is more what he does over ball winning and defending which is why he struggled with the more defensive style of midfield last season.

Judging from those highlights, we played some very nice football, were the better team, and were unlucky to lose. Fleetwood's goal came from a pretty slick move, to be fair, but we created most of the decent chances. Taking pre-season as a whole, I'm cautiously optimistic for a good season. I'm pretty sure we'll create chances. Only time will tell how good we are at taking them.

Where was this game advertised ?
Well it was announced on the official site ages ago, and mentioned numerous times during pre season. No secret.

Thanks 🤙 Looked at the official site 2 or 3 times and couldn’t see it had been updated since 2022, when I was looking for pre / season games. Plus the reference to the goal at the start of this thread was stating 0-1. So didn’t realise it might have been at Fleetwood. Was it? Someone said it was a nice little ground and someone said that they were outside the ground receiving information from their friends. Not sure where it was.

Played excrement like Three Bridges and East Grinstead….something you neglect to mention. Orsi is a conference striker in a team destined for relegation.

0-5 suggests ‘dissing’. The GTFC seems to be updating the website when games have been played. Would have gone to Fleetwood ( relatively near) if the game would have been advertised

Do you think the other 2-300 town fans just happened to be at Fleetwood’s ground by chance yesterday?

I saw it advertised on ITV the other night. 3rd advert during Coronation Street (the 7:30 episode). Although I suppose adverts differ depending on region.

We lost 0-1, played well in the first half but Fleetwood improved in the second half. I think you are looking at the wrong website.
