Smith and Wearne make the squad then. JMD will never start unfortunately, I think that's pretty evident now.

Don't see a lot of creativity in the XI but hopefully we can grow into the game and use our attacking options later on.

4-5-1 with Glennon on left and Clifton on right.
Team I predicted Vs Forest albeit Smith was injured in mid week.
Set up to be solid but work hard with emphasis of attacking on the break.

Once again, we look clueless against a quick tricky wingback, that was far too easy

Mistake from Amos caught in between going for the ball and out of position. But on the whole we look very sluggish.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

We're starting to put something together now. Little individual errors just keep breaking up the play at the minute, but much improved on the opening 5

They sound dangerous in attack and we don't even sound average. You can only hope they come out guns blazing in the 2nd half.

I did say coming out all guns blazing in the second half PP. Last year at this time we had a few goal scorers so confident of a victory for the 2-1 victory I predicted.

Come on Town.

Green off Pepple on at half time please. Greens hardly in it and we need some pace in and around Taylor to run onto the balls he's winning.

There's only Smith looks like he wants the ball, and the passing is pathetic. Need a rocket at half time.

Green off Pepple on at half time please. Greens hardly in it and we need some pace in and around Taylor to run onto the balls he's winning.

Agree with this, thought Pepple looked bright against Forest and full of energy which we’re lacking up front

I’m not sure whether Green is being played out of position, he’s basically playing no10 and he just looks completely lost, like he’s never seen a football before.

He's a defensive midfielder, but we're playing him further up the pitch where he doesn't have the technical ability and understanding needed for that role. As a defensive midfielder Morris has looked much better than him and I think he's very lucky to still be starting games. He's far from alone in looking way off the pace today though.

Nobody really taking responsibility.   our 'Arry is trying. , Smith is good but midfield is barren.  Effete seems worried to go forward.  had chances to go on the overlap and stopped.

effort, great. passing, awful. efete poor game. Walsall are faster, more accurate and want the ball more and when they have it they waste it less.

Green looking lost. Needs replacing. Clifton busy on the right and looks a good outlet.

He's busy and a grafter but he's not an effective attacking outlet out wide, were not using him to his full ability out there. Feel a bit frustrated with hursts selection today to be honest feel like it was clear we either needed two up top or JMD in the team, not having this 'jmd doesnt do enough defensively' stuff. Either clifton where green is and jmd out wide, or pepple up front with taylor. We'll end up doing one of those options anyway, as we have every game, I cant see what this idea is with the green, holohan morris as a trio at the minute.

He looks like he's been told to worry about their wingback breaking on him. Amos looked the same but as the games gone on he's pushed up more where Efete hasn't

We’re absolutely garbage. Players look confused because there’s no outlet. We are relying on our CDM to make runs beyond their defence. Get Pepple/Orsi, JMD and wearne on and we might create something. We’ve got two left backs on one side? And our least creative CM on the other side? Not sure where PH expected the goals to come from, maybe waterfall? Just my thoughts

Bit flat, but grew into the half a little. We have to get more players in the box. Clifton looks the most likely. Had the majority of possession.

Taylor isolated, Green and Efete have really struggled.
Green really trying, Efete looks terrified every time he gets the ball. Hopefully they can get into him to be a bit braver with it 2nd half.

No doubt an unpopular opinion but I think Efete is no where near good enough, I didn't particularly rate him last season ( but I do accept his physical size is a threat) and he hasn't started this season well.

Before anybody asks yes I am at Walsall and I have been to every single game this season so far, and I was at 36 league games last season.

This team needs someone who can create something I get they say JMD doesn't work hard enough but he offers us something I just can't see anyone else doing in a town shirt with McAtee out...

Nothing up front if Taylor wins the ball no one beyond him. If he controls and lays off to the sides no one in the box for a quick cross. Every time we do get it in the box no one has a clue what to do, as our approach is so pedestrian Walsall have 8 or 9 players already set. Need 2 up front as 1 v 3 rarely leads to a lot of goals

No need for a tin hat. I think it is becoming a toss of a coin between him and Cropper now.

Clifton just runs into the corner on a break instead of crossing to one of the two free town players at the far post. We can't keep playing him as a winger in this division, he doesn't have the skillset for it.

The one thing for certain is the support given by all the travelling fans. I have often heard them above the commentary and Walsall fans. The fans are a credit to the club, so let's hope the team responds.

Tbh been groaning all game each chance we get seems to fall to Clifton who then botches up a pass, keeps the ball for too long then gets tackled or misses a long shot. Ran around a lot but hasn't offered more than botches and looking at the sky with a gormless face after.

