In Smiths time tackling was allowed, but would a Messi have survived back then, look at players like Tony Currie even Best they had absolute lumps took out of them. Although I believe football is to soft nowadays I think we all want to see skill and technique.

They said even when he was a bit younger he had trouble with his knees and could hardly walk between games never mind train,

He would not have stayed on the pitch if he played today one of the breed that got away with murder in those days,

Do not like to call anybody that has died so RIP Tommy.

Dead or alive he sounds like a horrible man.

It was a long time ago, attitudes were rightly or wrongly very different. I don't think he was particularly racist and from what I have read Howard Gayle wasn't the easiest person to get on with. Not that it excuses Smiths behaviour but perhaps helps to explain it. In these more enlightened times Gayle has been swift to play the racist card generally but only singles out and criticises Smith individually as they clearly didn't get on and had a few spats.

Bit unfair the veiled comments about him being rascist. I don't condone it but at the time it was acceptable. Look at episodes of till death do us part on you tube to see that racism was not only common but found funny at that time.

No, it was the racist who was the object of fun, not the racism that was funny. You will have Johnny Speight spinning in his grave!

That's the line / excuse that Speight and Warren Mitchell (when pressed) always used, believe it if you will.

Ask Clyde ('don't give it to the c**n') Best if he saw it that way

Well I’ve read the same story as you and I don’t see how you have come to that conclusion. Gayle doesn’t come out of that well in my opinion .

I'll add "Love Thy Neighbour" and "Rising Damp" to that.

It seemed acceptable at the time but I cringe when I see some of the episodes on TV now.

Anyway...my memory isn't what it used to be and I can't remember who was playing for England in his position at the time BUT I'm surprised such a big player for Liverpool only got one senior cap for England.

Sounds like a lovely fella.

Also sounds like he was honest and told it as he felt and didn't pretend to be all politically correct in public
