Whiskey Drinker Posts: 4,998 Posts Per Day: 1.07 Reputation: 75.9% Rep Score: +30 / -10 Approval: +10,658 Gold Stars: 234	He was one of my (many) heroes. it must have been about 1963 -1964 - I think he was in the same team as Jimmy Pennington, Brian Clifton, Keith Jobling and Charlie Wright etc. As a young lad the roar went up of "give it to George" - I think it was genuine as I remember him being a good old fashioned centre forward with an eye for goal. It is a sad day when the old greats "retire" but how wonderful to have given so much pleasure to so many people. Some people on this site will remember much more than me, and I look forward to their tales of George.

George was signed to replace Rafferty who had a bad injury early in the season and from memory, Ron was never really played up front again. Cliff Portwood was injured at the same time as well. George had a good partnership with Matt Tees, it probably helped that they understood what the other was saying! At the same time we had a good lad in the reserves called Young who filled in for injuries and in one game we played him, Tees and George Mclean, three number 9's and two of them scored! George had more skill than he was given credit for. A real character.