The one thing for certain is the support given by all the travelling fans. I have often heard them above the commentary and Walsall fans. The fans are a credit to the club, so let's hope the team responds.

HARRRRRRRY!!!!!

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Walsall looked rattled since conceding the first goal was the perfect time to put them under that much pressure and Clifton able to prod it home through the scramble while rubbing it in my face for being frustrated with his performance.

Dunno what youre all on about, replace jmd with wearn and I literally called it, clifton is a central player

Some of the criticism is justfied. He runs all day and is willing to play anywhere but what else does he offer and where is his specialist position? Hurst clearly doesn’t think it’s central midfield with the additions he made this summer.

If Carlsberg did great days .. Town win from a goal down, Lincoln 2 up in 14 min concede and equaliser in the 93rd min and
Scumthorpe lose again, this time to a team playing with 10 men for an hour (the only time i am pleased to see fatty Woodmans team win) Happy days  UTM

Tbh been groaning all game each chance we get seems to fall to Clifton who then botches up a pass, keeps the ball for too long then gets tackled or misses a long shot. Ran around a lot but hasn't offered more than botches and looking at the sky with a gormless face after.

That game turned because we brought on some actual attackers and started creating chances as a result. Delighted we turned it round but I wish Hurst would take the shackles off from the start instead of setting up not to lose. Their back line shat themselves when Pepple came on and started pulling their defenders about, and Wearne put in a very good shift on the right stretching play. Orsi also looked useful and played a part in the build-up to the winner along with Glennon who was quality second half. Efete still looked dodgy and kept giving the ball away, and we really got away with them fluffing a one on one with Crocombe with a weak effort straight at him after Smith slipped up, but you've got to ride your luck sometimes I guess!

Well done boys, fantastic result that as Walsall are no mugs.
Think the confidence from the Forest 2nd half will really kick us on. Plenty of things to be happy about, Orsi coming back to full fitness, Pepple's great cameo shows he has to start.. We never know when we are beaten.
Absolutely buzzing tonight.

A game lasts 90 minutes and it makes a lot of sense to have Taylor on at the start and then bring on a young inexperienced player late on to terrorise a tired defence.  PH looks to be doing a great job easing Pepple into the side.

I'm old enough to remember when Darren Mansaram got thrust into the first team under Paul Groves because he had no real other options and it pretty much destroyed him as a player.

Unless you’re Man City or Liverpool, it’s a struggle to blow teams off the park in the first half.

You don’t win games in the first 45 mins but you can lose them.

I would rather be in the match with 20 minutes to go and try and win it from there than be 2, 3 or 4-0 down in the first half because we’ve played a line-up that’s too attacking (e.g. 4-4-2 and JMD for instance). Particularly away from home. Shorten the match into a 20 min funfest and let our fitness and camaraderie carry us through when the space starts to open up.

Sometimes it won’t work, such as against Sutton (although we probably should have still won that late on). When that happens you take the point and move on to the next one.

These threads are hilarious after the fact. We are useless and heading for relegation, then 20 mins later we are ace and heading for the play offs.

Maybe, just maybe, Hurst knows what he's doing and being away from home, keeps it tight and introduces more threat when the time is right. We certainly keep going for the whole 90.

As for Clifton; he has his limitations but he will keep on going just as strong at the end as at the start and he must be a nightmare for whoever is marking him. He's started adding goals to his game. Seven last season and could have been more. Two today and got us three points.

Great result today.

If you can lose them then surely the other team wins them

Time will tell, I feel like the starting line up was caught lacking and dont think hurst tactically planned a half time change, but we'll see, if he keeps doing it and it keeps working then he's a genius isnt he

That was amazing!
So good being a Grimsby Town supporter right now 😀
Thought Pepple and Orsi made a huge difference when they came on 👌

2 wins at Walsall in the last 3 years - having previously not won there since 1897 - we’re on a roll 😀

Now that was a very very good win.  Genuinely didn’t expect anything from this game, and to be where we are after playing top of the table Orient and fancied Northampton……..impressed.

Brilliant support as usual, it always riles me when i hear TV pundits say for example 'Bradfords tremendous away support' when they are playing some team within a 40 mile radius, whereas we have usually much further to travel and still better almost  all teams in league 1 or 2 and some in the  championship, fantastic fans!

For the same reasons the other 91 managers in the football league don’t.

Hurst picks players for specific jobs he feels are needed against particular opposition. They are tactical decisions.
