Sounds like an American gun slinger....

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

Born in Lincoln according to Wiki, so another one found where location can be used as an advantage to us.

1 appearance on loan from Donny for AFC Wimbledon doesn't  really look promising for a full season loan .. Pass on that one

He's a Left Back according to Rovers website, former Bolton. Could only see him signed as cover for Ring if at all true but personally would like to see us sign a 1st choice left back with the qualities of a Danny Andrew type.

sounds like he was a promising youngster who hasn't kicked on as much as hoped

re James Hanson has scored 11 goals in 3 seasons so would fit in pefectly as our centre forward!!

Hanson was a right handful for some top teams during Bradford's cup run a few seasons back. Whether or not he's still up to that level I don't know.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

struggled with injuries last year and has only scored 11 in 3 seasons.don't suppose we can expect too much more given our situation. mind you wes thomas had a similar profile (even worse in fact) and he didn't do too badly in terms of goals scored and improving our quality

Is he the lad who used to be at Bradford. Scored quite a few goals for them a few years back. Must be into his 30's now though as he been around a while.

I don't see a problem with James Hanson I think at 31 he's got couple of years left in him and dropping to League 2 could score goals if he gets the service something we didn't do for Thomas or Matt on a regular basis.

Alex Jones is a player at 24 has had some bad luck with injuries but would link up well with Hanson not bad signings obviously nothing in it to we see them sign on the dotted line.

Tyler Garrett don't know much about him but we need cover at LB and to potentially battle Sebastian Ring for the LB position.

Yes he was I recall he was quite slight in build at the time but had some decent skill. Saw him play for Bradford a couple of times on tv and he looked to have filled out a bit but uncertain on whether or not he will be a good signing.

I liked what I saw of Alex Jones when he was here. He went on to score 15 in 37 for Port Vale and Bradford the season after in League One, reaching the play-offs in the process so clearly he’s got something then.

Since then, he’s suffered an injury that put him out for the best part of a year, struggled to get back in at Bradford and didn’t pull up any trees on loan at Cambridge, so there’s a risk he’s not the same player.

Still, if our budget is modest as expected, we’re going to have to take the odd calculated risk to be successful. I’d rather we took risks on young players like Jones (particularly with having already proven themselves at a higher level) where there’s a potential upside in terms of a future transfer fee if it comes off than ageing senior pros in the mould of John Welsh who at best has a couple of decent seasons and then retires and at worst turns out to be a past it, shandy-drinking woman beater.

No but it will add fitness and sharpness after an extended break. We’ve got to at least give him a chance after a pre-season. He didn’t get a long break between the Swedish league finishing and him having to play due to Fox’s suspension.

Garrett I don't really know much about and on paper he doesn't seem too great but he is still young so he may still develop, Hanson isn't the most nataural footballers in the world but he's a big unit he's a handful to play against and he's effective in his own way, Alex Jones did score 9 in 19 for Vale in league 1 so there are glimpses of what seems to be a goalscorer in him, but this was pre Injury so who knows what he is like post injury.

Lump Jones had scored a total of 10 League goals in the two seasons before he joined us.  He was a good signing so no reason that Hanson wouldn't be, especially if you take into account that he has been playing at a higher level. If he's a proper target man, it doesn't matter if he only just gets into double figures. He's there to make the space and chances for other attackers.

He is the player we missed all season IMO, he might not score 20+, but he will help others i.e Vernam boost his record

Agree completely, we desperately needed some physical presence up top last season. Thomas did his best to be fair and Cardwell does put himself about (when he is played) but neither are anywhere near effective target men at this level. The man a few posters on here seemed to rate highly (myself included) was Smith of Macclesfield, sadly he is already Northampton bound.

Anybody listened to any of the Crouch podcast?

He talks about tactics on one episode, and how Benitez played him out of his natural position, and didn't score in like 18 of his first games, and got stick everywhere, he didn't even dare leave his house.

Crouch then went off his own back and played where he felt he was at his best, and started scoring goals, however then got dropped for not doing as he's instructed.

I know Hanson isn't Crouch, but what I'm trying to say is that, Wiki doesn't tell you everything about a player.

This isn't just about Hanson, but any striker we sign, don't look at Wiki and say, nope, crap player, no good

Seems likely the rumours are true, then. We need another left-sided defender, he's local, the right age and looking for a job.

No shame in being kept out of a team by Danny Andrew and you'd hope he would be be a decent player at this level.

Let's see if we're interested or not.

Hanson would be a decent signing if he stays fit. Garrett too ticks quite a few boxes as does Mandeville (also released by Donny) other than the fact he was born in Lincoln

Understandable that we have concerns over Hanson’s ability to stay fit and play regularly but I have no doubt that if he gets a run in the side we’ll immediately get what we were lacking last season.

Someone to make the ball stick up top, and get the more mobile players around him doing what they do best.

Mandeville would be a good player from times I have seen him play.

Surprised he has been released.

Somebody above wanted us to sign a 6ft 4 inch striker.  Many, many years ago, when Ancient Mariner was young (ish) we signed a 6 ft 4 inch striker called Gordon Walker.  He came from a lower league or was local.  Can’t remember.

Fans got excited by him as a prospect as he scored a few goals initially, including a 20 yarder in front of the Pontoon.  Alas, it was not to be and it did not work out for him.

Anyone remember his brief stay?

My recall is that we had the tallest, Walker, and shortest, Boylen, players in the FL at that time. The other fact being Davie B was a bloody good player and Gordon Walker friggin dreadful. Was the nearly equally bad Gary Moore just before or after Gordon’s brief stay?

Only too well! For many many years I always quoted him as being the worst player we'd ever had. (although that goal you mention WAS a cracker as I recall.)
Sadly, his efforts have been "surpassed" by more than I can count or care to recall over the Fenty era. 😢

I remember him, not sure if it was him but I remember a cracking header that smashed against the Osmond Stand goal bar but that's about it apart from remembering he was pretty crap.

What I would give to sign a player the calibre of Lump now

I enjoyed some of the pictures of fans wearing the Lumpaldinho tee shirts on Grim Outlook. Well, when I say ‘some’ I mean one.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

found this from CodAlmighty

Speaking of flashes in the pan, a Cod Almighty reader wrote to me last week to tell me that he used to work with one of my all-time favourite Town players: Gordon Walker. Mark Fenton tells me that after leaving Town, Gordon returned to Northern Premier League football and scored shedloads of goals for Stocksbridge Park Steels. Mark tells me that he and Gordon worked as posties together for about seven years, during which Gordon gained weight at an impressive rate. Gordon arrived on the Town scene, you may recall, in the '68-69 season, as a non-league signing to replace Town star Doug Collins, who was sold for (deep breath) £27,000. Gordon was a very big lad (think like Tony Crane size and shape) who somehow managed about four goals in his first five games. Then (and I can't be arsed to check my facts here), he 'never scored again', becoming an ironic hero for those of us standing in the open corner 'twixt the Pontoon and Barrett stands. Happy days.

Yes. Tall and gangly with little Davie Boylen alongside
That was the days before the greed of the premiershite and incompetence of the FA spoiled the joy of proper footy

Well said.

On Gordon Walker, he was tall but Peter-Crouch-like in his inability to get daylight between his boots and the pitch - any six-foot defender that could jump a foot in the air could cope.

What he did possess was a thunderbolt shot - something Town could have used more/better - but in a sense we got distracted by his 'six-foot-four'ness.

Great memory, though, of him and Dave Boylen kicking off....
