Loved the bloke, old fashioned centre forward.  I saw him score 4 in the last home game one season v Bury I think.Might have been top scorer that year even with Rafferty and Portwood in the side. RIP George

He was one of my (many) heroes.

it must have been about 1963 -1964 - I think he was in the same team as Jimmy Pennington, Brian Clifton, Keith Jobling and Charlie Wright etc. As a young lad the roar went up of "give it to George" - I think it was genuine as I remember him being a good old fashioned centre forward with an eye for goal.

It is a sad day when the old greats "retire" but how wonderful to have given so much pleasure to so many people. Some people on this site will remember much more than me, and I look forward to their tales of George.

RIP old pal. Loved playing darts with you, Matt and Bobby for the New Imperial Club for many years. Your humour was infectious.

Great bloke. George was signed to replace Rafferty who had a bad injury early in the season and from memory, Ron was never really played up front again. Cliff Portwood was injured at the same time as well. George had a good partnership with Matt Tees, it probably helped that they understood what the other was saying! At the same time we had a good lad in the reserves called Young who filled in for injuries and in one game we played him, Tees and George Mclean, three number 9's and two of them scored!

George had more skill than he was given credit for. A real character. A question - wasn't George a founder member of the Tartan Forties?

RIP  George

A favourite of mine and often underrated.  He was a big man and good with his head , but he also had

excellent ball skills.

In his day I used to stand in the Osmond end right behind the goal.

When he missed a chance ,you couldn't hear him, but you could lip read his exclamation  "illegitimates ".

Town Legend.

I can remember George working for Paddy Hamilton (ex chairman) at Manor Hardware when George retired from football - he carried bags of coin from the slots. A different world where you looked after your own.

George was a real trier who did the simple things well, a whole hearted footballer who delighted everybody. So sadly missed. RIP George.

RIP George a great player and great guy.

I guess George must have been signed to replace Ralph Hunt, as he played up to 1961 and George from 1962. I was surprised to see that Ralph died at the age of 31.

A great and very friendly guy, George Mclean.
Signed from Norwich in 1962.

I used to meet him at my local newsagents most mornings, and it would be ' Matt and me '

91 league appearences for us, scoring 41 goals.
Pretty good by any standards.

I had a copy of the Chelsea away game programme, in which George scored in April 1963.
I gave it to George.
